I downloaded a ton of porn and now my computer is always at 100% disk usage

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:37 PM PDT

Hi I downloaded 80 GB of collective porn on uTorrent and I was enjoying it on my VR headset when suddenly my computer started to lag.

    Disk usage 100%.

I restarted my computer multiple times, uninstalling the porn didn't do anything.

3 year old, store bought laptop, having increasingly bigger disk usage issues. Is there a fix or is it time to but a new one?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 10:43 PM PDT

I have an Acer E15 aspire laptop, 1tb hard drive 4GB Ram, bought in and around 3 years ago. She has served me well, but she's always had disk usage issues. The disk would always be at 100% for like 5 -10 minutes after booting up every time, and then again after I turn the Wi-Fi on. But for the most part it's been fine, once it gets over its initial boot-up, disk usage is normal and it can run at least two to three different programs at the same time comfortably. But with the most recent Windows update it's taken a turn for the worse, not only is the disk usage continually jumping up to 100% and taking even longer to go back down to normal, the memory is consistently 65% to 75% for no discernible reason. I'm having issues getting it to just run YouTube properly at times. I already deactivated the SuperFetch program, because I thought that's what was causing the problem, but it appears not. The top program listed under memory right now is AVG service, but that's always been using memory and the memory was never in the 70s because of it. I'm well aware that store-bought laptops, especially the ones you get on the cheaper end (this was $350 - $400, if I'm not mistaken) aren't built to last a long period of time. So what I'm asking is, is there is a fix for this, is it worth the time and/or money to do it, or should I just go buy a new laptop?.

Cloning the right part of my PC when upgrading to an SSD

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 04:10 AM PDT

I am upgrading to an SSD. I have Macrium Reflect free, These are my options for cloning: https://imgur.com/a/4wZHHgF

I am not sure why my PC is so partioned. I dont think I need the recovery section, I dont even know what it is or remember setting it up. Is there any harm in not cloning it?

And I am not sure what the other parts of the partition are for. I am looking to keep this new set-up as clean and as simple as possible, so if it doesnt have a purpose, should I not clone it?

    Any thoughts?

Wanting to buy more RAM, what to buy?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:43 AM PDT

I'm looking to expand my PC RAM from 8 > 16GB and was wondering what the best RAM to buy is. My current PC specs are as follows:

    https://i.imgur.com/Lfe8KR3.png

I'm pretty sure I still have 2 more spaces for RAM sticks on my motherboard. What I am unsure about is whether I need the same brand/type/whatever or can I plug in any stick and it'll be as good? Any purchasing suggestions?

    Thanks!

Can anyone help me figure out why scvhost and searchUI are using ALL of my bandwidth?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:54 PM PDT

Here is a picture of my resource monitor:

I thought maybe my pc was the problem, maybe malware or something so I reformatted, reinstalled windows 10 and started fresh. I only have Discord, Fortnite, Borderlands 3, CSGO, and EFT installed on my PC. Nothing else. This is actually making me upset, as googling is not helping. All I can find is that I need to disable BITS but it's already disabled, it was never enabled to begin with. It makes it playing video games completely and entirely impossible. Ping spikes, disconnects, etc.

I don't know what else to do, and it's really frustrating. It makes it so bad that google/facebook/reddit won't even load correctly when it gets real bad. scvhost is spiking in to the 1,000,000 B/sec while I'm typing this post.

Desktop Windows Manager High GPU Usage

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 09:29 PM PDT

I recently noticed an issue when I booted up the beta for modern warfare a week or two ago. The game was running horribly compared to other, more intensive, games. It suffered from horrible frame drops and overall ran poorly. I checked task manager and found that the desktop windows manager was taking up over half of my GPU. I've never experienced this issue up until now and it pretty spontaneously occurred. I've tried all the steps and troubleshooting, my friend and I have scowerd up and down for a solution but none have worked so far. It's important to note that I even did a keep files reinstall of windows. I've tried lowering priority, I've tried updating drivers, reinstalling drivers, even tried creating a dump file for dwm.exe as someone said it had worked for them, but to no avail. We've been searching for a week now and found absolutely nothing that has worked. I only had discord running in the background to talk to said friend. I tried logging into another account on my PC and I had the game installed on my hard drive. This is not an isolated incident, it is happening regardless of me opening any games, and every game is affected by this.

My PC Specs: It may be important to note that it is an abs prebuilt that I bought in early 2018.

    CPU: Intel Core i7-7700K @ 4.20GHz
    Memory: 32GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

would it be a good idea to leave an iphone 5s in a warm place while it dries?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:20 AM PDT

my mom accidentally got her iphone wet. it was acting screwy for a day, but started working normally again, but i told her she should leave it off until it dries. she suggested the old rice trick, but i suggested she buy a bag of desiccant packets from amazon instead, because they'll probably work more effectively than rice and it's only $10 and my family stores foodstuffs like grains and beans so they could use some of them for food preservation, so we ordered them and they should be here tomorrow. i will recommend she leave the phone in the bag for about a week, just to be sure.

now my question is if the phone in the bag should be left somewhere room temperature, or if we should maybe leave it near the furnace to make it warm or possibly even leave it outside in the summer sun, because water evaporates better when it's warm or hot. she takes it with her outside during the summer so it's not like it's never gotten hot, it's a smartphone after all, they get warm and hot all the time, but would the addition of water inside make that problematic?

My pc isnt working and now my brothers pc is the same.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 08:28 PM PDT

    before i get into it here is the specs: my pc: win 10 / 500gb ssd / gtx 970 / intel i5 4690 3.50ghz / corsair ddr3 4gb x4 ram / thermaltake tr2 700w / msi z97 gaming 3 motherboard which i swapped for a brand new Asus micro atx b85m-g (thinking that was my problem)

    my brothers pc: win 10 / 500gb ssd / gtx 970 / intel i5 4690 3.50ghz / asus 8gb x2 ram / thermaltake tr2 700w / msi z97 gaming 3 motherboard

the events in order: Everything has been running ok for over 4 years until a week ago my pc shuts off suddenly, and would not turn on with the power button. i go from the outlet to the cable PSU thinking it died but on my last try it came on into a repair/recovory mode. first i tried starting normally and got to the login screen and after entering my pin it froze. on a solid color, after hard shutdown i tried again in safe mode and again it froze after entering my pin. as i was trying a 3rd time i smelled sometbing burning, so i shut it off and left it. i have not smelled any burning since. after that and until now my pc turns on the motherboard lights and all the fans work but nothing makes it to my monitor. and what i think is interesting is my power light on the tower is dimmer than before. My friend tries some stuff like removing the gpu and taking the CMOS battery(i think) out of the board and still nothing. and we conclude my motherboard has died. jump to today after getting the asus board and trying the same set of fixes with still no luck, so it must be the cpu. My brother, as our builds are very similar, lets me try his cpu in my new motherboard and if it works then i know for sure its my cpu, but it doesnt work and my pc is still dead. after returning his cpu to his pc, it acts the same way. full power to the internals, nothing on the monitor, but his tower light is not only dimmer its off entirely. im very stumped, my brother isnt happy, and im still not sure what is and is not broken anymore. ill be active for a bit if anyone has any ideas i can try that be great.

edit: text came out funny, guess that was from the note pad app i used to type this out

edit2: so i got what i hoped for and in my idiocy didnt set my brothers cpu in perfectly so his is good as usual =l

edit3: based on the way my brothers pc acted affer i didnt place tge cpu correctly i think. mine is just dead and i managed to confuse myself again. thanks for the help =)

Strange burnt smell from gaming laptop with occasional crashes/freezes

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 05:55 PM PDT

I have an Acer Predator Helios 300, and is about 6 months old. The smell started quite long ago(~4 months ago) but has been getting more and more pronounced, to the point that I can smell it from being about a metre away and making my room smell "strange" to others. Temps have always been ridiculous, and when gaming I always get 95C for the GPU and around 90C for the CPU(which I've downclocked and undervolted), and the computer freezes at very random but uncommon times. Also, for whatever reason, hardly enough air is exiting the fan exhaust relative to the amount that used to, even if the fans are on max speed, as if the fans were "turned away" from the exhaust.

What am I to make of this? Should I send it to the shop for a possible repair/cleanup? Also, does the amount of plastic that I've inhaled over the past few months pose a health risk?

The best 2-in-1 (convertible) full windows laptop for the price?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 08:22 PM PDT

I want a laptop that gives me the ability to take notes with a pen/stylus when needed and then use it as a regular laptop at other times. I also need at least 1TB of space in order to store files locally.

I love the Microsoft Surface Book but it's too expensive. I looked for refurbished ones and found one under $1000 with a 1TB HDD. Is that a good deal? Are there any ways to get a new one at a decent price? Black Friday?

Other than the Surface Book, any other better windows alternatives?

I found this on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KSPDM8V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_aNvDDbS9VY9BV

    Any good?

Need help repairing DashCam footage! Very Important!

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 02:15 AM PDT

On September 20th 2019, my dad was killed in a car accident. I've recently got the sd card from his android radio in his car which was destroyed. He had a dash cam hooked up to his android radio where the footage was dumped to an sd card. I just backed up his files and all the footage BUT the dash cam footage from the date of the accident is showing up as a "recording file". I am not able to view it or convert it with VLC, also I cannot upload it to any video repair site because of the file type. Does anybody have an idea of how I can go about recovering this footage? It will be a big help moving forward.

    (Properties of the file) https://imgur.com/a/xLM9GX4

Any and all help is greatly appreciated! My dad used to love browsing reddit.

    broken mute switch

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 01:48 AM PDT

Hey i broke off a small piece (visible in the back of the picture next to the mute button) from my mute button switch and now my mic is permanent muted. I tried switching it on with a toothpick but its really stuck so can i open the metal thing on top and switch it on from the inside?

Edit: I fixed it. Basically yes you can pry that metal thing open and when i was in the process of doing so the light turned green so i stopped and tested it and its all good. No soldering needed just a needle and some finger strength.

Windows 10 Reinstall, ASUS UX433FA, Driver Installation not doing anything

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 04:27 AM PDT

Heya, at some point my Wireless started to fail and the ASUS drivers ( https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ASUS-ZenBook-14-UX433FA/HelpDesk_Download/ ) were unhelpful. A lazy man with access to a fresh (legitimate) copy of Windows, I reinstalled, and then installed every driver available. Installing the drivers doesn't help or change anything at all.

The drivers for this laptop are bizarre. They're mostly executed via batch files. Only one version of the LAN driver is a setup.exe like every other driver on the planet.

Installing these drivers and rebooting does nothing. I have a pile of 'Unknown Device' in device manager. It's like a fresh desktop build before you install your Chipset/Motherboard driver.

Any thoughts on what to do would be appreciated.

Laptop shuts down when I close the lid

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 04:24 AM PDT

I have ASUS VivoBook Pro17 N705UN, and I have a weird problem with it, couldn't find the answers to it anywhere online. So my laptop sometimes shuts down when I close the lid. Of course, the settings in control panel (choose what closing the lid does) are all set to Sleep. But it still shuts down, and the weird thing is - there's no rule, my guess is it shuts down in about 30% of the times, and it's not dependent on whether it was plugged in or not, it's completely random. It's pretty frustrating 'cause I sometimes use notepad or stuff like that which doesn't have autosave, I close the lid and everything's gone. Did anyone else experience this?

    Wi fi connection randomly drops

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 04:13 AM PDT

So I ran a wlan report and this seems to be the main issue and I have no idea what it means:

Capability change on {58a8da59-b23a-4120-9b16-b319a9ad7561} (0x47008000000000 Family: V4 Capability: Internet ChangeReason: ActiveHttpProbeSucceeded)

Usually I have to make about 2-3 attempts to reconnect before I'm connected again. I looked at a lot of threads already but with no solution. I've installed he latest drivers, configured my router settings and even tried reinstalling network drivers. It's definitely not my isp since the rest of the devices that are connected to my network work fine. Does anyone have an idea of what the issue is or how to solve it?

    Pc Sound Problem

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 04:07 AM PDT

So whenever I'm in a call on discord etc, all my computer sounds play through my mic and I'm not sure how to stop this, this still persists even if I turn off the mic using a button on my headset or even unplug my entire headset. If I'm in a discord call there is always a green outline around my pfp, whether there is sound coming through or not, if that helps.
