Google is a/b testing the removal of the weather app

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:18 PM PDT

Google is currently testing on the beta version of the Google app the removal of the weather app that includes the frog. The Pixel widget and weather homescreen shortcut both lead to the Google app with "weather" in the search bar.

This is such a significant downgrade from the frog weather app it makes me think Google is working on a new weather app because of Apple's decision to purchase darksky.

You can still access the app by opening assistant and asking it for the weather and tapping the weather card that pops up. Please Google don't remove the weather app in a ploy to get people to use the assistant.

If Google is creating a new weather app what features would you like to see in it?

Mobile Services Manager via ATT - Friendly reminder about invasive bloatware.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:15 PM PDT

Just before I planned on porting my number and moving away from AT&T, I noticed random apps getting installed on my Samsung Galaxy Note 8. These apps included wonderful items such as Candy Crush Saga, a random calendar app, another random game I don't remember the name of, etc. After inspecting the properties of these applications, it was found they were installed by another application known as Mobile Services Manager. When checking the properties of that application, it says the same thing, "Installed by Mobile Services Manager."

Great, did my phone contract a virus? Considering how careful I am and how shady carriers can be, I decided to look into this further. I remembered a Reddit post about how to remove applications from your phone without needing root access. While I can't find the original Reddit post, I did find the article I needed from XDA.

Follow the steps in this article to get your phone ready for USB Debugging mode. It will also guide you in how to remove unwanted applications.

Following the instructions, I was led to this application - App Inspector - as I wanted to be extra sure of what application I'm removing as to not damage my phone's system files. After installing the application and inspecting Mobile Services Manager, I confirmed my suspicions.

AT&T had installed this on my phone as of 07-07-2017. What are the permissions automatically granted to it without any alert or input for the user, you ask?

It grants 21 permissions to be exact; so, I'll name a few of the worrisome ones to save time:

    1. android.permission-group.NETWORK - downloads files without notification
    2. android.permission-group.PHONE - read phone status and identity - essentially grants unfettered access to phone number, devices ID, whether or not a call is active, and the remote number connected by a call.
    3. android.permission.INSTALL_PACKAGES - permissions are as the name implies. allows it to install anything that is run through the application.

All the rest are pretty basic. Now I realize some applications like this are needed in order to push certain updates from the carrier and/or manufacturer. Having said that, I don't want Candy Crush Saga installed on my phone, let alone without warning or notification. I don't want ANYTHING installed on my phone without warning or notification, which system upgrades provide before allowing you to click "Install" or "Remind me Later".

So, if you start noticing random applications showing up on your phone that you know damn well you didn't install, you may want to check your system/carrier applications first before worrying about a virus. Also, in my brief research, you may want to check for a similar application by the name of DT Ignite if you're experiencing similar issues and don't see Mobile Services Manager.
