New Laptop for WoW & work

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 09:25 AM PDT

My old crappy Surface 1 died the same week that vanilla WoW was released. Looking to get a laptop I can use to run that without issue. Don't need the mega crazy specs, won't really be doing anything other than using Google chrome and WoW. Any recommendations?

Recently bought a pretty expensive laptop. As i was setting up my drawing tablet, the usb cable dangled and hit the screen. Is the screen fine? Does it usually take more than that to damage the screen?

    Choosing gaming laptop below 800€

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 11:06 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'd like to ask for reccommendations on a Gaming Laptop (used mostly for game dev - unity/unreal/maya/coding - with some minor gaming on my free time).

My budget is around 800€ (if I can spend less it would be ideal), and I'm buying from Portugal.

    I've seen on a local store these 2 options on sale: - Asus TUF FX05 (i5-8300H - 8GB - FHD 60Hz - 1050 - SSD 256 GB) -> 679€ - Acer Nitro V (i7-9750 - 8 GB - FHD 60 Hz - 1650 - SSD 256 GB) -> 799€

I've also seen the Acer Predator Helios 300 on Amazon for 760€ + 40€ shipping that seems to be a great deal, but doesn't have PT keyboard, might get stuck on customs and I have no idea how warranty works (does it have 2 year warranty like local stores? - isn't as simples as walking up and having a confirmation etc)

I'm also looking at the Legion Y540, but without a sale it's above my budget. Previously also looked at the Lenovo L340 gaming, but the single channel put the deal off for me.

What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Advice for my Aero 15 OLED

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 01:43 PM PDT

A few months ago I bought an Aero 15 OLED for gaming and work as a freshman in college. I went with the Aero 15 because of the reports of long battery life, and the option of RTX cards with a 4k OLED display. Other things that have grown on me in the amount of time I've had to use it is its simplistic design (some gaming laptops go overboard with making their laptops looks "cool," a good example being Alienware), the fingerprint reader (makes logging in super fast and easy, which is nice to have in class), the privacy slide over the webcam, the screen's thin bezel, as well as a few other things specific to this model. Overall, this laptop checks all the boxes and then some when it comes to what I was looking for.

Unfortunately though, I began having issues with one of the fans that caused a terrible grinding noise that's very disturbing to myself and people around me. This also lead to problems of overheating which together have made using the laptop for work very difficult. I've been in contact with support, and they're willing to fix it for me. The problem is, most of my classes require some kind of laptop to work on, so the only way for me to fix/replace this would be to buy a new when and then refund this when it comes in.

So this brings me to my question. Should I stick it out and buy a new Aero 15, or try to look for something different? I'm not willing to give up the 4k screen and RTX 2070, the others can I can, if there's another good option. However, the only option I've found that has a 4k display and RTX cards it the Razer Blade 15. It looks nice, but I was already stretching my price range with the Aero 15, and the Razer Blade with the RTX 2070 and 4k display is $400 more than the Aero 15...

I've seen others complain about the build quality of the Aero 15, but I also know of people that have been very happy with it. So I'm kind of at a loss...

Is the Huawei Matebook D 14 still a good laptop?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 09:20 AM PDT

I'm thinking of getting the Huawei Matebook D 14" (Ryzen 5 2500U, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD), but is it still a good idea? Should I wait for the rumoured refresh (3500U) instead? Or is there another laptop I should get?

The computer will mostly be used regular web browsing, and watching movies and TV shows.

Laptop performance depends upon placement of laptop

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 12:59 PM PDT

I have an HP omen 15, with an intel 8th gen cpu and a 1060Ti When I initially got the laptop the performance was as expected. Fifa 18 was running smoothly above 144fps But sometimes later the chassis became a bit bented Now the gaming performance is smooth only when the laptop is placed on my lap, otherwise even fifa 18 has visible lag. What should I do to remedy this?

    Questions about upgrades

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 12:02 PM PDT

Hi guys I have an Acer aspire 5 a515 51 75uy laptop I was wondering about upgradable ram I saw on a few websites that it was possible to upgrade one of the ram slots to 16 gigabytes and the other one was soldered in and at 4gigs is there any way to change this one or does it have to stay at 4 I also saw that it said that it was up to 20 gigabytes and you could get a 16 gigabyte stick and the 4 gigabyte stick but in the future when they come out with 32 gigabyte sticks of ram will you be able upgrade to that or is the laptop only able to handle 20 gigs I was also wondering about upgrading the HDD to an SSD I saw that it's possible and I know that there's a compartment on the back for doing it but I'm wondering are there any specific ssds that you have to use or will any SSD work and if you have any recommendations I'm looking for at least 500 gigs preferably 1 terabyte SSD around 75 to $150 that will work with it and one last question I saw the video of some guy who upgraded to CPU but I don't know how possible that is I know that to do it you would have to take off the whole back cover and the battery and a couple other things but can you do it with my laptop and if so what CPU would you recommend for medium range gaming thanks for any suggestions or help

Good (big name brand, maybe?) USB C wired mouse...

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 11:53 AM PDT

... for Macbooks and Chromebooks with no USB A ports. The ones I see on Amazon all seem to be made of chinesium or are tiny. Are all the brand name mice only USB A or Bluetooth? I don't want the chance of the battery in my mouse dying at an inopportune moment or the C to A dongle getting lost somehow. Or is it tiny mouse time?

Sager 8966 battery life is god awful

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 11:33 AM PDT

I just picked this laptop up brand new and to test the battery life, I played a fullscreen youtube video 1080p with no peripherals connected and it died in an hour and 15 minutes. That is pathetic even for a gaming laptop. Just a heads up for anyone else who is considering picking up this particular machine. And this was with the Windows 10 "Optimize for better battery life" in power management set.

    Specs

    • Sager NP8966 (Clevo P960RD) nVidia RTX 2060 6GB GDDR6, 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9750H
    • [Screen:16.1" 1920x1080 Wide-Angle View LED Matte-Type @144Hz 7ms(Anti-Glare)]
    • [Graphics Controller:nVidia GeForce RTX2060 6GB GDDR6]
    • [CPU 9th Gen Intel Coffee Lake Core i7-9750H, 2.6~4.5GHz 6 cores, 14nm, 12MB 45W]
    • [RAM Sager -16GB:16GB DDR4 2666MHz/PC4 21300 (16G X 1)]
    • [PCIe SSD Slot 1 - Sager Special:250GB Samsung 970 EVO Plus PCIe NVMe SSD + $10]

Where is the best place to buy a laptop from what won't screw you over on warranties??

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 11:22 AM PDT

Hi, I'm looking to buy a XPS 15 7590 laptop. Unfortunately, the build I want isn't available through Costco. I've already been screwed over multiple times by Microsoft and definitely do not want a repeat experience. I looked at Dell's warranty reviews and they're absolutely terrible.

If anyone could give me any advice on where to purchase & get a good warranty that would be fantastic.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 10:22 AM PDT

Does anyone else have this laptop here? The mouse pad works perfectly but the bottom right of it seems to go in more compared to the left with the same force. Is this normal? Or what could be the problem?

Spilled beer on lenovo ideapad 530s

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 08:36 AM PDT

I accidentaly spilled beer on my laptop, Most of the spill landed on the keyboard and touchpad, I've wiped off everything on the exterior. I have turned the computer off, wiped off the excess spill and currently have the laptop upside down on a towel. I do not have the correct screwdriver needed to open the laptop, what is the next step to avoid further damage?
