What happened to the google weather frog? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 06:53 PM PDT My weather app just shows clouds or whatever now but I miss seeing the frog, does anyone know how I may get him back? Here's a screenshot of the frog: https://i.imgur.com/tLvDQ0d.gif [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2019 05:53 PM PDT I think these problems are related. I've wiped the cache partition with no good result. When I try and uninstall the apps on the SD that does not exist, the system reboots. If I try and update those apps, it downloads then hangs at installing till it fails. I don't have an SD card to install to test and see if that will fix anything, at least at the moment. Thank you for your time and I'll be glad to provide any further details needed. How do I transfer my old text messages to my new phone? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 10:14 PM PDT I sometimes like to review my old text messages, but they've all disappeared as soon as I got my new phone. I can still retrieve my old phone,so once I do, I wonder how I can transfer text messages from my old phone to my new one. Thanks. My old phone is an LG V20. My new phone is the LG G8. Carrier is Sprint. [link] [comments] |
How to use a USB GPS on android Posted: 29 Sep 2019 09:59 AM PDT My Google Pixel doesn't have a working GPS. Super annoying, other than that phone works great. I'm at a point where I need a working GPS. I've been stranded a couple of times now since I don't know how to get back. Before I get a new phone I want to try using an external GPS. I have no idea how to get my phone to use the external GPS data though. If I use a serial monitor I see the incoming data but no other app can see this data. Anyone have a work around? I think I need to use the mock locations setting in dev options but I'm not sure what app can take the external data and use as a mock location. [link] [comments] |
LG phoenix screen is unusable- can I still enable USB debugging somehow? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 06:50 PM PDT My screen had cracked recently and the replacement didn't go quite so well. Now I can no longer see any images or anything on my phone and I don't know if the touch controls work either (I can't see the screen to judge if it works). I can still access it through USB but I don't have USB debugging enabled so that I can screenshare the device and try and make sure everything is off of it that is important. Is there any sort of way to enable USB debugging without being able to see the screen/settings/anything and without being able to use the touchscreen? Is there any way to modify the settings through the files? Editing the settings files in some way? [link] [comments] |
Android 8 - notification icons keep rearranging themselves? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 08:11 PM PDT I have a Sony xperia xa2 running Android 8. Some of the notification icons just keep rearranging themselves. Nothing triggers this, I'm not getting any new notifications, I can just be using the browser or something and I will see them switching places every few seconds or so. It's very distracting. I can't figure out what could be the cause of this? [link] [comments] |
Is it wise to unlock the bootloader of a phone that's still under warranty? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 06:51 PM PDT My heavily customized Galaxy S4 shows serious signs of hardware failure, that's why I got myself a brand new Moto G6 Plus. As you can imagine, the transition is kinda bumpy since a ton of unofficial apps no longer work. There are some things I'd like to keep using (most importantly TWRP), but I'm not comfortable with the idea to void my two year warranty on the second day. Is there a safe way to cover my tracks in case I need to RMA it or does it have some kind of e-fuse that gets blown the moment you mess with the bootloader? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2019 10:26 PM PDT Dunno what happened. I updated to 9.0, and suddenly chrome is crashing on certain websites 100% of the time ( wellsfargo.com for example, but it also applies to best buy's citi credit card site. ) . I do have quite a few installed apps, but this worked just fine prior to the 9.0 update on my phone ( Razer Phone ) . When I factory reset my phone, it's fine, but then after a while it behaves like that again. I have cleaned cookies / cache. This also happens even in safe mode in my phone. ( with all 3rd party applicatons disabled) It happens with Chrome Beta, and Chrome Dev. This is an issue because I cannot access my bank application to scan checks. ( Think it uses chrome on the backend). I cannot even login unless java is enabled. It also happens if I visit the website directly in Chrome. Looking at the stack trace output, I see "jni_android.cc(249)" and some whining about a java error, so I turned Java off...but this is a bandaid for what I actually need. If there is some way to stop a 3rd party application from using java, that might also work. [link] [comments] |
Need help/advice about extracting GPS track data from an old My Tracks app clone Posted: 29 Sep 2019 04:25 PM PDT I'm not sure if I'm in the right sub for this, but here it goes: For the last two years, I've been tracking my various running/cycling/hiking activities using a clone of the now defunct Google My Tracks app on my Pixel 1 (using Verizon, but I don't think that should matter for reasons that will become clear). The My Tracks clone, itself, appears to now be defunct, and many of the features beyond simply tracking my movement don't work anymore (e.g. syncing to Drive, importing/exporting files, etc.), although to be honest I'm not sure if they ever did work. Unfortunately, I can't find any information about the author of the app, since it has been removed from the play store and was simply called 'Tracks' with the same icon as the old Google app. So here's the issue, I have upgraded my tracking equipment and would like to export all of my tracks from my Pixel in any of the standard GPS formats (kml, gpx, etc.). As previously stated, it won't sync to Drive, and when I try to export the tracks it says the external memory isn't writable. I did some digging and found that there isn't even the requisite My Tracks directory on my phone anymore. When I made one with the correctly labelled subfolders, the error during export says something unexpected occurred and 0 out of X tracks were exported. I did some more digging and found the folder with all the app data. It was in a directory labelled "com.zihua.android.mytracks", but when I open it, all it contains is a cache with ten files, none of which are standard GPS tracks. Eight of the files appear with *.m extensions (which I believe to be objective C files, although I could be wrong), and the other two have *.0 extensions (that's a zero, no idea what that means). I copied this directory into my drive as a 'backup' in case my phone gets bricked somehow, so time isn't necessarily of the essence here. The complete list of files in the app cache are here. Edit: I did a little more research and it seems like I may have an old version of the main My Tracks clone authored by Daniel Qin that never updated after I originally downloaded it. I downloaded the newest version and it would not sync with data from the old app, or allow me to import any of the the files in the above listed cache since they are not GPS file formats. Hope this extra information helps. I will keep digging and add to this if I find anything else that may be pertinent information. Double Edit: Attempting to "export" by playing tracks, which opens them in Google Earth, also didn't work and gave me an error saying that they aren't KML/KMZ files. In addition, attempting to share a track failed because the app won't sync to my Drive. It seems that all I have to work with are the ten BIN files in the app cache, unless there are more files hidden somewhere on my phone. I have a little programming experience but not nearly enough to decipher what these files are or how to access them. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with these file types in this context, how to navigate them, and if it is possible to extract the requisite GPS track files out of them; or, if anyone has experience extracting track data from My Tracks/My Tracks clones that has a different idea about how to get them off my phone. Any help, even if it's just pointing me to a more relevant sub, would be greatly appreciated. I have a weird attachment to a few of the tracks so would not like to lose them when I inevitably upgrade my phone. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Samsung One UI: How to change default contact colors/themes? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 06:00 PM PDT I have the note 9, and ever since Samsung's One UI was released earlier this year, it reassigned my contacts' default photos to random colors/themes. I never use photos for contacts so I always just leave them as default. Before One UI was released, the incoming call screen would be a gradient of whatever colors my lock screen was. Now it's based on the color assigned to the caller. However I can't seem to change this. For example, relative #1 is assigned pink by default, so when they call my phone flashes pink. Relative #2 is also assigned pink so my phone flashes pink when they call as well. I want to be able to change the colors so that my main contacts are different colors both when calling and on People's edge. Any way to do this? I can't seem to find the solution through basic search. [link] [comments] |
Messaging app for S10 to iPad without a phone number Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:45 PM PDT Hello all - I'm after a app I can use to message my kids. They are both under 13 and have iPads. When I had a iPhone it was easy to message to their iCloud email account. So now I have a S10 I'm looking for something I can message and send photos to them without needing a phone number to create the account. I've seen messenger for kids but it is not available in my country yet. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Androids sending HD videos to others Posted: 29 Sep 2019 09:43 AM PDT This is a serious question from an iPhone user that's willing to swap to android. My question to you is this. When my wife and I purchased the galaxy s9 last year it was a great phone minus 1 thing. Every time we tried to send a video to one another it came through like hot garbage on a shit platter. I was told "just use Facebook messenger" well I'm one of the weird people in this world that have no social media, I have a reddit account and I have an imgur account. Besides that I prefer to not have social media so is there a 3rd party app that can handle this besides messenger on Facebook? Is there a setting on these phones I'm unaware of. Please help I love the note 10 and what it has to offer I shoot lots of videos with my drone and it would be very beneficial to just move the videos with an SD card but after that I can't send them anywhere. Thanks in advance for the help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2019 05:19 PM PDT i was looking at the pixel 3a. i like that it's plastic, i don't want all glass, seems like a shatter risk, i love that it has a headphone jack, good battery life, and its camera is great. but the processor is mid range. but i'm not a heavy cell phone user. the pixel 3, on the other hand, has a much better processor, but really there's nothing else that i like about it. the problem is that the pixel 3, right now in Canada, is on sale for $600 ($400 discount), and the pixel 3a is $550 (no discount). it just doesn't seem worth buying the lower quality phone, even though there are several things about it that i prefer over the higher quality phone. from what i understand the Pixel 4, which will replace the pixel 3, is coming out in about 2 weeks, so that's probably why the 3 is so cheap right now. my questions are: 1) in 2 weeks, when the pixel 4 comes out, do you think there will be a reduction in price on the 3a, to make it a realistic purchase over the 3? 2) the used market seems to be really good for cell phones. seems there are a lot of people who buy new cellphones often, so the second hand market is a buyers market. maybe i could monitor used unlocked 3as and get one really cheap. is this a reasonable idea? i'm in a city, so i'd go check out the phone before buying. i saw people saying don't buy the pixel 3 used, as there were some problems with it. but nothing about the 3a. i looked at past posts, and while there were some similar questions to mine that were answered, they didn't quite answer my questions. thanks [link] [comments] |
Phones with a camera "notch" have completely screwed up video playback Posted: 29 Sep 2019 02:52 PM PDT Is there any way to force apps to run in 16:9? Both MX Player and VLC think "fit to screen" means crop the top and bottom of a 16:9 video to fit it on the 20:9 screen, and then play it in the area where the camera notch is, making the video obscured by the notch and the top and bottom portions of the video completely removed. I can't find any aspect ratio setting in either of these video players that actually plays in 16:9, it's like the phone is tricking the apps into thinking there's extra screen space off-display. Any media player app that supports proper HDR playback Posted: 29 Sep 2019 06:09 PM PDT That means no conversion to sdr, no tonemapping sdr output, etc. Just HDR output. I know Kodi does, but that's very clunky to use on mobile. [link] [comments] |

Laptop not responding to phone plugged in. Posted: 29 Sep 2019 12:18 PM PDT I plugged my phone to my laptop and nothing happens on my PC. The display on my phone is broken (the AMOLED panel is completely black and the touch screen does not respond) but everything else works (I can turn the device off an on, vibration works, I can unlock it with my fingerprint). The LED light goes on my phone to indicate it is connected and fully charged. What can I do? Phone: OnePlus 3T running Android Laptop: Running Windows 10 [link] [comments] |
USB-C MicroSD with Charging Passthrough? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 12:14 PM PDT So the unfortunate trend lately for the latest Android phones is to not have MicroSD slots. This is particularly bad with the selection of phones in the US where I live. I'm what you'd call a "power user" as my phone is essentially my portable PC. I do a ton of stuff on it and have a ton of locally stored files. On my previous phones I've been able to make do with cheaper models that shipped with less internal storage and used cheap MicroSD storage for anything that wasn't an app. But this new trend is making that impossible. I'm currently deciding between the OnePlus 7 Pro and the Asus ROG Phone 2. Neither has MicroSD, but the Asus at least comes with 512GB internal which I could probably live with, however it's retailing at $899(ouch). One workaround I was thinking of was a USB-C to MicroSD adapter. That way I could probably live with 256GB in the OP7P and offload less needed stuff to the MicroSD. But it'd be really inconvenient if I couldn't charge my phone while using the MicroSD. So I was wondering if there was a MicroSD adapter with charging passthrough? I'm looking for a small/slim adapter that I could just leave attached to the charging cable I carry with me, but currently I've only found bulky hubs that have a bunch of extra ports and hardware I don't need and don't want to pay for. Has anybody seen such an adapter for sale? [link] [comments] |
Chrome desktop shortcut without address bar? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 12:11 PM PDT I recently created a desktop shortcut using Chrome on my android and it doesn't have the address bar. How to disable headset buttons? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 12:02 PM PDT I have a faulty headset (3.5mm wired one ). The buttons just randomly reduce the volume of the phone to 0. It's so annoying.
