TrueLinuxNoob needs your skills Posted: 29 Jan 2020 09:44 AM PST I'm a network guy so this is like reading a different language. Much respect to all the Linux Engineers. Problem: I'm in the process of working with a client to VLAN the current flat network. I have a few Linux VM's that are configured with 1 NIC and multiple IP's. As I segment the network I need to divide the IP interfaces to another Adapter. Ex: eth2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:56:9C:3C:34 inet addr:10.4.9.10 Bcast:10.4.11.255 Mask:255.255.252.0 eth2:2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:56:9C:3C:34 inet addr:10.10.7.92 Bcast:10.10.7.255 Mask:255.255.252.0 I plan on adding another NIC, lets say eth3 if I comment out eth2:2 in network-scripts and add the config to eth3 and restart network services will this work? I have a few systems with 30+ IP's. 5 on one vlan and 25 on another. Does anyone know a quick way to complete this? I have a few systems that have 1 IP on Eth2 10.4.x.x vlan and the remainder reside on 10.10.7.x can I update Eth2 only and keep the others with Eth2:1, Eth2:2 without Eth2? Greatly appreciate any feedback. Sorry if this is confusing. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Jan 2020 09:23 AM PST Having no background in Linux, I will probably experiment with it by booting Linux Mint from a USB flash drive. Eventually, however, I will probably choose to dualboot directly from my PC. My computer has an SSD running the Windows 10 OS, and a 2TB HDD used for file storage (documents, pictures, music, etc.). For efficiency and ease of use for a computer-noob should I: A) Partition the SSD and run both Windows 10 and Linux Mint from the same physical drive. B) Install Linux Mint on the HDD and run it from there. Lastly, I have three questions about dualbooting. 1) Will Linux Mint require an empty drive to install on? If there are already programs and files saved on it, will they be erased when the OS is installed on it? 2) If I decide I don't like Linux Mint can it be uninstalled? If it can, what happens to the files saved on that drive? 3) Windows 10 is known to log Activity History which it sends back to Microsoft. If I boot in Linux Mint, will Windows 10 log my activity or run Windows Update in the background even while I'm using Linux? [link] [comments] |
Linux and accessibility - which distro/DE has these features? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 12:52 PM PST AVE... I'm not an Linux noob. I tried to use Linux of different flavors for past 20 years. For one reason or another I never adopted it as my main OS of operation. However in last few months I've got a few old laptops and netbooks I decided to turn into Linux boxes for the sheer fact that Windows + websites = high RAM + CPU usage. But at the same time due to my poor eyesight I have some special needs. So which of lightweight distributions or desktop environments have these functions in some form, or option to add them easily: 1. Inverting screen colors with single keyboard shortcut. I rely heavily on ability to invert colors, especially when visiting a website or using software with no dark mode or dark theme. On Win10 this is accomplished with single shortcut, namely [Ctrl]+[Win]+[C]. I recently tried Linux Mint but it didn't have such ability which made it extremely hard for me to use its black on white GUI. 2. Dark theme as default or an easily-enabled option. This would be quite useful out of the box. I fully embrace the dark side - easier on my glaucoma. And they have cookies. ;) 3. Adjustable font size for UI. Just to bump it up to 125%. 4. Works on EEE PC 1015BX. This is one of the computers I want to Linux. I need any good distro that works on that, even without above mentioned features. Just make it great again for web surfing. On related note I have an idea for RPi3-based tablet modded for visually-impaired, so I wonder if there is any DE that works in form of text mode that could be easily read by screen reader, with text-based web browser like Lynx, and other common tools that could be coerced to mouse-less operation. Advice on properly partitioning and cloning drives on a new machine Posted: 29 Jan 2020 12:42 PM PST Hello everyone, First question here. I had a thinkpad machine with a SSD SATA III as the main drive. I have it partitioned in / (with manjaro linux) and /home (for storage). This machine died and I am getting a new one that fits 2 storage drives. One of them is a M.2 NVMe PCie 2242 that I plan on putting the OS and the other one is another SSD PCIe. This "another SSD PCIe" is the one that comes with the new machine. It is a 512gb drive that comes with Win10 on it. So, what I want to do is:
The old thinkpad was a T480 and the new one is... a T480! Hhahaha Now to the questions. Is it possible to make all of this juggling that I am willing to do? I once cloned a win10 from a hhd to a sdd and the machine at the moment (x230) didn't recognize the win10 as activated, while it was activated in the hhd. That is mostly the part I wonder if I would be able to do (I mean... how to properly do it). Then I've never had a machine with 2 separate drives. Any advice on what I should be worrying about when formatting and configuring? All the best. [link] [comments] |
Renaming files with Sed and a Variable? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 12:15 PM PST I am trying to rename a large folder of audiobook folders from "## - Title - Author - Year " to something like "Author/Author - Title - Year" but from what I can tell from sed and other rename tools I have to replace some text with other text but I need to refer to the replacement text while figuring out what to prepend with. In excel I would search for the dashes and use the reference multiple times but I am trying to do it in Ubuntu to learn and because I need to do it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 12:05 PM PST The file which has the setgid bit set, when executed, instead of running with the privileges of the group of the user who started it, runs with those of the group which owns the file. What does it mean privileges of the group of the user who started it? How can I check what are the privileges of the group of the user? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Dual-Monitor Support for Macintosh? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 11:49 AM PST I have Lubuntu (with the KDE Plasma desktop environment, don't ask me why) running on a Mac with thunderbolt ports on the back of it. I would like to use my extra monitor with a VGA Port as a second monitor, and I see that there are adapters on Amazon. Is it going to be as easy as ordering the adapter and plugging in the second monitor, or will I need to download driver software, or will it even be compatible? Thanks for any help/advice! What's the difference between SIGINT and SIG TERM ? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 09:18 AM PST So from what I understood, both are meant to be caught by the process in order to do some stuff like freeing memory and closing files before shutting down gracefully so, in this case, what's the difference ? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 09:17 AM PST So i have Kubuntu 19.10 dual-booted w/ Windows 10. An upgrade is due for my Windows machine, and i learned when researching linux distros that Windows upgrades will overwrite the bootloader and other things. What should i do to my Linux partition before upgrading Windows? [link] [comments] |

Help getting xbindkeys working (xbindkeys can't grab all the keys defined in its configuration file) Posted: 29 Jan 2020 04:08 AM PST Disclaimer: I've done my fair share of googling, and I've checked for threads about this on this and other forums. I still can't solve the problem. Distro: Linux Mint 19.3 - Cinnamon A little background first: I need to type letters that aren't on my keyboard. On windows I accomplished this with an autohotkey script that used, for instance, "Ctrl+Alt+a" = "ä". I've researched the topic and have seen posts suggesting that you use the compose key function, but I find that much too cumbersome. Using a secondary layout isn't a better option either because I really only need four keys and I find the German keyboard layout difficult to type on anyways. Enter
This is where things went sideways. I'm pretty sure I set everything up correctly, but the key bindings don't work. As per the Arch Wiki, I tried EDIT: I didn't realize that you can override compose key combos. Now that I've done that, I don't need to worry about xbindkeys any more. I'd still be interested to find out what the problem was just for plain knowledge's sake though, so if you know what's what, please tell me. [link] [comments] |
Windows deleted but still in grub menu. Can I safely restore it? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 07:47 AM PST Exactly as the title says. I've deleted windows some time ago, but never bothered with removing it from the grub menu and the windows boot manager position is still there. Is there any way I could install windows once again? If so, then how to do it without losing all my data? [link] [comments] |
Just installed my first Ubuntu Posted: 29 Jan 2020 06:58 AM PST I tried to get the hang of Linux about 8 years ago and failed miserably. When Microsoft announced it was ditching Windows 7, I decided to give Linux another shot and installed Ubuntu 10.10 on the machine Microsoft advised me to throw away.Still can't do anything fancy like install or remove programs, and when I try to put in programs in the Software Library I get an error message telling me to authenticate with my password and then it still won't work. Not discouraged, but I'm remembering my experience and frustration from years ago.
