    Best Laptop for Touchscreen Writing

    Best Laptop for Touchscreen Writing

    Best Laptop for Touchscreen Writing

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 09:16 PM PDT

Looking for a 2-in-1 laptop, most likely.

What is the best laptop for my use case? No fixed budget.

Use case will be to write on pdfs with a stylus/pen, type up papers, coding, and browsing the internet. Basically, a productivity use-case for math-related work. Lap-ability and portability are also important.

I like the Apple pen with the ipad pro a lot, but the iOS system isn't good enough for my productivity needs and I don't see how I can type a 150 page paper on it.

A light 2-in-1 laptop with same or better writing experience as the ipad pro seems to fit my case. There are a few 13" 2-in-1 laptops out there but I'm not sure which is paired up to the best pen.

Help buying laptop for everyday use

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:00 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      €900
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I don't prefer 2-in-1 or touchscreen. Performance is probably my priority, that and as much as possible I prefer to avoid Chinese brands. I know almost all laptops have some connection to China, but I was thinking Asus as it supports Taiwan?
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not at all - it can be heavy if needed.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
A larger screen size if possible.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Almost none, some gaming on Steam and Origin.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I would like to be able to play Sims 3 with all expansion packs, and I play Minecraft, Borderlands 2 and Planet Zoo with friends. I'd like to have the option of playing other games in the future but I don't do a lot so this doesn't need to be a priority.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
As I mentioned, I don't want touchscreen - I prefer keyboard and mouse. I don't know enough about many of these options to have an opinion, but your basic laptop is fine, with one of my priorities being to support China as little as possible
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm based in Ireland, if that makes a difference. I've mostly browsed laptopsdirect.ie so far, but I get overwhelmed and confused by the options as I'm not tech-savvy.

Laptop under $1400 for college, Graphic design, music production, and gaming

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 11:41 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

At most $1400 or lower. Purchasing in the US

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

A decent battery life (5ish hours or more while not gaming) would be nice, but good specifications for the price are more important. 2-in-1 isn't necessary

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

weight and thinness aren't too much of an issue to me. i'd rather it be under 5 lbs. the lighter, the better, but i'd rather have performance

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    -Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    14-16 inch preferably

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

OBS Studio, Adobe Creative Cloud, Ableton, Rainbow Six Siege, Civilization 5, Rocket League, Skyrim, Team fortress 2

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Rainbow Six Siege, Civilization 5, Skyrim, rocket league, Team Fortress 2. High setting at 60 FPS or above would be nice

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

solid keyboard (backlit), reliable build quality, doesn't get hot/good cooling system

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I'd like this laptop to last about 5 years. Need to be able to handle programs for graphic design/school listed above. when i do game i do it for near 3 hours at a time, so i'd like it to stay cool. I do record my gameplay as well as use Ableton for music production . Having a decent bit of storage world be nice, possibly a 128 GB SSD along with 1TB HDD or just a larger SSD. Thanks!

    Lenovo Yoga C940-15

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 07:48 PM PDT

I'm getting this 2 in 1 for basically everything. I'm trying to cover all grounds as much as possible, now how much will that be and how can I make the best scenario possible happen? That's where I turn to help from you, guys.

    Specs

    • Model: Lenovo Yoga C940-15IRH / ( 81TEC- series ) / SD2T
    • Processor: Intel Core i9-9880H, 8 cores 2.3GHz (16 MB cache, up to 4,8 GHz) 9th gen.
    • RAM: 16GB DDR4 2666 MHz
    • Storage: 2TB SSD M.2 PCIe
    • Display: 15.6" 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160), LED backlight, IPS, HDR 400, 500 nits, 16:9 aspect, 72% NTSC
    • Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX-1650 Max-Q with 4GB GDDR5 dedicated
    • Conectivity: 802.11ax (2x2) WiFi 6 + Bluetooth 5.0
    • Media: 720p HD webcam with 2 mics. Rotating soundbar with Dolby Atmos
    • I/O: 2 USB 3.1 Type-C Gen 2/Thunderbolt 3 (charger function, DisplayPort) | 1 USB-A 2.1 | Headphone jack
    • OS: Windows 10 Home
    • Battery: 69Wh

Also, yes, I've done my research as much as possible (YouTube and articles) but it's been hard to find stuff on the 15inch version. 14 inch? Sure but not really for the 15 version and the 14 doesn't come with a dedicated GPU and other things like that and even less with my specs. I did find out its weakness is battery life which is a bummer for me but performance should help me forget about it. Right?

So, this is where I want your real expertise and advice more than my virtual, pun intended, assumptions. I have not owned a powerful laptop before so that's my cause of concern. What am I really getting here? What should my expectations be when it comes to gaming, battery, performance, durability?

    I intend to

    • Work - Google Meet for hours, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, a digital interactive version of a book. I believe it's all light.
    • Media consumption - Netflix, Youtube, Spotify and browsing, I like to believe I'm a power user so I do have many things open along different types of browsers and inside those browsers many tabs as well... you can figure.
    • Gaming - as much as possible here, I've never had a good laptop nor I have been able to try real gaming so I'm talking from indie gems from my childhood to all things gaming like Call of Duty, Fortnite, Minecraft, GTA V, Sims 4 w/all expansions and so on.
    • Video & Photo editing - graphic design is not part of my job but merely a rough skill I'd like to improve on as a hobby (Photoshop, Illustrator), so video and photo editing will be rare and nothing I'd care too much for if I were to ever need it anyway, as long as it gets done in that case.
    • Study - I'm set to learn and develop myself the IT field and I'll be programming and running things related. Nothing too intense like hosting databases and servers in here but certainly wouldn't rule it out only to light programming forever.

How to take proper care of the pen, the display, the keyboard, battery, of the whole laptop, how to make it last 5 good years at least, past experiences, anything and everything please! Tips & comments? Much appreciated!

Also not looking for a different choice of purchase. I know, you know about a thousand better ones. Availability in my region is poop, just take it please.

    Looking for Laptop for drawing

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:08 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: About 500-900 € ; Germany
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Not really, no.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance and build quality are a top priority for me, I don't care TOO much for battery life as I will use it on my desk most of the time. I'm not really interested in 2-in-1's or ultrabooks as I already own a graphic tablet with a monitor and I'm just looking for a laptop that can handle lots of drawing on that second monitor.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important, I don't plan on moving it around a lot.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A: N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Clip Studio and Discord are my top priorities.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't really game.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? The only absolute must have is a HDMI port and 3 USB ports.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

As I said previously I plan on using this laptop the most with a graphic monitor (XP-Pen Artist 13.3 Pro) and Clip Studio Paint.

Also, right now I've taken the HP Pavillion15-dk0300ng into closer consideration and would love to hear some thoughts.

Big thanks already for reading this far!

Cheap laptop with Ryzen 4500U: Acer Swift 3 vs Acer Aspire 5 vs Asus VivoBook S14

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:31 AM PDT

Hello! I'm looking for a laptop with Ryzen 4500U. After some checking myself I found few options:

    • Acer Swift 3 SF314-42-R9T1 (8GB ram, 1TB SSD, IPS)

    • Acer Aspire 5 A515-44 (16GB ram, 512GB SSD, IPS)

    • ASUS VivoBook S14 M433IA (8GB ram, 512SSD, EWV - so TN on steroids)

    • Huawei MateBook D14 (16GB, SSD, IPS) - I heard it's supposed to be available soon

All of them with Ryzen 4500U. So my question is, which one do you recommend most? Or maybe there's different option in similar price?

This is supposed to be a laptop for family member, she will not use it for any heavy gaming. Mostly watching movies, listening to music, browsing internet and school stuff. As such I think 4500U, 8-16GBGB ram, SSD are reasonable. As for movies I guess IPS would be nice, but I heard Swift 3 IPS is pretty bad. Not sure about Aspire 5.

    FORM:

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    3300 PLN (23% tax included) - 880 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No, new only.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life -> build quality -> form factor (guess ultrabook would be best) -> performance

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Laptop is supposed to be used in school, later university and in home so if it's light and thin it would be great so it's easy to move from place to place.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14-15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Only some light office work and multimedia consumption.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not sure if she plays anything. But we can assume some non heavy games like LoL.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Ryzen 4500U, SSD at least 256GB (512GB-1TB preferred), at least 8GB ram (16GB preferred), good keyboard and screen good enough for movie consumption.

Reasonably fast, everyday use, with ubuntu compatible wifi card

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:07 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      upto £600
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Battery Life & Performance
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
be nice, but not a deal breaker at all - if presented with 2 options, and the only divider was thinness and less weight, i'd take it.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15' inches works well, but not a deal-breaker if smaller
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
None, I'm a webdev, so something that can handle 100s of Chrome tabs open at once
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Nope
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build quality and nice keyboard - no optical drive, touch screen would be nice, but not really looking for it
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Based in the UK, i primarily use Ubuntu, so would like something that has a compatible wifi card without having to mess around with finding compatible drivers etc.

CAD 1500. Don't mind spending a little bit more but that depends on the laptop

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Prefer new device but if the laptop has a warranty and no defects then yes.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

It must have at least 5+hrs of battery life and good build quality.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

-i don't want a super thin and light laptop but I will be using it for college so it shouldn't be heavy.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-i do play games, and will use it for media arts such as content creation/video editing and like vfx /3d modeling. I'd be running Adobe premiere Pro, blender, and other content creation laptops. I will be surfing through YouTube and Reddit on the laptop too.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-GTA 5 online , fortnite, Apex , other shooting games, and Minecraft.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive, or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-RGB keyboard is preferred. Build quality should be reliable as I will use It for some time. color accuracy should be good, not perfect but definitely not less than 60%

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Overall I need the laptop for minor browser surfing, but most importantly for college work and content creation, and gaming. I prefer laptops from MSI , ASUS, ACER , DELL, HP, LENOVO (Basically all the well known brands) please don't recommend me the brands that nobody has probably never heard of like the Intel laptop with different providers. I am open to as many recommendations as possible and would like bang for the buck. THANK YOU.

[CANADA] mom is a professor starting classes soon, want to get her a nice b-day gift! Budget: $1000

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 05:48 PM PDT

Hey guys, I'm looking to get my mom a b-day gift as she starts her classes around the same day as her b-day. Needless to say her classes have gone online due to the pandemic. Right now she's using an ancient desktop that still runs early Windows 7 with no webcam :(

I'm looking to get her a new laptop that's primarily going to be used for Zoom meetings, powerpoint and other MS Office, and other general office work like emails and browsing.

The focus here are two things - First, the webcam and microphone has to be as good as I can get for this budget. I don't mind splurging more for this or even if you guys have any external webcams to suggest that would be great too!

Second, she has issues with arthritis on her hands. While it's not absolutely debilitating, it would be nice to have something light weight and thin. However I want to make sure that she gets one with USB and HDMI ports because I know some of the thinner laptops do away with them. She's going to be taking the laptop abroad once it's safe to fly again and having a USB-C or thunderbolt only laptop might not be great in other countries.

I have been eyeing the Acer Aspire 5 with the Ryzen 5 4500U found here which seems to fit all these checkmarks well, but if you guys have anything better or even cheaper out there let me know! Thank you for all the help!

    Laptop form below:

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $1000 CAD but flexible!

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life and performance/reliability is the most important. Helps if it's light weight too.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Quite a lot actually! She has arthritis and a little difficulty picking up heavy objects.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Just office software ie MS office, Zoom for meetings/calls

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Good keyboard.

Laptop with Good Linux Compatibility $1,000-1,500 For An Ex Mac User

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 11:24 PM PDT

    • Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase: around $1,000-1,500 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Probably not
    • How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life? build quality, performance, battery life
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. around 13-14 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not video editing really, data visualization though. Not much of a gamer, but occasionally casually play Minecraft
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Just Minecraft Java edition sometimes, only really need functional performance, not a priority
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A comfortable keyboard, don't want a touchscreen, not crazy about finger-print readers, I've been fine with the 250GB HDD my mac shipped with
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm a physics PhD student, currently using a 2015 MacBook Pro (which I've been quite satisfied with). I mostly use it for analysis and developing analysis software. The heavy computing is done on remote servers, but do need to run some lighter analysis on my own laptop. Next, I think I'm looking for a laptop to run linux on (most likely Fedora), so good open source driver support, etc is a must. I like the sturdy and aesthetic design of my mac, so I'd like something with similarly appreciable qualities.
    • Been looking mostly at Lenovo so far, but not very knowledgeable about computer hardware so I'd love suggestions

Incoming US college student looking for a laptop with a budget of $800

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:27 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Under $800 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    New only please

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I don't mind it being a 2 in 1, what I really prioritize is a fast processor since I've had issues with lag in my last laptop. Temperature control is also a priority.

How important is weight and thinness to you? I would like it to be as light and thin as possible, don't want it to be too clunky.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13-15in

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No video/photo editing programs but I would like to be able to play Minecraft & Sims 4 as well as web browsing and streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'm really not knowledgable enough to know how certain settings and FPS affect gameplay but like I mentioned above I'd want to play Minecraft and Sims 4 at the best/fastest quality possible without it overloading my computer.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd want 8GB of Ram, 256GB SSD, Intel Core i5/AMD Ryzen 5 for internal purposes. As for the external details, I'd want a good keyboard and a fingerprint reader but the latter is just a want, not an actual need.; I'd be perfectly fine without one.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I plan to use this computer mainly for school (Zoom, Microsoft Word, etc) and some gaming on the side. I'm also a complete newcomer to this so I can't really compare computers because I have no clue what is better; any help is greatly appreciated :)

LF a laptop for college that I can also use for casual gaming and is VR-compatible. Budget of around €1000

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:16 AM PDT

Hiya folks. Got a bday coming up and would love to get a new laptop. My old one can barely be called functioning anymore.

As in the title, I'm looking for a laptop I can use for a variety of purposes. I tend to be a console gamer so I'm not looking for the neat PC-master race specs that folks like to brag about - if I can just play minecraft at a smooth framerate and the occasional triple A/Steam game from time to time I'd be more than happy.

Also VR compatible - the reason being that there is an Oculus in our household and often can play on it, but that would be on my sibling's actual gaming laptop. The laptop I could call my own was not VR-compatible. Couldnt even connect the vr headset to the laptop because a display port was missing.

This is by no means the most important requirement and I can live with it if it doesnt have this function.

And for college too, yeah - I will most likely be joining a course where I'll have to utilize some heavy prorams, possibly things coming out of Adobe Photoshop / - Illustrator, video editing software.. I'd like for these things to run smoothly and without delay above all.

I'm not very knowledgable on PCs, as one could probably tell. No idea if it's possible to have all that in one for my price. Thank you for any help in advance.

Edit: I always use an operating system from windows. I doubt Linux and Mac are very popular, and in particular I think the latter tends to be overpriced and not compatible with a whole lot of things. I didnt mind using Windows 10.

Is there any laptop as reliable and with as good of a trackpad as the 2014 MacBook Air?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:11 AM PDT

I just purchased a 2019 MacBook Pro 16 inch to replace my 2014 MacBook Air, and I cannot stand the new trackpad. I find it to be much less responsive, especially for three-finger drag (which it seems to constantly mistake as a two-finger drag). Additionally, I have noticed intermittent "micro" lagging of the cursor—every once in a while, I will experience an extremely brief, yet annoying lag of the cursor.

Am I the only one who missed the "old" trackpads on MacBooks in 2014 and earlier? Or could this be a hardware or software issue?

Laptop under £900 for uni, document processing and streaming

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:09 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      £900
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Not really - but willing to adjust
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Ideally would like a longer battery life and a 2-in-1 would be nice but not fussed about 2-in-1
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Would prioritise an easy to carry laptop
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13-14 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      No
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Don't game much but would like to run a Nintendo emulator for pokemon games (if thats too big an ask then ignore it)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Want this laptop to last a long time (over 5 years) so futureproof would be awesome. Also would prefer to have 500+ GB storage.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'll mainly use this for reading/making notes and streaming TV so I don't need high end performance but I am a fan of something that works really well/fast

    XPS 15?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:07 AM PDT

I'm currently looking at the cheapest version sold on Dells website here: https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/dell-laptops-and-notebooks/xps-15-laptop/spd/xps-15-7590-laptop/smx15wp1c1760

What am I sacrificing getting this compared to the $1500 version? I'm not planning on doing anything intensive on it, is it worth paying for the more expensive version? Really all I'm looking to do is watch movies and write essays

[US] Finance major looking for a laptop for college for about $750 or less

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Up to $750 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      New only

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life and performance are most important, followed by build quality. Form factor isn't that important

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Don't want it to be too clunky

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      15-17 in., preferably 15

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Only really gonna be running Microsoft office programs and web browsing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Won't be doing any gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Nothing in particular

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

It doesn't need to be anything over the top, Im only going to be using this laptop for schoolwork on the go really. Just don't want a really slow laptop that takes ages to start up or open a new page. I'm planning on building a pc in the fall which will handle any of the gaming and streaming I'm planning to do in the future, as well as all my work at home.

    AMD Ryzen

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:37 AM PDT

So i've been looking into purchasing a new laptop considering all my classes are online now. I've been looking into laptops for weeks now while saving up money and have finally settled on one but have noticed it comes in way cheaper prices for different AMD Ryzen processors. I don't know much about computers because I've had the same crappy chromebook for the last four years so I'm definitely in the need for an upgrade and would love to save some money. How much of a difference is the AMD Ryzen 3, 5, and 7 processors? I think they're each about a 100 dollars difference so I wanna know if going with the 3 because of the cheaper price would be good or bad.

I just bought a specter folio. On a scale to "yeah okay that makes sense" to "that's just plain stupid" am I at?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:12 AM PDT

I wanted it because I love the 2 in 1 feature for writing. I'm a student so I like to take lots of notes on things I'm reading or notes I'm taking. I also need tons of videocalling, light video editing, but mostly just media consumption and note-taking. I wanted to dabble in gaming but I'm not sure what or how. I doubt this computer will be able to handle any gaming at all though. Please tell me your thoughts on the computer.

    Sub 700€ Notebook (EU)

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 11:56 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
€700 Max. Austria. Flexible budget if the laptop hits most of my wants.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
No 2-in-1, prefer classic notebook. Battery life > Build quality > performance
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Very. The smaller & lighter the better.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
13,3 inches 1920x1080. Nothing bigger than 14". Thin bezel if possible.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Yes some photo editing with Lightroom and Affinity Photo on the go.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
No gaming, besides MTGO & some RPGmaker games here and there
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good & big touchpad is my #1 priority, I've had a macbook before and want to replicate the touchpad as close as possible. Keyboard without too much flex would be appreciated.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
-Since my old macbook kicked the bucket, I am looking for a not so expensive replacement. I don't really need Ethernet or HDMI, and I'd much prefer a thin form factor. Most of my peripherals are USB-C already, 1-2 USB-C 3.1 ports would be amazing. As well as charging over USB-C. I'd like to avoid a touchscreen since I don't use one on notebooks and it usually adds unncessesary cost. I'd be content with an integrated GPU since my tasks don't require a dedicated one. Thank you!-
