    Simple Questions - June 01, 2019

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 05:14 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Buying this second-hand gaming computer for $350. Is it worth it?

    Intel Core i7-4790k 4,00 GHZ

    ASUS Maximus VII Hero

    16GB DDR3 1600mhz

    Samsung SSD 256GB

    HDD 1TB

    Corsair PowerSupply RM750 plus gold

    ASUS Geforce GTX 970 4GB

    Corsair H60 water cooler

Fractal Design R5 Black Pearl with windows

A guy who has had his computer for seven years and gradually upgraded different part (the one mentioned above) is willing to sell to me for $350. Is it worth the price if I want to play the modern games?

It works, but I cannot explain why

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 06:44 AM PDT

So I recently completed a build for a new workstation in the lab. Everything went together smoothly, all parts seemingly functioning normally. Except, there's one device that I just can't seem to get to work properly. A USB 2.0 amplifier used for electrophysiology. I do the normal troubleshooting, from uninstalling the device, reinstalling/updating drivers, removed any power throttling/disabling, chipset, etc. Other USB 2.0/3.0 devices work just fine in the ports, so they seem to function normally. I even go as far to switch from the OEM Windows 10 pro to a standard retail version, all to no avail. At this point, I'm quite bemused. As a last ditch effort, I take a simple Sabrent 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub With Power Switches and plug that into the motherboard and plug the device into that hub.

Surprisingly, it worked. I can't explain why and haven't found any explanation online so far. Any ideas?

Hey guys, first time PC builder here! After much research, saving and nervousness, I decided to go ahead and build my very first gaming rig! I made sure that all the parts I wanted were compatible, got them delivered and went ahead with the build! Everything was going swimmingly, I made no (major) mistakes and handled everything with care, used correct procedure for static discharges, and got the rig built in a couple of hours. However, when I came to boot as a test, the motherboard lit up, RGB fans were spinning and lit, the CPU fan was working but the system isn't posting and the red CPU LED light is solidly on - meaning that there is either no CPU detected or its not getting power?

I have done a load of research on google and other forums and tried some fixes but none have worked - I tried reseating the CPU, I tried a minimal build on a test bench, I tried resetting the CMOS, I tried to flash the bios from a USB - NOTHING has worked and I cannot get the damn thing to post.

I'm beginning to think that either the CPU or motherboard were dead on arrival, as far as I can see there are no bent pins and the mother board is not damaged/bent or any visible issue?

I'm hoping some of you gurus out there might have run into this issue and will be able to guide me to getting this damn thing to work, before I go ahead and request a replacement for both from Amazon.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Intel Blender PC Build - Critique, Please!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 08:22 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I'm helping a friend build their first PC. They're not interested in gaming and are primarily going to be using Blender. Money isn't much of a factor, so I'm starting with a pretty spendy build and then I'll have some options for paring down if we need to. My friend is planning to use his existing 2.5" SSD, but I wanted to add an M.2 anyway!

I'm especially unsure about my mobo and GPU.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Bringing a desktop PC from the USA to Europe, please help!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 08:13 AM PDT

I'm planning to move to Europe to study as a college student in about a year. I would like to bring my tower along, disassembled of course. All of the parts were bought in the USA and the desktop has never left the country. I was wondering what the best way to bring the computer to the EU would be without having to pay a hefty import tax? I don't have many of the invoices anymore, and most of the boxes.

edit: I am specifically planning to travel to the Netherlands.

I was wondering if this cable here can be used to support both G-Sync with Nvidia and 144hz.

    Mobo heats up

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 09:01 AM PDT

I recently forced a chip that was supposed to be a wifi pcie card into a x1 pcie slot since it didnt fit. When I turned my pc on it couldnt detect the card. I shut down my pc and now it won't even turn on anymore. The psu works and all (did paperclip test) but when I power everything on, no fans spin, there are no indications of power from the mobo as well (it doesn't have LEDs for that). In fact I feel the mobo heating up and thats about it.

Has the mobo died or smth due to a short? Because it shouldn't be heating up this way otherwise right?

Any help from the advanced builders out there would be appreciated, thanks!

Completely shutting down pc takes 15-20 minutes

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 09:23 AM PDT

So a week ago i was having problems because i was gettting static shocked by my pc, probably about three times, before i asked this subreddit for solutions, which is nice because my pc isnt shocking me anymore.

Now ive got a new problem which is my pc taking too damn long to shut down, basically takes about 7 minutes for the software to go off ( by that clicking the shut down button in windows) and about 13 minutes for my system unit to cease functioning (like for the case lights to go off and the processor fan to stop).

Specs Ryzen 5 2400g Msi b450 mortar Coolermaster mwe 500

Edit : forgot to add, i have no ssd only have two hdd which are western digital caviar blue 1tb and a 500gb

    My 2019 PC Build on a semi-budget. Any Suggestions/Changes?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 09:17 AM PDT

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bxN6Cb

Hello, this is my list of what I plan to build in the following weeks. Before I order anything, id like to get some feedback on what I selected before making the big leap. In this system, I am planning to use it for video editing/photo editing/gaming, hence why I am looking at getting a 9th gen CPU. I already have the GPU and Power Supply that I plan on using in the new system if I can (which is included in the list).

I am not sure about the cpu fan and motherboard. Are there any alternative options that are better for the relative same price? I also welcome any other feedback that is offered. Thanks!

Was given a i5-6500 for free and am looking for a MOBO and RAM to go with it

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 10:26 AM PDT

My friend gave me an old i5-6500 fresh out of the box and never used. It looks like a significant upgrade from my Athlon 860k, but ill need a new motherboard and some DDR4 ram. Since its a 6th gen chip im having some trouble finding a board that will work with it. Does anyone have any recommendation on a $100~ MOBO that will work with my i5-6500, and will any type of DDR4 RAM work with it?

    SHE LIVES!!!

So, a couple of months back, I came in to ask some questions, seek some opinions and get some courage to actually build a desktop for the first time.

Well, lads and ladettes, she's complete. I streamed the entirety on my phone, and while it took me 3 hours, she booted first time! 🌟

I've done some OC to the processor, and a GPU will be making its way into it sooner or later, but just thanks to you all for the advice. Y'all are great 🎉

    Upgrading ram question.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 04:52 PM PDT

Quick question. I've currently got 8 gigs of DDR 3 Ram running at 1333 MHz, I would like to upgrade to 16 gigs. Is the preformance worth it to get 16 gigs of 2400 MHz? Or would I be better off saving my money and just getting another 8 gigs of 1333 MHz? I'll be using this PC primarily for gaming.

So I installed an NZXT Kraken G12 on a 2080 with a Kraken X62. Fits well, all was good, until I had to put it in the case (NZXT manta). The pump unit is huge and pushes up against the PSU shroud, making the card bend a bit. Is it fucked?

Play Devil's Advocate and Explain Why Ryzen 3rd Gen Might Not Meet Hype

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 04:43 PM PDT

Looking to make an upgrade from a Z87/i7-4790k@4.5ghz/DDR3@1600mhz to Ryzen 3700x/B450/DDR4@3200mhz (going to keep my GTX 1080) depending on reviews and benchmarks when it drops, however I'm still wondering about a couple of things.

Are there any signals that Ryzen might not deliver the hype? It is a lower clock speed, but the IPC has improved, and I saw this post comparing just a 3600 to 8700k on geekbench, but I don't understand any of the internals of most benchmark software. Where should I watch out for marketing traps?

    Low FPS

    Posted: 01 Jun 2019 08:32 AM PDT

I jut recently made some upgrades to my pc but my FPS have gone down since then. I'm running an i5 7500, gigabyte b250m motherboard, rx 580 8gb, and 16 gb of ram (4x4). My ram is only 2133 MHz which I know is on the slower end of ram but I don't think my motherboard supports much faster ram. Before my upgrades I was running the system with a 1050 ti and 8 gb of ram (2x4). Ever since I have changed out these parts I can't run any games on high settings without drops in FPS and the game looking like it's lagging. I have already turned off the Radeon chill and turned off the v sync. Just wondering if any one has any advice. If case anyone is wondering about the games I have been playing I really only play WoW, rb6 siege, and just recently started playing apex legends.
