Solutions for large college house with 11 tenants? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:11 PM PDT This coming fall, I'm moving into a large ~4500 sqft house with 10 other housemates (11 people total) and we're trying to figure out what the best wireless solution would be for our needs. Because our school is online this semester (and possibly in the spring) we suspect we'll need a large amount of bandwidth for all of our needs, particularly simultaneously streaming lectures and video calling for classes. As far as location goes, Spectrum is really the only option as far as speeds and reliability go. We're considering going with their Gigabit plan to accommodate our needs. The biggest question that remains is what hardware setup should we pursue to get reliable wifi throughout the house? One problem we have is that the house is old and does not have ethernet wired throughout the walls. I personally plan on using a Powerline adapter to get ethernet to my desktop since I work a lot with video content and will need to download a lot of media. Let me know if y'all have any suggestions or advice on how to make the most out of our situation. Cheers! [link] [comments] |

Advice on improving a slow connection Posted: 03 Aug 2020 07:25 AM PDT Hi! I'm currently residing at my uncle's house in the South of France (in the middle of nowhere, in the mountains). I believe I've asked for advice here before and ended up installing an AmplifiHD kit with 3 meshpoints (I may have asked on the Amplifi subreddit though). Anyway the wifi connection is great now, very stable and I can walk through the house on a FaceTime call with no issues. However the base connection still sucks, on a good day I get 6mb down and about 0.6 up. I know he pays for a 50/5 connection, but since it's the mountains there are no guarantees given by the ISP. I've located where the connection enters the house and took a photo. I'm not really a networking guy so I was wondering if this looks bad and if it can be improved in any way (I'm good with tools and have crimped cables before). The left cable is the one that enters the house, it has 2 wires connected and the other 3 pairs are hanging loose. The other cable goes up to the first floor for about 6-7 meters (20-23ft) before it plugs into the modem with an RJ45 connection. I can provide different photos if needed. Thanks in advance for any advice! [link] [comments] |
How can I monitor (and block) outbound traffic, at home Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:46 PM PDT Problem: I wish to see where my traffic is live-going from my home. Bonus: I wish to block various destinations (i guess, by DNS or IP) Disclaimer 1: I understand that a VPN can destroy all of this. :(Disclaimer 2: Don't turn thread into a 'you suck at parenting, learn to parent'. Stay on a tech-target, please. Details: So there's two things I wish to get data on, at home: - Some rogue device is downloading (maxxing my 100/25 internet) at various times in the evening about 8-9pm.- Children's live usage. We're all school-from-home and it's getting really annoying that they jump into netflix/youtube/etc. This way, I could then block destinations by DNS or IP. My current setup: - Ubiquity Amplify. 1x Wifi SSD + some hardwired devices.- Internet modem/router- R-Pi (currently used as a Pi-hole to do a poor man's DNS blocking)- Spare Intel Q6600 desktop computer doing nothing (can be used, here to help solve this). So i'm hoping to drop -something- in between one of these hardware devices to see how I can see all traffic that is coming in/out of the home network. If possible, I can then block stuff. Anyone have any ideas how I can do this? I'm _guessing_ i'll need 2x NIC's but happy to use 1x NIC/that spare box .. and have a hit to my data speeds for all packets, while i'm experimenting/learning/testing. I'm trying to not spend money as I'm experimenting, but understand that I might need to purchase stuff in the future (i'm a fan of Ubiquity hardware). Last note: I don't expect having the ability to block VPN's from my homenetwork, going out. I expect that the only fix for that is to have software on the children's devices, which will then block. Homeschooling + challenging children == hard :( EXTRA 1: here's a hardware pic of my setup, to help give more context to help solve this : https://ibb.co/LkM35nx [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:45 PM PDT Hey all - Something has changed on my home wireless system that I can't track down. Modem/Router C1100T from Centurytel Printer Brother HL-L2340D Mixed Mac and PC household. Printer has been running fine since I first installed it and would print wirelessly from all computers. I'm now experiencing widespread loss of printer access. I initiated a new WPS connection between the router and the printer which confirmed as connected both at the printer and within the router configs. The Mac that is connected directly to the router can now print, but I can't get any other WiFi connected Mac or PC to find the printer. We haven't added any new equipment to the network, router firmware is current. I'm out of thoughts. This has worked flawlessly since I first set it up and I'm not sure how to proceed. Any thoughts? How can I secure my POE camera on my home network? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:33 PM PDT Hello, I recently setup a POE based security camera and I'm keen to investigate the options to make my setup more secure. I chose a POE camera as the camera is on the garage, which is quite far from the house, but is physically connected for electricity on the same fuse board. This worked out well as I had a pair of old Devolo powerline adapters, so I connected the camera to the powerline in the garage, with the other powerline connected directly to the standard ISP (UK Virgin Media) router in the house. The camera works great and can be accessed remotely through the app but I'm concerned it could be hacked and other network traffic could be sniffed out as its essentially physically connected to my network. I don't have any other wired devices, just WiFi, so ideally I want to isolate the POE camera off from the network. I've done some research and I think I need to set up a VLAN for this. My questions are -
I think that's everything, for what it's worth, the Internet router is a standard one provided by the ISP which appears to be an Arris TG2492LG-85 Any help would be much appreciated Many thanks [link] [comments] |
Switching to Fios. Should I go with the G3100 WiFi 6 router? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:12 PM PDT So I am switching from Spectrum to Fios soon for my apartment, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Verizon G3100 WiFi 6 router. Currently they are offering the rental of the router at no extra cost. Currently I have an RT2600AC and MR2200AC setup in a mesh, but Im wondering if the new Verizon router will perform better. Any advice is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
1 ISP, 2 Physical routers/firewall Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:21 PM PDT Long story short, I like to explore with networking, make mistakes and sometime I break the network in my house.. Problem is, I have a legal suite with tenants, kids on YouTube, wife on Facebook etc. It's a pain when I break something. I'm looking for a way to have a stable network and a dev network (at the firewall level). They wouldn't have to talk to each other, I just want the stable lan to stay up if the dev goes down. Currently setup is a USG with a bunch of Unifi AP and vlans. Playing with pfSense right now and in love. I know I'll break the lan once again learning it. Only solution I came up with would be to have a transparent router (pfsense) bridging off those 2 routers? For a total of 3 routers... Any advice? [link] [comments] |
Severed RG11 cable underground Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:47 PM PDT I recently severed my coax cable running through my backyard into the house. Comcast came out today and patched it with waterproof connectors. My signal looks great, no noise and solid download/upload speeds. Is this an adequate fix or will it start to degrade over time? Isolating a Raspberry Pi through subnetting Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:00 PM PDT So, I know what subnetting is and have seen all one million and one variations on how to do it. This general knowledge has only allowed me to solve basic subnetting problems, which is fine, but I am trying to solve a practical issue; that is, I want to isolate a Raspberry Pi for security reasons, as I plan to run a web server from it. The issue is I don't know where to begin. I open up my router portal and it's a mess. Do I have to manually input an address and mask in the pi itself? Do I have to reconfigure anything in my router? What are some good practices when making a subnetwork? Any other things I should know before moving forward? Admittedly, I feel as though I'm jumping into the deep end without much knowledge of networking and have been trying to catch up. I'd like to think I know the basics but I'm sure more issues will arise as I progress in this project. Any other things I should know in terms of security? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Trying to choose between mesh networks. Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:57 PM PDT Hey all - Mesh will work best for me. I am trying to decide between Deco M5 and M9. M5 comes with three nodes and is significantly cheaper. M9 comes with two nodes but my house isn't that big. The M9 has a built in Hub, and the reviews suggest that it is a better choice for Home automation (Most of my devices are Switches and outlets). Does anyone have anything positive or negative to say about either, and does anyone have any insight as to which is more effective for the differences I am asking about? Also, if you clearly have a better choice than these, feel free, but "Which mesh network is best" seems to get asked once a month around here, and I already looked at the last couple. Going better connection upstairs Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:44 PM PDT I live in a two story house with a finished basement. My office has a few servers and it's where the internet comes in. I currently have an R7000 connected to the modem which provides me with the LAN I need down there and internet throughout the house. Issue is that upstairs the wifi is not great. Even if the connection is strong (on either 2.4 or 5ghz) stuff simply won't load. Today I decided to fix it, I ran a new cat5 line from the office through the garage up to the first floor. Except I'm not sure what device to put there. I'm debating moving my r7000 there and buying a new router for downstairs. Or do I just buy a cheaper AP that can act in bridge mode. Thanks so much! My xbox is stuck with a consistent latency of 300ms and a slow speed Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:09 PM PDT I just found out I am on a CGnat, I have always had a strict nat and never had a problem playing. I have an internet of 40Mbps and the speed is fine in my phone and PC but in my xbox when I do a test connnection the speed is around 8Mbps and a latency between 290-330ms. What do you think is causing this? I have had this problem since Friday. I tried playing on xbox live with my mobile phone and it works fine. My xbox is connected with an ethernet cable to my router. I tried changing the Dns servers to 8.8.8.8 [link] [comments] |
patch panel in a closet, rJ45 jacks, but no way to get everything connected? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:31 PM PDT He guys, so I feel totally inept despite working in IT. I have a patch panel in the master closet, and Cat5e is terminated there, but every single termination point goes straight up into the attic and I can't tell what is connected to what. There is a label called 'Home Run' on the top left termination, but the adjacent cable goes up into the attic into insulation mystery land just like all of the rest. How do I figure out how to get a switch involved here so that I can at least create interconnectivity between these RJ45 jacks? Do I need to get a toner set up and run a matrix of 'source destination checks? Or is there some sort of standard set up I could validate? I'm currently running a network based off of a cable modem, DHCP router, Wifi Router in AP mode... everything is Wifi, but I'd like to use a wired connection for the TV and for the Wifi Satellite (Orbi) [link] [comments] |
What Mesh Unit would pair well with a TP-Link Archer A7 for speeding internet up? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:14 PM PDT I have an Archer A7 set up for Gigabit internet in the basement of my 2100 sq ft house and need something to pair it with to speed things up upstairs. Downstairs the speeds are around 400 up and upstairs the speeds are around 50 up and the internet company recommended a mesh unit of the same brand to speed the upstairs up. Which would you guys recommend? [link] [comments] |
Keep hitting data cap! What can I use to monitor my usage and remove rogue data usage? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:12 PM PDT I have been hitting my comcast cap for the last 5 months. I can't figure out why and my Edge Router X doesn't save any of my DPI data. Any suggestions to track/monitor this usage? Edit: Current usage is mostly streaming at night and gaming at night too but it's me and my brother gaming on separate PC's. I'm afraid that my work from is causing this spike. I am usually connected to my VPN when I work. Also, the Edge Router DPI but flushes the data every so often. Current Setup: Edge Router X connected to Linksys AC2200 (Bridge Mode) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:02 PM PDT I have a BGW210 gateway from att, I was wondering if it was compatible with a nighthawk X6S AC3600. I'm trying to get the best game experience [link] [comments] |
Amplifi Ubiquiti Extender Issues Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:29 PM PDT Wanted to post this issue again as I think my problems might be extender related. After installing the Ubiquite Amplifi, devices near the router work well. I get 150 to 200 mbps download speed on macbook pro. But at one of my extender points that has a perfect connection I have the following issues: Sony Smart TV finds the network, but says there is no internet access, which is wrong. I tried unplugging TV, resetting network, etc... New PC with an AC 5ghz network connection is getting only 45 mbps download while my macbookpro 2017 and my phone can get over 100 in the exact same location / room. My PC has plenty of bandwidth for wifi. Does anyone have any ideas? Are there some setting on the router and extender I need to change? We seemed to have better luck with a google mesh up until year 3 when it seemed to crash. Thanks for the help [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:43 AM PDT I have no experience dealing with this kinda thing, I called BT and they said the router already has a firewall implemented but they can't offer another one and I have to go elsewhere. What can I do? Any advice is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Internet TV (YTTV) ahead on WiFi vs Ethernet Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:24 PM PDT Random specific topic but I have two tvs in my basement. One is hard wired to my router via Ethernet. The other is connected over WiFi. When I do a connection test the wired connection is faster and it has priority on my network. Despite this, YouTube TV is always 2-3 seconds delayed on my wired TV versus my WiFi one. Anyone have any idea why? [link] [comments] |
Something went wrong when flashing a new firmware Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:36 PM PDT Hi, I have a TM-AC1900 and I have been meaning to upgrade to Asus RT-AC68U. So today I followed bayareateckpros.com guide and upgraded my router. It worked perfectly. But the problem happened when I tried to flash openwrt firmware on the router. I flashed openwrt on my router. But when I tried to start my Wi-Fi, I couldn't see an option for that. So for some reason I thought that fresh-tomato would be better. So I flashed fresh-tomato, but now I can't connect to my router using IP address anymore. So if you guys can figure out what went wrong with my router that would be great. [link] [comments] |
Setting up new switch into home network Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:34 PM PDT Hello, I'm currently ordering a Gigabit switch to manage my home networking. Here's my current panel: Leviton 47606-AHT. I want to run a home telephone line as well as data lines. Do I just disconnect everything on the right and plug it into a switch, which connects to my router/modem? Will that make all the RJ45 sockets in my house both wired internet and phone? Sorry I am not very well versed in home networking. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2020 07:18 AM PDT Hello guys, I've got bit of an internet issue. I am moving out to a 'garage' that's been converted to an extra room in the household. The garage is not connected to the main house, you have to go outside to enter the 'garage' (we call it the annexe). Problem is, that there's no internet ports there or internet connection. That's bit of an issue for me, as I am relying on internet everyday. The router is at a complete opposite end of the house, and there's no way that the wifi will reach a distance like this. I have made a crappy schematic drawing of the house and what it looks like. As you can see in the image, in the kitchen there's a crappy wall plug internet extension, that surprisingly works, but inside the Annex the wifi speed is awful. 4mbs download, 0mbs upload. What are the best options to get internet in the annex? Is there a better type of wifi extender thing that can plug to the wall in the kitchen that will be giving a stronger connection? I thought about potentially running a cable from the router, all the way to the annex and plug it into some router in the annex. But I have no idea about something like that working (I am bad when it comes to network type of stuff). And, the house owners wouldn't be comfortable leaving the windows open to le the cable from the main house to the annex. What are my options? My computer only has ethernet port. If hypothetically we could get a good connection inside the annex, I'd also need some wifi card for my PC. What are the best ones? What are my options to have the internet in the annex? 200ft ethernet cable recommendation for front end of house to my room in the back? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:28 PM PDT I am trying to run an ethernet cable from the front of my house to the back where my room is and I know a 200ft cable is what I need. I plan on running the cable mainly alongside the ground and wall, as well as possibly around a couple of door-frames. So I am hoping anyone has any recommendations for a cable or knows if these ones I found from amazon are good? My budget is about $50 https://www.amazon.com/Maximm-Cat6-Snagless-Ethernet-Cable/dp/B072MRF27B/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8&th=1 With this one my main concern is that it mentions it is "well constructed with pure copper core aluminum foil shield" which I'm not sure is different from CCA (which everyone says to stay away from) The other one I had found is this one https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Snagless-Shielded-Ethernet/dp/B00BIOQ9YS/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 With that one people mention low speeds or it being lower than cat5e. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! [link] [comments] |
