Posted: 30 Jan 2020 10:37 AM PST tl;dr: I'm silly, but I feel very proud at having tweaked my desktop to be convenient to me. I've had Ubuntu Budgie as my first serious Linux attempt for 3 months now. Did not 100% move to Linux, still have Windows for games and 3D modelling/printing stuff, but I have been trying to do everything else on Linux, and I love it, even if sometimes the stupidest thing takes me hours. My pet peeve till today was that there was no clear display of what folders/software I have open, and when I have sth full screen, finding sth else under it was a nightmare. Today I had the a-ha moment of realising "surely there's a way, and surely it's not too hard. It's frigging Linux, there HAS to be a way to make this happen."I googled 5 minutes and now I have not only all my open software listed tidily in my panel, but in the panel *I* want, where *I* want it, in the section of the panel where it's convenient to *me*, and at the size that *I* like. Ha! It's not some amazing bash-magic, I know, but we can't all be wizards. For everyone else who's not a CS-person but is trying Linux: hang in there, it's an adventurous ride but it's got its golden moments! [link] [comments] |
Do full disk encryption affects performance Posted: 30 Jan 2020 01:48 AM PST Currently, I am using a HP laptop which has 5th gen i3 processor,4gb Ram and 5400rpm hdd. There are few important personal documents and mostly h265 coded movies and tv series on the hdd. Earlier I was a user of windows 10 ltsc but now I am using kubuntu with full disk encryption. Do full disk encryption affects the performance of the laptop or is it only increases the boot time; because with win10 i was able to playback those h265 files smoothly but now with encrypted linux those video files may get stuck for few milliseconds randomly during the playback. I noticed that whenever those videos get stuck for few milliseconds there will always be a huge spike in cpu usage due to a process known as wpa_supplicant. Help me in deciding whether the encryption is good or not for the system. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2020 11:43 AM PST Hey there guys, so I was bored an took my shitty Trekstor Surfbook W2 and installed Linux Mint 19.3. I'm pretty new to Linux and would appreciate tips to solve this problem. Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
Automatically close everything when my computer freezes up Posted: 30 Jan 2020 12:54 PM PST Basically title. Occasionally my computer will freeze and nothing is moving or doing anything except the mouse. I want to know if there is a way I can have a script running all the time that will detect when this happens, and start going down a list of apps and trying to close them, such as firefox, discord, all user-opened terminals, steam, intellij, etc. [link] [comments] |
How do I prevent Ubuntu(18.04) from resizing inside a VNC session? Posted: 30 Jan 2020 02:43 PM PST It seems like about 10% of the time the screen resolution randomly shrinks and suddenly I cannot see most of my screen. How do I fix this problem? If I use this computer with a monitor it functions normally. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2020 02:12 PM PST Hey, all. I am quite new to Linux. I have recently installed Manjaro and it works fine, however I am having some problems, that I am assuming is due to a driver issue. When I try to launch Star Trek Online through steam, I get a message saying my video card is no longer supported due to it not supporting Direct X 10. I did make sure my card supports 10 and higher and it does, in fact it supports DX11 and I have also been playing this game on Windows before I switched to Linux. I have an AMD A10 5745M APU. could someone tell me how I can install the driver for this or what I'm doing wrong, please? [link] [comments] |
vim-plug: installing plugin issue Posted: 30 Jan 2020 12:58 PM PST I'm trying to get an ansible plugin working for vim. I installed vim-plug into autoload directory. My .vimrc looks like this: call plug#begin('~/.vim/plugged') Plug 'https://github.com/pearofducks/ansible-vim' call plug |
