Best Laptop Recommendations 2019 Guide - General Use, College, Gaming, and Portability Posted: 21 Aug 2019 06:14 AM PDT Summer 2019 Laptop Buying GuideThis is a continually updated list of some of the best laptops for any budget. If you find the list helpful I would greatly appreciate an upvote or share! Laptops are separated into categories and are sorted by price to make them easier to sort through. They have been pulled from a variety of sources including Amazon, eBay, Best Buy, NewEgg, and more. If you have any questions or suggestions please comment below! Laptops are separated into four categories:
Power GamingPower gaming devices typically have larger displays, a heavier weight, good cooling, and powerful graphics cards. $600 - Dell G3 15 - Microsoft.com A cheap gaming device with decent thermal performance but a mediocre build quality.
$877 - Alienware M15 - Dell.com Alienware's lighter model; comes with above-average build quality, 144Hz display, and a long battery life. Use code ** Lcs10off**
$890 - Dell G3 15 + $150 VISA GC - Dell.com Extremely well spec'd device (may want Ram upgrade) but with mediocre display and mediocre build quality.
$1100 - Lenovo Legion Y540 - Walmart A relatively well built device with decent cooling, a 144Hz display, and GTX 1660 Ti GPU. Also consider the pricier Helios 300.
$1300 - Acer Helios 500 - Amazon A larger 17" laptop that's relatively well built and with a powerful Vega 56 GPU (comparable or slightly better than GTX 1070)
$1490 - Lenovo Legion Y740 - Lenovo.com Larger 17" version of the Legion with high end RTX 2070 dGPU. Beware of throttling under load (even with re-paste). 15" also available for same price.
$2000 - MSI GE75 - NewEgg MSI's relatively light gaming device; has above-average thermal performance and a decent build quality
$2380 - ASUS ROG G703 - Newegg Basically a desktop replacement; weighing in at 10.2 lbs with an RTX 2080 (expect throttling)
DISCREET GAMING*Discreet gaming devices offer a combination of portability with gaming potential. They avoid flashy colors and weigh less, but often make sacrifices in price, cooling, or performance compared to 'power gaming' devices. $279 - Lenovo ideapad S340 - Walmart.com A low powered device, yet with UHD 620 graphics it should be fine for low end games (Minecraft, Browser games, LoL)
$400 - Asus Vivobook - Costco Additional fee w/o Costco membership. Vega 8 are still only integrated graphics but fine for light gaming (Overwatch / Fortnite on lowest settings). Consider the 330S w/o a membership.
$590 - Acer Aspire 5 - Newegg Lightweight device with MX150 dGPU but slightly older processor
$610 - Acer Swift 3 - Walmart A slim and light 14" with low end MX150 dGPU and mediocre build quality. Fine for moderate/light gaming.
$670 - MSI GF63 - Amazon A powerful gaming laptop with a low weight, but a less sleek and discreet aesthetic.
$920 - Lenovo Yoga 730 - Lenovo.com A sleek 2-in-1 with great specs, but throttled performance, cooling issues, and poor reliability. Students get 5% off as well.
$1335 - Dell XPS 7590 + $100 VISA GC - Dell.com A fairly thin and light 15" with slim bezels and powerful specs. Be aware of un-upgradable ram.
$1400 - MSI P65 Creator - B&H Thin, sleek, and rigid laptop with decent battery, 144Hz display, and powerful GPU
$1475 - Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme - Lenovo.com An EXTREMELY well built device with great specs but at hefty price tag. Use code THINKXSALE
$1700 - MSI GS65 Stealth - Best Buy Priced at $1600 after $100 student discount. Well built device with decent cooling and decent battery life
ULTRAPORTABLE LAPTOPSUltraportable laptops are lightweight and have 11-14" displays. They are excellent for students, travelers, or anyone looking for a sleek portable device. $163 - Lenovo 130S - Amazon A small, portable, and cheap laptop that comes with 1 year of Office 365 and is fine for light use
$230 - HP Elitebook 840 G1 - Refurbished An excellent price for a refurbished machine that has a sleek build and relatively fast processor.
$279 - Lenovo Ideapad S340 - Walmart A shockingly good value with great specs and slim design, but below average display.
$450 - Lenovo S340 - Costco A larger 15.6" laptop with slim bezels, a large SSD, and excellent warranty program. Consider the Ideapad S340 w/o a Costco Membership.
$745+ - Lenovo Thinkpad T495 - Lenovo.com An extremely well built device with a great keyboard, excellent customer service, and long battery
$800 - Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 - Microsoft.com A sleek and thin windows ultrabook but known for reliability issues. Requires EDU for discount pricing
$1000+ - Apple Macbook Air + Beats Studio 3 - Apple Apple's cheapest new offering and only laptop without a touch bar. Best price for non-students is from Microcenter (in store only).
$1100 - Dell XPS 13 - Rakuten A fairly high spec'd version of Dell's XPS 13 with a 4K display and i7 processor. Requires (free) account on Rakuten
$1200+ - Macbook Pro 2019 + Beats Studio 3 - (EDU EMAIL/ID REQ) The MBP is a bit overpriced compared to windows alternatives, but the best student pricing is from Apple or Best Buy ($100 for students).
$2250+ - 2019 Macbook Pro 15 + Beats Studio 3 - (EDU REQ) Apples most expensive laptop.. Known for its excessive price, poor thermal performance, but sleek design. Also well priced at Best Buy.
GENERAL USE LAPTOPSGeneral use laptops are typically 13.3"-15.6''. They're great for individuals looking for a device for web browsing, watching video, Microsoft Office, and other similar applications. $199 - Lenovo Thinkpad T430 - Refurbished An older, refurbished device that still works well for light gaming (Minecraft, browser games, etc). Consider the HP Elitebook for more storage.
$210 - Lenovo 130 15" - Best Buy An extremely cheap device with decent specs (including a 128GB SSD) but likely a mediocre build quality and display
$279 - Lenovo Ideapad S340 - Walmart A shockingly good value with great specs and slim design, but below average display.
$435 - Refurbished Dell Precision M4800 - Amazon An old but extremely well built laptop with strong specs and great build quality. Retailed for $2500
$500+ - Lenovo Thinkpad E495 - Lenovo.com A relatively well built consumer device with numerous customizations (recommend 1080p display; arguably RAM upgrade).
$950+ - Thinkpad T950 - Lenovo Customizable high end Thinkpad with larger 15.6" display, similarly great build quality, and a long battery life
$950 - Dell XPS 15 7590 - Dell.com A fairly rigid and well built 15" with slim design, thin bezels, and extremely long battery life
$1100+ - Lenovo Thinkpad P52 - Lenovo.com A fairly heavy yet well built and great value 15" with heavy customizability. Thermal performance isn't great until the $1400+ model. Use coupon WSCLEARANCE

Posted: 22 Aug 2019 12:58 AM PDT Windows definitely. Runs some games but doesn't have to be too great. To give you an idea of what games I like to play and ideally what this laptop would play: Total War, Xcom, CIV, Skyrim. As in about to be a poor student, I'd ideally don't want to spend much. Give me some suggestions. [link] [comments] |

Lenovo yoga 920 vs Microsoft surface laptop 2 Posted: 21 Aug 2019 10:34 PM PDT Hi there, So I'm looking to buy a laptop for uni, I'm headed into first year of a physics/education dual degree and the only requirement is I need the computer to run excel. I realize that there are much cheaper alternatives however this'll be a computer that I will use for personal use and want it to be of good quality and to last. My uncle is an Tech guru and has helped me narrow down my choices to either a Lenovo yoga 920 12gb RAM or a microsoft surface laptop 2 with 16gb RAM. Id like more opinions as to which i should go with because my original impression was i liked the surface more but its also about $800 more expensive and Im not too sure that its worth that much more. Im planning to make a purchase by early next week and would appreciate any advice [link] [comments] |

Looking for reliable 2 in 1 Laptop 1000-1500€ (Germany) Posted: 22 Aug 2019 03:48 AM PDT [link] [comments] |
Computer Science undergraduate - $1000 budget - coding and light gaming Posted: 21 Aug 2019 03:21 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase:
Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?
How important is weight and thinness to you?
Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
Do you have a preferred screen size?
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
First year of university and I need something for my Intro to Computer Programming lectures. I would prefer something with at least a 256 NVMe M.2 SSD, 8gb DDR4 ram, and an i5 cpu (or any cpu of a different brand with equal power). Suggestions with better specs are always welcomed, thanks! Work/Multimedia Laptop - ~600€ Posted: 22 Aug 2019 03:12 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Around 600€. Portugal * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** All rounder for the best price possible. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** One of the most important factors. I'm going to move a lot. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows but I don't mind if it's not included. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 14/15.6 * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Would like to play some older games and some indies. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Gears 4 and some other pc/xbox exclusives (I have a ps4). * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Good battery life. Portability is key. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** So I'm mostly undecided between 2: Acer Swift 3 - i5 8250, MX 150, 256gb ssd, 8gb ram for 600€ (it's this one https://www.acer.com/ac/pt/PT/content/model/NX.GY0EB.004 ) Huawei Matebook D Kepler - Ryzen 5, 256gb sdd, Radeon 8, 8gb ram for 570€ (I think this one is easy to find so I'm not linking it). The only thing that left me a bit weary about the acer was the screen but I think this exact version already has a matte screen so that shouldn't make it a huge problem at this price range. I'm happy to hear your thoughts and also if you have other suggestions, here's a link to a price comparison site in portugal: www.kuantokusta.pt Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

2-in-1 with 32GB RAM for <$2000 Posted: 21 Aug 2019 08:12 PM PDT Hi all, hoping you can help me with my rather specific question. I'm looking for a 14"-15" 2-in-1 that has (or I can upgrade to) 32GB of RAM without breaking the bank. I don't need dedicated graphics or even an above average CPU (this isn't for gaming), but the 32GB is pretty non-negotiable. My max budget is about $2000. What are my options for 2-in-1's that I can upgrade to 32GB (even if I have to install the ram myself) in this price range? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Need a Color-Accurate W/ Touchscreen for Photo Editing - $2,500 Posted: 21 Aug 2019 11:55 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $2500 USA Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-14.9 prefer 13.5 Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Capture One most of the time, Adobe Premiere sometimes If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Reliable quality, touch screen, touch pen. Good display. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was looking at the HP X360 with OLED which seems really cool but that screen is way too large. I definitely want something with a good, vivid screen. A smart card reader would be nice to have as well but I realize it's a stretch on 2-in-1s. I am staying away from the MS Surface line and Lenovo. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Considering Sager Laptop - Thoughts? Posted: 21 Aug 2019 07:14 PM PDT So, I'm needing a laptop that can handle video editing, coding, some light gaming etc. I was looking at the Asus ROG Strix Scar II, since it had the 1060 that could handle the load I need it too while not completely destroying my wallet. In my browsing though, I ran across the Sager NP7876. It intrigued me, since it was only a little more, and any other laptops with an RTX 2060 are going to be about $400 more. Ill gladly give up some of the flash of asus to get a better deal, but I don't know much about sager, other than they use Clevo. Is Sager a company worth going for? Pros + Cons? Total budget and country of purchase: $1,500, United States Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?: Best Specs for money. Could care less about 2-1, and I can almost always plug it in. How important is weight and thinness to you?: Not at all. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? 17" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? I use Adobe Premiere Pro, and would like to get into gaming. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Just the basics, and medium settings at 60 fps or better. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad) Not really. I don't want cheap, but I can live with basics just fine, and plan on having an external keyboard/mouse/monitors for extended work/editing sessions. Thanks so Much! [link] [comments] |
Quick question: Will any m.2 SSD work in an MSI GS65-8RE? Posted: 21 Aug 2019 09:43 PM PDT I'm thinking about picking up the one linked below (Evo 860). Does it have to be NVMe or will this SSD work? Thank you so much! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Aug 2019 08:52 PM PDT So I recently posted here about what laptop to buy for school.. I'm a computer science major It was either LG Gram, Microsoft Surface laptop 2, or Dell XPS 13 and now it's between surface laptop 2 and Dell Currently Dell is on sale through Dell's website... Intel core i7 (8th Gen), 16 GB RAM, and 256 SSD. It's FHD for $1,361.41 with tax included.. I'm not aiming for Dell's XPS 13 more and since it has thunderbolt 3 I can use my monitor for hw etc. Just wanted to share with you guys [link] [comments] |
Not sure which laptop to pick between these two. Posted: 21 Aug 2019 08:38 PM PDT My budget is 700 at most and these seemed to be the only two that I found that have good specs for their price. Any alternatives would be helpful. I am just looking for a laptop that I will be using for programming in college. Thanks!

Laptop for civil engineering student Posted: 21 Aug 2019 02:25 PM PDT I need help deciding on a laptop for college, I'll be studying civil engineering, so i'll be using CAD programs etc. which require a laptop that can perform, but i also want one that looks good(not a tank) i don't care about gaming performance, i might play some indie titles on it but i mainly game on ps4. i don't care for a fancy 4k screen with 144hz or anything, but i care about looks, and i need it to last me a while (5+ years) if any of you are familiar with engineering software such as AutoCAD Civil 3d , revit, etc. what gpu will be enough? is an ultrabook with mx150 okay? or i need i bigger one with a 1060 gpu my budget is about 1200$, though i might be able to stretch it a bit more if mx150 is enough i'm considering a Razer Blade stealth (it is on sale for $1100 on amazon), the only problem is that it is 13 inch (but i might be able to live with that) if not and i need bigger card i'm considering a Razer Blade 15 base model with 1060 max-q (it's about $1500 on amazon) i know there are better ones and also cheaper but it is the only one that i found that looks good (not a thick and scary gaming laptop) so experienced people please help me deciding and i am also open to suggestions of any other laptops and brands (preferably not apple) [link] [comments] |
