Should I Wire the house myself or pay for someone to do it?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 11:26 AM PDT

I'm planning on buying the equipment for the network, but if I bought the Ethernet cables and the tools to help with wiring them through the house; I'm thinking about upgrading my family's home network and would rather have most of the devices that I can wired, but this would be a new endeavor for me if I went DIY and possibly a big chance to fudge something up

    Home setup help

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 06:18 PM PDT

Here's my situation. Local cable company is a pain and won't run cable to my house without a large fee but will run it to a barn/workshop I own about 400ft away for no extra cost. To bring it to my house they want almost $3k to put something in place to address signal loss. So I had them run it to the barn and have internet setup there at the barn.

I don't have a good line of sight for an ubiquiti system, so that's ruled out.

My question is would a StarTech Gigabit Ethernet over Coaxial Unmanaged Network Extender Kit 2.4km - IP to Coax Converter - Ethernet to RG6 Coax Adapter Kit (EOC1110K) work? I want to use this to take the coax into my house. Does anyone have experience with this? Any drawbacks besides some speed issues. Keep in mind I've had no internet in my house in PA for over two years besides tethering to my phone. Anything will be better...

    Lost Wifi connectivity

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 08:38 PM PDT

After years of struggling with TWC and all those alike a hired a "one-time payment" guy for internet services.

It's worked well may I say even better than what TWC could ever offer. Anyways, last night I was online gaming when I suddenly got dropped. I do the only thing I know what to do, troubleshoot, in the last it's worked fine. Connection comes back and we're good to go, last night I did the troubleshoot but nothing. So I did as advised in many places, check the cables, reset and so forth.

Ultimately got desperate and when to system and saw something along the lines of "reboot entire system", did that and something else about driver not available for WiFi and so yeah I think I made it worse.

Any suggestions? I have the guys number but I wanna see if I can do anything before I call him.

Any Ideas on How to Stop Youtube Throttling on my Mobile Carrier? (using it as home internet)

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 02:20 PM PDT

Youtube seems to be the only site that my carrier throttles, I'm using straight talk through an AT&T sim card so it could be on either straight talk's or AT&T's end. I use pdanet as a hotspot my speeds range from 10mbps-25mbps down. No the throttling isn't from high data usage I have the truly unlimited plan and have used up to 900gb before with no problems. Watching twitch is fine 1080p60fps with playback being around 10mbps but when I watch youtube I'm limited to 480p playback being capped at 1.3mbps. Using a vpn does bypass this speed cap and allows me to watch HD youtube videos but the slight cut in download speed that happens when I use a vpn makes it so I can't watch twitch in high quality. The vpn I use is NordVPN. Are there any alternatives I can use that wont cut into my download speed?

From expensive setup to rental equipment...Cox

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 08:17 PM PDT

Original setup: Arris SB8200 modem, Netgear Nighthawk AX8 wifi router. Max speeds reached 300MBps once in a great while and usually averaged around 140MBps daily. New setup: Cox owned and rented Technicolor CGM4141 with average speed of 520MBps. I dont want to get rid of my Nighthawk AX8 but it never really reached its potential. Despite that how do I continue using my AX8 when the CGM4141 is a modem and wifi combo? Im hoping that since im now renting the modem router combo from Cox I can get more speed from the AX8.

    Modem question

I'll be in need of a modem for my new home with a 300 Mbps plan and would like to know if the ARRIS SB6183 would be good choice or a refurbished Netgear CM700 for about $5 more. I will mostly be watching Youtube and playing online games such as WoW. Thanks for your help.

    Pots over ethernet

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 07:43 PM PDT

Hey guys. I work for an isp and was at a commercial customer's network rack feeding a neighborhood that we do not outselves service. In other words, we wont build infrastructure to these homes due to cost. This neighborhood has a gatehouse at tge main road where we did built infractructure to.

Anyway, they want a landline. The phone company wont go up there. But in that gatehouse they have a gigabit internet connection. They have a UTP to Ethernet deal in theur rack. The fibers then run to the respective homes up there. It's a pretty cool set up. But they dont have copper for phone lines.

So is there a way to trunk both voice and data on that ethernet line to get a pots line from the gatehouse to a home?

Edit: to clarify. I want to take a POTS line, encapsulate it into ethernet frames, go to another network node and be transmitted as POTS on the other and.

Example, call comes in from Telco, hits an ATA, ata takes all phone signaling signals and encapsulates it into ethernet frames. The ethernet frames travel an ethernet network to another ATA. This ata receives telco controm signals as well as voice. The ata then takes that digital data and puts it back into a POTS line.

Edit 2: GODDAMMIT I TOLD THE GUY TO GET VOIP. THE GUY WAS ASKING FOR EXACTLY WHAT IM DESCRIBING. I TOLD HIM TO GET VOIP BECAUSE HE DOESNT KNOW WHAT TO ASK FOR. IM ASKING HERE FROM A THEORETICAL PERAPECTIVE SO STOP MAKING ASSUMPTIONS. ANSWER THEBQUESTION OR MOVE ON

Need help improving or switching out my home networking solution

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 07:09 PM PDT

I purchased the r7800 nighthawk x4s router on Prime Day for $130. I'm having an issue with the range of the device as it won't reach the far downstairs corner of the house. Strangely enough, the TV there can connect to the 5 GHz network but not the 2.4 but because of the distance stutters a lot and lags.

I did some research and it seems the nighthawk loses signal/quality at near the end of its ranges, I guess that's why the TV at the furthest point of the home isn't able to play television.

What I do with my network:

    • 3 smart TVs (two close to the nighthawk, one at max distance) - streams content from HBO/Netflix/etc.
    • a few smartphones
    • a couple of smart devices; ring, security, sprinkler, solar, thermometer
    • 2 laptops (1 rarely in use)
    • a Cellspot tower connected by LAN cable to the Nighthawk
    • and most importantly a streaming PC which has both a LAN connection and a wifi card (here a stable connection and speed is really the priority)

    In Use vs Past Devices:

    • Netgear Nighthawk x4s r7800
    • Netgear CM500 Modem
    • T-mobile Asus AC1900 Router
    • Hitron E31N2V1 Modem

    Considerations:

    • The initial choice was between the x6s vs the x4s as I heard the x6s covers a larger area, but I went with the x4s because I heard its more powerful
    • I bought the r7800 on Prime Day on sale for $130, I'm not too worried to return it because I think a supervisor will give me a nice deal on a different product.
    • I do require a fast router as I live stream via LAN + WiFi.
    • My ISP provides 400 Mbps down / 20 Mbps up. The internet works better than ever wherever the signal does reach and I love the device.

    Options:

    1. Replace the x4s with the same device (maybe there is something wrong with the 2.4 GHz signal) and add some sort of network extender device
    2. Return the x4s and get a deal from Amazon on a similar device with better range

Which option do you guys suggest and what device would you choose for that option?

What are the benefits of having multiple networks (are there any?)

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 03:00 PM PDT

I've posted this elsewhere on Reddit and was redirected here. So I hope this is the right place :)

So for some reason my dad has set up multiple separate networks at home (five that I am aware of). All are password protected and whitelisted, some are also hidden networks. Why would somebody want/need that many networks? Does it make things faster? Is there some sort of security benefit?

    Access point with OpenVPN server

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 06:37 PM PDT

I want to replace my Netgear WAC104-100NAS because it's total garbage. I'd also like to run an OpenVPN server and be able to configure it via Linux terminal. I think I'll just buy a router and turn off the DHCP server. Anybody know a good option?

(These are separate needs, but I think the best way to get an access point is to buy a nice router, which will probably be Linux based anyway, so I can knock them out at the same time)

Should I get orbit mini or nighthawk x4s?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 01:51 AM PDT

I have a house one story about 1500 sqft. I believe the material of the house makes signal be somehow bad across rooms.

Should I get the orbi mini I saw in Costco for around 150 or should I better get the nighthawk.

I use my internet mainly for streaming then lil gaming. I'm about performance. I have 400 mbps

What do you guys think. I also hope to improve somehow latency/ping which I understand hardware won't fix it because that's my ISP fault. But at least I want to help a lil. Also we'll have better signal across the house and the several devices I have.

I have 3 fire sticks, 1 Roku tv, 2 phones, nest, two roombas, two PCs and loptop I work from home.

Want to get a good router but one of my housemates doesn’t want to spend a lot of money

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 12:00 PM PDT

So I am living in a 4 person house all of which have our own PC setups and will be playing games and some will be streaming. We will be getting a 300mb Verizon plan. We plan to split the router evenly in price but one of our housemates doesn't want to spend more than like $20 for their cut for a router so we don't know what to do. Is there a router that can fit our needs as gamers and be cheap or is their something else we can do? I also don't want to buy an expensive router and then have them just leech off of the router we buy.

    Wifi Setup/New Network

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 10:24 AM PDT

Internet in my household has been typically slow, and as more people use the WiFi, my ping to certain games has become atrocious. I bought a new router, but I don't know if I need a modem and coax cable for it to be fixed. Will a separate coax connection to a separate modem, router, and connection to my Xbox via Ethernet do the job? If not, what do I do instead?

Edit: I'm not really good with this kind of stuff so please pardon my lack of intellect

Recommendations for WLAN in high-density housing?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 05:20 PM PDT

I live in an apartment complex with at least 8 other apartments in the area. Currently, I have a 7 year old Apple Airport Express, and the options are limiting. I worked at a WISP for a time, and I think that Ubiquiti's Amplifi HD sounds like a decent enough option. Just the standalone router for now. Does anybody have any recommendations for unobtrusive routers that are powerful enough to easily penetrate a 1300sqft apartment, and can use a full suite of frequencies (DFS + standard)?

    *Ubiquiti Unifi Ap-AC Lite

I decided on the edge router since I have 150down/10up connection and I was told that the USG will not do as well with SQM Qos, which is honestly one of the biggest reasons Im going with this and not an Asus router lol. Is there anything i'm missing? Anything else I should know? Thanks for any help!

Any benefits of not using NAT?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 04:02 PM PDT

I am using a leased dedicated 10 Gigabit fiber line due to it being the only option providing enough speed (also it can be easily increased if required without digging up the fiber itself, according to my provider), I regularly have to transfer big files (working from home, 200GB and more a file) every day. Included with the service is a /24 subnet, the ISP is willing to lease a router capable of assigning those IP addresses.

Are there any benefits/downsides of using external IP addresses for every device and not using NAT?

A small downside I already know I'd have is the said router - it is a rack mounted one, not sure where I'd put it.

EDIT: Yes, it is really a /24 subnet of public IP addresses. What I didn't mention is that my workplace is paying for my connection, the ISP usually doesn't even provide services for residential customers and, while I don't know how much a dedicated 10Gbps line cost, it is probably quite a lot. IP addresses aren't that expensive, hosting providers like Hetzner lease /24 subnets for around 200$/month

Router to stream 4k movies to tv

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 03:52 PM PDT

Hi! I'm looking for new router to replace my 15$ tplink from 2015. I have a lot of wifi devices at my 1 level apartment. Its like 4 computers, tv, 3 phones and some IoT devices (smarthome). I'm looking for device to share my 30mbps internet and... download movies to external hard disk and stream them to my tv via smb or something like that. Later I want to buy new Synology DS220+ nas, but now router with external hdd must do the work. Im considering 70$ used Synology RT-1900ac or brand new 250$ RT-2600ac OR MR-2200ac. In future I want to change my ISP to something offering 300mbps+ connection. Which solution could you recommend to me? MR-2200ac can work standalone? I know it could extend RT-2600ac with mesh capabilities. Will it work that way with RT-1900ac? Right now my main goal is to deliver comfortable hq content to my tv.

Which wifi extender should I use for my house with three floors where the router is on the top floor, Netgear Nighthawk X4, Netgear EX3700, or TP-Link RE650?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 11:54 AM PDT

Here are the links to the ones I am looking at:

    1. Netgear EX7300 Nighthawk X4 WiFi Range Extender around $105/€93 - https://cdon.dk/hjemme-elektronik/netgear-ex7300-nighthawk-x4-wifi-range-extender-p39016707?utm_source=pricerunner&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=Netgear+EX7300+Nighthawk+X4+WiFi+Range+Extender&utm_content=39016707&utm_campaign=pricerunner_Repeatere
    2. NETGEAR EX3700 - Essentials Edition around $43/38 - https://www.computersalg.dk/i/1157887/netgear-ex3700-essentials-edition?utm_source=PriceRunner&utm_medium=PriceRunnerLINK&utm_campaign=PriceRunner
    3. TP-LINK AC2600 Wi-Fi Range Extender RE650 - around $113/€101 - https://www.computersalg.dk/i/3545614/tp-link-ac2600-wi-fi-range-extender?utm_source=PriceRunner&utm_medium=PriceRunnerLINK&utm_campaign=PriceRunner

    More details:

I am most looking at range and speed. I live in a house with three floors. I am not sure of the exact height, but can try to find that out if you need that information.

The original connection is a fiber net speed which is supposedly between 300 - 1000 Mbps

The original router is on the top floor. There are 3 floors. We would like to place the extender on the middle floor so we can have wifi on the bottom floor.

So far based on what I could read on websites (which I don't know if are paid for) and what I could watch on youtube (again same problem) I got to a shortlist of these three extenders above. They vary quite a lot in price, so I am here to ask for your help, please! Which is the best in terms of speed and range? They differ a bit in the technology they use, the number of antennas, and other things. I don't need all the fancy extra features, just need to extend the wifi so that I can use it downstairs without problems of fallout and speed. Are the expensive ones worth the extra money?

Thank you for reading all this and helping me, it is highly appreciated!

    ASUS RT-AC3200 dying

My ASUS RT-AC3200 is dying after a few years. Constantly drops my speeds to near 0 but not disconnecting. I really liked it while it worked so do I buy another RT-AC3200 or should I upgrade?

What router is considered an upgrade to the RT-AC3200? I'm guessing its the ASUS RT-AX88U? Any other suggestions for an upgrade?

Easiest/Safest way to change DHCP ranges/servers in EdgeRouter (10X)

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 11:17 AM PDT

    Hey HomeNetworking,

So over the last year or so I've gotten more and more into networking but still don't know a whole bunch. Currently my edgerouter is using the standard 192.168.1.0/24 range but now that I have an OpenVPN server up for a couple development partners to use I need to change it to something like 10.0.1.0/24 or something. I've got the DHCP server made on my edgerouter but I'm not sure what's the safest way to go about making sure all my current devices/servers grab from the new dhcp server. If it's as easy as just deleting the old one, great. If someone with more knowledge than I have could help that'd be great, maybe a discord call or something too, not sure.

    Thanks in advance!
