Hello everyone! This is my first Reddit post.

So I unfortunately missed out on a 250$ discount on Best Buy for the new ASUS ROG Zephyrus M GU502GV ( https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-gu502gv-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060-1tb-solid-state-drive-brushed-metallic-black/6338248.p?skuId=6338248 if you want the link) and now it's back to a price that I can't really afford.

I wanted to get the Zephyrus M due to sleek look (doesn't scream gamer), small form factor, good build quality, RGB per key (yeah I know), and decent battery life. ASUS Zephyrus lineup is also known for decent thermals.

I also wanted a laptop with an RTX 2060 or GTX 1660 Ti that includes a minimum of 512 GB SSD and i7-8750H.

    I have 3 questions:

    1. Does anyone know when these types of discounts come around? I'm hoping to get a laptop before September but preferably before $1.8k. Apparently, there are back to school sales and July 4th sales but I'm not sure if this applies to laptops.
    2. If anyone knows any laptops that generally fit the above criteria at prices at or below ~1.8k please let me know. I have been searching for a while but I might've missed out a few options
    3. Should I just buy the laptop from best buy at this price or is it worth waiting for a better deal?

$2000 USA, Mac vs. Lenovo X1 Carbon

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 08:02 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$2000, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? 8/10

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Mac or Windows, that is the question.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15.4"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good trackpad.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I don't have a background in quant finance - I used to work in equity research (analyzing financial statements) and all of my work was in Excel and PowerPoint. I'm planning on attending a bootcamp to learn Data Analytics and Web Development.

Given that I'm an entry level learner, does it matter what platform I use?

I hope to apply what I've learned in finance; does a Windows machine work better for this case since I can utilize the full version of Excel?

Different schools use different computers. For example, NYU's website recommends students get a Mac while some bootcamps prefer to use Windows. Does it make sense to get a Mac so I have the option to use VM to get Windows?

Razer Blade 15.6" or Macbook Pro 2019 15-inch for Davinci Resolve

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 02:39 AM PDT

I'm a filmmaker with an interest in purchasing one of these two laptops to be my somewhat main editing device. My previous desktop had a 1060 3gb, and that was more than enough for me to edit my short films (codecs being: DNG raw 1080, Prores 2.5k upward to 4k on a downscaled 1080 timeline).

I was looking into the Razer Blade 15 (2070 Max-Q, 8th gen i7, 512gb SSD, 16gb ram) against the (much better looking, yet considerably more expensive) newly updated 2019 Macbook Pro 15 (Vega 20, 512gb ssd, 16gb ram).

I'd love if anyone that has used the Vega 20 iterations with Resolve could comment on the Mac's reliability and strength (or lack thereof) in intense workflows. Razer is great, and most probably the more reliable choice, but I am really vying for the MBP to win this.

Looking for a quality laptop for my mom that is slim and looks premium

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 03:56 AM PDT

    Laptop for light work

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around 1000€ aka around 1200 American dollars, purchasing from Slovenia (Eu)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't want a 2 in 1 for my mom, it would be unnecessary. Good battery is always a good thing so and the specs don't need to go over 8gb ram and i5 processor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important. I want a 15 or a 17 inch slim one that doesn't weigh a lot.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inch preferably or 17 inch

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Word and other Microsoft office programs and watching movies. And reading emails and stuff, just the basics.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard is a priority, and a good build quality.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Just need a laptop that is very slim and is good enough for basic work on the computer. I want 15 inch with a good screen, good keyboard and a good build quality.

I'm not very knowledgeable about prices and stuff and there is so many different pricing that I don't know which is the best value.

Laptop cooler for an Asus x570z

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 03:15 AM PDT

I was wondering if a vacuum type cooler would work on my laptop, its exhaust are at the back and some parts of the monitor most likely will block a vacuum type cooler from sticking into the whole exhaust. Btw my laptop also has intakes at the back, bottom and top. Playing overwatch at high settings at room temp (Philippines) makes the gpu heat up to around the mid 80s (celsius).I assume cpu temps mostly are in the mid 80s too. So I was wondering if a non vacuum type can also make a big difference.

Is the Lenovo Ideapad s540 14 inch worth it?

Im looking at this laptop which has a 1080p display at 250 nits, 512gb ssd, 8gb of ram, i5-8265u and the Nvidia MX250. My usage scenario is mainly just to watch videos, do assignments and some non intensive gaming eg Minecraft but my main concern is the 250 nits display. Is it dim by todays standards or will it be bright enough for outdoor usage as the dislplay is anti-glare? thnaks

Any reason NOT to buy this laptop??

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 10:56 PM PDT

I'm currently in the market for a new laptop for college, I'll need something moderately powerful for some gaming and intensive programs such as blender and UE. I've spent quite literally 20+ hours searching for a new laptop, pretty much driving myself crazy. I've just come across the new Asus ROG Zephyrus M GU502 laptops from 2019 which seem literally perfect for me, I can't find a single flaw with them and I'm ready to pull the trigger, but wonder if I'm missing something- no laptop is perfect!

I need a light, slim laptop with processor power of i7-8750h or better and gpu power of gtx 1070 or better. I need 144Hz, IPS, 1080p with slim bezels. Under $2k, decent battery life 70+Wh, 16GB RAM (ideally dual channel), 512Gb+ SSD NVMe, and I need it to look nice and professional, not "gamer" style, with sturdy build. This is the first laptop to check all the boxes.

    Other computers I'm looking at: MSI GS65 w/ 1660ti, Razer Blade 15 (2018) with 1060max-q, and Lenovo Legion y740.

    Need help choosing a Laptop

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 02:06 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm newish on these parts but I hope some of you can help me.

So, I'm a Computer Science Student in Portugal, and my current laptop is an Asus f541uv-56a92cb3 that is now 3 years old.

My current computer is painfully slow on Windows and is normal-slow on Linux Ubuntu (had it dual booted in March). I use it for simple programming tasks from uni, Unity game dev in my free time and I also play videogames (like overwatch, league of legends, etc, also because it can't run anything better than that), and I hoped to bw able to still do all these things and also start in Android Development (which I heard can be a bit heavy) and other more heavy development experiences and games, while also allowing me to do what I do now more fluidly. I was looking for something of around 800-900€.

Thanks in advance for your help!

MacBook Pro 13 vs Surface Pro 6 for PhD in Statistics/Econometrics. Which is a better choice?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 01:07 AM PDT

Next year I will start with my PhD in Statistics/Econometrics and I am wondering, which laptop is better. I will probably mostly use R, Python and Matlab, but the emphasis is on R. Currently I have a MacBook Pro 13 mid-2014 model. Although it is still working, I am noticing some slowdowns/problems in R (mainly because of RAM, I guess) and battery life drain. This is why I am thinking of buying a new computer. I am currently deciding between these two:

Surface Pro 6 - 512 GB / Intel Core i7 / 16 GB RAM for 1.844,10 € (without the keyboard (140€ for my native language one)).

    MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar 2019 - i5 / 16GB RAM / 256 GB for 2016.51€ (or around 2300€ if with my native keyboard)

I would normally prefer a MBP, as I have an iPhone and an iPad, and the connectivity between them is great, but there are several things that are making my decision harder.

Cons for MBP (and pros for SP6):

    • I have heard that the MBP keyboard has some problems (personally I do not like the feel of it but could get used to it). But I have read, that the surface keyboard is good, even for longer typing periods.
    • Touch Bar: Not really a dealbreaker, but certainly a nuisance. Much worse than a normal key row.
    • Price: Especially if you compare the performance and disk space (and the upcharge for the keyboard layout I am used to).
    • No touch screen capability for note taking/annotation. Although, not that big of a deal as I can do that in my iPad.
    • Performance: I presume that the Surface is faster (correct me if wrong). It also has double the storage. This is important, especially for longevity.
    • Not all Excel features are present (and sometimes Excel is just required).

Pros for MBP (and cons for SP6):

    • Better durability and longevity (based on my experience with my MBP and other Windows computers). I do not know, if the SP6 could last 3 to 4 years, working perfectly (One of the main concerns).
    • Ports: Even though they are really unpractical atm, I could imagine having at least one USB C port is useful. Also, the ports on the SP6 are just sad.
    • Much nicer latex editor (TeXShop) (maybe I just don't know any nice ones on windows).
    • Native ssh support (although as I understand, this was solved in windows also).
    • Unix based and subsequent terminal.
    • Ecosystem: It is really nice to have everything connected.
    • OS: I really got used to the Mac OS (but I guess not that big of a deal). Also, Spotlight and an integrated dictionary are awesome.

If I forgot any glaring differences, please, let me know.

As I am a student, money is an obstacle, so I have to make some tradeoffs, which is why I am asking this (otherwise I would just max the MBP).

But my question now is, which one would you recommend? Or should I wait for a new generation of Surface Pro? Although that could take a while, I presume.

    Thank you!

Looking for an ultra thin gaming laptop to be able to move around.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 08:46 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around the 3000USD mark (maybe at most 3300). Looking to buy in the United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't really care for battery life but would like nice specs.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would like it to be light and thin. I'm a student so being able to fit in a backpack is a must.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 or 17.3

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Games like COD BO4, Rainbow 6 Siege, and programs like Inventor and Fusion360

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Preferably ultra/Max settings on most games but willing to go down for more FPS. 60 FPS solid is a must.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nice build quality.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Right now, what I'm looking at are the 2080 max-q or 2070 max-q versions of either the Asus ROG zephyrus GX701 or GX531 versions. I was looking at those because I heard that they get the best performance out of the 2080 at least for the size factor of the laptop. I'd mostly be using it on top of a table and probably with a mouse on the side as well.

    Looking for a general-purpose laptop (USA, $1000)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 08:31 PM PDT

I'm trying to pick a laptop that will fit my general needs (Homework, browsing, streaming, etc.) I have already put together a list of some I am interested in (here) but am open to suggestions for other laptops

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Up to $1000 (flexible), United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 doesn't interest me at all. Battery life is fairly important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would like it to be light and easy to carry around, but I don't want that to outweigh durability.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~13/14in.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Excel, Word, VS Code/Atom, and visual arts programs like Clip Studio Paint

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'd like to be able to play Minecraft on low/medium settings and have it function decently.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like it to be of good build quality and have a competent keyboard/touchpad. I don't care about it having a touch-screen or finger-print sensor.

    Thanks!!

Thinking of buying this custom laptop for work/programming

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 11:47 PM PDT

I'm on the market for a new laptop. My uses for it are work-related activities & programming in Java/C#.

I need something around 13/15 inches, light and somewhat portable, and a nice screen.

I do not intend to game on it at all.

I originally was going to go with a Thinkpad T480, mainly because I've heard a lot of great things about their build quality. But the spec of the machine is like to have (i7/16gb of RAM). Was quite expensive.

Then I started looking into custom laptops and came across this model from pcspecialst:

    https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/lafiteIII-15-red/

Speccing it out with what I needed was very reasonable, compared to other laptops I've lookup at.

    Chassis & Display

Lafité Series: Aluminium Chassis: 15.6" Matte Full HD IPS LED (1920 x 1080)

    Processor (CPU)

    Intel® Core™ i7 Quad Core Processor i7-8565U (1.80GHz, 4.6GHz Turbo)

    Memory (RAM)

    16GB Corsair 2400MHz SODIMM DDR4 (2 x 8GB)

    Graphics Card

    INTEL® HD GRAPHICS (CPU Dependant) - 1.7GB Max DDR4 Video RAM - DirectX® 12

    1st Storage Drive

    1TB Samsung 860 QVO 2.5" SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 550MB/sR | 520MB/sW)

    1st M.2 SSD Drive

    128GB INTEL® 760p M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (upto 1640MB/sR | 650MB/sW)

Are there any other laptops that are worth considering?

    Laptop protection software

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 07:54 PM PDT

Sorry this isn't for a laptop but rather an important software

I have recently purchased a laptop (Lenovo Yoga 730 15"), and I've never owned one before what so ever. My mother greatly dislikes Microsoft and refuses to even let me use the thing until I find a decent antivirus and data protection program for it. I've been told in comparison to other windows, that windows 10 has better defense against virus and data theft but I still don't want to risk it and my mother is just breathing down my neck about this stuff.

Any suggestions on a decent software(s) that are preferably cheaper (if possible) for my laptop are greatly appreciated

    Upgrade or Buy New?

I have a 64 bit Lenovo T510 with 4 GB of RAM and a 2.67GHz i5 Processor. Which makes more sense: upgrade to an SSD and/or more RAM or buy something new? The laptop is kinda heavy.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $400

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Either

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd like something lighter than what I have now

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -fill here, remove dashes-

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -fill here, remove dashes-

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -fill here, remove dashes-

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -fill here, remove dashes-

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -fill here, remove dashes-

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -fill here, remove dashes-
