Device backlight is gone. Windows machine is not picking it up as a drive. How can I access items on the device?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 06:15 PM PDT

Sorry, need some tech support here. Connecting the device via USB makes the typical windows noise when you connect something, however it does not show up under my Devices and Drives. Also, Android screen mirroring apps do not detect it. The device works, I can hear it trying to do stuff when I click on the screen, but again it's completely black. Any suggestions?

Should I upgrade my phone for 2019-2020? if so should it be the the moto z4 or pixel 3a?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 07:35 AM PDT

Right now I have a moto z2 force that I bought in January 2018 for $375 (which was a pretty good deal back then) and I'm thinking if I should upgrade it or not. However, I do want to save money though for other things too. Here are my pros and con's that I have about my phone right now

Pros: I love the moto mods, it still performs well because of the old flagship snapdragon 835 and because it's near stock android, the shatterproof screen, the aluminum build, and camera (because I use the google camera apk and not the main camera app.) (can't think of any more)

Cons: I don't use moto mods that much (except for the battery), It really sucked when I wasn't going to get android pie, the battery suck on my phone without the mods, it gets glitchy sometimes for no reason and I don't have any security updates anymore. (can't think of any more)

here are the pros and cons if I get any of these phones:

    moto z4

Pro: my moto mods still work, headphone jack back, lots of storage plus SD card, lots of new features, it's glass, so it won't scratch as easy, and it does not have lots bezel. (can't think of any more)

con: should be fast enough even though the chip is a bit slower than my phone right now (I've only had android phones with the snapdragon 800's series, so I won't know how my experience downgrading is.), one camera only, updates on moto are meh (bit salty after they announced that there will be no android P on my phone right now, but at least it's trying to be close as stock as it can). (can't think of any more)

    pixel 3a

pro: fastest updates, amazing camera, cool software features, cheaper, stock android, and also has a headphone jack. Basically a pixel 3 with some drawbacks. (can't think of any more)

con: its plastic, no SD card, no water resistance (at least the moto z4 has water repellant), and my moto mods will just be a waste and won't be used anymore. (can't think of any more)

    Thanks for helping me decide.

However, if you have any other suggestion here are I must have:

$650 max (high school student here on a budget), good camera, battery, updates, and performance (doesn't have to max performance though, but just good enough

    Here are my wants:

minimal bezel, water-resistant, and one odd quirk (a cool feature no other phone has)

P.S if they are old flagships then they must still be able to have some available updates. Also, I have t-mobile, but it can be an unlocked phone too and NO iPhones.

Again thanks for helping me Reddit people.

If I'm looking to extend the life of an ageing Android device (2017) should I or should I not enable Play Store updates?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 08:37 PM PDT

I feel apps are designed to work with increasingly more capable hardware and that just leaves the old devices unusable. But online research seems to suggest that getting updates is better as apps get performance improvements with updates. Let's ignore security vulnerabilities.

How to optimize phone for gaming performance ?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 08:28 PM PDT

So I bought an Oppo f11 pro with [Mediatek Helio p70 processor] and [Mali G72 mp3 GPU] a couple of months ago. The phone has a 1080p display and doesn't cause me much lag at all. But I'm only able to play PUBG mobile at 60fps medium settings(low settings after the device gets heated up 15-20 minutes into gaming). The phone has 6GB of RAM. It has 30 out of its 64 GB internal storage free. Is there anything I can do to increase the gaming performance ? I'm willing to trade in my battery life for better performance. (The computer Geekbench 5 score of the phone is 688). The phone also struggles with simplerockets2, which is a rocket simulator game, only churning out 30 fps in low-medium settings. Please gimme non root solutions. Every other game I tried including Asphalt9 runs at 60fps at high settings.

Instagram showing when phone is locked!

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 05:57 PM PDT

I'm not really sure why this is happening now. Sometimes when I go to my instagram messages with someone, lock my phone, then wake it back up, the messages are right there! I can reply and everything, but to do anything else, I have to unlock my phone. How can I disable this? I don't recall this ever happening before. I just now noticed that it isn't doing it currently, but I want to make sure it doesn't happen again. I don't want someone to pick up my phone and see all my messages.

Notifications. Want to hear but dont want to see! Help.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 11:43 AM PDT

    Hello,

Brand new to android and there are just so many options. Tried googling but all i can find are answers on how to disable notifications all together. I dont want to disable the notifications i just want to removed them from the notification panel/lock screen.

I use my phone for work and that means i get a million emails. I need to know when i recieve them audibly so i can respond asap, but im already tired of swiping and clearing that bar/page. Not only that but all my other notifications get lost. How do i get rid of the notification panel for just my emails and not my other apps?

    Thanks.

Also to meantion i spent way longer than i care to admit, scrolling aimlessly through various settings under notifications, noifications panel, my email settings etc etc, and came up empty.

    Thanks again.

Samsung J5 with less than a few apps and pics/videos but internal memory is 90% used

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 11:38 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I'm trying to help a old folk overseas with literally no access to tech support. His phone is Samsung J5 which has 8.2GB internal memory. I used his friend's phone video call to patiently check everything visually and I see he has just a very few small apps and pictures. Phone memory is 90% full. In "my files" I asked him to delete Telegram and WhatsApp folders. The only leftover folder ls were Android and DCIM with maybe 20 pictures in it and no video. He has Instagram too but there is no folder for it and not sure how to delete its cache, if this app can cause the problem. I even uninstalled the updates for the apps that he never use, like YouTube or other stock apps. I would absolutely appreciate someone to tell me where this missing storage can be in the phone?

Android lockdown mode - better ways to activate it?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 08:08 PM PDT

So I like lockdown mode, that is a great feature. But honestly, I can think of situations in which you wouldn't be able to activate it when you need to - I'm sure you can use your imagination. So are there better ways to activate lockdown mode, other than the lockscreen menu?

Ideally you could do it via a voice command, a simple physical button press pattern, or a single button on a home screen...something where your hands have about a second to do what they need to do, or might not be able to do anything.

I looked through the API reference for Android 9 and 10, and I don't see a mention of lockdown mode. Does anyone have more information on if this is something that can be done with an API?

Android 10 on Pixel 3a - lock screen

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 07:46 PM PDT

I just got the Android 10 update and noticed something. I used to have the phone set to show only the clock and notifications with a black screen when double tapped or when tilting the phone towards me. After the update the whole lock screen turns on, background and all, when I do this. I can't seem to find where to change this setting. Was this feature removed? If not, how do I get it activated again?

    Audio Issues?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 07:08 PM PDT

    Hello

As the title suggests, my phone has been having some rather odd audio issues as of recent.

It started Tuesday morning when my FM transmitter unplugged itself from my headphone jack from picking up my phone. When I went to plug it back in and resume my music, the audio was exclusively coming out of the built-in speaker. I assumed the wire on my transmitter was bad so I tried some headphones which, to my disappointment, still didn't work. Keep in mind the built-in speaker works normally and the sound will go as loud as it can when at max.

I spent hours trying to fix it. I tried using some bluetooth earbuds to see if it had something to do with just the jack. It worked but not in the way it should have. It's extremely quiet in one ear bud and below normal volume on the other. (This was with my volume set to max.) I also tried running my phone in safe mode to see if it was an app acting up but it still occurred in safe-mode and after resetting my phone.

Considering I use my phone for media quite often for my commute to campus & work, I'm at a loss. I would like to avoid having to factory reset my phone as it has a lot of valuable information. I would transfer it to my computer otherwise but I both, don't have me computer on me as it's being repaired and I don't have a sufficient cable to transfer my data.

    Any help is appreciated

    Phone model: Samsung Galaxy S6
    Carrier: AT&T
    Android version: Nougat 7.0
    Kernel v3.10.61
    (Yes, I've checked for updates)
(I've reset my phone several times now
)(I've booted into safe mode and reset after)
(I have attempted to search for the same issue online with not results)
(I also have checked my headphones and bluetooth earbuds to see if it was an issue pertaining to said devices with both of them working as intended)
[I have NOT looked into the root menu]

Audio cutting in/out when connected to Car via Bluetooth

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 06:46 PM PDT

Using a Galaxy S10. This issue started occurring randomly the other day, prior to this it was working fine.

Audible and podcasts (through the Pocket Casts app) have started cutting in and out intermittently, usually when there's a brief silence in between sentences. It will then cut back in halfway through the start of the narrator/hosts next sentence.

The issue does not affect Spotify which is strange.

I've tried re-pairing my phone, and force stopping the apps and clearing cache/data which haven't worked.

    Anyone have any ideas?

I recently updated to Android Pie on LG G6, and I now have access to the screenshot edit menu. I want to disable it, but whereas most devices get it as a notification, and thus an option to select it, I cannot interact with it beyond pressing the three buttons. How can I get rid of this?

Does Chrome keep "expired" i.e. old browsing history indefinitely, provided I don't open the app - or is this a ticking bomb? :o

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 06:55 AM PDT

When I open Chrome, my history going back to early May starts getting auto-deleted - 2-3 deletions per minute, each covering several minutes.

However when it's closed, it stays intact and then continues where it left off when I open Chrome again.

Or at least that's how it's been so far, for the last several weeks - can I rely on this staying this way, the last seen history staying untouched indefinitely as long as I don't open the app, while I'm trying to find ways to save/extract it etc.?

I know it doesn't work that way on PC Windows - it keeps eating away at the history even when it's closed; so that's a feature that makes Android different?

    Airdrop on android?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 01:33 PM PDT

For people who don't know what airdrop is. It is a feature on apple devices to send pretty much any sharable app or website on your device to another device very fast.

So my question is. Is there a setting or something on an android phone to send stuff to an android phone. Without using 3th party apps?

Flashing a S7 Edge Live Demo unit

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 06:33 AM PDT

    Hi all!

So I got a hold of a Samsung S7 Edge live demo unit (it was used for VR), and I wanted to try flashing a custom (or even stock) rom, but I've had little success.

I've managed to get TWRP on it at least, so that's taken care of, but I can't seem to get around the zip verification error, even though I've disabled it in the settings.

    Model: SM-G935X

    Any help is much appreciated!
