    Summer 2019 Laptop Buying Guide

This is a continually updated list of some of the best laptops for any budget. If you find the list helpful I would greatly appreciate an upvote or share! Laptops are separated into categories and are sorted by price to make them easier to sort through. They have been pulled from a variety of sources including Amazon, eBay, Best Buy, NewEgg, and more. If you have any questions or suggestions please comment below!

Laptops are separated into four categories:

Going away to uni and want a laptop that is reliable for the next 3 yrs, and plays some games as well.

    Posted: 22 Aug 2019 12:58 AM PDT

Windows definitely. Runs some games but doesn't have to be too great. To give you an idea of what games I like to play and ideally what this laptop would play: Total War, Xcom, CIV, Skyrim.

As in about to be a poor student, I'd ideally don't want to spend much. Give me some suggestions.

Lenovo yoga 920 vs Microsoft surface laptop 2

    Posted: 21 Aug 2019 10:34 PM PDT

Hi there, So I'm looking to buy a laptop for uni, I'm headed into first year of a physics/education dual degree and the only requirement is I need the computer to run excel. I realize that there are much cheaper alternatives however this'll be a computer that I will use for personal use and want it to be of good quality and to last. My uncle is an Tech guru and has helped me narrow down my choices to either a Lenovo yoga 920 12gb RAM or a microsoft surface laptop 2 with 16gb RAM. Id like more opinions as to which i should go with because my original impression was i liked the surface more but its also about $800 more expensive and Im not too sure that its worth that much more. Im planning to make a purchase by early next week and would appreciate any advice

Looking for reliable 2 in 1 Laptop 1000-1500€ (Germany)

    Posted: 22 Aug 2019 03:48 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Budget is flexible, but I am very much fine, with spending 1000-1500€ if all criteria are met. I live in Germany * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** The Laptop should definitely be a 2 in 1, this is my most important criteria. I am open to detachable devices as well, but I would like to avoid 2 in 1 with a kickstand such as the Surface Pro. Battery life obviously shouldn't be terrible, but I would definitely be willing to compromise on this, I don't expect to have a tank, batterywise. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Moderately, I do not want a device which is significantly larger than 14 inches though. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** A fully fledged version of Windows 10 is a must. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** As I already said, I would prefer it to be around 13 inches. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** No gaming or editing will be done on this device, I plan to use it almost exclusively for productivity purposes and media consumption. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Doesn't apply * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** As I'm looking for a 2 in it will obviously have a touch screen. I would also really like to have a device which is LTE capable, has Thunderbolt and preferably also a fingerprint reader. Decent build quality is also a requirement, but I would hope, that this is safe to assume with my budget, same goes for a reliable and comfortable keyboard. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Computer Science undergraduate - $1000 budget - coding and light gaming

    Posted: 21 Aug 2019 03:21 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

    • USA
    • $1000

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?

    • Best specifications for the money mostly. I don't care much about 2 in 1 form factor, but I would really like some decent battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Not too heavy and bulky, but if it's for the specs I can make sacrifices

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    • Windows, Mac, or Linux. No Chrome.

Do you have a preferred screen size?

    • Between 12' and 16'

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • I already have a computer for gaming, so I intend for this laptop to be for coding, school and work purposes. Minor gaming at most.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Civ 5, Paradox games, TF2. 1080p quality and at least 30 fps.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • N/A

First year of university and I need something for my Intro to Computer Programming lectures. I would prefer something with at least a 256 NVMe M.2 SSD, 8gb DDR4 ram, and an i5 cpu (or any cpu of a different brand with equal power). Suggestions with better specs are always welcomed, thanks!

I put my external keyboard in front of laptop keyboard which moves the screen far from me. Any ideas on getting the screen closer to me while using an external keyboard?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2019 03:13 AM PDT

Ive tried putting my keyboard on top of the laptop keyboard but that hurts my wrist. I was thinking something like a laptop stand? I just dont really know any good models. I am gaming on the laptop btw.

    Lightweight and Light Gaming

    Posted: 22 Aug 2019 03:12 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2000 Would like to spend less than $1600; USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best Specs first, Good battery life second.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Willing to sacrifice some weight and thinness for performance, but still want light and thin.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light gaming and light photo editing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Warframe and Minecraft (Modded with shaders) are what I've been playing most recently. Would like to playRainbow Six:Siege but understandable if I cannot. All games at 60+ FPS Average preferably.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard, touchscreen, and finger-print reader would be nice, but is not necessarily a priority. Having a dedicated graphics card would be ideal.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been looking at the Asus Zenbook S13 but am wondering what other options are available that I may not know about. Something that could be considered an "Ultrabook".

Would like to play some older games and some indies.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

    Gears 4 and some other pc/xbox exclusives (I have a ps4).

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Good battery life. Portability is key.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

So I'm mostly undecided between 2:

    Acer Swift 3 - i5 8250, MX 150, 256gb ssd, 8gb ram for 600€ (it's this one https://www.acer.com/ac/pt/PT/content/model/NX.GY0EB.004 )

Huawei Matebook D Kepler - Ryzen 5, 256gb sdd, Radeon 8, 8gb ram for 570€ (I think this one is easy to find so I'm not linking it).

The only thing that left me a bit weary about the acer was the screen but I think this exact version already has a matte screen so that shouldn't make it a huge problem at this price range.

I'm happy to hear your thoughts and also if you have other suggestions, here's a link to a price comparison site in portugal: www.kuantokusta.pt

    Thanks in advance.

    RB 15 2018 vs Alienware m15 2018

    Posted: 22 Aug 2019 01:47 AM PDT

I have both of these and for the life of me cannot decide which one to keep, the specs:

    RB15 2018 144Hz FHD w/1070 MaxQ (£1189 - Amazon warehouse)
    m15 2018 144Hz FHD w/1070 MaxQ, 90Wh battery version (£1300 dell refurb w/3 year premier care)

    RB15 thoughts;
I looks nice once I've skinned it to get rid of the silly green logo. I'm worried about long term reliability. A 2nd PSU is expensive. Upgrade to graphics would be via eGPU and having spent some time with an Aorus RTX2070 box the gains aren't generally worth the hassle.

    m15 thoughts;
I wish it didn't have those chunky bezels and it looks pretty gamery which isn't ideal, but it's built very nicely. I like the numpad and macro keys. 2nd PSU is cheap. Graphics amp is a better option than tb3 egpu on most laptops. Warranty and dell support in general is very good in my experience.

..I have a Lenovo x380 Yoga for sensible and ultra portable use.

    Help me!!! :-)

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**Best specs for money.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**Preferably light, but it's not all important

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**I'm gaming. I want to run Monster Hunter World, Overwatch, GTA:V and other games like those at 60fps+

    2-in-1 with 32GB RAM for <$2000

    Posted: 21 Aug 2019 08:12 PM PDT

Hi all, hoping you can help me with my rather specific question.

I'm looking for a 14"-15" 2-in-1 that has (or I can upgrade to) 32GB of RAM without breaking the bank. I don't need dedicated graphics or even an above average CPU (this isn't for gaming), but the 32GB is pretty non-negotiable.

My max budget is about $2000. What are my options for 2-in-1's that I can upgrade to 32GB (even if I have to install the ram myself) in this price range?

    Thanks!

    Need a Color-Accurate W/ Touchscreen for Photo Editing - $2,500

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1, and battery

How important is weight and thinness to you? Extremely

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-14.9 prefer 13.5

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Capture One most of the time, Adobe Premiere sometimes

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't game

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable quality, touch screen, touch pen. Good display.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was looking at the HP X360 with OLED which seems really cool but that screen is way too large. I definitely want something with a good, vivid screen. A smart card reader would be nice to have as well but I realize it's a stretch on 2-in-1s. I am staying away from the MS Surface line and Lenovo.

    Thanks!

    Considering Sager Laptop - Thoughts?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2019 07:14 PM PDT

So, I'm needing a laptop that can handle video editing, coding, some light gaming etc. I was looking at the Asus ROG Strix Scar II, since it had the 1060 that could handle the load I need it too while not completely destroying my wallet.

In my browsing though, I ran across the Sager NP7876. It intrigued me, since it was only a little more, and any other laptops with an RTX 2060 are going to be about $400 more. Ill gladly give up some of the flash of asus to get a better deal, but I don't know much about sager, other than they use Clevo.

Is Sager a company worth going for? Pros + Cons?

Total budget and country of purchase: $1,500, United States

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?: Best Specs for money. Could care less about 2-1, and I can almost always plug it in.

How important is weight and thinness to you?: Not at all.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? 17"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? I use Adobe Premiere Pro, and would like to get into gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Just the basics, and medium settings at 60 fps or better.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad) Not really. I don't want cheap, but I can live with basics just fine, and plan on having an external keyboard/mouse/monitors for extended work/editing sessions.

    Thanks so Much!

    Laptop for civil engineering student

    Posted: 21 Aug 2019 02:25 PM PDT

I need help deciding on a laptop for college, I'll be studying civil engineering, so i'll be using CAD programs etc. which require a laptop that can perform, but i also want one that looks good(not a tank) i don't care about gaming performance, i might play some indie titles on it but i mainly game on ps4. i don't care for a fancy 4k screen with 144hz or anything, but i care about looks, and i need it to last me a while (5+ years)

if any of you are familiar with engineering software such as AutoCAD Civil 3d , revit, etc. what gpu will be enough? is an ultrabook with mx150 okay? or i need i bigger one with a 1060 gpu

my budget is about 1200$, though i might be able to stretch it a bit more

if mx150 is enough i'm considering a Razer Blade stealth (it is on sale for $1100 on amazon), the only problem is that it is 13 inch (but i might be able to live with that)

if not and i need bigger card i'm considering a Razer Blade 15 base model with 1060 max-q (it's about $1500 on amazon) i know there are better ones and also cheaper but it is the only one that i found that looks good (not a thick and scary gaming laptop)

so experienced people please help me deciding and i am also open to suggestions of any other laptops and brands (preferably not apple)
