Locking down Android Tablet for Distraction-Free Writing?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 08:04 PM PDT

Will Restricted Accounts allow me to add a non-child user, but limit that account to only one or two apps (such as Google Docs, Google Drive, and maybe Pandora) on that specific Android tablet, without negatively affecting the Google account being used beyond the specific tablet?

My wife wants a laptop or tablet that will allow her to focus on her writing, preferably with Google Docs or another app that †supports Google Drive, but that will not afford her any opportunity for distraction - web browser, videos, games, or even a store to browse. It even has to withstand moderate poking at the security trying to bypass it in fits of boredom. She is tired of scanning pages from her typewriters, and she writing on her PC, laptop, iPad, iPhone, just has too many ready distractions for her.

The plan, if possible: I would set it up as Device Owner, and add a Restricted Profile for her, which she would sign in to her Google account. I would then limit her to just the apps she wants on it.

Some other alternatives we are considering include GalliumOS on a ChromeBook, a custom RPi build, or a reMarkable tablet, but we'd prefer something that can use Google Docs or at least Google Drive, and if possible connect a USB keyboard (I've heard some can do this?).

And, if this will work, does anyone have any good recommendation for Android tablets for this purpose? Since it's for word processing use, doesn't need a high end screen, powerful GPU, or much storage.

Is the Samsung Find My Mobile function affected by Data Saver?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 02:52 PM PDT

I've got a very small data cap on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 because I'll mostly be using wifi or have it tethered to my mobile phone which has a much more generous data cap.

I've got data saver turned on but I can't see any entry for the find my mobile function - I've set it to show system apps in the "Allow app while data saver on" window.

Is the find my mobile function there under a different name? Or does it use something like google play services?

Is there an app (or other method) that allows you to disable specific apps from using your mobile data at all?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 04:25 PM PDT

I transitioned from iPhone to Android a while back and this has been one of the very few downsides. In your iPhone settings, there was a slider that allowed you to disable apps from data entirely, whereas in Android settings there's only options to restrict "background data". My wifi at home tends to randomly disconnect, and on top of that I'm very forgetful and it leads to me accidentally watching YouTube for two whole hours on cellular data. Besides the obvious "just pay attention to your data usage", does anyone have any suggestions? Doesn't neccesarily have to be an app.

Edit: found something that works :) thank yall!

Does Android Device Manager's lock feature also lock display of sensitive notification content?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 02:37 PM PDT

When I have my phone on me, I usually change my lock screen's security settings to display sensitive notifications. Usually it's just a text message or an email or something but I have the phone on me so it saves me having to unlock the phone to see who just texted me. The rest of the phone is locked with passcode and finger print.

Today I accidentally left my phone at someone else's house and was going to go pick it up in another hour or so but decided to lock the device remotely so I'm curious if that meant that device manager also locked sensitive content as well when I did that or if my phone would still ring while it was locked.

    Any ideas?

Just switched to android. What should I do to get ads free navigation and YouTube?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 02:32 AM PDT

    Hi friends.

I'm a long time iOS user and I just received a Huawei P30 pro as a gift. This phone looks great but I need a little help since I know nothing about the android world.

What should I use to get ads free browsing and YouTube?

Which are other apps I can't miss on Android?

    Thank you all so much.

Is it possible to use tor proxy like if it was a dns? Could I use it like a normal ip without the IP changing all the time? Or use it like a normal proxy?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 05:53 PM PDT

I want to use my browser with tor but I don't want to have a ip changing all the time, I just want to have a normal ip but configured with tor. Is this possible? Like using the dns? If possible, what port do I use?

See if app is running with adb/shell command?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 03:36 PM PDT

I'm trying to set up a flow in Automate, but I need a way to see if an app is running or not. I don't think Automate has any simple blocks that can do this, but there is a block that will let me run shell commands.

I'm using adb to test commands, but I haven't found anything that really works. I need something that will give me a list of running apps, or preferably, something that will just tell me if an app is running or not.

    Please help!

App notifications delayed while on home WiFi, not delayed when on work WiFi or not on WiFi at all

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 03:02 PM PDT

Title says it, notifications for various things (Snapchat, Gmail, etc) get delayed / not shown until I open the app when on my home WiFi - but not anywhere else.

Device: Galaxy S8, Android Version 9

Tried disabling "optimize battery usage" for certain apps, doesn't really seem to have an affect. Not sure if there's something I can figure on the phone settings or on my WiFi router settings to fix this?

    Recent Call Suggestions?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 02:03 PM PDT

Is there a way to get call suggestions from my recent calls list rather than just my contacts? I'm willing to change dialers or even root my phone if needed to get this functionality.

    I have a Moto z4 with Verizon.

    Sending links in instagram android

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 04:04 PM PDT

Is it not possible? When i send a link it does not convert into a clickable version that takes you to the website.

I just switched from iphone and it was possible there.

Is this fixable from the phone settings? Or is this just how the app is?

Using Android AOSP for embedded device

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 12:28 PM PDT

I want to use Android AOSP (without GMS) as OS for an embedded device, is there any retex about this. I have some questions about this:

    • What is the used system for providing OTA updates?
    • I heard about Google providing updates for only 3 years so we need to adopt next major update during 3 years, is it true?
    • I heard about project treble that aims on providing forward compatibility on vendor implentation part, any experience on that?
    • What are the faced difficulties / challenges?
    • Any other subjects?

    Thank you.

"Slow Pixel", not a dead pixel spot

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 09:08 AM PDT

My wife's new Samsung Note 10+ (T-Mobile) is having a weird issue sporadically.

When she turns it on, there is a spot at the top of the phone (next to the camera) that takes a second/lags behind the rest of the screen. She and I are worried this is a potentially dying pixel spot (clump of pixels). The problem is the issue isn't the easiest to replicate; when it happens, we can replicate it repeatedly, but later it will be fine and we can't get it to happen again.

Is this a dying pixel clump? Normal? Worth trying to exchange the phone for a new one? Not worth spending any more time worrying about?

Looking to buy an ASUS ROG phone 2, but I'm worried about something. Removed - rule 2

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 04:57 PM PDT

The ASUS ROG phone 2 is supposed to come out in the west soon (not sure if it already has or not), and I really want one. There were 2 versions that came out in China however, one 500 dollar version and one 900 dollar version, with 8gb of RAM and 12gb of RAM respectively. The 500 dollar one was a special chinese "tencent edition" and was loaded with chinese apps and things, but I also heard that it doesnt have any sort of LTE bands, which is terrible (I saw this information on a comment for the phone somewhere). Anyway, recently there have been ebay posts like this and this that have me confused. Theyre listed as 8gb and 500 dollars, but they also both have "GSM LTE 4g" listed on there. This contradicts what I thought the phone had, which leaves me confused. Are these legit? Are they the tencent version and have chinese software on them?
