Question about upgrading from Home to Pro Posted: 30 Jan 2020 08:07 PM PST I intend to purchase a copy of Windows 10 Pro. My laptop is currently on Windows 10 Home that came with it. Now, if I enter the key from pro into the current installation, I assume it gets upgraded to pro without needing a fresh install? And secondly, will the pro license then be tied to that particular laptop with this method, or does it remain tied to only my account, allowing me to use it on a different laptop later? Posted: 30 Jan 2020 07:57 PM PST As I drag out a selection area it cancels and immediately starts another one. Why is this happening? Is it something with my mouse? [link] [comments]
Anyone been getting weird shortcut icons? Posted: 30 Jan 2020 06:29 PM PST So idk what's causing this because I've never seen it happen before but my desktop shortcuts have this weird glitch or bug or something. Idk what causes it but sometimes my desktop shortcuts will have the little arrow change. It sometimes changes really fast and it isn't always the same graphic. I'm guessing this is a bug as I hardly think it's an intended feature. [link] [comments]
Hardening Windows 7 Until Upgrade Posted: 30 Jan 2020 01:19 PM PST Hello, Question based on article I read about hardening Win7. It was mentioned that the working account should not be an admnistrator account - if the PC was compromised less damage could be done with standard or restricted account. I will not be able to upgrade to Win10 for immediate future. What would be the best way to change local administrator account, which is how I use my home Win 7 Pro PC, to a standard or restricted account? I'm thinking to create an administrator account, with super secure password, and from there change the working account from Administrator to standard/restricted. Not sure if that is going to be an issue with some programs tho. And while restricted sounds the most secure I want to be able to work/browse as I am accustomed to. Thanks for any thoughts on this. Posted: 30 Jan 2020 07:57 AM PST Could anyone explain to me how to silently install the openjdk/jre MSI installers from commandline/powershell?
Whenever I try: I just get the standard Windows installer popup showing different installation parameters. The installation process itself doesn't start. I've tried numerous combinations of different installation parameters without success. The only one that did work was: But that one doesn't install the whole package..

As an average user do I need the old Dot Net versions on Windows 8.1? Posted: 30 Jan 2020 08:12 PM PST I saw that there many versions of Dot Net Framework on my laptop, 2008 version, 2012, 2015 etc... Do I need all these versions or would I okay with the latest version? I'm aware that some drivers install an older version but I can untick that. I'm actually thinking that a driver problem might be due to having those older Do Net versions. [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Jan 2020 06:55 PM PST My last Hard drive died so.I bought a new one but it says no operating system. That means that I need to re instal Windows correct? Where could I get a back up disk? I have a jump drive but it's only 3 GB so I can't create a back up jump drive. [link] [comments]
Windows10 Upgrade - Startup & Sleep Issues - Recommendations? Posted: 30 Jan 2020 08:40 PM PST Hey, I'm wondering if anyone has some ideas on what might be the issue with my desktop computer. I have had this computer for a long time, it was still running perfectly with Windows7 and I put off the upgrade until recently. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Everything seems to be working, but I'm having logon, restarting, and sleeping issues.
I have done all of the updates and updated all drivers that I could find for windows 10. I have linked my windows account, which MAY have been the start of all of my problems, leaving local account The weird thing is that everything works when I unplug the computer and hold the power button, and then plug back in and turn on. There must be an issue with the motherboard. Again, never had a problem with Windows7 Computer Specs:

Can you still upgrade to Windows 10 for free? Posted: 30 Jan 2020 07:01 PM PST I have a client who wants to upgrade to Windows 10 from 7 but I don't even know if you can still do it via the Windows 10 download tool/iso. I did all of my other clients BEFORE the 14th deadline. [link] [comments]
There is no way I can disable read-only... Posted: 30 Jan 2020 01:54 PM PST Today I bought and installed Oblivion from steam. Sadly I can't save game or change settings. I found in the internet that in Win10 this happens when game files have read-only turned on, so I have tried to change it. I had game instaled on my C drive. Windows was reverting my changes... then i moved my game to D drive which is only for storage, but it didn't help. I had used cmd (attrib -r +s(also without it, or with -s) D:\path ) with admin permissions and I also had changed most of security permissions :( What should I do? Install game on Linux??? pls help me I have posted also there: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/ewcsiu/there_is_no_way_i_can_disable_readonly/ [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Jan 2020 12:49 PM PST The only thing I'm really worried about is if windows won't be activated, I don't have it linked to a Microsoft account and right now I can't use windows without getting a blue screen unless I use safe mode and there is no way to do it in safe mode as far as I can tell [link] [comments]
USB wont show up in file explorer Posted: 30 Jan 2020 12:27 PM PST hello, I can reach the USB from the device manager and format it from minitool. Parental controls are the spawn of hell Posted: 30 Jan 2020 06:02 PM PST I disabled parental controls (sorry not telling how because then Microsoft will fuk it up then) and was wondering, where's the file that re-downloads parental controls when you delete them? I can't seem to find it. Reason being my activity was suddenly back after a week of being free from parental controls and I'm fukin pissed so I'm going to war again. Please help. P.S I didn't delete the parental controls file but it's somehow alive so I want to find every parental control file and try my something...... EDIT: Honestly just give me the address so I can stop it with cmd like this NET STOP (INSERT STUPID SCREEN TIME ADDRESS) I can stop the function so the Microsoft server doesn't automatically fix the screen time files [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Jan 2020 05:15 AM PST I was thinking of doing this method to run android apps on chrome but how well do they work? Posted: 30 Jan 2020 09:21 AM PST So I had a Minecraft world corrupt, and I went to go through the normal process for uncorrupt a world (which I have done before to other worlds). Normally what I do is I move the corrupted folder and the functional folder of the same seed but nothing built onto my desktop and work from there, then move the fixed folder back into C:\Users\[redacted]\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds However for some reason my PC decided to surprise me with "Your orginization does not allow you to place this file here". Wonderful, Windows 10 makes you feel like it thinks it's in charge sometimes... How can I fix this? It's really annoying how Windows 10 tells you what you can and can't do. [link] [comments]
Bulk change multiple folder icons in Windows 10 Posted: 30 Jan 2020 10:40 AM PST I have my music files organized by artist name and then by individual subfolders. I've replaced the default yellow folder icon with custom .ico files I created using the album cover art. The .ico files are stored in each individual album folder. My issue is that I have hundreds of folders that I would like to apply this to. As of right now, I am right clicking the folder and going through the "customize" process of changing the icon for that folder. I was wondering if anyone here has an idea for a batch file that would look in the folder for an .ico file and, if there is one, replace the default windows icon for that folder with the one I have moved in there. Really appreciate the help. [link] [comments]
I've recently built a PC but the alt key no longer functions. Posted: 30 Jan 2020 10:16 AM PST So as the title states, I've built a pc and I own a Corsair Strafe MK.2 (idk if this would help), and yes the pc in windows 10. But starting yesterday the alt key just stopped functioning when I was typing, it works fine with stuff like Alt+F4, it still quits the application, but when I try to type the alt options for keys (such as 2 being the @), it just doesnt do it.
