Problems with installing Linux as a 2nd OS ... Posted: 20 Aug 2019 12:50 AM PDT Hey, I've wanted to install Linux as a 2nd OS because of a school project. I'm using an Acer Aspire 5 A515-52G with Windows 10 64 Bit. I've shrunk some of my disk space in windows to get some unassigned space for linux. I already disabled Secure Boot in the BIOS and I'm on UEFI (Legacy is somehow not available with this laptop...). I Installed Rufus and downloaded the Linux Mint ISO. I started Linux Live from the USB and it works fine. When I click on "Install Linux" on the Linux Desktop it takes me trough the Setup, but at some point i get an error (I'll add an Imgur Pic). It just doesn't show me any partitions and I also don't get the "how do you wanna install it" (next to windows, erase, ... this stuff) dialog. Imgur Pic: Strange thing is that on another Laptop (Thinkpad T460) the installation would work in theory (didnt get the error and could click on install if i wanted to. i can't do it cause it's my work laptop tho). I just checked this to make sure the ISO or Stick isn't faulty. Based on that i believe it has something to do with the laptop (already bothered me that i somehow cant switch to legacy and use stuff like YUMI or so...). Maybe it has something to do with that? Anyone who can tell me what to do? Help is appreciated. Thanks in advance :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Aug 2019 11:11 AM PDT Today i decided to install linux over windows but i've found out that i don't really know which distro i'd want to use so i'd like to hear which distro should i use, i mainly use windows for studying, programming , video editing and every now and then gaming. I mainly considered using Manjaro, Deepin, elementaryOS or Linux Mint [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Aug 2019 12:13 PM PDT First problem: When trying to connect to a network, networkmanager says: "(1) Not authorized to control networking". I already tried re-adding me to the network group, but no luck. Second problem: My T450 has two batteries, one is internal, the other is external. The internal battery is at 25% and refuses to charge at all, while the external battery charges very, very slowly. Doing tlp fullcharge doesn't seem to help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Aug 2019 02:33 PM PDT Hi, Just started using dwm, but I have a lot of problem, hopefully I will be able to receive some help here, here are some of the problems/questions I have: -why is the command to patch what it is, what exactly does it mean? -what do patches exactly do? do they modify some of the already existing configuration files? if yes, what exactly files do they modify? (bc I was unable to spot any modifications in my config.h file) -how do I revert a patch? -can I delete a patch file after I've patched it? (this sort of will be answered if question 2 will be answered) -where can I find the default keybindings and shortcuts? -how can I create keybindings and shortcuts? -how can I achieve the "i3wm" layout, i.e. all windows just turn into columns, no master/slave stuff (I find it a lot more convenient that way) what patch to I need to patch to get that? -why could my autostart patch now work? (I patched it, created the .dwm folder, created a autostart.sh file in it, in which I just placed "feh --bg-fill /path/to/wallpaper" to basically get wallpaper, but it doesn't work for some reason...) thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
What does the depmod command do? Posted: 20 Aug 2019 01:49 PM PDT Virtualbox wasn't working due to lost kernel modules, so I installed the modules. Apparently the root cause was something about "System.map" not being found in the /usr/src/linux directory (I checked /boot and it was there), and to fix it, you needed to do something with depmod. I found the full command on a forum (I think it was an Arch forum, I use Gentoo), sudo depmod -a. I ran that and then ran the module probe (modprobe) command to load the vboxdrv module. However, I am wondering what that command was doing when it fixed the problem. [link] [comments] |
How about install a Linux distro in my External HDD USB 3.0? Posted: 20 Aug 2019 01:24 PM PDT Hey everyone. I've been thinking about to install a linux distro in my external HDD, so I'll be able to run my Linux Distro on any PC only by running from USB, but the main idea is run it from my main Desktop without the dependency of create any VM. Is an interesting way to have a Linux machine as an alternative machine? Currently I'm running Windows (buuu you can blame me if you want, I'll understand) for a few specific projects, but I don't want to create any partition, GRUB, etc. etc... (I did it a few years ago... but at the end when I want to format Windows... I get rid of the Linux partition, for some reason) Instead of run a Live USB distro, just to keep some backup things, some average use case (webpages... code practice, run little projects, learn new tools like docker without make a mess in my desktop) and those things, only running it from USB HDD Specs: Toshiba 1TB Canvio Basics 5400rpm USB 3.0 (3.1 following the new naming convention, is weird) . Do you think it should be enough in terms of speed to read/write? Or it would kill my HDD in matter of weeks. No distro preference, at the beginning the use probably will be for running some light text editor (VS Code, Atom, VIM. ...) with git + store some personal info or even test different distros til decide the winner. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!! [link] [comments] |
How to move music (mp3) from iPod to linux (KDE)? Posted: 20 Aug 2019 01:16 PM PDT I was wondering if there is a painless and simple way to take all my music from an iPod and transfer it to my linux (KDE distro)? thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Aug 2019 12:59 PM PDT I want to create a twist in my hosts.deny that will send a message that will not make china's censors happy. My current message is ": twist /bin/echo REMEMBER TIENANMEN SQUARE 1989 REMEMBER THE MURDERED" Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for ssh. I've tried putting a message in the ssh_config but so far I have not been able to get it working. My VM is running Ubuntu 18.04. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Steam doesn't start on Bionicpup Posted: 20 Aug 2019 05:48 AM PDT I'm running 64-bit Bionicpup 8.0 off a USB 3.0 pendrive, with 2GB persistence (1GB free), savefile is LUKS-encrypted. 32bit_compatibility_bionicpup64.sfs is loaded. My PC is fairly modern, 16GB RAM, no issues running modern games on Windows or Ubuntu full installation. I installed Steam from Quickpet and ran it from Fun>Steam, it asked me to confirm Steam terms and conditions but the update window never appeared. Now Fun>Steam does nothing at all. How can I check what's wrong? [link] [comments] |

Full capacity of internal laptop hard disk not displayed when used with a hard disk enclosure Posted: 20 Aug 2019 07:16 AM PDT Hello, I am using Linux Mint 19.2 on my new laptop. My previous laptop's motherboard went haywire and I want to transfer the data in the hard disk of my previous laptop to that of my new laptop. Now, I have just bought a SATA external hard drive enclosure and fit my old internal laptop HDD, with a capacity of 500 GB, into the enclosure. However, when I now connect the enclosure to my new laptop, while the hard disk is detected it shows a capacity of mere 256 MB with a few files such as Grub, memtest86.elf etc. What is this all about? Where are my old files? I am new to Linux and have no idea on how to proceed. This is what lsblk says: [link] [comments] |
Xubuntu install problems (might have messed because of partitions, any way to save my laptop?) Posted: 20 Aug 2019 02:08 AM PDT Hello, total noob, and in well over my head. If anyone can help or point me the right way I'd be extremely grateful. Probably all of this is my fault for not doing things properly from the start, but too late now to do anything except try and fix this (and do better next time). Sorry for the long post but I am not sure what details are important. Got an Odys Winbook 13 from a relative who did not need it anymore, Windows was running slow and I already have a good laptop, decided to put Xubuntu on this to give it a new life and learn how to use Linux. I made the mistake of not checking what partitions were on it, if any, just made a bootable Xubuntu USB with Rufus following a tutorial, plugged it in, and went for it (not dual boot, I simply installed Xubuntu, there's no Windows on there any more). Everything seemed to work, Xubuntu runs, I installed a couple things, joy. Computer randomly freezes, sometimes without seeming cause, and always when the software updater is running. On launch, I get this message:
I found some advice about this, follow it, let it fix the problem, all seems fine but same problems persist over a month. After this happens a few times, yesterday I decide to clear it all, and reinstall Xubuntu from scratch, and see if this might solve it. I make a new USB just to be sure, and decide to follow a tutorial( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmqL81w20KE). This tutorial explains how to set partitons, so I try that. I create a 1024MB /boot partition, a 4GB swap partition, and leave everything else for / (about 57MB). I press Continue, and on the timezone selection screen I get this error:
I chose quit, turned the machine off, and went to work, where I am now, weeping about my ineptitude. Does anyone have ELI5 advice on how to fix this? Google tells me that error could mean my disk is breaking/broken, or that I have messed partitions (which I guess I have). Incidentally, I notice the disk is called dev/sda in most tutorials I find, while on my machine it is called dev/mmcblk1 can anyone explain why? Thanks, it's hard to be a noob sometimes, the real problem is not knowing what you do not know, and just feeling super lost. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Aug 2019 07:00 AM PDT Hello Linux Gents and Ladies. I'm very new to this Linux world and just started using Ubuntu LTS 19.04.2 and so far I like it. Trying to get away from the Win10 platform (which is great in it's own right). Only thing I'm not able to sort out is my mouse and keyboard. Especially the Logitech MX S2 mouse. Is there any way to enable me to use the side buttons and adjust the speed? I use the side thumb buttons for zoom in and out (I'm visually impaired). Windows it's possible to use the Logitech Options download to adjust programmability of mouse and keyboard keys. I'm using the GNOME Tweaks but not finding any solved questions on this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance 👍🏼 [link] [comments] |
I need a daily Popup Notification for Ubuntu Posted: 20 Aug 2019 10:42 AM PDT I would like a persistent (won't go away until I dismiss it) ' standalone' simple desktop notification that will pop up at a specific time daily. I see a popup notification on my main menu but it will only allow me to move the position or color. Many apps trigger this type of notification (i.e; Thunderbird, printer, etc) . A simple calendar or reminder app? Anyone? I use UbuntuMATE 18.04LTS. [link] [comments] |

Run two different instances of Timeshift - one for root snapshot, one for home snapshot Posted: 20 Aug 2019 06:16 AM PDT I'm on Arch Linux. Currently, I have Timeshift running to back up system files, and Back In Time running to back up my home directory. It's working alright, however I greatly prefer Timeshift, from a UI standpoint and a functionality standpoint (allows daily/weekly/monthly backups, backups don't run at a fixed time, etc). However, I would also like to keep my system and home backups separate. This would mean running two different instances of timeshift, each with their own Cronie timers, and each snapshotting different folders to different places on different schedules. Is this possible in any way? [link] [comments] |
Still skeptical about a good distro. Posted: 20 Aug 2019 09:40 AM PDT First i used pop os, then i saw manjaro to be really popular so i migrated to manjaro thinking I'd be satisfied, still i am having doubts. Suggest!? please. [link] [comments] |

Fedora 30 Steam keyboard doesn't work in game Posted: 20 Aug 2019 09:19 AM PDT Hi, I recently switched to Fedora 30 as my first Linux distro. When I downloaded Steam to play Crusader Kings 2 to my regret I found that my keyboard doesn't in game. What I mean that in game, no input seems to go anywhere. I can alt tab out of the game and even shift tab to bring up the Steam menu, but I can't, for example, go to an external browser in game (nor use game's hotkeys) because I can't give input to the search engine. Any tips? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Aug 2019 08:29 AM PDT I use Opensuse TW. This is the first time something that I have a big problem After a zypper dup yesterday (I remember that it upgraded bumblebee and bbswitch) I can't login. I tried to boot from a snapshot that I did 3 days ago and this problem persists. Does someone knows what could be wrong? What I tried: Login on icewm, Wayland, uninstall bbswitch, bumblebee, etc... Even when I try to rollback to previous snapshots it wont work. [link] [comments] |
