Can I install windows from an external hard drive? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:53 PM PDT This may sound like a silly question but it is really bothering me. I bought a laptop with freedos and I need to create a media file to install Windows. I know how to do it, which is why I didn't bother thinking about this before. Currently the only USB device I have is a Samsung external drive with 500 gigabytes of memory. Can I install the Windows installer in this thing? I couldn't be sure because it has it's own cleanup program and whatnot and even without them I couldn't be sure if I can consider it as a big USB. [link] [comments]
Intel laptop cpu stuck at 0.8Ghz (Solved) Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:37 PM PDT Some laptops are giving an issue, where after an update, their frequency is locked at 0.8Ghz, even at full load. To solve this, I found 2 methods that work, depending on if you want to keep turbo speeds (if your thermals are good), or if you just want to lock it at base clock speed (no turbo boost). Solution 1 (turbo enabled) Download Throttlestop, run it and you will see a checkbox for BD PROCHOT (performance limiting bugger), uncheck that, set frequency to your desired boost clock and run TS Bench to verify thermals are under control. It'll be a temporary fix if left just like that and will reset on reboot. To make it permanent, click save in throttlestop and open start menu and search for 'Task Scheduler", click create task. Name it throttlestop (or whatever you like), check run at highest privilege and move on to Triggers. Click new and change "Begin the Task" to 'At Log on' and click OK. Next move to actions and click New, open browse and select Throttlestop.exe wherever you have it saved (good time to move it somewhere safe, where you wont delete it), then click OK. Next in Conditions, uncheck power options and click OK. Next in Options, uncheck everything and check "Run task as soon as possible after scheduled start is missed (failsafe if it doesnt start on login) and click OK. Done, now it'll apply automatically on bootup, but will have throttlestop running in background permanently to keep settings active. Solution 2 (turbo disabled) Open start and search "Regedit", run it and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\intelppm Once there, change Start to 4, instead of 3 (toggles off C State, to force cpu to run at base frequency permanently). Close Regedit and restart. Done, nothing running in the background and you'll be running at your cpu's designated speed all day long. Hope this helps, was a pain to figure out on an Alienware M17x, but purrs like a kitten afterwards. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Aug 2020 07:13 PM PDT I've read where clean installs of windows seem to be preferred. Should I do this even tho I will mainly use this for school? If so, what about updates? A friend did some sort of install on his but he said once it updated, there was all sorts of stuff back on his. It's an Inspiron 5485 2n1 512 SSD Ryzen 7 8 ram Thanks [link] [comments]
What would you ask Bill Gates? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:40 PM PDT Bill Gates will be a special guest at my Institution. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and only the best ones will be asked. What question would be interesting, profound, and even necessary to ask to the Microsoft co-founder? Account chooser not appearing for Windows Store apps Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:25 PM PDT I'm currently having an issue where when a Windows Store app tries to use the account chooser I see a flash of the window but the account chooser doesn't appear. It is happening in multiple apps (Settings for Windows Insider, Edge, Microsoft To Do, Microsoft Store, Sticky Notes, etc.) so it looks like something more systemic than app specific. I've tried the following which made no difference:
It looks like it is something user related as I created a new account on the same laptop and the account chooser opens with no issues when I used that account. It's frustrating as since removing the accounts I can't login again to the apps that I had already logged into as the account chooser never comes up. Any ideas what the cause could be and how to fix it? [link] [comments]
Error when trying to download/install Forza Horizon 4 Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:08 PM PDT I just purchased a redeem key today for Forza Horizon 4 on PC. Once I redeemed the code for the game via the store I've tried to install it, but i keep getting error codes such as "Code: 0x80073CFB". The Store also says the game has installed but I don't see how it is if the download stopped after a few seconds. Has anyone else had this issue or know how to fix this? I've submitted a ticket to microsoft for help but who knows when I'll hear back from them. Any help is much appreciated [link] [comments]
Black Screen Bug after Windows 7 platform update Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:22 PM PDT My computer still uses Windows 7 and for the longest time that's been enough for my needs. Recently though I tried to install a game I got from a recent sale, but it wouldn't run (or properly install) until I installed the Windows platform update. After I did that I started to experience a bug where my screen would go black for a few seconds then return to normal. I've noticed that it only happens when my browser tries to load pictures or videos onto the screen. This makes trying to browse sites like Twitter and Reddit extremely annoying since this happens almost constantly everytime I scroll down. So far it seems to only affect my browser and not anything else. I tried looking for a solution but every search I did thought I was asking about another black screen bug that happens on startup. So does anyone have a clue what's wrong? [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:51 PM PDT I recently built my first gaming PC, with every aspect of it being better than my old laptop, more ram, stronger CPU, etc. Thing is for some games, for instance Roblox, the performance just sucks and it seems to be rendering that's slowing everything down. My laptop can handle graphics setting 5 no problem, but the gaming pc handles it worst. Does the kind of hard drive affect it? It's all I can think of since it's a Sata 1.5 gb/s, but I thought most of what Roblox handled was using internet so it didn't have to touch the hard drive. Any help is appreciated [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:30 PM PDT Hello everyone, My laptop with Windows 10 is showing a blue screen with the error 0xc000021a every time I try to access the Windows. When I turn on my laptop, it shows the message: 'Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC' and the options: 'Shut down' and 'Advanced options'. I already tried to fix this error on the 'Advanced options', using several methods that I found on sites and videos, but nothing worked. If I choose 'Repair your computer' and then 'Startup Repair, it returns a SrtTrail.txt error. I also tried to run a lot of commands that I found on the internet on the Command Prompt, but none worked. I also can't restore the system, because it says there's no system restore points available, and I can't boot into safe mode either. I also tried to reset the laptop on Advanced options > Troubleshoot > Reset this PC > Keep my files. I confirmed on 'Reset' and the laptop started to reset, but when it was about to 50% concluded, unexpectedly my laptop stopped the reset and went back to automatic repair screen. I tried this procedure three times, but the same thing happened in all. Does anyone can help me, please? What can I do to fix this error or reset/reinstall Windows WITHOUT losing my data and my apps? Thank you P.S.: sorry for any mistakes in my text, English isn't my first language. [link] [comments]

Apple Thunderbolt 2 Monitor to windows 10 Pc with Thunderbolt 2 ports Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:04 PM PDT Hey I was given an older apple monitor that uses the older thunderbolt cable built in(https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Thunderbolt_Display ) My pc I have which runs windows 10 uses the same display ports built in, this one here: https://www.nvidia.com/content/dam/en-zz/Solutions/design-visualization/productspage/quadro/quadro-desktop/quadro-pascal-p1000-data-sheet-us-nv-704475-r1.pdf. I was wondering if it's possible to get it working with the pc with drivers or something? [link] [comments]
Windows 8.1 - Updating Constantly Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:59 PM PDT Hello Reddit, I was wondering if anyone had a solution to an issue I've been having for awhile now. My PC has been constantly trying to update windows 8.1 every time I've tried to turn it on. On boot, it will attempt to install an update, fail, and revert back to its previous update. It also attempts to update on shutdown as well. Unfortunately, I didn't "upgrade" to windows 10 when I had the chance, and I realize windows 8.1 is basically dead. I don't have the cash or time right now to "upgrade", but I'd quite like a solution to my issue. So is there a way to manually, and permanently, stop windows from attempting to update or install updates? Thank you kind folks of reddit. 💚 [link] [comments]
How to make a shortcut that executes multiple Windows Terminal commands? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:02 PM PDT Every time I start a certain app I have to open terminal, then do: cd .. cd.. cd STREAMWALL npm run start-local So is there a way I can make a single shortcut icon that will do all these commands? Sometimes I have to do this 3-4 times per session and it's a hassle to remember and type all the syntax. [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Aug 2020 07:43 AM PDT I know this question will sound dumb, but here we o. I installed ubuntu in an old laptop that i found in my attic and had windows 7. I made a short look at the files of the computer and i found nothing important. I had in my original computer a backup of some of the files that were there. So i installed ubuntu to optimize that laptop. And now I remembered that there was the progress of a game I played when I was a teenager. The game saved progress locally, so when I installed ubuntu I lost those files. I wanted to ask if there is any way to get them back. Thanks. [link] [comments]

Win 10 PC can't connect to Win 8 PC's Shared Folders Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:18 AM PDT As the title suggests I have a Win 8 PC laying around that I decided I wanted to turn into a file server of sorts, basically just make it into a place where I can put files and access them from other PCs. These other PCs run Win 10. I set up Folder Sharing and it's apparently up and running and I test it out on my phone and it works, so I go check on my other PCs and Win 10 asks for a username and password, I type them in and it says they're wrong (I've tried everything that could work, and I've checked that I typed them in correctly, but it still didn't work). I tried disabling password protection on the Win 8 PC but it still asks for username and password on the Win 10 PCs. Any help? [link] [comments] |
