getting better quality out of PulseAudio? Posted: 30 Aug 2019 07:57 PM PDT hello, all! i'm kind of an audiophile and i'm used to the realtek quality that windows used to give me. the only pulse configs i've changed is tsched=0 to make sure Discord would stop hurting my ears during calls. i've been thinking of following this guide but i have no clue if it's good advice or not. Is there any way to get Bang & Olufsen drivers on pop os? Posted: 31 Aug 2019 01:56 PM PDT So I finally got pop os on my hp envy 13 and I've got it mostly set up but I realized that only the 2 bottom facing speakers work, not the ones that say Bang & Olufsen that fire upwards. So is there any way to get them to work? Oh also, is there any way for me to get my fingerprint scanner to work on there? [link] [comments] |
I want to print XPS files from Linux with CUPS - is this possible? Posted: 31 Aug 2019 01:55 PM PDT I have a specialist printer with drivers only for windows which uses the XPS drivers. There are no linux solutions provided by the manufacturer. Is it possible to print from Linux somehow? [link] [comments] |

Linux for a laptop - complete noob Posted: 31 Aug 2019 01:09 PM PDT Microsoft has screwed me over again. I may not be able to do my work without MS Word (though I am trying out LibreOffice now), but I at least want to dual boot a laptop with some Linux os. Ideas? I may try to make the other laptop exclusively Linux something. I have read that most Linux distros are more private than Windows10 (I am pretty sure one of my security programs viewed it as spyware--accurately, I think--and screwed up a laptop), which is a rather low bar. I am attracted to Solus, or Mint Cinnamon, but I know too little. Ready to stop yelling F U at machines for a while. I thought this might be a good place for recommendations. Thanks for any ideas. Is it possible to encrypt arch installation after the install process? Posted: 31 Aug 2019 12:21 PM PDT Hi, I live in a country where there's a potential for my computer to be confiscated for my activity, and I have a lot of stuff there that I would rather not have anyone have access. I know that disk encryption is usually done during the installation process, but I didn't do it while installing arch. What are my possibilities for encryption after the fact? And how secure are those methods? thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Aug 2019 11:17 AM PDT Hi, I currently have a 24 inch 75 hz 1080p monitor. If I get a second one, which will be 27 inch 1440p 120 hz, will it be possible to have them work together? What are some potential problems I can encounter? Does anyone have any experience with a similar setup? thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
i3+polybar question regarding app menu Posted: 31 Aug 2019 11:13 AM PDT Is there anyway to implement a dropdown application menu like whisker. I know i3 uses dmenu by default but rofi/dmenu are only good if you remember the application name but it doesn't really work well for apps you rarely use and cant recall the name off the top of your head or you have to manually go through the entire run/drun menu. alternatively, anyway to organize drun into category "folders"? How can I lower monitor refresh rate on i3 wm? Posted: 31 Aug 2019 11:09 AM PDT Hi, For some specific testing purposes I need to lower my monitor refresh rate from 100 down to 75 Hz. Is this possible to do on x.org? What would be the steps to do this on i3-gaps? (i3 user guide doesn't really mention refresh rate anywhere ...) thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
A large list of issues I've been having with Manjaro KDE, help? Posted: 31 Aug 2019 10:41 AM PDT
My original install was Manjaro XFCE, I installed the Plasma desktop over it and after several reinstalls it still has the same nagging bugs. I don't want to reinstall my entire OS just using the KDE Manjaro ISO since I have files, apps, etc. on here I want to keep. [link] [comments] |
I just installed Lubuntu on a 2012 Acer One subnotebook worth $30. Posted: 30 Aug 2019 09:40 PM PDT It worked. It even found the Atheros wifi drivers. Everything just works. It's a little slow, but not unbearably slow. I plan on working in the terminal as much as possible. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2019 10:37 AM PDT Hi, I'm using app called cryptomator very often (for encrypting folders). I want to automate decrypting of my folders with a script, that will ask me for all of the passwords and decrypt folders pasting passwords from variables. The problem is, that cryptomator doesn't have any serious cli interface. The one is here, but it is not supporting FUSE type of folders, and this is the only way I'm encrypting my folders. My question is, is there any solution that will paste something to gui and click on button? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2019 10:37 AM PDT I'm using an HP-G62 laptop, and about a year ago an update broke ethernet, and I'm just getting around to fixing it. nm-applet shows the ethernet network as "disconnected." I'm running Xubuntu 19.04, kernel 5.0.0-25-generic. When I load kernel 4.9, ethernet works as expected. I think I found a solution to a OpenVPN problem with Ubuntu/Kubuntu network-manager. (With guide) Posted: 30 Aug 2019 02:51 PM PDT Hi. I was having some problems with getting network manager under Kubuntu 19.04 to connect too my openVPN server hosted on a DigitalOcean droplet set up with "https://github.com/angristan/openvpn-install". After some troubleshooting I got it to work by doing the following following steps that I figured out by trial and error. I thought maybe others would like to get a solution to this problem as from my google-foo there was no actual solution out on the web as far as I could see. This seems to me (with my currently limited Linux experience) to be an error with the openVPN implementation in Network manager not reading the ovpn file correctly. The list of packages I have in the guide are all the packages I installed during this troubleshooting so all may not be relevant but I could not say for sure wich of them that might be so I included all of them. I know for sure the network-manager-openvpn package is necessary as the ovpn import will not work at all from my experience with Pfsense openvpn tinkering. I am also fairly sure easy-rsa is a must but not 100% sure on that either. PS!: This guide assume that you have A ovpn file that works when running it from the terminal but times out when using Networkmanager. PPS!: My assumption that this also are a problem in Ubuntu as well as Kubuntu is from others posting about having the same problem on Ubuntu I have not tested this on an Ubuntu install, but I remember having the same type of problems with OpenVPN on ubuntu the last time I ran it.
I am thinking about Crossposting this to other subs, at the moment I think I will crosspost to r/Ubuntu and r/Kubuntu. If you have tips for more subs to crosspost to where this might be relevant please tell me. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2019 09:07 AM PDT On Debian Buster. So I've been downloading stuff from Google Drive with GDrive via terminal. I wanted to back up these files into archives with 7za, encrypt them in 7z, encrypt file names, have NO compression. In addition, I want the output of these files to be on external media because I don't have the space on my drive to create the archive on the same drive. So here was what I thought I should type based on the man page -mhe=on (enables header encryption) -p designates archive password -o output location -mx=0 no compression and at the end- i have the desired location i wanted to archive, with the 7z archive name before that. So for those of you used to 7za you can probably already tell me what I did wrong. Here's my current conundrum, I ran this line and monitored my disk space closely because I didn't have enough of it on my main drive to complete the file if it were t o output there. I quickly noticed that this was actually sucking up data on my main drive and not outputting it to my external. At this point I killed the process in the middle of compression. So I'm wondering, where are these massive temp files located now that I need to somehow remove to free up space again? And how is it that I can format this command for 7za to do what I want properly? Thanks so much for any help. I really just want these archived locally for redundancy. I would use the GUI but there is no option to set compression level that I can find (I want no compression). Edit: https://www.mankier.com/1/7za Edit 2: Navigated to the external drive as my working directory and used this instead. Located incomplete 7z in /home/user/git/gdrive/Photography, which only appeared after a restart. Deleted. Also queried largest files on the drive to clean up/locate. [link] [comments] |
What are the %<letter> arguments called in command launchers/.desktop files Posted: 31 Aug 2019 01:24 AM PDT One example, the %u in an XFCE edit launcher menu. Hoping for a name or where to find a list of all of them since I'm having trouble searching a literal percent sign [link] [comments] |
Running Classic Shell with Wine? Posted: 31 Aug 2019 05:04 AM PDT I really want to have a Windows start menu and style in Linux, and the best program I know that can do this is Classic Shell, which is unfortunetely not supported for Linux. Is there a way to run this program in Linux using Wine or another program? I don't know how Wine works as I am new to Linux. The Linux UI is literally the only thing that is preventing me from switching from Windows. Also, Classic Shell is open source apparently, so why hasn't anybody made Classic Shell available for Linux yet? The program has been out for years. [link] [comments] |
CPUFreq and Ryzen 5 3600 - not enough information? Posted: 31 Aug 2019 08:39 AM PDT Hi, I'm fairly new to linux and all the stuff around I have a question, I installed CPUFreq on my PC (Fedora 30 KDE, kernel 5.2.9) with Ryzen 5 3600 as a CPU however I don't have any fancy information about the CPU in KDE widget that I added to my taskbar. Is there any patch, or something, that I can install that will provide some functions for Ryzen 3000 series? If yes, can you give me a short 'how-to'? Here's a photo of how it looks. https://imgur.com/a/bIzKJqr EDIT: About a informations that I don't have, I saw the recent Level1Techs video where Wendel is showing CPUFreq from Ryzen 7 3900X i belive where he got plenty of stuff there.
