Hey Google, stop using me as a lab rat for your dark mode A/B testing

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 06:31 PM PDT

    Rant incoming:

Two weeks ago I was delighted to find that my Google app has finally joined the dark mode club. The joy didn't last long though: After two days dark mode was gone again, so I went ahead and installed the latest beta. First it was still glaring white, but after a day or so I was back on the dark side. This lasted for about one and a half weeks. Today I woke up with a glaring white Google app again.

Seriously Google, how is that considered good user experience?

The same happened with Play Store, I had dark more for like 2 days only for it to vanish again.

I get the concept of A/B testing, but what Google is doing is excessive. A/B testing should be giving one group of users a feature, test it, roll it out to the next group, etc. and not "give group A feature X, take it away, reintroduce it, take it away again and bring it back again".

Stop using me as a lab rat for your A/B testing shenanigans, Google! This whole mess is really driving me towards ditching Google apps altogether.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 09:26 AM PDT

Microsoft just released a surface phone duo. Anyone who hasn't seen it, it's a gorgeous hardware. But I was surprised they used android. I thought they would give windows phone another go. But probably the right decision if they wana sell more. But wow surface has the most gorgeous hardware and design. Period.

Story: Your information may not be safe from thieves. Enable PIN and CHANGE it on your SIM or disable 2FA by SMS to protect yourself.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 04:11 AM PDT

TLDR: thieves stole 2 phones from me and my sister and managed to reset passwords using my SIM card. To avoid this, enable and change the PIN on your SIM or don't use 2FA by SMS to protect your information if your phone is stolen!

Last year my phone was stolen, but the thiefs didn't know my screen passcode. I thought my information was secure and I called my carrier to cancel my line. But, in the meantime they managed to reset my Facebook password and got access to a lot of my information.

2 days ago, my sister's phone got stolen, but they didn't get her password aswell and she also called her carrier to cancel her line. But this guys are fast and they managed to reset her Google password and access all her stored password, including her bank account. They even managed to transfer money from her account!

My point is, when they get your phone, first thing they will do is put your SIM card on another phone, find your e-mail somehow and try to reset your account from Google, Facebook, Amazon, PayPal or any other that allows two factor authentication by SMS!

So, you should ENABLE the PIN code on your SIM and change it! This way, it will make almost impossible for them to use you SIM on another phone, because it will ask for this number, so they won't be able to reset your password. Usually every carrier has a default PIN, but is by default OFF, so you have to find out yours, enable and change it. But be careful, because if you write your PIN wrong three times it will lock your SIM and you will need the PUK code (unique for every one) or call your carrier to help you.

Example of default PIN for companies:

    AT&T: 1111 Verizon: 1111 Rogers: 1234

Another option is to not use two factor authentication by SMS and start using apps like Google Authenticator. Also, if you have an eSim probably this is not a problem to you.

Here is a website explaining how to enable and change you SIM's PIN:
