If ARM had a BIOS equivalent, as x86 does on PC, could the Android updates situation be improved? Posted: 30 Jan 2020 03:22 PM PST From the many posts I've seen about "Why is Android so terrible at updates?", the two key takeaways I've gotten are that this is because: 1) Linux doesn't have a stable driver API, and because its always changing, this can break drivers and OEMs simply don't wanna spend the resources on supporting these drivers (I'm on Linus's side of the argument, but it seems very unlikely OEMs like Qualcomm would ever open source their drivers) 2) This situation is made worse by the fact that ARM has no hardware driver interface, like a BIOS, and lacks features such as Plug and Play So, assuming the open sourcing of drivers on the OEM's part is "infeasible", if ARM came up with a proper BIOS-like interface, could the issue be fixed? At least partially? If so, could Google pressure ARM and OEMs hard enough to create a universal interface like this? [link] [comments]
I miss android - a few thoughts from a recent defector Posted: 30 Jan 2020 06:59 AM PST Turns out I was wrong about some things and misspoke.
If you're thinking about switching to iPhone, give this a quick read.
Example: You are using the phone to do something and get a spam call. The entire screen is taken up by the incoming call and there is only an answer button. Where is the decline button? Nowhere on screen. You can either answer and hang up or let it ring while you patiently wait to get back to what you are doing. BUT WAIT if you press the physical lock button twice it will decline the call. There is no on-screen indication that you can do this. I had to find out about it by complaining on the internet. Now that is what I call simple and intuitive. How do they even decide not to include a decline button? Sometimes when I get a call there is a decline button right next to the answer button.
Just kidding I found it. It's hidden away in a different menu. There is one place to enable the flash and let the phone choose and there is another place to force it. not intuitive. sorry if this was formatted poorly it was mostly written on mobile [link] [comments]
