Does having your Laptop Constantly Plugged In when Fully Charged Harms your Battery?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 10:55 AM PDT

As the title says Does having your Laptop Constantly Plugged In when Fully Charged Harms your Battery or reduces the lifespan any faster?

Is it a bad idea to do so because I plan on using a budget Laptop as a Main Stationary PC so I'm curious if it'll harm the battery.

I don't remember where I heard this from.

    Thanks!

Is the Legion Y530 a decent gaming laptop? For the price ($750 at best buy) it looks very good, all i really want to play is games like ravenfield, some fallout, and skyrim.

Open-box MSI ge63 Raider slow, freezing, and glitchy upon startup

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 01:33 PM PDT

I'll preface this by saying I'm incompetent as fuck when it comes to computers, please ELI5 & thank you in advance for any advice.

I just received an "open box" MSI GE63 Raider RGB-012 (and just in my three hours of owning it, I've had a decent amount of problems. It definitely looked to be in new condition, but it has frozen up several times while performing basic tasks (downloading chrome, changing RGB settings, setting background) and sometimes won't unfreeze until I force-restart the laptop. if I left-click my desktop background to bring up options there, it won't work and just stays on a little loading circle. There's some bullshit games (candycrush, cooking fever, etc) pinned to start that I can neither remove nor open. Performance according to the MSI center looks fine to me, but with 30% memory usage just using chrome and spotify.

I was given the impression that the 128GB M.2 SATA SSD that came in the laptop is shitty, so would replacing the SSD help at all?

Terrible experience with HP customer support - Spectre X360

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:30 AM PDT

Just thought I 'd share the terrible customer support experience I had with HP for the benefit of others.

I recently ordered a Spectre X360 15 (2019) from the hp.com store. I got the base model, as I was planning to upgrade the ram and SSD myself later. I checked the repair manual for the model I bought at hp.com before I ordered and it noted that the ram and SSD was user replaceable.

Turns out that the ram and SSD, while upgradable on the 2018 model, are not upgradable on the 2019 model. I only discovered this fact reading reddit posts about the Spectre X360 a few days ago.

The laptop is supposed to be delivered today, and I have not yet taken possession. I called HP to tell them that I wanted to return the laptop, and they are insisting on charging me a 15% restocking fee. I told them that I would have ordered a different version with upgraded ram and ssd if their own manual had specified that the parts weren't user replaceable, and they offered to waive the fee only if I ordered an upgraded version.

I would have done that if they weren't holding me hostage over this restocking fee. It adds up to about $250 bucks, so it's not nothing on a laptop with a base price of $1599.

Anyone have any advice for me? Such a frustrating conversation with the customer service rep AND her manager!! I thought buying direct from the manufacturer would buy me some goodwill but they were incredibly rude to me. Very disappointed.

I have a gibgabyte Aero 14. My sSD died. I am looking for advice on replacing it.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 09:26 AM PDT

    My laptop's specifications:

    https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Laptop/AERO-14--GTX-1060#sp

I opened the back of my laptop to see the shape of the connection and the SSD so here are some SSD's I am looking at based on that:

    https://www.frys.com/product/9455051?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

    https://www.frys.com/product/9455021?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4RE8NY2815

    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167460

So a few things to note:

-I use the laptop mainly for gaming (think Witcher 3, Apex Legends, etc).

So in terms of memory, I am looking around 500 GB (same as the old one). How do I know if its compatible with my laptop? What else do I need to know before choosing one? Clearly there are price differences between SSD's with the same memory size but different brand. Any advice is much appreciated.

Tired of Searching now looking for suggestions!

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 01:03 PM PDT

Hi. I've been doing my home work for a week and really tired of searching the ideal laptop. Here are a few specs I'm looking for:

I5 8th generation (preferable 8265u), 16 gb of RAM DDR4 (can be 8 but upgradeable), 14 inches FHD IPS, Matte, 500 gb SSD (or Hybrid SSD + HDD) Budget: Up to 1000, Discrete GPU if possible (not mandatory)

I loved Acer Swift 3 SF314-55 but has 8gb not expandable. Also was found ThinkPad E480 sold on Amazon but read a lot of criticism about temperature and throttling.

    Thanks in advance

    Laptop Recomendations for Scientific Computing

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 11:56 AM PDT

My ASUS Q302 finally died after 4 years of minor and frequent issues. I'm about to finish up in undergrad and while immediately, I won't be doing anything too heavy, I'm looking for a machine that can handle big programs like Matlab and ArcGIS that I could take to grad school later on.

I'm looking for a PC laptop that's relatively sturdy, has i5 or greater processing power, and ideally not a touch screen. I also like the ones with the matte or anti-glare (idk if there's a difference?) screens. I won't pay over $700.

Right now I'm looking at the ASUS VivoBook Laptop and a Lenovo Thinkpad, but open to other recommendations! (also if i'm wrong about what i need also pls tell me that)

College student looking for a laptop for drawing, image editing, modeling and animating, preferably around the 700€ mark

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 11:23 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:*\*

I'm from Portugal, looking for a computer at around the 700€ mark.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\*

I'm trying to maximize specs here.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\*

I won't mind it if the laptop is heavy or too thick, as long as it doesn't make carrying it too much of an hassle.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\*

    Windows would be preferable.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*

No less than a 15 inches screen.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\*

Yes. I'd like the laptop to be able to run photoshop, adobe flash animate, gimp, blender, etc.

I'd like a laptop with , which is able to run . I'm also looking for one with good color quality, and a decent sized hard drive to store all my projects, although this might be less important, since I can always get an external hard drive.

I'll do drawing, image editing, modeling and animating with the laptop, as well as do schoolwork.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\*

If it can handle some basic gaming, great. It's not my primary focus though.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\*

It would be great if the computer had a cd reader, but that is not a priority.

8gb of ram would be great too. I want to be able to work and have music playing on youtube on the background at the same time.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\*

Battery life is not a concern. I doubt I'll be more than 3 hours at a place where I can't charge the computer. I am indifferent when it comes to the build quality too; as long as it doesn't feel like jelly, it should be fine.

Storing game files temporarily on external SSDs possible?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 10:19 AM PDT

I'm planning to buy the MSI GS65 Stealth from microsoft.com, but it comes with only a tiny 256GB NVMe SSD. The other SSD slot is too difficult to access and upgrade. Is it possible to have (Steam/any) games on an external SSD like the Samsung T5 and connect it and use it while gaming alone or copy the files when needed alone and store them in the portable SSD when not needed? The read/write speeds are around 500MBps (sequential)..

Also, to anyone owning this specific model (GS65 Stealth-047), how is the display? I heard it varies for different SKU's..

    Thanks in advance!

Lenovo Yoga 730 vs ThinkPad T580

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 09:39 AM PDT

I am in need of a new laptop. I have a 2012 13" Macbook Pro and a 2014 Fujitsu Lifebook that got me through engineering school. I have been wanting to get a MBP but I am so over Apple's inability to even produce a reliable keyboard let alone leaving the ports alone (I want HDMI native) that I have completely given up on Apple laptops. Originally I wanted another MBP so I could use Logic Pro X to produce music but I am so over Apple I am willing to use something else (and am not too invested in LPX). I used Windows 10 on my school computer (the Fujitsu) and it was fine. I am looking at either a Lenovo Yoga 730 or a ThinkPad T580. I am not entirely sure what the big differences are between the two as they can both be configured to have 16gb of memory and at least 512gb of storage (these are my minimum requirements). Can anyone make a recommendation? This laptop will be used mainly for casual browsing (I use a lot of tabs), may be used for engineering graduate work in the next 2-3 years, and of course music production. I already have a gaming rig that I built myself. I just can't justify the cost of a MBP anymore when they are so unreliable these days and I am tired of waiting for Apple to fix these problems (I have been waiting since 2016!).

Need help with finding a good laptop

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 09:01 AM PDT

Mainly for school, watching tv series and YouTube. My budget is around 700$. I like acer laptops but couldn't really find anything that seems good enough and isn't to expensive at the same time. I would definitely prefer something lightweight and portable. The last thing (might sound stupid) is that I really prefer laptops with thin plastic cases ( so the screen covers most of the upper part of the laptop. I would be very grateful if anyone could suggest something, Thanks in advance!

Looking for Desktop Replacement Laptop Suggestions!

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 08:29 AM PDT

Background Info: Built a custom PC 4 years ago with gaming in mind. Aside from Minecraft/Old School RuneScape, I don't game on my PC, I thought I would but all my friends and family play PS4 so I still game on console for everything else.

I want to either sell my desktop/setup, or potentially pass it down to a younger family member for things like Fornite on PC and things like that and get something that will work better for me. My thought, creating a desktop setup with one (possibly two in the future) monitor, wireless keyboard/mouse, and then a laptop so that I can use it from the comfort of my couch, or in a more traditional desk environment when I want to use a desktop sized monitor, and desktop keyboard/mouse.

My current computer use is mostly basic web browsing, very light gaming as mentioned previously, and Photoshop/video editing for YouTube as I do occasionally record Let's Plays of games I'm playing on my PS4 using OBS/Elgato HD60S so I would like the ability to still be able to do those things. Usually my videos are recorded and rendered at 1080p because my currently desktop really struggles with rendering 1080p 60fps videos, but if I could get a laptop that is capable of that, it would be great.

Based on this information, what laptop do you think would best meet my needs and make for a good replacement in terms of my current desktop that can still be attached to one or two monitors? I know I will most likely have to purchase a laptop docking station as well for my keyboard/mouse, my monitors, and lastly I do also have a DAC which I use with my headphones (Audio-Technica M50x, and Sennheiser HD 598).

TL;DR: Best bang for my buck laptop which can be converted into more of a traditional desktop setup with one or two external monitors, keyboard/mouse, and DAC all connected via a laptop docking station. I don't have a price point in mind, I want to consider all options.

    Thermal Issues?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:21 AM PDT

I have a 13 inch HP Spectre with the 8550u. I've been keeping it undervolted pretty much ever since I got it. However, even with the undervolt, it will frequently thermal throttle when opening chrome or starting applications. When plugged in to charge it will even hit 100 when doing things like browsing reddit. I know it is a slim form factor, but should I be alarmed at these temperatures/will they cause damage over time? If I have to, I could repaste it myself but it would be great if someone could link me a guide to help out.

Vertical Laptop Stand for LG Gram - Will there be any heat dissipation issues?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 03:38 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm creating a sort of laptop docking station at my desk, and I wanted to get a vertical laptop stand to keep the space clean and minimal. However, I've heard that you shouldn't do this with laptops that dissipate a lot of heat from the keyboard, because it'll screw up the screen and will make the laptop run really hot. Do I need to worry about this for the 14" Touchscreen LG Gram? Or can I just vertically dock it w/ no issues?

I obviously won't do any gaming on this thing, most of stuff is productivity (i.e. just a lot of CPU/RAM usage). Thanks! <3
