Just a question out of curiosity Posted: 19 Aug 2019 08:49 AM PDT Like each android phone had a skin put on by companies, why haven't any major companies tried to develop their own distro for PC/lap ? Or why haven't any other company other than canonical tried to use linux and get a share of the desktop OS market ? They could develop something like mint or ubuntu, put it in a lap/PC & give support like canonical does. When I googled, it showed canonical had less than 500 employees. Surely there are companies who can employ a bigger workforce & maintain a distro. And if it's an openly commercial/proprietary company, they could do stuff like preinstall apps like amazon, WPS, spotify etc. Normal users who doesn't care much about privacy & just wants a cheaper windows alternative wouldn't care & could easily transition into something like that. I remember seeing some lap models with DOS/ubuntu option instead of windows when people looked for a discount. I watched this video, and was thinking why big Chinese companies aren't trying to compete with Mac or windows in the desktop OS market. I mean they are at the forefront of creating alternatives & bootlegging. Have this been tried before ? Why are big companies hesitant ? [link] [comments] |
I tried to fix my TF2 and fucked Swap. Whoops. Posted: 19 Aug 2019 05:56 AM PDT While trying to fix some issues in a game, I came across a post in which one player had success with the same issue by disabling swap. I did some poking around (without actually checking what swap was) and then did swapoff -a all, and, because of another post I saw, sudo sed -i.bak '/ swap / s/(.*)$/#\1/g' /etc/fstab Every time I boot, I'm now prompted with a password entry for the swap drive, and general usage seems a bit more sluggish (which could just be placebo). I did some other shit with changing the swappiness to 10 somewhere in an attempt to fix it, but I've now probably fucked it worse. I'm on Pop!_OS. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 19 Aug 2019 11:47 AM PDT I don't know how to look into this, I suspect uuids. here's some details: I have a dual-boot uefi windows and solus, I backed up the solus partition using clonezilla to another disk, changed the backup fstab and uefi options to match the backup partition uuid and be able to boot from it, opened gparted changed original disk uuid because they were the same and I figured it was something I should do, then tried to delete partition then format to unformatted partition. Gparted got to work, showed all it steps, ended without showing errors, but everything remained the same. booted a live usb, same thing happened exactly. Can anyone please tell me what's going on? Posted: 19 Aug 2019 11:43 AM PDT Ubuntu:Instructions: https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-how-to-verify-ubuntu and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VerifyIsoHowto Linux Mint: linuxmint-19.2-cinnamon-64bit.isoInstruction: https://linuxmint.com/verify.php My results were slightly different with instructions that I found online. Notice the result for All files were downloaded and verified on a single system and from a single source. Do I have to download the checksums and signatures on a different system from a different source, and then check the images? I did google the keys and fingerprints and they seem to be valid. I added a line space between each command to make these easier to read. [link] [comments] |
Switching to Linux as daily driver Posted: 19 Aug 2019 10:48 AM PDT Looking to start using Linux over Windows 10 as my main OS. I have about 600gb open to create a new linux partition. I know there's plenty of videos on how to do this but Before I jump into this little project what are some things that may be helpful to know before I get started? Like for ex. How can I migrate all of my files and folders and stuff from Windows over to Linux? Is it possible. Best Linux distro for daily use? Any generic helpful tidbits welcome! Thanks [link] [comments] |

Posted: 19 Aug 2019 09:45 AM PDT Edit2: SOLVED. Had to install pulseaudio and alsa-utils and run alsactl init. Hi, someone knows an easy way to setup sound on a fresh debian with i3 (not even pulseaudio installed)? The official documentation is not really helpful here. I don't care about the number of packages I have to install, the only thing I want is the least amount of manual configuration that is possible. Hope someone can help... Recover deleted luks encrypted partition Posted: 19 Aug 2019 01:27 PM PDT I accidentally formatted my entire 1.5 TB hard drive in an attempt to create backup of my original windows(curse you Windows).I have to cope with Windows cuz i just bought a new laptop. Anyways,i ran the following data recovery softwares in Windows:
None of these detected my 200GB dm-crypt LUKS encrypted partition.Yeah i was running linux as my base machine before buying new laptop.Other partitions of file system Ext4 and NTFS are fully recovered using these softwares. Any ideas on how to recover the entire LUKS partition? Now i'm totally lost and my data is too important to lose. [link] [comments] |
Something is changing my file attributes Posted: 19 Aug 2019 09:03 AM PDT From time to time my desktop environment freezes and and after I reboot I noticed that some files can't be opened. Posted: 19 Aug 2019 12:45 PM PDT Don't really know where else to ask this I have a laptop dual booted with windows 10 and ubuntu. Over on the windows 10 side, I installed throttlestop to undervolt my cpu. Will my undervolt stay active when I reboot into ubuntu or should I undervolt in ubuntu as well? I don't want to undervolt twice (if that makes sense). [link] [comments] |

Buying Old Desktop to Give it a whirl Posted: 19 Aug 2019 11:20 AM PDT Going to buy an old desktop off of eBay and try Linux. I'm trying to get into Cybersecurity and I know Linux is crucial to be familiar with. I think I know what to do but pls correct me if I'm wrong: Once I get the desktop, I need to create a USB thumb drive and boot from that yes? Or are there other options? I'm not too keen on having someone else's hard drive and I believe it gets wiped when I boot certain distros? If not, can I have an external HDD and still have everything run ok with a USB drive boot? Thanks. Sorry 4 noob [link] [comments] |

Kubuntu Boots directly to black screen after install. Posted: 19 Aug 2019 07:30 AM PDT Hello after getting tired of windows 10 constant shit I decided to give Linux a try so after researching a little Kubuntu was the distro i liked the most and so I installed it but the problem is that after installation my pc boots directly to a black screen with a blinking underscore(_), I can perfectly run it using the "try kubuntu" option on the usb stick that i used for installation (thats how i am using my pc now) but for some reason it doesn't work here, I already did some search and one of the common answers is to get to the grub menu and turn on "nomodeset" but the problem is that as i said it boots directly to the blinking underscore after the bios (i can enter to the bios of course thats how i choose to boot from the usb), i already tried pressing right shift or escape and nothing. Software: Kubuntu 19.04 Hardware: Intel hd graphics Intel pentium g630 Ssd kingston a400 Thanks you. [link] [comments] |

What DE do you recommend that has fractional scaling for a laptop? Posted: 19 Aug 2019 04:25 AM PDT This is frustrating as I'm looking to install Linux on a laptop with not even a super hidpi screen (1080); but fonts, mouses, and other stuff are really tiny and it would do well if there was an option to scale everything. What DE (preferably one that has an ubuntu derivative) offers that? I looked at Mate, Cinammon...but none do. I know KDE does, but I want some other options. Thanks [link] [comments] |
