    Simple Questions - September 28, 2019

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 05:08 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

My sub $500, 1080p gaming machine. ($488.82 to be exact)

    Posted: 27 Sep 2019 09:00 PM PDT

Hey guys! I just wanted to share my very first PC I've ever built, it was so much fun getting everything to work, and I just feel very proud of myself. Here's the parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pvBQzN

I scored a hella good deal on a refurbed RX580 NITRO+ from ebay and it's been working beautifully. I know I DEFINITELY need some more fans in the case but Im not doing anything too hardcore at the moment so it should be okay for now.

Here's a few more crappy lowlight pics: https://imgur.com/a/zZ79zoK/

My TimeSpy Score from the 3DMark Demo https://i.imgur.com/HAU2Uen.jpg

Edit: About dual channel ram, yes, I understand dual channel is better. No I do not have the money for a second stick at the moment. No, I should not have gotten 2x4Gb because it is pointless, when eventually I will upgrade to 2x8Gb and then 4x8Gb. This is the reasoning of having a single 1x8Gb stick. The purpose of this build was to be under $500 but with upgradeability in mind.

My turn for a thank you post- My journey in planning and slowly bringing to life my very first desktop for only $40 USD.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:42 PM PDT

As the title says, it is finally my turn to use that 'build complete' flair! My story is a long one, so buckle in. Before I begin, I'm sure there will be people who don't read this, so if you read nothing else, please just know how kind, friendly, and helpful the following people were to me: u/techmanjoe, u/goblinrum, u/torymid, u/l3ggomycraigo, u/Gibby1560, u/bobsmth93, u/Plainzwalker, u/SauceOverflow, as well as two kind people from facebook and my uncle.

Without any further ado, here goes:

This whole thing started several months ago when I found a bag of extremely outdated computer parts in a bag in a shed at a property my family owns, which we were visiting to fix up and get ready for renters. I cleaned them up, posted a pic, and asked the internet what they were.

I have always been pretty tech-savvy, but I have always used laptops and although I had always thought building my own computer would be fun, up until that point I didn't really have any motive or reason to build one. I began looking for the pieces I'd need to build something even semi-functional, and I decided then that I didn't want to have to worry about financing my newfound pet project, as I am/was a jobless teenager without any sort of disposable income.

I quickly learned about r/hardwareswap, and started to browse and post near endlessly, with little to no results. I'm not sure when exactly it happened, but I eventually stumbled upon a great deal on an ASUS P9D-V that came with a Xeon E3 1220 V3. Although I still didn't have much more than a motherboard and processor, I got excited and returned to my searching of HWS with a newfound passion. I started to find some great deals, even some local ones, until I eventually struck gold: "free".

I was ecstatic! I messaged the seller, and somehow it hadn't disappeared yet. This was the beginning of many amazing finds and generous people, willing to help me achieve my dream. I managed to find a nice case, PSU, high-end CPU cooler, some ram, and even a graphics card locally, entirely for free. I had someone offer me a whole computer, which came in handy several times in the future. I got everything put together and finally turned it on.

When I hit the power button, everything lit up, the fan started spinning, aaaaaannnndddd... Nothing! I tested every component bar the cooler and processor in the other computer, and they curiously all worked. I scoured the internet for any known incompatibilities, asked Reddit and everybody I could think of in my life if they had any ideas, but got nothing. I was devastated. I hung my head and shelved my project for a while, my enthusiasm gone.

A few months passed, and I decided it was time to see if I could do anything about my poor abandoned project. I decided to take one more look through the manual, and to my surprise, I found something! The board I was using required ECC Udimms, which I definitely hadn't been using. I looked around Reddit for some deals on sticks, and although there weren't many, I struck gold when I found 4x4gb sticks for a good price.

I waited anxiously for a few days, and they finally arrived. I stuck them in with the component I could confirm were working and something happened. I got beeps. I was able to figure out that the beep code I was getting meant a 'hardware failure', and through trial and error I found out that one of the ram slots on my motherboard was broken. I took that stick out and tried booting with the lowest end graphics card I had.

Lo and behold, it worked! I then shut it off, stuck the next best card in, and it worked again! At that point, I was nearly certain that my best card would work, so I plopped it into the socket and booted, only to get no video output. Dismayed, I googled common issues with the card and still got nothing. At that point, I knew that more than likely I had done something wrong, so I checked the card over to see if I had messed something up. At first glance, there didn't appear to be anything wrong with it, but I figured better safe than sorry, so I took the card out and put it back in, pressing a little more firmly this time. Much to my gratification, it worked! I now had a working system!

Thus far, I had been using an old laptop hard drive with a copy of windows, but once I had a working system, it was time to set up drives. My uncle (an employee of a large tech company) sent me a 120gb SSD to boot from and 2 6gb HDDs to set up in raid 1. Unfortunately, one of the 6tbs was damaged, but luckily the other still worked. I got windows installed on the SSD, and activated a copy of Win10 EDU given to me (for free) by my school. I confirmed everything was working, and then set to work making it look nice.

The case I have, though a nice one, unfortunately doesn't have a transparent side panel, so I will hopefully be making one myself soon. Until then, I will leave the side panel off, unless I'm told better. I intend to put in some RGB fans and LED strips, plus an I/O shield being shipped to me by ASUS. I also plan to eventually put in a better WiFi card and a sound card. Other than that, I will eventually be upgrading just about everything, starting with my graphics card, but until then I'm more than happy with what I have.

Below is a list of the parts I have in use, plus the people who gave them to me and what it cost. Please note that a name that was mentioned above not being on the list does not mean they didn't help just as much, if not more.

Looking to upgrade my existing pc. Is a 3900x overkill?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 12:43 PM PDT

    Hey all,

    I am currently running an:

    i7 4770k in a Asus z87Pro (thermaltake Floe Ring),

EVGA GTX 1080, (i know im bottlenecked lol)

    16 GB of DDR3 RAM,

2 TB HDD + 250 GB SATA SSD,

    750 W power supply.

I am looking to upgrade my processor and motherboard as well as purchase an M.2 SSD. The main use of my PC will be for GIS applications and video games.

    Questions:

    1. Ive been browsing cpubenchmark.net and it seems that the AMD R9 3900X has the best price/performance. Is it really worth it?

    2. Additionally, with regards to RAM does higher speed (MHz) make a significant difference in most applications?

    3. When purchasing an NVMe SSD is there anything that I should keep my eyes out for?

    4. What differentiates motherboards from one another? Does it just come down to # of ports/slots.

    5. Any recommendations for a multi monitor set up?

It has been a little while since I built my last PC so I value anyone's recommendations/advice.

    Thanks

I spent 15 minutes looking for M.2 standoffs

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 03:51 PM PDT

Only to find out they were already installed in the board. I legitimately thought they were in a accessory bag for my motherboard. Also came close to buying some too. But, let's be fair here, this is my first M.2 SSD and motherboard that supports it and I thought they were flush with the board itself.

    Any roasting I get, I deserve 🤣

    RAM Compatability

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:48 PM PDT

I just bought some RAM and then realised that it was built for Intel motherboard and CPU. I am going to return it and get a different RAM. but I don't know what RAM is compatible with my motherboard and CPU.

Motherboard: ASUS PRIME B450M-A CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600

It seems like almost all the RAM on the market is made for Intel Cpus and motherboards. On the packaging of my RAM it says: supports Intel.

Wifi antenna cables not connecting to wifi m.2 card

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 02:58 PM PDT

I bought a intel wifi m.2 card and what I thought were the recommended antennas and cables. When I tried to set it up the cables were not attaching to the card. It seems like they fit perfectly but do not click in or lock so they fall out right away. If I put a bead of hot glue will it work?

    First time gaming build

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:33 AM PDT

Hi, so I'm trying to put together a reasonably priced gaming rig. This'll be my first actual build so naturally there's a few things I'm not sure about.

I'm looking to put something together that that can run games, particularly Destiny 2, on mid to high settings at 60fps. I'm happy to spend around £500 - £650.

    Here's what I've got atm: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Woollyy27/saved/Xyxq3C

What do you guys think? Any feedback is appreciated.

Help! PC build keeps crashing while gaming

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:23 AM PDT

Issue is my rig should be able to handle new games with fairly high settings but PC is crashing or going to blue screen windows error playing games like PUBG, Ark, COD BO4, and TW:Three kingdoms. Is my motherboard and CPU too outdated? I know ark and pubg are notorious for crashing but it's happening with other games as well.

[QUESTION] 2060 vs RX 5700 (Non XT)?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 04:11 PM PDT

Basically title. I'm doing a 1080p 144hz build and the last thing im choosing is the GPU and am torn apart between these two. Also, I'm buying everything from Amazon.

From what I've read these two cards perform simillary so I don't know which to choose. Whichever card I decide in the end will be paired with a 2600 CPU and 16gb 3200mhz RAM, everything fitted in a h200 so lenght also matters.

I know the blower card 5700 is much cheaper (329.99$) than the cheapest 2060, but I also know that it's pretty bad (Single fan, also I don't like its design in general) so my next choice for a 5700 would be the sapphire pulse which comes with a double-fan design but costs 369.99$, so why pay that much when the cheapest double-fan design 2060 is the SC ultra gaming at 349.99? Or even at the same cost of the Sapphire pulse there is a triple fan 2060...

    • So bascially performance vs price, which to choose?

    • Or even if you have another CPU+GPU combo I'm open to suggestions.

    Thanks everyone!

How to get Windows 10 for a new Pc.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:58 PM PDT

So I was researching about builds as I hope to in the near future make a build myself but the only thing Im uncertain about how to get Windows installed. From Microsoft Windows 10 is like $100 and that would be way too much. My friend told me of keys that are around $20 but im not sure if those are sketchy or not. If anyone could please help I would greatly appreciate it.

Any reason to not go with Ryzen Gen 2/3 today?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:44 AM PDT

I'm looking at upgrading my PC, and I'm wondering dollar for dollar why go with Intel if Ryzen is doing so well? Mainly gaming, Escape from Tarkov, Borderlands 3, Apex Legends, Total War Rome 2, Three Kingdoms.

    CPU I'm looking to spend ~ + or - 400 . I am mainly looking for a dollar/dollar to performance comparison.

Deciding between two specific builds - Intel & Ryzen

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:08 PM PDT

I've got two mid-range gaming PCs in mind, and there is only about $70 difference between them.

    Ryzen Build

    Intel Build

Parts are pretty much identical except the CPU/Mobo, and neither would be overclocked.

Was generally wondering which would be better for playing older games like Skyrim, Kerbal Space Program, Fallout4 (all modded), and Cities Skylines.

    Was specifically wondering:

    1) If the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 would be sufficient given the reportedly good airflow in the Meshify case, plus the large number of fans. (I was going to go with the Noctua NH-D15, but I'm worried about space constraints in the Meshify C).

    2) If the CPU and GPU are a decent match.

    3) Does anything else look horribly off?

    4) I haven't build a new system in 15 years, though I'm good at figuring this stuff out. So any suggestions for making this as easy as possible?

    Thanks!

    Confused on PCIe 4.0

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 12:59 PM PDT

So I know 4.0 is faster than 3.0 but I'm not sure where to look in terms of hardware. Is PCIe 4.0 only for graphics cards or is it for SSDs as well? I want the fastest possible SSD for my build, and am currently looking to get the x570 Gigabyte Aorus Elite motherboard which has 2 PCIe 4.0 x16 slots. Are these slots only for graphics cards, or is there a NVME SSD that can fit into a x16 pin PCIe slot?

Need help building a cheap, tiny (desk sized!) computer that will handle dual/triple monitors and semi-intense archiving tasks handily!

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 03:11 PM PDT

Replace this text with your answer.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I'm incredibly frustrated by the performance of a year-old laptop (lenovo yoga 710 15 KIB) when using it for dual monitors and firefox. Here are the old specs (from amazon):

    • 7th Gen Intel Core i5-7200U (2.5GHz, 3M Cache, Turbo up to 3.10 GHz, Dual Core, Four Threads), 8 GB DDR4 memory, 256 GB Solid State Drive, Intel HD Graphics 620.
      • 15.6" Full HD 1920 x 1080 10-point multitouch screen; 360-degree flip-and-fold design; LED backlight.
      • Weighs 4.45 lbs. and measures 0.7" thin; Ultraportable design, omitting the DVD/CD drive for compact form factor. 4-cell lithium-polymer battery.
      • Fingerprint reader, HD webcam with two microphones; WiFi 802.11 ac; Bluetooth 4.1; USB 3.0; Headphone/microphone combo jack; 2 x JBL stereo speakers with Dolby Audio

I bought more RAM, 16GB but that really didn't seem to help. It helped a little bit. I've also tried deleting all sorts of shitty lenovo apps that came preinstalled and fucked with everything, but no luck. So I spent way too long on pcparts picker,

This will be used for: * Moving large-ass files (uncompressed TIFFs of books, sometimes in the multiple-gigabyte range), & also moving thousands of small files from/to harddrives. These tasks I usually run overnight. * Heavy XML/Linked Data work. If you want an idea of what it will be like, download "LC Subject Headings (LCSH) (SKOS/RDF only)" from here and open with Oxygen or Notepad++ * OCR software (FineReader, Adobe, etc) * Triple monitors -- especially if I can figure out how to use the old lenovo flipbook as a spare monitor--any tips? * idk lots of firefox tabs which shouldn't be an issue but apparently really is. also firefox-codebase software, like Zotero and Foxit.

I'd like to do these generally while running firefox in the foreground.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

None, but see notes on performance above

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Ideally, as low as I can get it! sub-500 if possible, but I'd really like to do sub-300. The point of this is to just get something that can handle firefox, text files, XML, etc.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please)..

Here are the builds I've entertained (stripping the lenovo of its RAM and possibly SSD. I feel like they might be grossly overpowered..but I don't know if I need a good CPU or a good RAM. I also I really want this to handle well under load--I know text and firefox shouldn't crush me this bad.

The below doesn't have RAM because I have DDR4 ram that I will scavenge from the lenovo. I also have the old RAM stick from the lenovo, so I currently have 16+8GB.

I also didn't include a SSD, but if we think it would be better to use an SSD over a microSD card, I'm open to it--just sometimes need a lot of space.

I also would really like it to be small enough to sit on a desk--I'm not too worried about sound, I'm deaf.

if it could fit under the monitor stand, that would be great. This is the desk I'm using currently, (14wx5.5hx8ishd), but no stress if it doesn't.

    Option 1

    Option 2

Replace this text with your answer.

Provide any additional details you wish below. I'd also really like a microSD card reader, I've used these to transfer files between computers quickly and not adversely affect my laptops storage space. But if it would be faster/more efficient to have an SSD then I'd happy to not use that.
