Looking for a good value laptop. Posted: 29 Sep 2019 02:56 AM PDT Hello, I've been out of the laptop game for a long while and have had a cheap Asus (£300, $400) for a little over 3 years now. It has done its job and more. This time I'm looking for something a bit faster. I'm not too concerned about the OS since I'll install a Linux dist anyway. I would mention no Apple, but my budget restriction does that. One thing I really like about my current laptop are the function keys for turning off the screen, dimming, etc. Laptop usage: mainly browsing, dual screen with a video such as Netflix. Budget hopefully under $1000 and even lower. I'll travel with it a lot so there's always a risk. Ideally I can password protect the HDD and Bios. I treat my data as more valuable than the hardware and as such I'd rather not delve into dodgy Chinese brands. Battery life not very important at all, likewise for weight. Screen size 15.6 inch or similar. I don't wish to run any demanding game. Maybe things like Age of Mythology. Not a must. I'm happy if it can handle video and browsing (simultaneously) smoothly. Edit: warranty over one 1 year would be a huge bonus. Not sure how common these are for laptops though. [link] [comments] |
Lenovo Legion Y530: Wow, I didn't know it could be this bad. (RANT) Posted: 28 Sep 2019 12:29 PM PDT So, I purchased a Lenovo Legion Y530 yesterday and it really is a dreadful piece of junk.
This company made an entire lineup of gaming notebooks with just a single RAM stick on the mobo, that's it, single-channel soldered non-expandable RAM for a GAMING laptop. I can't return it because I'll be leaving for Uni on Thursday. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |

What’s a good laptop for photo/video editing? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:02 PM PDT Can anyone recommend a laptop that is good for photo editing/photo editing? I was going to get a MacBook Pro but the Touch Bar looks like it would be irritating to use. I live in Australia. [link] [comments] |
What's so bad about Acer laptops? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 08:37 PM PDT I honestly don't get why it's so hated. I've had mine for three years and it works great after adding an SSD and more ram. I often see Acers being priced lower than other brands for the same specs. Why? [link] [comments] |
Can decide between razor blade 15 1660 to or 2060. Posted: 29 Sep 2019 02:04 AM PDT I need help bois. Can't decide between either. The 1660ti is cheaper but some people say that it runs hotter than the etc version. And also how is the battery life? Is it enough for a day in college? Should I buy through razor website or amazon? Thank you for helping [link] [comments] |
Laptop for university / light gaming Posted: 29 Sep 2019 01:58 AM PDT Hello, my niece asked me to find her a laptop for about 600-700 €. She plays some games like The Sims 3 and The Sims 4 and it is her first year in university (computer science). Usually I try to find three different laptops (portability, performance and something in between):
Are these good choices? Any other recommendations? Thank you for your help! [link] [comments] |
Best light and cheap ultrabook Posted: 29 Sep 2019 01:47 AM PDT I'm looking for a light ultrabook like a surface pro or LG gram. An i5/i7 processor with integrated or low-end GPU. Roughly 13-15 inch screen and as light as possible. Also with half-decent battery life. It will be used for computer science at university as well as light gaming. Must be available in Australia. What would you guys recommend as the best cheap laptop fitting these specs? Edit: Windows is preferred OS, [link] [comments] |
Average laptop for student, Able to play most games (500-700 Brunei Dollars) (Brunei Darussalam) Posted: 28 Sep 2019 09:59 PM PDT
I just need a laptop not too bulky like gameing laptops just medium sized or light. But i dont understand what you need more vram/ or better GPU so just help me on that, something enough for Medium settings with 60 or 30 fps minimun no lower. Even Cpu i dont know what is good ENOUGH just the minimum or at least something that gives the most bang for your money. Battery as long as it lasts most of the day even with extra apps TLDR : A laptop enough for a student and work and specs(GPU CPU) enough for most games with battery that lasts at least most of the day [link] [comments] |

Programming and video editing ultrabook. $1000-$3000 (US) Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:26 AM PDT Looking to purchase a laptop to replace my aging w530. I love the keyboard, the screen is the right size, but it's so huge and bulky (esp. the power supply) and gulps down power that it's deterring me from using it when I should. What I want to upgrade to: * Long battery life * Suitable for travel (light, can use on planes) * Great keyboard * As large of a screen as possible given the above factors * USB-C charging and at least two ports Secondary: * Linux support * OLED * Strong processor (at least as good as my w530) * Can do video editing (just hobby level) * 2-in-1 * Don't want spyware, or at least would prefer US spyware Tertiary: * Ice Lake * WWAN in the unit I'm assuming I'll have to compromise on cost - might be expensive. Things I don't know: * Particular size thresholds for travel * Intended target audience of products This seemed to be a pretty common set of features for ultra lols, so I began looking for narrowing factors. The spyware thing pushed me towards HP and Dell, then I tie broke on Linux compatibility and focused my efforts there. At one point I really wanted OLED, but when I found out only 15" panels existed then I abandoned it in favor of compactness. I picked up a new Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1. That seems to have most of what I asked for. However: * I'm unsure about the keyboard. It is kinda satisfying to type, but it didn't stack up very well against, say, the Lenovo X1 Yoga. * Some of the keys on the keyboard and the touchpad occasionally stick * There's no slot for a pen, and I dislike the feel of the keys just being there in the tablet mode It seems like the XPS 13, X1 Yoga, C940 14", or X1 Carbon might be what I'm looking for. However, I figured it might be good to ask here. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Sep 2019 07:54 PM PDT Dont know much about laptops but just the basic specs. •1060ti •16gb ram •lots of storage space •Intel core 7 Feel free to recommend me anything better than the specs I listed, I dont know if those specs are what you would expect from a 1200$ laptop. Laptop for college (Autocad + solid works) (EU) Posted: 29 Sep 2019 02:56 AM PDT As the title says, I'm looking for a laptop under €650 maximum. Looking for a laptop within the 5-600 euro range for programming. In Italy. Posted: 29 Sep 2019 02:44 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** €500-600. Italy. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I prefer the best specifications for the money. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not important. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** I don't mind. I will format it anyways :D * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15.6". * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Just enough to program with VS Code and use Chrome without slowing down. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I don't need it to run any games. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** A good keyboard would be nice. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I've tried this laptop here Acer Aspire 5 (with an i3-8145U) but it was really slow with multi-tasking and launching any program, especially Chrome. I want to thank you in advance for your time :) [link] [comments] |
Looking for a laptop that will be docked most of the time with occasional outings. Posted: 28 Sep 2019 07:08 PM PDT Hi everyone. My current laptop succumbed to a fan issue and I'm now forced to get a new laptop as a replacement. I'm looking to get a laptop for everyday BS, not much heavy lifting or gaming. I have a docking station at home and I keep my laptop connected there most of the time. Occasionally I'll take it out somewhere, which is why I like the flexibility of having a laptop instead of just getting a desktop PC. As such, I don't really care much about screen size or battery life. I also don't want to splurge because I splurged with my last one and it pooped out on me in 2 years. Anyway, here is my form:
Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Is acer aspire e15 still worth buy in 2019-2020? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 09:06 PM PDT I'm planning to buy Acer aspire E15 specifically the model E5-576G-5762. The specs of this laptop are: Core I5 - 8Th gen, 256ssd, dedicated graphics of Nvidia's MX 150 2gb, 8 gigs of DDR3 ram, 15.6 in 1080p display. I'll mostly use this laptop for programming, web surfing stuffs and probably for light gaming. For this budget, I found out that this laptop could be beast. Plus it has massive battery life of 8hrs+. Backlit keyboard is also available which will surely help me during the nighttime programming sessions. But I'm worried about the cons of this laptop, other reviewers are mentioning. They all hung up on dim display and it's weight(which is almost 5 pound). Weight isn't an issue for me. My previous laptop was almost 5 pound, but I'm worried about the dim display. I found out it had about 227 nits. Is it really not that bright? I'll be using it for indoor purpose and I hope it's bright enough to watch movies, play games. People keep complaining about Acer's laptop. I've been using Acer aspire since 6 years and it's still ok for programming web browsing etc. [link] [comments] |
