Some kind of coordinated attack going on today? Posted: 02 Jun 2019 01:10 PM PDT Gmail is down/fucked up, YouTube is down/fucked up, Snapchat is down, and it seems like things are generally acting up. Checked the down status reporting site and everything spiked into the thousands around 3:00 eastern. Is this something malicious or currently known about? Seems like a pretty big coincidence. Edit: Some articles finally broke about 4 hours after I noticed it and posted this. The issue was Google's servers which in turn affected Gmail, YouTube, Snapchat, and Discord. Google is claiming it was an East Coast-specific problem due to "high levels of network congestion." I'm calling complete bullshit on that, it's just completely illogical that some random June 2nd would suddenly magically overwhelm their cloud servers. Something happened and they're not being fully honest with us. I've studied homeland security and this is kind of setting off a lot of alarms for me, "congestion" or not it was still a major event with potentially large security/safety and economic consequences. Edit 2: The photo which got attached to this from the CBS link is clearly a bunch of cop cars in front of YouTube after the shooting a few months ago, and I just have to say it's kind of fucked up that that's the photo they used [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2019 06:11 AM PDT This is an odd problem that I have been having on my computer ever since my friend built me a new PC several months ago. For some reason, it seems to happen pretty consistently. I will start up my computer, and it will be fine for however long I am on it for (which is usually for a while, since I play video games all day mostly). Then, if the computer goes into sleep mode because I'm not on it for a period of time, this issue will begin to occur, and it fixes itself with a restart. It might also sometimes occur whenever I start up my computer, but this is just what I've noticed. To elaborate on what happens in games, it is immediately noticeable, especially in online games. I'll be moving, shooting, building, and everything else at around 1.2x speed, and the server will realize that I'm moving too fast and teleport me back to compensate. This happens around every second. There is also a game that I play that doesn't have too good of an anti-cheat or something similar, so it doesn't teleport me back, giving me a huge unfair advantage. I looked this issue up, and didn't see anything on games running too fast, but about the clock moving too fast. Google said it could be an issue of an overclocked processor, so I set the clock speed to default yesterday, but the issue has still occurred to me afterwards. Also, I feel like this isn't really the issue since it doesn't happen 100% of the time. Basically, sometimes my computer runs everything at like 1.2x speed and fixes itself on restart. How do I fix this permanently? Edit: It seems that r/larrymoencurly was able to solve my problem. For those who don't want to scroll into the comments, I cleared the CMOS battery and that seemed to do the trick. Thanks for all the comments, this has blown up quite a bit. [link] [comments] |
How to tell if alarm was turned off. Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:10 AM PDT Basically I missed an exam which resulted in me being fired and because I was staying with my ex-girlfriend the night before, some friends and family have made the assumption that she turned my alarms off because I was due to leave the next day and she still thought it was possible that we would get back together and to be honest she is crazy enough to do it. This is my first post so I'm not sure where to post it but if anyone handy with tech knows if it's possible to look at an activity log on my phone (Samsung galaxy S9+) and see if anything happened between me setting my alarms at about 3.30am and me waking up late at about 10.30am then please talk me through it or leave another way to check if an alarm went off. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Battery started draining suspiciously fast, not gradual battery cycle wear. Posted: 03 Jun 2019 02:57 AM PDT I have a Mi Note 4 with MIUI 10.2 on it and all of the sudden the 4100mAh battery phone drains from 100% to 33% in the span of an hour (actually tested this with one background process which was Amazon Prime). Additionally, now the battery percentage seems to be flawed and the percentage doesn't rise above 94% regardless of how much I charge the phone and it shuts down at around 11%-17% instead of shutting down when it hits 0%. The device has a bit of a opening, the casing of the phone from the side where the power button lies has been coming off, leaving the insides exposed to air. I hope someone can help. Windows 10 D drive fills up every day. Posted: 03 Jun 2019 02:53 AM PDT Hi you clever people, even though I keep on deleting large files, my 2tb D drive keeps on filling up (here). Today it had only 15mb of space left! Have deleted restore points and run Malwarebytes to no avail. Any advice? BTW, I am not very tech savvy, so feel free to patronise and talk to me like I'm a kid. Edit: ran WinDirStat and got this [link] [comments] |

Understanding CrystalDiskMark USB speeds Posted: 02 Jun 2019 11:10 PM PDT I have a new USB drive and this is my first time testing using CrystalDiskMark. Are these speeds normal for USB 3.0? To account for caching/buffering or anything like that, I ran 32GB tests overnight for the 2nd test. It didn't seem to make too much of a difference. Compared to my old SanDisk Cruzer Glide (which is USB 2.0), the sequential read/write are faster but the random 4KB writes seem to be much slower. Is this normal? Edit: Additional info from comment. It's a normal USB flash drive. Product page here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RR88R5V/ I have the 64GB version of the exact same model from years ago except it was USB 3.0, the new one says 3.1 on it. Sequential speeds aren't too different but again, it doesn't match the random write speeds. I'm not too concerned, just curious if this is normal or indicative of an issue somewhere. Can a shutdown from battery depletion corrupt files that are moving? Posted: 03 Jun 2019 01:16 AM PDT Not copying, moving. I was moving about 50gb of files from one external HDD to another when my laptop ran out of battery, when I hooked it back up it had paused the transfer. I unpaused and it continued moving. Can this damage the files? Thanks in advance if anyone can help 🙂 [link] [comments] |
Monitor keeps switching between HDMI 1 and Analogue? Posted: 03 Jun 2019 01:12 AM PDT A little while ago I was moving my computer somewhere else. I didn't do anything that could damage it and everything is plugged in the exact same way as it was before. However, whenever I try to use it and I turn on the monitor it will just keep switching between HDMI 1 and Analogue without me pressing the button on the back on the monitor to switch it. The button isn't sticking or anything either. I don't know the type of monitor I have, all I know is that it's a Samsung and I have a Cyberpower tower. I'm not the best at wording stuff in the first place and it's also 4 in the morning as of typing this so if it's needed I can try and provide a video to show what exactly I'm talking about. Does anyone know how to fix this, or do I need to take it to Geek Squad or some shit to get it fixed? [link] [comments] |
Complete control of a LAN computer Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:51 AM PDT So I have a desktop and a laptop connected to the same LAN network. Right now the desktop is Windows and the laptop is with Arch Linux. I use the laptop as a server. I host a discord bot and a Minecraft server on it, and I'll maintain it daily. This setup works, but it is somehow inconvenient as I have to press the power button everyday(I reboot it daily), uses the laptop's physical keyboard to login LightDM and do stuff. The question is, can I control the laptop from my desktop completely? Wake on LAN + some kind of remote desktop? I don't mind wiping the laptop and reinstall another OS if needed. [link] [comments] |
I accidentally transformed my external harddrive to a recovery harddrive Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:50 AM PDT As said in the title, i accidentally chose the wrong harddrive i was supposed to transform into a recovery harddrive and now, all the data videos / photos are gone. Is it possible to revert the process and if yes how ? ( Sorry for my bad english ) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2019 09:46 PM PDT So the other day, while I was playing a game, my computer randomly gave me an error and shut down. When I booted back up, I couldn't sign in. My keyboard/mouse will get power for a couple seconds before it stops, and while there is power, it won't register any keys being pressed or mouse movement so I can't sign in. Running Windows 10 and an i7. Could it be PSU failure? [link] [comments] |
"HDMI no signal" when connecting broken screen to external monitor (ASUS) Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:38 AM PDT As title says, I am getting the message on the external monitor when attempting to connect it to my Asus GL502V. Not "no cable connecting". The screen is completely broken but the computer itself is still functioning as I can hear the system sounds when clicking random buttons. I have tried to fn+f8 (which is the function key to change monitor) both at start up, and after start up. The Asus has the option to disable fn key and allows the use of function keys without having to hold down fn first, but I am able to change my keyboard LED brightness with fn+f2/f3 I have tried to use Windows+p and then using arrows to change display option However there is still no signal to the monitor. I also have another Dell laptop which works fine with the monitor by just plugging in HDMI cable. The cables and monitor are brand new so they are working. If anyone have any suggesting and knows what I am doing wrong, please give me some advices!. Thank you very much [link] [comments] |
How to fix a shitty slow laptop? Lenovo Ideapad core i5 6200U , 256gb ssd, 8GB ram Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:37 AM PDT So i have a lenovo ideapad , it has a core i5 6200U (which i think is the problem) 8gb of ram, 256gb ssd The issues, just with chrome, opera and skype open i often reach 80 to 90% cpu usage. It doesnt have a virus, or malware, i have checked many times. Often the fan runs constantly and loudly, a common complaint in the lenovo forums, and the temp runs hot I took it apart, and applied some good thermal paste to the CPU and GPU, this brought temps down some, but didnt make the laptop any better Issues, sometimes when im typing the words will go across the screen a few seconds later, or delayed , cpu usage is always high just from a few apps I suspect the issue is the core i5 6200U is just a horrible processor, that probably isnt meant for more than typing office documents and watching some youtube. Trying to play 4k with VLC is almost impossible on this laptop Is it worth trying to do more to fix it? Or should i get rid of it , i think the problem is i did not buy a laptop with an H processor, instead the U processors are low voltage and unable to handle normal tasks? [link] [comments] |
Copying photos from old Mac to external hardrive Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:34 AM PDT Helping someone backup their data before a computer swap. The old PC is a Mac with "iPhoto Library", not the photos app. This doesn't seem to be backed up to iCloud so I'd like to move their photos. The owner doesn't care if they stay in this format of being in the library. When I "show package contents" of iPhoto Library I see a folder called masters with subfolders for dates - this seems to be what I want, are these the right files to copy over? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:31 AM PDT Anytime I do any CPU intensive tasks (like creating a backup of my phone or installing a game) the computer starts gradually getting slower and more sluggish until it just stops responding and completely freezes, in game my resource monitor and performance tab in task manager both show spikes in CPU whenever my fps drops for a few seconds. If there's anyway to diagnose the issue and fix it I'd appreciate it a lot as I am unable to do any heavy CPU related tasks on my laptop, I should also mention that I don't turn off my laptop very often I just put it to sleep for weeks at a time sometimes not sure if that affects anything. Posted: 02 Jun 2019 09:33 PM PDT Hey guys! So. my pc has not shown any of the following symptoms, ever, until I moved last week. Now, with my pc set up and on a new network (in case that's relevant) it has been exhibiting the following symptoms: I have a dual screen setup; one screen is ViewSonic the other is a Vizio M220VA tv I use as a monitor and have used for a few years, now. The speakers in the viewsonic is trash, and I don't have the budget, at the time, for some good speakers, so I have been using the Vizio speakersfor sound, if I don't have my headphones in. The first symptom is that when I am listening to something, YouTube, Steam game trailers, Spotify, etc, the sound will slowly, slowly get quieter and quieter and then louder and louder and suddenly sound like it's max volume. Craziest thing, is that none of the volume sliders have budged. Secondly, I am getting weird ass performance hiccups. Sometines, my whole system will "hiccup" and I will drop frames in a game or program, while any sound that is playing at the time of the hitch will make the horrid lockup "BRR!" sound. These events only happen for a split second, but they do occur enough for me to notice. Sometimes, my mouse will feel like it's in sludge and my keyboard will hold up for a second or two until the letters can appear on the screen. I've done hardware scans on my CPU, HDD, GPU and RAM, and they all appear healthy. I have done malware scans, and nothing. And my temperature is at a steady 40C while playing Dead Cells (which is the game where the BRR! and dropped frames are prevalent, as it is the only game I have played since I moved). I am not sure what to do next and what to check. I updated my Video Drivers and had to clear out some HDD space (it was at less than a gig this morning; I cleaned stuff up and now have a whopping 100 gigs! WOO!) What should my next steps be? Thanks all! [link] [comments] |
USB C Display Input "Switcher"? Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:28 AM PDT Good Morning! I recently got a "docking station" for work/my work laptop. My work laptop uses a USB C input and charging cord to make it display on my monitors. I have an additional laptop I use for getting client signatures that I would like to be able to switch between. I know I can just unplug the cord and plug it into the other laptop but I just wanted to see if there was any other way. Thanks and have a great Monday! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:27 AM PDT I have a lenovo p52s with an i7-8550U cpu in it. When I first got it, it breezed through tasks and the clock speed was usually well above 3 GHz (Usually at 3.8 GHz). Most of what I do is CAD or code related. I don't game much. The only time it dipped was when I started a simulation, and then it would hover around 2 GHz. I always use it when it's on AC and everything is set to give me every last bit of performance. For some reason, over the last few days I've noticed stuttering in some programs where the was no stuttering before. I attributed it to my imagination. But when I looked at my CPU's clock speed under task manager, it stayed at 1.99 GHz, never budging below or above 1.99 GHz no matter what. What happened? I can only think of an update ran over a week ago, but is that really it? Has Intel actually stolen performance from me? Now it performs the way it used to when it's on battery alone, only its plugged in. Is there anything I can do? Other Specs: 500 GB SSD, 32 GB of RAM, Quadro P500. Those things are performing normally. TIA. [link] [comments] |
Ethernet no longer working in Windows 10 Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:27 AM PDT I have a P52 running 64-bit Windows 10. Ethernet card model is "Intel Ethernet Connection I219-LM." I was messing with some settings and tried to bridge the ethernet and Wi-Fi connections (stupidly) and managed to make my ethernet no longer work. It doesn't recognize the ethernet cable in my laptop and when I attempt to use device manager to uninstall the driver, it does nothing. Same result with disabling it. Any suggestions? Sudden download speed reduction. Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:17 AM PDT Hey guys. I have a dell G7. I updated the wifi adapter (intel 9570 160MHz) from the intel website two days ago and the download speed suddenly tanked from 300Mbps to 8 Mbps. Upload speed more or less remained the same. I tried to rollback the driver but the rollback option is greyed out. So I downloaded the driver from Dell but it says "newer version installed". Wot do I do now? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2019 09:19 PM PDT About a couple months ago my prebuilt computer ran into a major problem with Windows not being installed properly so I had to manually reinstall my Windows 10 onto my C: drive. Everything worked well and went fine until I began reinstalling some games I was playing before the whole re-installation issue. Every file over 10 GBs knocked my WiFi adapter out once I hit about 4-5 GBs into the download. I've tried almost everything I could think of and this is my last resort. My WiFi adapter is "Realtek RTL8811AU Wireless LAN 802.11ac USB 2.0 Network Adapter." Solutions I've tried:

USB-C (thunderbolt3) dual 1080p 144hz setup posibilities? Posted: 02 Jun 2019 11:07 PM PDT Hi, I currently have a laptop (Asus zenbook s) with 3 usb-c ports with 2 being Thunderbolt 3 and I just wanted to know if it was possible to connect both my external monitors (benQ XL2430T) and run them at 144hz. Preferably with a single usb-c port? If so, in your opinion, what components would work best? thanks, K [link] [comments] |
Computer saying there is a mass storage device but there isn't. Posted: 02 Jun 2019 11:07 PM PDT So I was looking at my devices and my computer is listing a mass storage device, and it randomly disconnects and connects. None of my devices connected to my pc are storage devices (Keyboard, mouse, and external mic) I do have a razer blackwidow but no macros of any sort, could that be the issue? I've tried disabling it, reinstalling/updating the driver. This is going over my head, any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2019 11:04 PM PDT Sooo this is gonna sound dumb, my phone has no service (no bars, nothing but the 4g LTE next to where the bars would be at) but I'm able to play games, get on Facebook, twitter, youtube, email, and even google random facts. I can't send text messages though, this has never happened to me before and I am extremely flustered by this inconvenience. What's wrong with my data or my phone? (Oh and my phone isn't due till next week, my provider is MetroPCS. What I've tried doing was a manual reset, and I have no clue what else to do.) Edit: Forgot to throw in that I posted this off mobile (Same phone) with no trouble. [link] [comments] |
