What do I need to rewire my house? Posted: 02 Mar 2019 07:24 PM PST I am looking to add CAT6 ethernet to my house, as there are currently no ethernet at all, besides where the modem and router are. I've selected a few things, and would like advice on if any of it is unnecessary, not good quality, etc. cat6 cable: $150 https://www.amazon.com/Listed-Cable-Matters-Copper-Ethernet/dp/B0049KWVCM/ cat6 outlet: $29 https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters%C2%AE-25-Pack-Cat6-RJ45-Keystone-Jack-in-White-and-Keystone-Punch-Down-Stand/dp/B00IO3HJGI/ mounting bracket: $14 https://www.amazon.com/Arlington-LV1-10-Low-Voltage-Mounting-Bracket-1-Gang-Black-10-Pack/dp/B003JQL0S8/ wall plate: $12 https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-10-Pack-Profile-Keystone/dp/B074HHDJWT/ crimp tool: $30 https://www.amazon.com/connector-Crimping-stripper-stripping-Upgraded/dp/B07513DH3P/ wire ends: $9 https://www.amazon.com/CableCreation-100-PACK-Connector-Connectors-Transparent/dp/B01K9Z4FT2/ wire ends: $24 https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-2-Pack-Cat6-Modular-Plugs-with-Load-Bars-for-Solid-Cables-100-Pieces-per-Pack/dp/B0072JVT0W/ punch down tool: $10 https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters%C2%AE-Punch-Down-Impact-Tool-with-110-Blade/dp/B0072K1QHM/ strain reliever: $6 https://www.amazon.com/CableWholesale-RJ45-Blue-Strain-Relief-Boots-50-Pieces-per-Bag-SR-8P8C-BL/dp/B000I20B86/ wall mount for connection from modem: $36 https://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-N250-012-12-Port-Cat6-Wall-Mount-Vertical-110-Patch-Panel/dp/B000HZES42/ ^ or $20 https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-12-Port-Vertical-Bracket/dp/B00UVQI8B6/ clips to hold cable to wall: ? Any router that uses a Linux distro (such as debian) that you can ssh into? Posted: 02 Mar 2019 04:12 PM PST Are there any routers that use Linux as their firmware? So I can ssh into it and manage things without having to flash a 3rd party firmware. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2019 03:05 PM PST My house is 3 stories. My internet is 400/20, but with ethernet on my desktop I get something around 480/22 Currently using a ASUS AC68P located on the 3rd floor, which gives me about 400/20 on the 3rd floor, about 280/20 on the 2nd floor, and then cuts down to 200/20 on the 1st floor. Would it be better to get a better router, or would a Wi-Fi mesh system be better? All the wifi-connected devices in my house are only used for streaming and SNS. If a Wi-Fi mesh system is better, what is the go to mesh system? Amplifi? Google Wifi? Eero? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Please suggest the firmware I need (too many options) / ASUS RT-AC66R Posted: 02 Mar 2019 05:49 PM PST I have an ASUS RT-AC66 router that I've been using for over a year. I noticed there was an available firmware upgrade and installed it. Now, the wifi drops out entirely, and the connections are sometimes really sporadic. I've tried a LOT of different things (limit to just 2.4 or 5ghz, try 20 instead of 20/40, factory defaults with manual set up from "new-router" mode, reinstalled firmware using the utility etc) I have a lot of devices connected to it (for a home setup), including the following: 2 PCs wired, 1 Server wired, 3 Laptops wireless, 3 iPhones wireless , 2 Apple Watches wireless, 1 Tablet wireless, 1 Xbox One wired, 1 Chromecast wireless, 2 Roku-3 units one wired, one wireless. I want to install a firmware, but I'm not trying to get more features, I'm trying to get better stability. When my router is working right (80% of the time, it is amazing!). But sometimes i'll just get a 1 minute drop and it self-resolves itself but its really irritating. Also there's no rhyme or reason to cause it to crash. It might do it at 7am when no one but me is using it. It might do it at 7pm when the whole house is using heavily. It doesn't matter. I'm investigating Merlin, AdvanceTomato, TomatoShibby, and DD-WRT. I don't think DD-WRT is the right choice. I'm also not sure if installing ANY new firmware will help because I'm not a network engineer and I don't understand how the radio hardware is affected by any of this. Please advise. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2019 08:25 PM PST As the title says. It's making my network unusable as both my network routing devices are DD-wrt and both are having the same issue. This is causing addressing issues. [link] [comments] |
Gigablast only getting 1 - 5 megabits? Posted: 02 Mar 2019 08:10 PM PST Got Gigablast, self-installed, only getting 1 - 6 megabits, instead of the advertised 1gb. I was getting at least 100 megabits a couple days ago. I called my ISP and they're sending a technician for Monday, could weather be effecting this? Just moved into this new house and they said no one's had their internet since 2017 here, would that effect it? It's also supposedly dual-band panoramic, but it has low range and I can only see one channel. BONUS question - IF I go to my sister's house, who torrents videos and crap. (I tell her it's wrong) and she has a virus, if I connect my laptop to her device just to download a few games, will I get infected ? [link] [comments] |
Question to anyone with a asus router Posted: 02 Mar 2019 07:42 PM PST I sent my RT-AC5300 into RMA, and I am wondering if MU-MIMO is enabled by default on the 5Ghz bands? I am thinking it could have been disabled the whole time. If my understanding is correct, I am only getting half of my internet speed. 300mbps/15mbps line, speedest shows ~320mbps on cable connection, around 150-170bmps on 5Ghz 802.11ac 80Mhz wifi. The device is 2x2 MIMO compatible and has 2 antennas, so theoretically my internet speed shouldn't be cut in half with mimo enabled, right? No other devices connected and no other wifi networks detected in the area during the testing, basically no interference at all. [link] [comments] |
Any new ideas? Trying to connect to network 2 KM away Posted: 02 Mar 2019 01:01 PM PST Been back and forth on trying to figure out a way to connect to a 1.5 gb/s network through the woods. In regards to using wifi directional antennas, I don't really have line of sight because of tall trees and not really able to afford a big 80-100 ft tower right now. Also a bit iffy about running a fiber cable as the heavy duty ones seem fairly expensive and even if I get them then I'm worried the animals will ruin them. Just wondering if there was any new technologies or if you guys had any suggestions or new ideas. Only thing I can think of to try this spring is to run a couple fiber cables on each side (maybe a couple hundred meters) and have them going to a directional antenna at a more suitable location (possibly mounted in a nice sturdy tree). Not sure if it will work but gotta try something. Sounds like some of the directional antennas can be powered over the cable so gotts try and figure out which ones I need and what kind of speeds/latency I can expect. [link] [comments] |
Looking for clarification on "cascading routers" and double-NAT/double-DHCP Posted: 02 Mar 2019 06:36 PM PST Goal: isolate my devices from the rest of my housemates AND make it easier to move my network from one location to another. Secondary goal: faster speeds between wired NAS and wired/wireless PCs Proposed Solution: use additional wireless router (192.168.2.X) as a personal network which is connected WAN-LAN over Ethernet/Powerline to primary modem-router combo (192.168.1.X) Context/Assumptions: * Using different SSID * Minimal or no ability to adjust primary router * Personal router is running Tomato based firmware and can do VLANs among other useful extra features * Personal router is in my room * Primary router is in common area * Router connection is over power line adapter (minimal interference I suspect) Do I disable DHCP on personal router or not? I don't want to use the router as an unmanaged switch — network isolation is the goal; portability and performance are ancillary. Thank you in advance. I just can't quite Google my way out of this. I have tried this before but as a repeater/relay with no success so I'm ready to go wired. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2019 06:18 PM PST Hello Reddit! So I am making my own at home network little by little. Today I added a Google Wifi pod and Im currently paying for Xfinity's modem. I also bought a lynksys 5plug switch to add more cables later on and make my own server as well. I have been toying with the idea to add a Pihole as I have 4 pi zeros and 3 RPi B+. I tried doing it one time but I found out I couldn't change the DNS. I found out that we could use Google to do that but I kinda want to have the wifi divided, if possible. So i would like the PiHole for the whole network but have the two separate Wifis. Could this be possible? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2019 08:15 AM PST My current router is an ASUS Tri-Band Gigabit (AC3200) router that is placed on the middle floor. I'd like to have ethernet running to the top floor as well as the bottom floor. There's currently an ethernet cable running to the bottom floor, but due to the placement of the router I cannot run a cable to the 3rd floor (if i move it to where I can run a cable to the 3rd floor, then I cannot run a cable to the first floor, lol). Is there any way to get ethernet in all 3 floors? My budget is <$150 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2019 08:14 AM PST I'm probably the least tech savvy person on reddit, so bear with me. I just installed xfinity cable and internet in my house and everything works fine. Only thing is I have a PC upstairs I use for gaming, but I HATE using wireless connection for gaming. I can't quite run an ethernet cable up the stairs and there isn't any of those ports on the wall where my pc is for any type of internet cable besides just standard outlets. I'm kind of hoping theres some magical device out there that can help me get a wired connection without running the cable through the whole house. I know it sounds dumb but someone told me xfinity has a device just for this. Thanks for the help. [link] [comments] |
Can't change DNS on Netgear C6300BD Posted: 02 Mar 2019 05:57 PM PST Hi, About three years ago I got Cox Home internet. Their customer service is awful, as is their "tech support". My emotions aside, I wanted to modify some router settings. When I first got the service and the router, a Netgear C6300BD (as well as their crazily overpriced 75 mbps internet service), I got to messing with some settings. I had previously flashed DD-WRT on multiple routers, and have experience with routers in general. However, at that point, I was unable to change the DNS settings on my router. It looks like this: https://giphy.com/gifs/u49M2IKZbwNUOtGjN5/html5. That is not my picture, its a picture from another thread that remains unsolved, but archived. I didn't consider it a big deal at that point, as I just changed my DNS on every device manually, but due to a change in circumstances, I now need to be able to change the DNS at the router-level. I have tried so much, including

Need help alleviating internet issues due to high traffic Posted: 02 Mar 2019 05:12 PM PST I live in a house with 3 other people. We pay for 100 mbps download speed and 10 mbps upload. I have Spectrum internet. Our router is a DG1670A72. There is quite a lot of traffic as we have 2 gaming consoles (1 for gaming and 1 for streaming neflix/hulu), 3 phones (I don't connect mine to wifi), and 3 Macbooks. This is the average number of devices on our network I would say. I lag terribly when trying to play video games online. I feel as though I should not have this issue considering the 100 mbps download speed (I may be wrong). Would purchasing a newer/better router alleviate this issue?? [link] [comments] |
Connecting an Xbox to a username/password university network Posted: 02 Mar 2019 04:07 PM PST I'm studying abroad in New Zealand and want to get my Xbox setup in the dorms here. Issue is the networks are protected with an enterprise username/password setup. They've banned all physical routers and there are no working ethernet ports. I have a 2018 Macbook Pro that I installed boot camp on to create a WiFi hotspot but the Xbox "cannot connect to the DHCP server". I tried changing the MAC address and that didn't work either. I bought Connectify for Windows 10 and every time I create a network my phone can connect fine but the Xbox says the password or network name is "incorrect". I'm thinking it might be the built in WiFi adapter. Is there anyway I can connect my Xbox to the internet using my iPhone (without data) or Macbook running Windows 10. Contacted IT department but they are not willing to help. Gold to whoever can help me solve this. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2019 04:04 PM PST Hey guys looking for a bit of help here. Directly connecting my pc to the modem nets me gigabit speeds, when I go Modem>Router>PC via Ethernet cable my speeds fall to ~500mb/s. Equipment is SB8200 modem, Asus AX88u router, cat6e or better cabling. It appears that the router itself is bottlenecking my speed. I have played around with the QoS but that hasn't helped at all. Same with the WiFi. PC is extremely high end so I doubt that is the issue. I have browsed through this subreddit looking for a some kind of solution that would enable direct to modem speeds and still have the WiFi I need for my 15+ devices. The priority is my PC by far. Is there some kind of simple hardware setup I need? A lot of the home networks I have seen here are Modem>router>switch>AP which wouldn't help me out too much if the router itself seems to be the bottle neck. I appreciate any help from you all, the networking gods! [link] [comments] |
Deliberately Delay Networked Printer? Posted: 02 Mar 2019 03:48 PM PST I have a bit of an unusual question for you all. We have a network-attached printer (an Epson Artisan 837) that we keep in a hutch upstairs, behind closed cabinet doors. The printer feeds out the front, so if it tries to spit out a document while the doors are closed, the paper jams. Therefore, any time somebody wants to print something, the options are to either make two trips up the stairs to open the doors and then print and retrieve the document, or print and make a mad sprint upstairs to try to open the doors before the paper jams. What would be great would be a way to introduce a delay in the process - say 20-30 seconds or so - to give a fighting chance to open the cabinet doors. Is there a way to do this? Every search result I've found on Google only offers tips to reduce a delay in printing. [link] [comments] |
Need help setting up a network for a small science lab Posted: 02 Mar 2019 08:13 AM PST I am in a small neuroscience laboratory that does a great deal of imaging. I would like to create a centralized storage system that can be accessed both in the laboratory and remotely, allowing anyone to work from home. The largest files would be around 75GB, but on average they are ~20GB. We also have three very expensive programs running on their own computer system that would need to be always connected (one of them would be saving the image from the microscope to the storage system and the other two would load the image to do post-processing and analysis. I would also like to figure out how to remotely connect to these computers so our team can do this from home? One of the programs cost us $30,000 so purchasing additional copies is not possible, haha. Thanks for all the help very new to this scene. [link] [comments] |
Wireless connection drops every couple minutes. Posted: 02 Mar 2019 03:23 PM PST This problem is exclusive to my desktop. The desktop, along with a few laptops and my htpc are all running Windows 10 and are all connected to the same AT&T modem/wireless router unit. The wireless adapter is a tiny USB adapter. Every couple minutes the connection will drop. It is still connected to the router, but it has no internet connection. If I run the Windows troubleshooter it says that the default gateway is not available. It resets the connection, and works for another minute or so. None of the other computers are having this issue. So far I have done a Windows reset (with file wipe, etc) to essentially get back to a fresh install. I have changed the power management settings to not allow the computer to turn off the wireless adapter, I have tried several different USB ports, and have also reset the router. If I plug the adapter into my htpc it works fine. I'm really at wits end. I've disconnected every non-essential component to see if there was a malfunctioning component, but even with only the boot drive and the GPU connected the problem still occurs. Even went as far as unplugging the USB mouse and keyboard while attempting a download and the connection still dropped. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2019 02:39 PM PST I've seen recommendations on an XS4 for Netgear. And I also see the Netgear XR500 gaming router. I'm gonna be doing twitch streaming on my Xbox one, 400mbps down and 40 up. I have a Netgear Nighthawk Triband router now and was thinking of upgrading. Any recommendations ? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2019 02:15 PM PST Never had anything like this before, gonna describe as simple and quick as possible. Woke up one day with my internet connection on "Identifying", ISP came to the house thinking it was a modem/router issue and replaced it. After a few hours, connection slows over time but stays "connected", eventually becomes so slow that some sites just say "Connection timeout" or say "No internet connection". All while my PC says "connected".
any ideas? Im kinda lost (sidenote: I've rarely had problems with my internet before this, and im always on a desktop computer connected via Ethernet.) Edit: I should add; There are multiple devices that also "lose connection" when my computer does aswell. [link] [comments] |
Google WiFi or TP-Link Deco M5 Posted: 02 Mar 2019 02:01 PM PST Hi looking for recommendation, Looking for new mesh wifi system and limited to options in title as they are available in local market. My ISP modem is in the living room and I will connect my Nvidia shield to the new router, I want to provide WiFi to two bedrooms next to the living room seperated by concrete walls. Google WiFi 3 pack sells for 270 USD and Deco M5 sells for 80 USD each, so first do you recommend Google or TP Link deco and second do you think that two deco nodes are enough to provide coverage? Note: It an old house so no option to run cables, and I read that Netgear orbi is better option but it is above my budget of approx. 250 USD. [link] [comments] |
