Posted: 02 Oct 2019 11:42 AM PDT Hey all, Just a quick question about equipment temps and heat buildup. Right now, I've got an Edgerouter 4 sitting on top of my ATT RG inside a closed TV cabinet. I left a temp gauge in there for a few hours and the max air temp was 84 degrees, which doesn't seem too bad (I guess?); but when I put my hand on top of the router, it was very warm to the touch-almost hot. Should I be worried about damage to the components, and if so what's a good fix? Unfortunately for now, they have to stay in that cabinet. But maybe I could put a small fan in there? Open to suggestions here. Here's a picture of what the space looks like: https://i.imgur.com/MCmACvt.jpg Thanks everybody! [link] [comments] |
Sharing a directory on a Windows server to non-domain users Posted: 02 Oct 2019 05:54 PM PDT So, I've seen this come up in a few places, and I'm not sure the easiest way to handle this. At my office, we have a Windows server and a domain with a few computers in it. But most of the users use Windows non-professional and are not in the domain. If I want to share some files from the server that's within the domain to those non-domain users, what is the best way to do that? The server does not handle any DHCP or DNS requests, that's all done with a pfSense box. pfSense has a DHCP reservation set aside for the server, but is that all that should be needed? If a non-domain user wants to grab a file from the server's open share, they often can't connect to the server. It works sometimes, but not others. They can ping the ip address and get it that way, but they have a few programs that have \\servername\share assigned instead of the ip address and those will just randomly not work. Or if it does work, they suddenly have to put in a network user name and password again. What is the best way to do this? I also help out at a local non-profit, and they have an almost identical setup with the same random problems. I'd like to fix this correctly so we don't have these issues. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Oct 2019 05:49 PM PDT Problems with connecting to ethernet I don't know if this belongs here, but I have very little experience with how ethernet works, and have recently built a new pc. I tried plugging it in, only to find that the ethernet port in my room is not connected to my modem. How do I connect my modem to the ethernet in my house so I can connect my computer through the ethernet socket I have? Thank you [link] [comments] |
How do you secure your Guest WiFi access? Posted: 02 Oct 2019 07:51 PM PDT I'd just like to open the floor to discussion. I've recently setup my Guest WiFi Portal for use when visitors are at my house. I can't decide whether I should enable secure authentication with WPA2 Personal or not. I know that sounds crazy but bear with me. I created an isolated VLAN for my Guest network. I'm using Ubiquiti's Guest Portal that asks for a password to authenticate and authorize clients. The guest network's default gateway is a pfsense firewall/router. Firewall rules are in place to prevent traffic from flowing into my internal network. The only thing is that I'm not using WPA2 security. So the only thing that my guest WiFi provides is internet service. It's even throttled to 10Mb down and 1 Mb up. I'm feeling like it's pretty safe. If I enable WPA2 just to connect to the network then isn't it a bit redundant to request a password at the Guest Portal? The only other thought is that without WPA2 enabled will all traffic on that network be sent in the clear? Maybe that's reason enough to enable it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Oct 2019 07:15 PM PDT Hey guys, So I am attempting to use the MoCa Networking capabilities from an RV Park's integrated cable WiFi and modem (802.11 AC). The issue at hand is that I am currently living at an RV park that has coaxial cable running to each lot, and this router/modem is like 100 feet away and used primarily for its WiFi. Both are separate. I'm not sure how the cable is set up, maybe the coaxial cable splits 7 ways to each lot, but long story short is that the WiFi is crap and barely reaches any lots. I saw these coaxial cables coming out of the ground and I figured I could use the MoCa networking with this. The question is: if I use an actiontec Ethernet to coax adaptor from the router that then splits 7 ways to each RV (no adaptor at any RV's), will this pose any issues? Could I buy my own adaptor for my lot, use it, and will this interrupt anyone's cable television? Sorry for the rant but I have done my best to learn about internet in general but this isn't exactly my strong subject. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Oct 2019 07:35 AM PDT So I needed a PoE WAP for my new home network and the choice came down to
I decided to go with the UniFi... and now the controller makes me want to get a USG to get the full experience. But do I really need it? Specs wise, the USG seems a little outdated. I currently use an Asus RT-AC68u which has been working great for what it does. What, if any, benefits would a USG provide over the Asus? Would I still get my full 500/500 speed? Will it provide better security and firewall features without compromising my 500/500 connection? Any advice is much appreciated [link] [comments] |
Way lower speeds from router that is connected for more range Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:31 AM PDT Not sure how to word this but I'll give it a shot , so I have my main router in one of my bedrooms and I have another router connected accross the hallway in another room to extend the coverage around the house , on my main router I'm getting download speeds of 50mbps and upload of around 20 mbps , but on the one connected for coverage I'm only getting speeds of 15-20 mbps download and more or less the same upload as the main router , would greatly appreciate any help thank you . How do I know which SFP to get? Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:40 PM PDT So I am building out a homelab, primarily to further my own knowledge for work, and secondly host a few things at home. I recently got an r720, there are 4 10Gbe ports without SFP's, and I am kind of lost at knowing which ones I should get and was hoping for guidance. I saw there were also SFP cables. I haven't purchased a managed switch yet, but am planning too (still have no idea which one, doing research). The adapters I have specifically are: Can I just buy some dell 10gbe SFP? Or does it matter? Y'all will probably see a fair bit of me on here over the next few months haha [link] [comments] |
My brand new TP-Link AC4000 freezes after an hour or so Posted: 02 Oct 2019 05:36 PM PDT I picked up a new TP-Link AC4000 today, replacing our CradlePoint Router. Everything is okay for a couple of minutes or hours, but then the device becomes unresponsive. The networks still show up ... but even if the computer can connect to the router -- I'm unable to get to the admin panel (or do anything). Only a factory reset will "solve it". I talked with their support, they made me disable NAT for now, to see how the router behaves. Very frustrating. I need this network up and running -- our navigation data for our boat is piped through the 2.4 GHz network. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Oct 2019 05:01 PM PDT I've had severe issues with my ISP now named 'Nextwave Wireless,' and I'm hoping some suggestions on here can help me get through to the owners. I'll start off with the issues, and then below I'll explain what I've done to try to counteract the issues and the nightmarish support I've had to endure. At the moment I'm having severe ping spikes. It stays right around 15ms if pinging somewhere close to me and then it spikes constantly to around 35 and up to around 50. No matter what I do I can't get it to stop spiking. At night it spikes to around 100 ms constantly only rarely dropping down to 20ms. My ISP has set me on different frequencies and sometimes it'll get better and then it'll just go back to spiking again. Online gaming is absolute hell. One minute it'll be fine and then all of the sudden my ping starts spiking again and it's completely unplayable. Here's where it's a mess. I've been in contact with the company for over a year about this issue. At this point every time I contact them it's a hit or miss if they ever contact me back. If they do finally contact me back it's always some excuse on how they're getting a huge upgrade to the towers blah blah they're always spouting about some huge upgrade that never comes. It's made me blow up on them multiple times, and the owner has gotten in contact with me on a phone call twice due to my outrage saying he'll try to fix it and that they're 'extremely busy' which I highly doubt. A company shouldn't have their customer have the same issue for over 2 years. I could go on for days on how they're just not helping, but there's no point. They ended up putting me on my own radio alone so that no one's connection is dragging me down about a year ago but the spikes continue. Recently the owner told me they have a new logging program and he says he can now see the exact issues when it happens. When I try to tell him the spikes are at the highest around 8pm to 1am he says all he can see is a small spike and that he'll need to collect more data. Before years ago if I had an issue with the company that previously owned it my issues would be resolved within days and they'd have a tech out immediately.. now it's next to impossible to get them to fix anything. They never respond and they're constantly cutting the line to their phones so now my contact this past year has solely been through email. My question is what can I do to fix this issue? I've tried brand new routers, I've tried directly connecting and limiting my bandwidth to counter act buffer bloat but the spikes are still there. I know it's on their end, but I don't know what I could tell these ignorant workers to get them to fix my issues. I'm tired of blowing up on them because at then end of the day the problem is never fixed. [link] [comments] |

Wi-Fi Booster Range Extender question? Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:11 PM PDT My mother who is not too tech-savvy complains she gets poor wifi in her home in certain parts of the house as there are a lot of dividing walls. I have recommended a wifi range extender. I am about to buy her 3 wifi range extenders on amazon and get it delivered to her home, but had a thought. That is to say, if my moms is using her phone in a room where the wifi range extender is but then moves room far away from the wifi range extender won't she have to manually change the wifi connection to get the strongest signal, wont she end up at square one and experience poor wifi. In this instance, she would have to change the wifi connection to any of the other wifi range extenders or the main router, every time she moves around the house? Is this how it works? I was hoping that it will be automatic so that my mom gets the strongest signal wherever she is without having to manually change wifi connections as she is not too tech savvy. I'm just trying to make this easy for my mom so that she doesn't have to do too much. The thought of her having to change wifi connection every time she moves to a different part of the house probably won't work. Appreciate any help on me trying to understanding this? PS - I know I could also but a better stronger main router but I live in another country and that is a lot more work than my mom definitely won't be able to handle. [link] [comments] |
Need help in new apartment 5e module Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:06 PM PDT Problem with 5e module apartment I just moved into a new apartment that has Ethernet ports at each tv location with a Leviton 5e module in the closet. I am trying to plug my cable model into one port and then the router into the module so I can have some smart home devices in the closet and then one line out of the router back to the other port at the other tv. None of this is working. Do I need a different type of cable or should regular cat 5 be working. [link] [comments] |
How do I set up WiFi in this situation? Posted: 02 Oct 2019 09:45 AM PDT There is a main house with internet. Some distance away is a shop/garage with an Ethernet outlet that was hard wired in when the house was constructed. I want WiFi in the garage. How do I make this happen? Please explain it to me like I am five; I know absolutely nothing about internet hooky upy stuff. I have tried to google this question, but I'm still not clear. Can I just plug a router into it and be done with it? Do I need some kind of other equipment? Do the routers have to be the same or on the same channel? Even if it seems obvious to you, tell me, because I can guarantee it's not obvious to me! [link] [comments] |
How to Share Ethernet Connection via (Mobile Hotstop) Laptop? Posted: 02 Oct 2019 11:46 AM PDT I recently just moved in and the place uses an ethernet internet connection. I bought an ethernet cable and its adapter then connected it to my laptop. I was thinking to use my laptop as a mobile hotspot to connect the internet to my phone. I tried it, and although my phone could connect to the wifi, no internet connection was on my phone (in my laptop it works just fine). So I tried and see what was the problem, and it's probably this : I tried to choose Gigaspeedsurfer as that's what i'm using, but there's no option for it, only network 2. I suppose that was the problem, but i can't fix it. Anyone can help me to fix this or maybe propose another solution to use the wifi as mobile hotspot? Thanks before! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Oct 2019 11:07 AM PDT (I posted this in r/piHole) Custom DNS on BT HomeHub 5? I've just set up my Pi-Hole using a raspberry pi 3 I've got my iPhone and iPad set to use it as it's dns and it works great However I want to set it as the main dns server for my hole network, my primary router is a BT HomeHub v5 but I can't find a way to change it's dns Server however some people appear to have done it, so it is possible but I can't Find how to do it and the ways I have found seem to be outdated as they require Menus that no longer exist or settings that are hidden Anyone with a HomeHub managed to do this? Posted: 02 Oct 2019 04:17 PM PDT So I was doing some networking related stuff at home and was wondering if there is a way to do Port forwarding without a router. I know how to set up Port forwarding with a router but I don't know if there is a way to do it without. I have a pretty basic knowledge on networking, but is it possible to Port forward without a router? [link] [comments] |

ARRIS NVG44x for 500 mbps fiber? Posted: 02 Oct 2019 08:49 AM PDT Looking at changing internet providers and one of them offers 500/500 mbps fiber. They do not support 3rd party routers and offer the ARRIS NVG44x as their supported fiber router. Spec sheet: https://www.arris.com/globalassets/resources/data-sheets/nvg44x_datasheet.pdf They offer the option to buy the router instead of renting it but not sure if this is a decent enough router to consider buying. You do save $40 buying the router in the long run ($200 upfront vs $10/month rental for 24 month) so I'm inclined to buy it instead of renting (plus then at the end of the 24 months you still have the router). I know enough to ask basic questions but figured I'd come to the more experienced to see if the router good enough to consider buying. [link] [comments] |
Trying to setup an old TP-Link Router as a switch Posted: 02 Oct 2019 02:27 PM PDT I am trying to setup a TP-Link Archer C7 as a switch for my 2 gaming systems. Currently my network is: 2 Orbi Satellites>Orbi Router (RBK20)>Actiontec C3000A Cable Modem I have the Orbi router in router mode. The Orbi router is "obtaining its IP address from the modem". The problem is, the TP-Link admin page is 192.168.1.1, which is the IP to the Orbi router. If I try to go to 'tplinkwifi.net' it brings me to a fail page (probably because it is DNS'ing to 192.168.1.1). So then I statically assigned an IP address to the Orbi router as 192.168.1.200 which was previously 192.168.1.1. When I did this the internet disconnected, and when I ethernet-ted into the Orbi router it said it changed the IP address to 10.0.0.1 to "avoid conflict with ISP modem". I just want to get into the admin page of the TP-Link router to disable wifi, dhcp, etc so I can use this as a switch. If you need me to further explain please let me know. Thanks for your help! How to access server from PC, with different VLANs? (ping works, but not server software) Posted: 02 Oct 2019 02:27 PM PDT Hi, If I move them both under same VLAN, let's say both under 192.168.3.X, then everything is fine. Is it possible to have them communicating from different VLANs? (I am using Unifi, with manually set IP addresses and Network for server and PC. Also, selecting relevant Switch Port Profile (tags?) in switch port settings, so for instance for server, it would be Network 2, IP 192.168.2.10, Switch Port Profile 2). P.S. In the manual for the server, it says that "Server and PC must be in the same network". But is there no way to have them in different networks/vlans? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Oct 2019 02:14 PM PDT I have a regular modem+router (Steve modem) provided by the ISP, Virgin. It barely covers the entire house and at the furthest place, the network gets disconnected easily. I was thinking of getting either a router or extender to cover the grey areas of the house but I'm worried that with additional equipment on the network, it'll diminish the strength of the signal or regularly gets disconnected to connect to a different channel/bandwidth. Which would have a lesser impact on the network? I appreciate any thoughts or suggestions! [link] [comments] |
Help please :) Upstream and Downstream errors! Posted: 02 Oct 2019 02:04 PM PDT I got a new modem about 1 month ago, its not been working and I've called my ISP everyday for help on how to fix it. They keep saying it'll work if I just reset because they see the connection between us and them. However this never works and I'd like to know if any of you might be able to help me. The problem is in my modem I believe, the DS (downstream) light is constant however the US (Upstream) light is blinking. I can also get the Internet light to constantly stay on if I connect it to my router. Any ideas on how I could fix this? [link] [comments] |
Getting T3 error modem timeouts when using near-max download speed Posted: 02 Oct 2019 02:01 PM PDT Model: Arris TM1602A Speed: 400Mbps When nearing the limit of my 400Mbps download speed, once every couple times my modem will completely reboot. Checking the modem log I will see the below code 82000200 error.
This only happens when downloading at fast speeds. I'm hoping someone can guide me in a possible direction on how to troubleshoot this. Let me know if you want me to upload my RF table. Thanks [link] [comments] |
