Surface go + desktop vs 15” gaming laptop?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 06:56 PM PDT

I'm busy deciding between the A's is tuf fx505du (ryzen 7, 1660ti) or for a surface go and later buying a pc (probably 9th gen i5, 1660ti)

Which would you go for and why? (Do not account for peripherals apart from surface keyboard)

In search of a cheaper end, upgradable laptop.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 06:00 AM PDT

At present, I can only afford a $500-ish latop so I'm looking for one with specs enough to run light gaming and productivity (ableton, photoshop,...) but upgradable for when I have the budget to do so. Preferrably, the laptop should consist of a 8th-gen i5/i7 intel core CPU, GTX 1050/1050i/1060 GPU, 256GB SSD, 4GB RAM or above. I'm not concerned about the aesthetic side and not really knowledgeable about other specs info so those are the only requirements for now. Also, if the requirements are wrong/incompatible in any way, do point out and I will take note for when I purchase a laptop in the future. Thanks a lot!

EDIT: I've read the form in the sub rules so filling in some info

Country: Vietnam; A decent balance between good battery life and specs is ideal but if I have to go for one it'd be specs. Weight and thinness not important. Windows OS screen size 15-16" Running mainly Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, PUBG(I'm not sure about specific setting but not esport quality)

Are there any other truly convertible laptops besides the Surface Book 2?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 04:14 PM PDT

By "truly convertible" I mean that the screen is detachable and can be used as a tablet, but it has a real keyboard with a hinge rather than a keyboard cover that attaches magnetically. What I really want is something that functions just as well as a tablet *and* a laptop. Most of the time I will be using it as a tablet with a mechanical keyboard and mouse, but for casual sofa use and travel I need that laptop mode (and not some flappy keyboard cover that falls off easily like the one on my otherwise fantastic Eve V).

I would get a Surface Book 2 except that (a) it's expensive, and (b) it's lame that the screen doesn't have a kickstand for better usability in tablet mode. If I want to use it with my own keyboard and mouse, I would have to keep its original keyboard attached to prop it up, which seems kind of dumb. I mean why didn't they just build a kickstand into it?

So anyway, here's my wish list:

    • 12-13 inch tablet screen with integrated kickstand
    • keyboard that attaches to screen/tablet by an actual hinge
    • decent processor for basic stuff and occasional Photoshop/video editing
    • bonus for minimalist design and small bezels
    • not more expensive than the SB2

    Any suggestions? Thanks!

Grad student looking for light-weight, small laptop ~$500, US

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 03:42 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

    ~$500; US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life would be a great plus

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

The lighter and thinner the better. I'll have to carry heavy books everywhere I go and my last laptop weighted 10lbs. I would love a thin and light laptop.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

      Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A. As long as I can read on it or watch stuff without hurting my eyes. Small would be great as I don't want a huge laptop.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No, mostly school work and streaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-A finger print reader would be cool because I like my security, but not totally necessary.

-Reliable build quality is important because I'll be carrying it a lot around campus.

-I've mused with the idea of taking up digital art as a hobby but I imagine it'd be in my better interests to use a drawing tablet instead of a touch screen, but then again I don't know how good touch screens generally are on laptops.

-Also the memory doesn't have to be huge but preferably above 32-64gb.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

As the title says I need a good, reliable laptop for grad school. I'll mostly be doing school work and streaming on it, as well as general purpose.

    Thank you so much!!

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't know

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Does not matter

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. As long as it's not Mac

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I wish to try my hand at video editing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I will probably just download wizard101

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I want a good keyboard and want it to be a reliable computer

Hi everyone! Photographer looking for a new laptop in 2019

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 07:08 PM PDT

Hi there, I've come to seek advice about getting a new laptop in 2019. I've watched a handful of video reviews on the new 2019 Razer laptops, Dell XPS laptops, etc. and with so much awesome stuff coming out, I'm curious to see what you all would recommend.

My total budget is $2,500 ideally, but would be ok going up to $3,000 IF it's really worth it.

I don't care about the 2 in 1 form factor and good battery life would be cool, but not a necessity so long as I can get a few hours of use for when I'm on the plane.

Weight is semi important, but I'd say 4 lbs would be my max.

Thinness again is also semi important as well as I'd like to have it fit in my camera backpack.

I'm open to Windows or Mac. But would love to go with Windows if anything can compare to a MBP in my budget.

As for what I'll be using it for aside from browsing the internet, I'll be using Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and Capture One Pro. I have no interest in doing video work whatsoever. I do like to play video games and would love to connect the laptop to an external monitor to game on when I'm at my home base. As far as game go I only play League of Legends and Fortnite, nothing too intensive and no plans to play anything else. So long as I'm getting 100+ fps, I'll be happy. I don't plan on playing those games at ultra settings anyways.

Screen size ideally would be 15.6" as my backpack only fits up to that size and smaller screens aren't enough for me.

I'd like to have a 144hz screen, but color accuracy takes priority over all else. I don't care to have a 4k display and 1080p is good enough.

Since I'll be mobile a lot, I have externals to bring, but would like to have a 1TB ssd to minimize the stuff I bring around with me. I'd like to have something last me at minimum 3 years as well.

    Thank you all in advance!

Looking for an everyday laptop with some gaming

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 02:59 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000-$2000 (US)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. good battery life + good specs

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would prefer to be somewhat thin but its not too important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Preferably Windows, but not a Mac

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some gaming. On my current laptop I stick to games like crusader kings but I would like to be able to play games like Skyrim too (Currently play on console so I could always stick with that if this would make it too expensive)

Database managing (mainly on Excel). Trying to start using statistical software more (starting with R and python)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Definitely want good graphics but they dont need to be amazing. Dont need highest FPS

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Want a good build quality and would like touch screen but thats not 100% necessary. Would also prefer a good touchpad.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The laptop would mainly be for general use and definitely doesn't need to be very gaming intense. I work a lot with large databases in Excel and I've been trying to learn R and Python, so ideally it can handle these smoothly.

    Dell G5 or Inspiron 7000

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 06:44 PM PDT

    Hi,

I'm looking at buying a new laptop to replace my 10 year old Dell Studio.

I wouldn't be playing games but would I be better off getting a G5 instead of Inspiron? They're about the same price.

I need it for everyday use and for music/movies.

    Thanks.

2 in 1 for college? Going into Engineering

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 06:43 PM PDT

So I've been looking around a bit for a 2 in 1 laptop for college. I'm majoring in engineering, so the ability to use a pen with the tablet mode of my laptop would be very nice.

Budget: ~$1500 USD, can go more if it'd be a good upgrade

Weight and thinness: I'd like it to be rather light, but that being said I need it to be quite powerful as well

    OS: Windows

Screen Size: I wouldn't want to go below 13 inches, wouldn't mind larger

Program Necessities: I'm going into engineering, so I'm assuming I'll need to run designing programs like Solidworks

Gaming: Only light gaming, as I'll have my desktop with me as well... And if this laptop can run Solidworks it'll be able to handle the games I want

Specific Requirements: Good keyboard; I/O ports aren't needed that much, as I'll probably only have a mouse plugged in, if that; 16 gigs of ram would be very nice to have, or at least 12 so it could run Solidworks without dying

Finishing Thoughts: I've been looking around at a few 2 in 1 laptops and the Surface Book 2 has caught my eye, it seems to fit everything perfectly if I go with the i7, as that also gets me a good GPU. I also looked at the Spectre x360 as a friend was telling me about how much he loves it, but reviews online have made me wary. Any thought about a 2 in 1 no matter the brand that fits my requirements would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

home office and casually game with it

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 06:41 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $700 - 800 MAX, US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. don't really care about 2 in 1 but would like a good battery. I do want a quad-core preferably an i7 but don't have an issue with AMD or a good i5

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? don't want anything too big but i wont be ding a lot of traveling with it

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15inch max

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. mostly home office and web-surfing but I would like to casually game with it. probably going to play farcry, cities skylines and some others.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? casually game with it probably going to play farcry, cities skylines and some others.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? good quality, would prefer a back-lit keyboard (don't need multicolored), something reasonably future proofed so I don't need buy a new one every 3 or 4 years

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. been to two placed both recommended MSI GF63 THIN9SC257 and the GL63 I like the prices but especially the first one but I can't seem to find much on MSI's reliability. I currently have an under powered lenovo but haven't really had an issue with it. open to really any manufacturer that is not dell

    [US-NJ][$2000] Graphics/Design laptop w/ High Battery Capacity

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 06:13 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1500 to $1800 preferred, $2000 max; US-NJ
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life, 8 hours if possible
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important, function over form
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17 for traditional, 14+ for 2-in-1
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, Spine, maybe other design, graphics, animation software
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Laptop strictly for graphics work (got the big PC build for this)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Definitely reliable build quality (tired of laptops falling apart), be able to use the pressure sensitive functions in Photoshop (if 2-in-1), decent screen brightness and color accuracy (definite necessity), if battery capacity not able to be met then ability to charge and run via USB-PD battery banks
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Laptop is for my friend who wants to delve deeper into his professional design stuff. He needs something with enough battery life to last through conventions such as the Global Game Jam or artist alleys at anime conventions, where outlets are not always available. He typically goes for big 17" gaming laptops for this, but they just don't have the battery power he needs. I have had him try out my ThinkPad X1 Yoga with a Wacom pen, and he definitely likes this experience, but doesn't necessarily prefer one over the other. Also, in a perfect world, this laptop would be around $1500 or below, cause I know he has his wedding coming up, and can use as much of his budgeted money as he can keep.

    New Laptop for Undergrad

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 05:53 PM PDT

Total budget and country of the purchase:

    • $1500, give or take $150, USA.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?

    • Preferably touchscreen but it really doesn't matter, ~~touchscreen was pretty useful for wankin so I can't complain lul~~. Good battery life is preferred.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Laptop for College, so portable and not bulky. Preferably thin and sleek.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux

    • Windows, but I dual-boot Linux.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A

    • Anything from 13 - 15 in, wouldn't go above 15 or below 13.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Mainly programming related gibberish. I do some machine learning and image processing stuff so it takes a bit. Video game is not a priority, but preferably it runs.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • A reliable build is the most important since I'll be skrrrrrrrrrrrting across campus. Around 500 GB of storage. Not a must-have, but having more ports would be cool (usb, hdmi, minidisplay). Display resolution-wise, I wouldn't go above 2k as it seems to drain the battery. It would be nice if it also doesn't get too hot and burn my lap lol.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion

    • I've been using a 13in hp-spectre x360 for the past couple years in high school and it's been great, I love the way the keyboards feel. I've been looking at the new 15in hp-spectre, some honest opinions on the benefits and downside to another spectre would be greatly appreciated.
    • No gaming computer or super flashy laptops, don't want to whip out a bright orange laptop with glowing RGB keyboard lights in the middle of a lecture.
    • A laptop that looks good (?) with a bit of style (?) idk, the spectre was pretty good aesthetic wise.

    Laptop for University

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 05:37 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: United Kingdom, <GBP1500

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money and a respectable battery life for non intensive tasks

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly, more focused on weight than thinness, though.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14", 15" or 13" at a push

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD (Solidworks, F360), Lightroom, Factorio and other light-ish games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mid to low, 60fps. Don't mind downscaling.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and touchpad (gestures), the 2015 macbook pros were nice in that department. Looking for dedicated GPU if possible, or at least an iGPU with some grunt. Something that feels solid. 256gb SSD minimum, but 512 is also nice. A decent display, 1080p minimum and wide gamut. Not necessarily colour correct, but again the retina displays are nice in that respect.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't wanna be that guy with a gaming laptop in lectures, which is why I'm specifically avoiding that market. Something like a blade, XPS or thinkpad x is the sort of form factor I'm thinking. I will have a desktop that I can use for more intensive stuff (gaming) so the smaller form factor isn't so much as an issue, but I will travel a bit and having Lightroom with me is a must, as well as some light games. I'm trying to avoid Apple these days, and I haven't had great experience with Acer.

    Help! I need a laptop!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 01:19 PM PDT

I am trying to get my little brother a computer for his birthday.

I need a computer that can play Minecraft, with about three additional mods, without much lag.

It doesn't have to be anything fancy, but I'm not a very tech savvy person, so I don't know what to get.

My budget is $200 -$300, which I know isn't a whole lot, but I'm hoping there is something that fits these requirements.

Thank you, and if you know of a computer please contact me!

    HP Pavilion 15?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 04:42 PM PDT

Hey guys, I'm thinking about buying the HP Pavilion 15 core i5 8300h, it costs around $800 here in Egypt and the only alternative is the Lenovo IdeaPad 520 which is nowhere near as good. My only concern is about the Pavilion's single hinge screen, it look terrible for longevity and I don't plan on changing the laptop for sometime so I'm very concerned, what do you think? Should order the Pavilion from Amazon and take a risk or buy the Ideapad which has a 1 year warranty?

They both have almost identical specs (i5 8250U, 8GB RAM, 256 SSD, 2 in 1, 14"). I just want to hear your experiences with these models, or at least brands. Which one is better?

I am a business student (soon graduating), non-gamer, I use my laptop for number-crunching in Excel, writing in Word, to watch movies and browse the web. Photoshop occasionally.

    Pls help! Thank you :)

Super light stuff, like the Sims, Minecraft, Skyrim, and Dragon Age. don't need anything too extreme, medium-low settings at like 40 fps would be fine.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd like the laptop to last all 4 years so a reliable build quality is a must. A good keyboard is also important

I'm going to be a freshman in college for Computer Science next year and i'd like a laptop to last throughout college so a good build quality is important. I play games occasionally, and i like to write so a dedicated gpu and a good keyboard are also high on my wishlist. I was looking at either a Dell XPS 15 or a Thinkpad X1 Extreme but i think they might be just a little out of my price range. Thanks for all the help!

    Ultrabook, portable & budget

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 10:34 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    $400-$700

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    • Balanced with minimum requirements:

    • Good battery life (>6h, preferably more)

    • 8GB RAM (or upgradeable to 8GB RAM)

    • Quad core (ix-8xxxU or >= N5000)

    • SSD/M2 (or upgradeable)

    • USB-C charger

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight is important. Around or under 3lbs would be great. With weight comes thinness.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Linux/Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    12" to 14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    N/A, not required

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Acceptable keyboard. Robust build.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I was eyeing on the Acer Swift 1 with an N5000, but it doesn't come with 8GB (or upgradeable) RAM. Light, long battery, sturdy.

I could consider a Chromebook with the newer Linux support, but 8GB RAM is usually the deal breaker here (or 8GB comes with a high cost compared to alternative systems).

Looking To Buy For Schoolwork/Entertainment and Some Games, ~$500 budget range, USA

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 12:19 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy a laptop that I can primarily use for schoolwork mainly, some entertainment (Hulu, Youtube, etc.), and a little bit of gaming. I want to stress that gaming is barely a priority. So, while specs aren't too important, I still want something that runs smoothly. I won't be looking to buy for maybe one to two months and just wanted to start looking.

I'm in the US and my budget is around $500. I would be willing to go a little higher than that but not by too much.

Battery life isn't too important to me but something with at least about 5 hours would be nice.

Weight/thinness does not matter in the slightest to me.

    Windows as an OS.

At least a 15-inch display. Maybe bigger.

There are no particular programs that I need to be able to run.

A good keyboard and 2+ USB drives are desired.

I like the idea of something that could be upgraded sounds nice in case I did want to do more gaming in the future, but that's not entirely a priority.
