What keyboard macro tools do you use? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:51 AM PDT Hey, So I use Autohotkey on Windows to rebind keyboard keys or create hot keys that carry out a series of tasks. For example I use space as a modifier and asdf as arrow keys. Or read the contents of a file, store in clipboard then paste. Is there a Linux equivelant of this? I've heard of auto key but it looks like it doesn't do all of these features. TIA, K [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Sep 2019 08:18 PM PDT I mainly use Linux for Programming. I found Ubuntu to be very dull. On a secondary note, if I just install Kubuntu, do I get the goodies of Ubuntu with the looks of KDE? [link] [comments] |
Is there a way I can save the output from a terminal session? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 10:54 AM PDT I'm trying to implement a tagging feature for mpv, where if I have bound a key to error mpv out in the terminal into a string labeled as the tag. My idea, is to at the end of this, use grep to go back through the terminal session and filter out the tagged strings and compile their file locations into a list. The problem I'm running into is that the terminal (terminator or termix) that I"m using is cutting off after so many lines and erasing what was above it. I need to have the whole output of the session saved in order for my idea to work. Ideally, I'd like to do something like: OutputFromTheTerminalSession >> temporarySessionHistory.file and then I would be able to use grep to manipulate the temporarySessionHistory.file [link] [comments] |
Help needed - Linux Mate 19.2 and "emergency mode" message Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:59 PM PDT Hi, I need help with the following message I now have. I have been using Linux Mate 19.2 since a bit more than a month after using Zorin. I changed because of a corrupted boot sector so since I had to wipe everything I decided to try Mate. This afternoon I wanted to mount my Synology folders to Linux. I followed these instructions: https://www.mitchmusarra.com/configure-nfs-mount-with-synology-nas-on-ubuntu-18-04/ I had no issue and even the "helloworld.txt" worked. So I edited the etc/fstab using gedit (instead of nano). I have checked that the mount command was as per the next to last image. I finished by doing "sudo reboot". The Mate logo with 5 dots appeared. It stayed and I could see the 5 dots changing colors. 5 min later still nothing. So, annoyed and impatient, I hit the power button. When restarting the computer I got the following screen. Whatever I do I cannot get Mate to load. Either I end up in the PC configuration where I can change bios settings or, if I type "exit" I get back to the Linux Mint boot screen and nothing happens until I get back to the "You are in emergency mode" message. CTRL-D also brings me back to the same screen. When looking at the log the error I see is the following: [Firmware Bug]: TSC_DEADLINE disabled due to Errata; please update microcode to version: 0x20 (or later) Reading about this tells me I need to update the intel microcode. However when I follow the instructions it does not work. All I get are "failed to fetch...". I presume I am not online in the mode the PC is currently in so it cannot access the remote repositories. What are my options to get out of this mess? Not that I had any important on this computer so I may re-install everything from scratch if I can get the USB key with Linux Mate to be read at boot. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Able to boot Lubuntu from USB but not Pop_os! Or Zorin is 15 Posted: 28 Sep 2019 09:51 AM PDT I recently got an old MacBook pro 15" (mid 2009). The first distribution I tried to install was Pop_os!(19.04), but the USB wasn't recognized when I tried to boot. All I got was a blank screen, not even the HDD with Mac os x was showing after holding "option-key" on startup while the USB was in the computer. (Made the USB with etcher, formated to fat32 and it boots on my other pc) Zorin os 15, same problem.. cannot boot from the USB. I tried burning the image to a DVD, was able to boot from DVD and start installing. But the installation failed, got a message about possible corrupt installation media.(I checked that the sha256-sum was correct before burning the image to DVD) Then I tried Lubuntu 18.04.3 and 19.04, worked right away from USB. No problems installing. What could be the problem when Lubuntu works without any problems but other distributions don't? [link] [comments] |
Is there a good way to automate video creation with kdenlive (or other software)? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 06:33 AM PDT Basically I've got some documents already put together with text and pictures but I'm looking to convert these into videos as quickly as possible. Ideally they can be put out in a "slideshow" style video but I've looked into the options around trying to convert Impress files to video and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to automate that. Is there some easy way to automate something like this on linux? [link] [comments] |
Linux kubuntu 19.04 KDE Plasma 5.15 booting into grub terminal. Posted: 28 Sep 2019 06:12 AM PDT Rebooting PC causes it to boot into grub terminal. Only happens when rebooting not when i am truing it on and off regularly. Happend first time after setting up LVM partitions and installing Nvidia drivers. Does anyone know why this is happening or how to fix it? Hardware: CPU: Intel core i7-9700K Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX 2X kingston A2000 NVM3 m.2 SSD GPU: ASUS RTX 2070 Super [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu Studio not showing up in boot options Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:53 AM PDT So I have an old windows 8 laptop that I have been trying to get Linux running on, eventually I got a bootable USB working by enabling launch CSM in BIOS and I eventually tried to install it on a partition on my computer. However, when the computer starts there is no grub menu and when I open bios there are no boot options other than windows. When I try to reinstall Ubuntu Studio it tells me that it is already installed, as far as I can see, to the partition I expected. I have only seen the grub menu when I have the portable USB plugged in and I click on the first option in YUMI. In which case I can boot into Ubuntu Studio. This is my first time trying to install Linux on my computer. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Sep 2019 07:48 AM PDT Edit/tl;dr: Read /u/gordonmessmer's reply. I believe that addresses all my questions. I've got three SATA drives (two 1 TB and one 2 TB) and an 512 GB SSD that I want to dual boot Windows/Manjaro with. I'm toying with the idea of a raid with the three drives as a group storage space. I would keep all of Windows' "special" folders on it (My *, Program Files, etc), but would also use it as my main storage space for anything I can keep apart from /root and /home (I'm still fuzzy on the various directories needed by Linux and which you can keep off of your main OS drive, so that may play a part in this decision).
I plan to use raid 0 simply because I'm not looking for any redundancy. I typically game so I would like the fastest read/write, and I believe this is the best choice for that. All that being said, this brings up my first concern: I read that if one drive goes bad, the whole raid is lost. I'm curious as to how this applies to bad sectors; I've typically noticed signs of failure before the entire drive collapses, so I can usually pull off my important data that I need and replace the disk.
If the entire raid or single bad drive will be lost, I can opt for raid 1 because I am currently using just under 1 TB with both Windows and Manjaro, and will probably be cleaning up a lot of old, unplayed games.
And lastly,
(Just a side note: when I get my upgrade parts, I'll be swapping to the dual-boot whether raided or not. So if not, I'll probably raid the two 1 TB drives for one OS based off of the advice/opinions given here.) [link] [comments] |
How to avoid DNS Leaking when using OpenVPN Posted: 28 Sep 2019 12:41 AM PDT I'm trying to set up a my VPN using Free Software only. My VPN provider has a client which works perfect but it's not open source. I want to use only "libre or free" software as much as I can. So I decided to try to make this work. I'm using openvpn. Additionally I've set up a kill switch using UFW. I turned off IPv6. However I still leaking DNS. Is there a way to set Debian to only use the DNS of my VPN provider? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Sep 2019 08:04 AM PDT Quick question. Are there Linux distros that come prebuilt with media packages? Like could I install a Linux version that has PLEX/radaar and stuff like that already installed and ready for me to setup? I hope that makes sense [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Sep 2019 10:17 PM PDT I'm a student and i mostly use my laptop to search the web, Netflix and to do homework ( I don't do programming or anything of such nature), just a normal user. And I saw Linux and I liked the interface but Is it worth it? To switch Is it going to impact the way I interact with my laptop?? ( In a good or bad way). Is it going to make it slower?? Also what advantages could it possibly have for a normal user?? What Linux should I use?? There are A LOT. my lap specs are: Core i7(8gen) 8gigs of ram 256 GB ssd [link] [comments] |
Looking for a lightweight yet powerful distro for web development if thats even possible Posted: 28 Sep 2019 02:52 AM PDT So I have a decent laptop with some good specs. I run ubuntu 18.04 and it runs my computer hot sometimes and I assume its all the fancy gui and preinstalled features. Well I do like the modern look but its not a priority, I am looking for a lightweight (less resource hungry) yet easy to navigate through to install apps like gimp for web development and use php and mysql. I use these at the same time all together sometimes php , mysql and gimp so you can imagine its pretty resource demanding I thought every bit helps if I choose something more lightweight. One example of a lightweight yet not easily navigated distro is linux mint xfce I heard and read its hard to install software so something thats not like that but has the lightweight on resource consumption like it. Main use for my computer youtube researching/google web development having multiple applications open like gimp and software like php , mysql running all at the same time [link] [comments] |

Autoconnecting to wired network in KDE. Posted: 27 Sep 2019 10:25 PM PDT This worked perfect but since I added a openvpn profile. I have to manually press on the button connect. In order to connect to the wired network. Is there any way to make a bash script to do this for me after start or maybe changing a configuration... Thanks I use Debian 10.1 KDE in a desktop PC. NOTE: I SOLVED THIS. THIS WAY: This is a text file (executable). I added it to /home/username/.config/autostart-scripts/
(without the bullets) It's not Perfect but it works. I'm open for other ideas or solutions. [link] [comments] |
