Please help me to decide between these laptops

    Posted: 29 May 2019 02:01 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm looking into replacing my old lenovo y50 with something that has a nice mobility factor (weight, size), 15 inch display, good performance for the main purposes of programming including game dev (not super demanding but rather small indie projects), productivity and occasionaly gaming.

I've narrowed my search into these 3 models, to give you an example of what I'm looking for:

Dell XPS 15 9570 with i7-8750H, 1050Ti. (seems to suit me the most but I've read some bad things about the build quality and problems with overheating and sound, also this one is the most expensive, has great reviews).

Lenovo Legion Y530 with i7-8750H, GTX 1060. (heavier than the dell, but not that critical, also the cheapest)

Asus ZenBook Pro UX550GE with i7-8750H, 1050Ti. (reviews arent' great)

Would love to have your input, thanks :)

Laptop for Programming, College, light gaming.

    Posted: 28 May 2019 04:48 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: about 1000 euro, EU (Czech Republic)
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't care about 2 in 1. I'd like to have a good battery life, 6 hours minimum.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'll be carrying a laptop around. 3-4 lbs (less than 2 kg)
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, probably Linux in the future
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14", can do with less, can't do with more.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Programming, Web development, Game development (might work with the Unity Engine), occasional light gaming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Dark Souls Remastered, Hollow Knight, Warcraft 3, various Indie Games. I want to have stable 60 fps, I can go lower settings if needed.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I want a really solid keyboard, good build quality. I don't need touch-screen, finger-print reader would be prefered. I don't want any optical drives. Touchpad should be decent. HDMI and USB-ports are a must.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm planning on using this computer throughout my Computer Sciences' College degree. Having the ability to do light gaming on the side would be quite nice. I want a light notebook with an IPS screen, a good keyboard for programming, 8 GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Dedicated graphics card might be nice if it doesn't ruin the battery life too much.

I was thinking about getting Acer Swift 3 with i7, mx150, and 512 GB SSD. What are your thoughts? I'm open to any other recommendations :) Also, is a dedicated graphics card worth it in your opinion when it comes to programming? Thank you very much for any responses!

13 vs 15 inch student laptop with some gaming

    Posted: 28 May 2019 02:53 PM PDT

    Hey there!

I am a senior student in search of a laptop and can not decide on the size I need. I am not sure if I am ready to sacrifice Portability and weight for better performance and larger screen. Maybe those of you who have already made the choice could help me out.

Recently, I have been reviewing laptops like Dell xps 13 or 15 Msi ps 63 Zenbook s13 Razer blade stealth.

However my ideal was HP Spectre x360 15'. My heart leant towards it. 1050 ti max q allowed enough space for gaming and the design is just phenomenal. I almost got arowsed by it. However after reading reviews and watching YouTube, it does not look as good as I thought. I love everything about it but the display (wobbly, big delay) and track pad (not running windows precision and having large dead zones), which in fact appeared to be the dealbreakers.

Now, I am not even sure about the size. As I thought 15 inch chassy gives room for better gpu and larger screen ( which I need for gaming and writing papers split-screen). However, the weight increases a lot. 0.5-1 kg difference might play a big role.

All in all, I hope you guys could change my mind on HP x360 or maybe give your opinion on the other laptops I listed above. Just in case I have missed something in the market, I have attached the form below so you guys could suggest me something else.

Total budget and country of purchase: USA, preferably up to 1500$

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 is preferable, and battery life of no less than 6 hours

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Will be carrying it around the dormitory, and travel a lot

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I want some gaming capabilities. Nothing extreme, but it would be great to run upcoming FIFA, APEX or me-settings PUBG smoothly (60+ fps)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? ^

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would lime to have a good, big TouchPad, and the keyboard is a must, as it is going to be my last year in university. And of course, I want it to look good. Additionally, it would be great to have at least two USB-As. Finally, I would love it to be as lightweight as possible.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The Acer E15 with MX150 and SSD, do you really need the Acer Caddy?

    Posted: 29 May 2019 03:42 AM PDT

    https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-E5-576G-5762/dp/B075FLBJV7/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=acer+e15&qid=1559126418&s=electronics&sr=1-3

I noticed that this Acer has a free 2.5 SSD/HDD/SSHD slot cuz it already has a m.2 256 GB SSD in it but I wonder...

The Acer laptop caddy on the Acer website is 8 dollars, but I hail from Hawaii so it is 50+ dollar shipping when I check out...

Do I really need the Acer caddy to fit in a 2.5 SATA3 SSD in it? Are there alternatives or solutions to add the 2.5 SSD in the Acer E15?

Questions on the Acer Aspire E15 for Gaming

    https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-E5-576G-5762/dp/B075FLBJV7

    1. Can this run Fallout 4 well on low-medium settings?

    2. How hot does the E15 get while playing Fallout 4 on low-medium?

    3. In case the 256 SSD is too small. Can I plug in a external SSD (Samsung T5), and is there a way I can specifically download Fallout 4 on the external SSD to play off of it?

I do not intend on using the E15 for any more demanding games than F4. In fact I want to strictly limit myself to 2D games or Visual Novels and such. F4 is the only exception. I actually wanted this to work on Ren'Py, that's all, but my older bro wants to play on it to play Fallout 4.

A quality laptop for typing/writing and web surfing

    Posted: 28 May 2019 10:32 PM PDT

    Updated from this post.

I made some changes due to budget concerns and re-assessing my priorities. Backlit keyboard not important anymore given they seem to be rare on the cheaper machines. SSD is more important. The size of the SSD can be the smallest available; 128GB.

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

USA - $600 (flexible) with extended warranty.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life would be nice but I plan to be using it where I can plug it in a lot.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not that important. I will mostly use it on a desk or coffee table.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Decent size. Probably 15" but I am not adamant about it.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Not planning on it. No. I have a desktop for that stuff.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good quality Backlit keyboard. SSD Drive.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Long or extendable warranty. Good reliable build quality. SSD would be nice.

I plan to type, surf the web and watch videos on this thing. Anything else isn't necessary.

    Gaming Laptop Suggestions

    Posted: 28 May 2019 07:31 PM PDT

Hello, I'm trying to get into pc gaming but as someone who's going to be going to college in a few months I'll need a labtop and won't be able to get a full on pc set up. What are some recommendations you guys have for good gaming laptops around the 1,500 dollar range. It dosen't need to be a super computer or anything, something that can just run simple games like overwatch and rainbow six siege. Preferably if it's a model Best Buy has that'll be best because that's really the only place near me that actually sells gaming laptops in person.

TL;DR I need a gaming labtop pc for around 1,500 for college.

Opinion on HP Pavilion 15 Ryzen 5 3500U

    Posted: 29 May 2019 01:22 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

i wanted to ask your opinion on this HP laptop: https://www.notebooksbilliger.de/studentenprogramm/notebooks/hp/hp+pavilion+15+cw1104ng

What i like about this laptop is the Ryzen 5 3500U, the M.2 SSD, 8GB RAM, low price (as a student and in combination with a coupon i only pay around 400€), partly aluminium chassis and AC WiFi. But i just don't know, whether i should buy it or if there is a better alternative for the price available.

Looking to buy new laptop - mostly all rounder, but emphasis on sound production/live music ($2500 AUD [$1750 USD], Australia)

    Posted: 29 May 2019 01:17 AM PDT

I'm looking to buy a new laptop ( questionnaire at bottom). I need it principally for music production and general use. I run ableton and I max it out completely - live VSTS, many midi programs, lots of effects. I'd like to run more than I currently can, and at any given time it will be processing musical instrument fx, inputting midi from a keyboard, outputting midi to another instrument, etc etc. This means it's also going to be moved around a lot and used live, so compact + durable is a plus, and happy to choose some lower specs that still run what I want for the smaller size.

It's possible I'll be using it to also do some video work too but this isn't certain so not as major of a factor. The laptop would also just be for casual use for work (basic word processing, data analysis etc). So the only factor here is, smaller again is ideal,

Some history:Currently running a Dell Inspiron 7559 (Intel Core i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz, 8gb Ram, Windows 10 home) which is pretty much on death's door. It's served me pretty well, but can run a bit slow occasionally when I max out programs. I have encountered many issues with its bloatware and windows 10, as well as the shell and hardware. Stuff that appears to be like a memory leak, sound issues, whole ranges of stuff. It seems to be the norm that people these issues with laptops but I am absolutely sick of spending hours just figuring out some basic issues that seems to ship with the PC. That's neither here nor there, but I guess a reliable computer with limited known issues is desirable...

I was recently recommended a Lenovo Carbon X1. It looks pretty nice and has a lot of good specs, but my only concern is the standard videocard, which would render me unable to play a games/limit video production should I try (I imagine).

Total budget and country of purchase:

Melbourne, Australia. Prefer 2-2500AUD. Absolute max, $3000 for the perfect, long lasting machine.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

In order of importance - Best specs, battery life, 2in1. However all would be great in ideal circumstance.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not hugely important - but as I want to use it for work, I'm prefer a smaller one that's a little less powerful (assuming it can still run my programs).

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Large preference for Windows, would be willing to use mac.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Largely indifferent.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

The most heavy use would be for sound production (Ableton, virtual instruments, Midi). I can imagine video editing and casual gaming could come into it, but they are not priorities at this stage. If I were to perform video editing, premiere pro would be used, as well as other unknown live video production tools.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Game infrequently/casually. Happy to run newer games on lower settings if I play. This is tricky, because if a perfect machine that ticked every box except gaming came into it, I'd take it. To me gaming is an optional luxury.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I have no specific requirements listed - i like the idea of a touch screen and would be pretty happy with one.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am not hugely fussed about looks, design, or other little features - however as it's used live in music, it gets moved around a lot so something with a bit of durability would be fantastic.

All extra features, e.g. a touch screen, or super high res screens are not hugely important to me. I'd like to have them, but the main purpose is a laptop that can run me maxing out a bunch of music programs and is also just a nice little workhorse for doing work stuff (e.g. mostly just documents, presentation, data analysis). The stuff is all just extra but optional fun.

    Thank you so much!

Laptop for programming and web browsing

    Posted: 28 May 2019 09:27 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: about $500-750 CAD, Canada.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't care about 2 in 1. I'd like to have a good battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very thick or heavy, I'd like it if it looked thin/sleek and not chunky.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" to 15.6".
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Programming, Web development. Hardly any intense gaming. No CAD/video editing.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would like to be able to play csgo sometimes, maybe Age of Empires. Not GPU intensive games, especially csgo which is very CPU dependent.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd like a good, solid keyboard. I don't need touch-screen, finger-print reader would be nice but not required. No optical drive, would make the laptop thicker. Touchpad should be decent (using Windows precision drivers) and fairly spacious. Don't need HDMI/SD card reader at all. Nothing below 1080p.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm planning on using this computer for my Computer Sciences degree in college. Mostly just want a smooth experience and no slow downs, so a good CPU is a must. I have a spare 256GB SSD at home so I don't mind if the laptop only has an HDD (provided I can add an M.2 SATA SSD in addition to the HDD).

I have no issues buying refurbished/open box, or even used if it's somewhere I can return if it turns out faulty. I've never bought used and I don't know if buying used from a person is worth the hassle of making sure everything is working.

Help a student decide between two laptops; or suggest something else

    Posted: 29 May 2019 01:01 AM PDT

    I'm deciding between two laptops:

Lenovo Yoga 530-14 (81EK00YRSC) Specs: OS: Windows 10 Home, Display: 14.0" AntiGlare IPS Touch, Resolution: FullHD(1920x1080), CPU: i3-7020U(3M, 2.3GHz), RAM: 8 GB DDR4, SSD: 256 GB, Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 620, 1x USB-C, 2x USB 3.0, HDMI, CardReader, Battery: 4-cell

    and

    HP Pavilion x360 15-cr0007nm (4TY77EA) Specs: OS: Windows 10 Home, Display: 15.6" TouchScreen, Resolution: 1920x1080, CPU: Intel Core i5-8250U (1.6- 3.4GHz, 6MB), RAM: 8GB DDR4, SSD: 256GB, VGA: Intel UHD 620, WiFi, Bluetooth, 2xUSB3.1, 1xTypeC, HDMI, AUX, SD card reader, Battery: 3-cell

Both are great as I see, the Lenovo is 14" and 1.6kg and HP is 15.6" and 1.98kg. HP has better specs (i5 vs i3 in Lenovo) but I'm not sure if the size and weight difference would make it difficult for mobility with it? I also read that this model is loud, which I can't stand since my old Asus sounds like a jumbo jet.

Any experience, advice, suggestions? Thank you!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 800€, Southeastern Europe

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 would be preferable, battery life should be good, and I need speed!

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Important since I like to carry my laptop around to uni and while traveling.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" - 15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Frequent use of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I am not a gamer at all. Mostly I use Excel (a lot!) and Word.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touchscreen and backlit keyboard. Everything else is a bonus.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I read pdf books a lot, so I assume I need good screen resolution and a touch screen would be really handy.

    Acer zenbook 15 UX533FN

    Posted: 29 May 2019 12:52 AM PDT

    Netherlands, 700-900 euros

Been looking for a nice working laptop that I need to carry every day.

Was looking at dell XPS (own a XPS 13 for personal use) but they are outside my budget. The new Inspiron 15 7000 or Vostro 15 7000 are looking good too but right now there are no sales on them. Would this Asus be a good pick?

Most of my work is office and chrome, but I do like to have a lot of stuff open. Battery life is not extremely important. I will have a docking station or external keyboard, but not all the time, so a decent keyboard and track pad is also important.

There is a sale in the Netherlands right now I would like to partake in: https://www.bol.com/nl/p/asus-zenbook-ux533fn-a8025t-laptop-15-6-inch/9200000102516294/?suggestionType=browse&bltgh=uEEOaNqDY763Zjm5MBpHSw.o1P4u72oVid2ExNAG59Lng_0.5.ProductPageUrl

I am not sure about the glossy screen though....

Any insights or reasons not to buy this? Thnx

Total budget and country of purchase: 900 euro, Netherlands

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 is cool but shouldn't come at the cost of anything else. Best specifications is the most important thing in this list.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Important. Need to carry it in my backpack every day, but do need a 15 inch.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inch

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run no fancy programs.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I will use an external keyboard some days but other days I will work without one so keyboard and track pad are important. Build quality is semi important, it is for office work and I am very careful with my electronic devices. I have a sturdy backpack. Would be a nice bonus if it can sent 4k to my TV since I have no computer that can do that ATM but that is more of a bonus.

Sorry about the crappy formatting. Am on Mobile.

Work in TV and need a new Laptop

    Posted: 28 May 2019 08:46 PM PDT

I think it's finally time for a new laptop. I currently have a 2009 Macbook Pro and can't upgrade it anymore. I work in Post Production on TV shows. My job mostly consists of reviewing video and flagging anything that needs to be sent to VFX. Almost everyone in the industry uses MAC but I wanted to see if it's possible to make a change. The most important thing is that I'm able to read MAC formatted drives. MacDrive was recommended but I'm not sure how reliable it is.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best Specs for the money. Battery life is a plus. I will have this connected to a monitor when I'm at the office and take bring it with me while dropping in VFX.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 or Mac

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 or 15

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Reviewing video, some photo editing, Light to moderate gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Overwatch/Master Chief Collection. Light to moderate gaming. 60 FPS is ideal

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and touchpad is a must. Ports are somewhat important but understand if I have to buy an adapter.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm planning on buying the laptop by August of this year. Need a solid work laptop that will last me a while.

Please help me decide between these 3 gaming laptops. Price range ~$1,400.

    Posted: 28 May 2019 08:12 AM PDT

Hello, I am currently in the market for a gaming laptop and am seriously considering these 3 laptops. The PowerSpec one is intriguing since it has a 2070 at a good price range, but I have not found a ton of reviews for it, so seems a bit risky. Not sure how big of a jump in performance the 2070 is compared to a 1660 Ti. Also, the HP and Acer have the newer 9th gen Intel CPU, while the PowerSpec has the 8th gen. Again, not sure how big of a difference that is.

    Thanks!

    PowerSpec 15 - $1,400

    HP Omen 15 - $1,000

    Acer Predator Helios 300 2019 - $1,200

Edit - Are there any other gaming laptops I should consider as well?

    Laptop for uni

    Posted: 28 May 2019 10:16 PM PDT

Hi! It's my last year of highschool, and I will be moving away for university, and don't want to carry my big-ass pc constantly when I travel.

I already asked this question in r/pcmasterrace, and had a healthy discussion, and right now I'm pretty set on Asus' Rog GL503GE.

But, I'm here to hear your opinions. My preferences are: •Be comfortable for long periods of time, as I intend to write code on it. •Be able to run stuff like League of Legends, and GTA 5 with 60 fps on at least medium. •I'm a dumbass sometimes so if it's durable ot would be great. My budget is around 800$, but can excceed it a bit.

Pretty curious how you guys see it, compared to the PC brigade.

Long time MBP user looking for best mobile workstation to run Linux for Programming, Gaming, Machine Learning, etc. $4,000 budget.

    Posted: 28 May 2019 10:15 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA USD $4,000
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Looking for something similar to a MBP, could be a little bulkier.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming (cities skyline, KSP), machine learning, programming (compile time important)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 60+ FPS
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch-screen not required, would like high res display > 1080p. Good keyboard and trackpad/pointing device.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have used a Mac since 2003. I am tired of waiting for Apple to fix the MBP. I mainly use my machine for programming and some heavy GPU tasks like Gaming and ML. I am very overwhelmed with all the choices in the the non-Apple world. What would be the best mobile workstation for me? A few other nice to haves would be not having to pay for a Windows license, a matte display, HD webcam, thunderbolt 3

    not super important

    windows

the bigger the better. Not under 15 inches

I do use cad for engineering and a lot of heavy coding processes for data analysis and visualization. For games I'd also like to run minecraft. LOL. And some other lighter games like warframe.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • see above*

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

reliable build is most preferable. Last laptop I bought was a Dell xps which I loved until the battery expanded and made the trackpads completely stop working. After warranty of course. I'd like a good keyboard and trackpads

    • I code a lot with c++ CUDA and python . The programs get a bit heavy so decent ram and a good processor and graphics are nice.*
