This Lenovo L340 Gaming, worth it or not? It has only one RAM slot but I have a 16GB stick that I'll swap in. Other than that, any thing else I should be considering. Anyone know the battery life? Also I can get the 1650 graphics card upgrade if I customize.

Can anybody tell me what this is? I found this out when I took apart my laptop (Dell Inspiron Gaming Laptop).

Can the CPU run at a clock speed lower than the base clock-speed?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:41 PM PDT

I'm definitely not an expert on computers and processors but i was wondering if the CPU on my laptop is supposed to run at a clock speed lower than the labeled base clock speed if it's idle or undertaking light tasks like browsing the web. For example i have a core-i7 8750H (base 2.2 GHz) but when it's idle or under light use it runs much lower than that at a low % of utilization. Is that normal?

I hate my 2019 Dell Precision 5530 (and going back to my late 2013 Macbook Pro)

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:30 PM PDT

I use my laptop for work and for home. Programming (Python, Django, React, Matlab, etc), watching movies in bed, docking it at my job, working from my fav. chair at home...

I use to work and do home stuff from my MacBook for years but i got sick of using my personnal laptop for work and decided to stop bringing it in so my employer had to buy me a laptop. They would only buy HP or Dell so i picked the Dell 5530. So many annoying things compared to my Macbook Pro:

    1. Thicker and heavier for mostly the same specs
    2. You can't open the lid having the laptop staying put, you have to use both hands to pry it open
    3. Trackpad is not as smooth and functionnal
    4. The power adaptor has a light that stays always on even when not plugged in. My MacBook only lights up when plugged in and let you know if it's charging or not
    5. Battery life is below 4 hours compared to 9 hours on my macbook (still has original battery) doing some programming with 2 VMs running.
    6. Fan runs 60% the time when i browse reddit.
    7. 16:9 aspect ratio is not as nice as the 16:10
    8. Keypad backlight does not stay on for more than 10 seconds without activity so if you are in the dark you have to press something to have it come back up. Dell told me to download and use a utility that i could never get to work. Looks like it was built for windows 3.1.
    9. The air intake is straight underneath instead of on the sides like the macbook so when you have the laptop on your LAP (or any soft surface) no air go in and the thing heats up real bad real quick.
    10. It won't go to sleep / hibernate properly. If i close the lid with 100% battery and unplug the laptop, it will be empty within 6-7 hours on windows and 9-10 hours on Ubuntu.
    11. The docking station (TB16) is not good. Had to have it replace and update firmware and software and bla bla bla and i often still have to restart my laptop and/or unplug it to have the TB16 recognize my peripherals.
    12. Did i say this 2019 laptop is heavier and bigger than my 2013 macbook for the same specs?
    13. The play pause back and forward buttons won't work with google play on Chrome (Windows or Ubuntu), works on my MacBook.

That's all i can think of for now but i'm sure i could come back in 10 minutes with 3+ cons.

The only pro is the quality of the colors on the 4K screen but that is it.

This Dell laptop feels like a computer was forced into a laptop body without much thoughts compared to my MacBook and i'm dissapointed of this 3000$ piece of hardware. When i'm ready to replace my Macbook Pro, it'll be another Macbook Pro just for the usability and quality of the package.

I had to put it out there since for the same specs and price point (16gb ram, 512G ssd, high dpi screen, 15 inches, i7 intel cpu, nvidia integrated gfx, etc for about 3000-3500 CAD) the quality and usability is SO different.

Maybe i'm missing something but i doubt it. Hope this helps someone.

    Edit: typos

HP ProBook G5 440 Fan Problems

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:03 PM PDT

Hey Guys, i've bought a HP ProBook 440 G5 last year, sadly the fan is quiet noisy even when under idle.

Furthermore the sound the fan makes is really annoying and high pitched.

I've sent my unit to HP to replace the fan as part of their warranty, but im quiet sure they wont fix the problem.

So... Anyone else got a ProBook with similar fan problems? Did you found a solution? If yes, tell me pls.

    Thx guys! :)

    How bright is 300 nits?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 12:57 PM PDT

I am looking to buy a laptop for programming and I have been finding some that I like. However, the ones in my price range have screens of 300 nits or less. I am hesitant to buy these because I am afraid the screens will not be bright enough. So back to my original question, how bright is 300 nits?

Looking to buy a new laptop

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 12:41 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy a new laptop but am on a budget. I don't want to spend over 700. I want the best/most powerful/portable cheap laptop. Any suggestions? I've already looked at the Asus ZenBook and all of those models. Also was interested in the Acer Swift 5 until I saw the price tag.

Lenovo Legion Y530: Wow, I didn't know it could be this bad. (RANT)

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 12:30 PM PDT

So, I purchased a Lenovo Legion Y530 yesterday and it really is a dreadful piece of junk.

    • The screen has a yellow inflamed/mold-like tint and gradients are basically non-existent, like 6-bit crayons.
    • The fan control is simple, if temps <50c turn off fans, if temps >=50c turn on fans resulting in fan jump scares every 1-2 minutes. Temps are at 55c? BOOM comes the fan, RPMs go lower as temp decreases to 52c, completely shuts off at 49c. Naturally temps rise back up in a minute and BOOM there you go again. NON-STOP, INDEFINITELY, LITERALLY.
    • I tried to play Gears 5 on it for only a few minutes and besides it sounding like a jet engine (which is OK if you wear headphones or have the volume at max) the keyboard is excessively hot making my hands feel like swollen (weird sensation) for hours thereafter.
    • You are lucky to get 2 hours battery on it while watching YouTube.

This company made an entire lineup of gaming notebooks with just a single RAM stick on the mobo, that's it, single-channel soldered non-expandable RAM for a GAMING laptop.

I can't return it because I'll be leaving for Uni on Thursday.

    Any suggestions?

Buying a laptop and choosing which one is good.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 08:07 AM PDT

    Acer Nitro 5 (2019) Lenovo L340 Asus Gaming x571
    i5-9300h i5-9300h i5-9300h
    Gtx 1650 Gtx 1650 Gtx 1650
    8gb Ram 8gb Ram 8gb Ram
    512 ssd 512 ssd 512 ssd

They are same prices, but I am looking for what will be the worth one, and which one has a good cooling system and performance. I am already giving thanks for your opinion :)

Is there a way to turn off the touch pad on an HP?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:48 AM PDT

When studying I often have two or three text books, note pads etc open for referencing while trying to also type on my HP laptop. The laptop usually is at arms length so I can see the other books. As I type the heels of my hands on occasion will come in contact with the laptop touch pad and my work goes all to hell. Is there a way to temporarily turn off the laptop touchpad?

    Budget gaming laptop

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:18 AM PDT

Gonna keep this short. My laptop is 9 years old and about to go out. It's an Acer Aspire. I'm in college and I need a laptop rather than a pc. However, I can't spend much over what a regular Acer Aspire would cost. My budget is $600. Suggestions? I should also mention I play MTG Arena (with difficulty because my laptop can barely handle it), and I'm super nostalgic so anything I get wouldn't necessarily need massive amounts of Processing power.

I'm looking for gaming laptop in the 700-800 dollar range cause I'm a poor student. What do you guys suggest? Is was thinking about just buying another z70 but it's a little underpowered I and can't really run newer or more graphically intense games.

Should I buy the asus zenbook pro dou

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 09:18 AM PDT

I have the Asus Zenbook 15 with i7, 16gb of ram and 512gb storage. I'm thinking about upgrading to the Asus Zenbook Pro Dou with same ram but a better processor and 1TB of storage - and of course the awesome screens. Should I do this kind of an upgrade? I'm a web & graphic designer, I don't do much of digital art and drawing and I have an iMac at my office. Does the Pro Dou good enough for traveling? I'm not a very serious traveler.

How can I learn the model number of the display of my laptop?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 08:23 AM PDT

I'd like to buy a color profile for the Legion Y530.

Since our profiles are tailored for each individual display model, this article and its respective profile package are meant for the Lenovo Legion Y530 with a 15.6-inch IPS panel featuring a Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080), and a model number LG LP156WF9-SPK1 (LGD0563).

Can’t decide between razor blade and Mag 15

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:34 AM PDT

I'm looking for a gaming laptop can last a day in college under low load. The best options I've found so far razor blade 15 with gtx 1660 ti 144 hz and mag15 with 1660ti ( but I heard it has a better battery), but I'm concerned with the keyboard being too loud in class. What are the pro and cons of each.
