Amazon is still running decent sales for the Intel gamers day

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 01:38 AM PDT

So yesterday Amazon had a good sale on the Acer Predator Helios 300 2019 version sadly it's not still on however the older 2018 version is going for the lowest price ever, it doesn't have the best cooling system and it will throttle under heavy load however with a little tweaking it's still a great option for the price .

There is also a few more premium options like the MSI GE63 RTX 2060, MSI GE63 RTX 2070 this has the full RTX 2070 not the Max Q version .

The Newer Dell G5 is still on sale .

Also if you are interested of the performance of the Acer Predator but with an RGB keyboard you could check the MSI GL63

It's also worth mentioning that there is a few good deals on desktop as well like This and This .

Looking for a photo editing and all-around laptop

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 02:36 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

The ideal would be 1000 € maximum, buying from France.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Best for the money!

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important at all. Laptop mainly stays at home, maybe taking it to uni from time to time.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    I'm used to Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A, but I quite like 15.6, not too big not too small I think. But whatever is better first!

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'm looking for a laptop that could handle Adobe Lightroom well, and even if it's more rare these days for me to work on it, Photoshop. Also, a good surfing experience (for example I'm thinking about having no problem when watching twitch streams or no severe crash / slowing-down with multi-tasking on Firefox). some light gaming might be in the way, even if lately I was just using GeForce Now for all the games my PC couldn't handle.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

If you manage to find something that could run Witcher 2 decently and same for Overwatch, i would be liking that greatly. (for me, decently is equal or above 30 fps)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Not really, if there is an SD Card reader for importing pics from camera to laptop it would be a nice addition.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Thank you in advance if you have any idea on what could be a good pick for a laptop! Can't find the exact reference by my current laptop is very similar to the Asus R556LJ-XX956T. I thought it was a great thing to finally go from my old i3 to this laptop with i5, but it can't handle editing without stopping to respond after 5min. Same for firefox where if I have 10 tabs open it will slowly and slowly slow down until it keeps stopping to respond after a few minutes. Really getting sick of this laptop lol. Cheers.

US $750 15.5 Laptop suggestion request

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 09:31 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget and country of purchase: US. My budget isn't well defined, but I would really really like to stay under $750, though I can go above.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Huh, didn't even know 2 in 1 was a thing. Sounds neat though. Battery life is rather important. Particularly, I'm going to be living in a van, so if I'm boondocking, I have a limited number of watt-hours to work with, and more watts means more batteries and more gas burnt, so more money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'm not experienced enough with laptops really to say. I would like to be able to carry it? If it fit in a backpack that would be good.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I don't require a particular one, though I only have experience with Windows and Linux. I'm not 100% certain all my games will run on Linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'm ambivalent, but my last laptop was 15.6 and I liked that.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Just gaming. Factorio, Subnautica, Dwarf Fortress, heavily modded Skyrim are some examples of heavy games I might run on it.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above. Super fast FPS is not really a problem, I don't game competively. I never really measured what delay I'm happy with, but less than 100ms? I'm happy with medium or lower graphics qualities if it makes the game run well. More is nice though.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? So my last laptop, an Acer Aspire E5-575G-53VG, developed a problem after about a year where the screen cracked. It was just within the warranty so I got it fixed. But then it cracked again, and then its replacement also cracked, and I determined the problem was the back left corner of the main casing was subtly bent up and it would ruin any further screen I put in. So I gave up and used an external monitor for the past year and a half, lol. I dropped a couple things on it recently and now it's given up the ghost (vga port won't work though it turns on) and I'm not sure getting it fixed is worth it. So I'd like something... Sturdier. And also just better in performance. Comfort of using the track pad and keyboard would also be nice. Touch screen is... Cool, but not necessary.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I guess I kinda said everything above lol. IPS monitor would be nice so I could have the screen (and my eyes) at a wider angle range. A laptop known for good (or at least not terrible) privacy practices would be good. I've looked at the E5-576G-5762 and it looks cool. So does the AN515-51-55WL, but it seems like it uses more power. I'm not sure if it consumes more on idle? Having a power usage figure in watts for idle /low /medium /high usage would be handy.

Laptop for school. A$800 (US$550) for a Lenovo Ideapad 330s (i7-8550u, 8 GB RAM, 1TB HDD, GTX 1050), is it a good deal?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 01:07 AM PDT

    Hi there!

So I recently saw this post on ebay, https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Lenovo-Ideapad-330s-15IKB-Full-HD-15-6-Nvidia-GTX-1050-4G-i7-8550u-8G-1TB/254338204299?hash=item3b37bd028b:g:qZMAAOSwnBpdXzdO .

I'm planning to get a new laptop for high school and uni (hopefully). I'm doing a multimedia course currently and would need to use the Adobe Suite. I would also like to do some light gaming. I think the specs on paper sounds pretty good for the price, bear in mind prices of laptops in Australia are ridiculous. I also could get a 1TB SSD one for and extra A$100.

However, I've been struggling to find reviews on the laptop and would like to know more about it, especially the battery life. The reviews I watched online are from Indian ones. Nothing against them, but I just feel the reviews are a bit lenient and too nice (if that made sense).

My alternative is the MSI PS63 (i7-8565U, 8 GB RAM, 512GB SSD, GTX 1050ti), which the lowest I've found here goes for A$1800 (US$1200). Its lighter, has better built quality, better specs, and great battery life, but its also twice the price. I feel the PS63 would be the better purchase in the long run, but I can't afford it.

I'm buying it using my own money, so I don't really want to spend too much if I can. Ideally I would like to spend around A$1000 (US$650), but am willing to go to A$1500 (US$1000). Laptop suggestions are much appreciated.

    Thank you in advance.

Need Help Not Making a Mistake.

I am a terribly impulsive person. My PC died this week and I NEED to replace it. Tldr and links at the bottom.

I'm going for a Laptop this time around because games I enjoy are usually pretty low on the graphical side so I'm in the Stealth Gaming catagory with my top end being like retail World of Warcaft.
My budget isn't incredibly high but if I use a local place I can finance to get something a bit nicer. (CAD $500 in hand/1500ish on Finance.)

I was going to buy from a resell app but as it turns out I'm stupid about what graphics cards in laptops are good and whats junk. So here comes your part (blessed be the reader)

TLDR: Help me not go blow a bunch of dough on a piece of junk. Open to buying online just keep in mind I'm Canadian and my cash on hand budget is much tighter.

Looking for a laptop for Graphic Design

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 08:06 PM PDT

Hello! I am looking for a laptop for graphic design. Below is my criteria:

Total budget and country of purchase. CAD 1300 (USD 1100). Buying in Canada.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 inches (Minimum 90% sRGB color accuracy)

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Illustrator, Photoshop, XD

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No preference

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Minimum 90% srgb display

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I intend to use it for a work so I require at least 1TB storage (HDD or SSD, don't care as long as it's cheap)

Color accuracy is the most important aspect for me. All the rest of the specs can be compromised upon.

I know there is Dell XPS 15 (old & new, both) that perform wonderfully. Unfortunately, they're not available in my price range.

The cheaper alternative I found is Lenovo Yoga 730 15" which fits in my budget. It has got 90% sRGB color accuracy and 16GB RAM (8GB onboard + 8GB DIMM).

Please help me know if it is a good laptop or there is anything better I can get for that price.

Laptop for use with 4k external display

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 10:36 PM PDT

a* Total budget and country of purchase:

    Around 1000 dollars, United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best specs for the money, especially a good graphics card. Decent battery life would be nice. Don't care about the screen, I plan on using an external monitor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'd prefer if it wasn't a tank. I will be occasionally taking this with me to school, so decently portable.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

All of the above. CAD, video editing, and gaming. I want something decently powerful that can keep up with just about anything I throw at it.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I want to be able to play most games at high settings. The Hitman games, GTA 5, and Just Cause 4 are some that I definetly want to be able to comfortably play. I want to utilize the monitor as much as possible.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good I/O. This will mostly be hooked up to an external monitor, with an external keyboard. The outer stuff isn't hugely important, I mainly care about the inside specs.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The $1000 budget is slightly flexible. I'm willing to spend a couple hundred extra if it's really worth it, but I'm trying to save money for the monitor and keyboard. I don't expect to be able to play games at 4k, but I want to take advantage of it as much as possible.

Is the HP Spectre x360 2019 good for college students?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 10:15 PM PDT

Hi! I'm starting college this year and I'm a physics/astronomy major. I've been looking around and I really like the HP Spectre and I found it on a good sale for about $1000 with all the features I would like. I was just wondering if this laptop would be a good choice for college, and if it isn't, are there any other laptops that are also 2-in-1 like this one and look nice? I filled the form below to be more specific. Thanks!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1100 and the United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 form (I want to take good notes), good battery life, specs, in that order.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would really prefer something lightweight and portable.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Prefer Windows, don't like the layout of Mac.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be taking a computing and programming class, nothing too much.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not a gamer.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen (for taking notes), SSD, fingerprint reader might be nice.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. All above the form.

    Less than $500, US

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 09:26 PM PDT

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would prefer something thinner but not a dealbreaker. It will be sitting at home 99.9% of the time

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. No requirement, open to Chrome OS, Windows, or Mac

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, backlit keyboard, decent build quality

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I currently have a 2009 Macbook pro. At the time, I bought a Macbook since I was starting college and wanted a "cool" computer. Years ago, I added a SSD, upgraded the RAM, and swapped out the battery. It has finally started to come apart and I'm looking for a replacement. I don't use my laptop for any kind of gaming or file editing. I use my work laptop for the Office suite and any editing.

I only use my home laptop to watch YouTube videos, stream content to my TV from the laptop, and watch anime. I'm sure most modern laptops can do this but I'd like something that can stream videos in 1080p.

    School Laptop - USA - $750-1000

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 08:38 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $750-1000ish (flexible up or down), USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life, specs. 2in1 is a negative.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Thinness somewhat, weight don't care.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15", maybe slightly smaller

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No. Mainly text editing, web browsing, compiling.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard. I almost never touch the mouse so I don't care about the touchpad. Prefer no bells and whistles like optical drive or touchscreen. I use the keyboard. Tenkeyless and smaller space bar preferred.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Noise is important to me. I'm not going to be doing anything very computationally intensive very often, I want it to remain basically silent when I'm just editing or web browsing.

    Reliable laptop for a student

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 08:24 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: <$600, USD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I definitely prefer good battery life as I need to be able to use it in class all day with minimal charging.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I carried around a huge gaming laptop for a year and decided I would never do that again. I have a desktop for that. My laptop just needs to be able to do work and be portable, so I want something smaller.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Definitely not ChromeOS, and I'm not really a Mac guy. Windows preferred, and if needed I can throw on a lightweight Linux distro on my own.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A just small enough to be carried in a backpack

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I need to be able to write, code, and surf the web

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Maybe RuneScape

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? It needs to be durable enough to survive being carried to class every day. I'd like a clicky keyboard but it's not a high priority thing. I absolutely need a decent touchpad as the one I'm currently using is just awful (cheap chromebook woes) and it's not practical for me to bust out the wireless mouse on these tiny-ass desks. A touch screen would be nice, but I've managed without one for this long and haven't had any problems. No need for a fingerprint reader or optical drive of any kind.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I need to replace the cheap chromebook I got because it's cheap and a chromebook. The touchpad and certain keys don't work well, I hate the OS (and dual booting crouton is kind of annoying to deal with), and the bezel is thiccer than a jar of cold peanut butter. Storage isn't really a concern for me right now, so I could easily get by with a small SSD with no secondary storage. Any heavy processing can be offloaded to my desktop, so I really just need this for use in class and while studying.

Is the dell XPS 13 too small for college (essays, video editing etc)? Would the XPS 15 be better?

The MBP 13 inch looks great but despite having a similar screen size, the thin bezels and different aspect ratio on the Dell XPS 13 makes it look tiny! The 15 looks more powerful but I'm worried that it won't be portable enough and be too bulky to use in lectures. Any help would be appreciated.

    Question: Heat Issues with i9-9900k

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 08:06 PM PDT

This isn't a suggestion request per say, so sorry for breaking format. I'm wondering if anyone has experienced heat issues with any heavy gaming laptops if they're running an i9-9900k and an RTX 2080? I'm going through the process of building a custom laptop and have heard that this can be a major issue.
