Remote VPN options for boat network Posted: 29 Mar 2019 12:10 PM PDT Hi :) So, I installed a small network on my boat last year, and I'd love to have access to that network from home/work/mobile. Last year my plan was to use a small travel router (basically a small DD-WRT router) to connect to my marinas wifi. I then ran openvpn from the router to a small VM I started in AWS. Then from home on my PC I could vpn to the VM and access the boat's network. This solution failed though as my marina has a captive portal that times out after a day, and with me not there to re-log into it, well yeah... (didn't think of this when planing, oops). Summer was dragging on and ended up just abandoning remote access for the time. Now I'm trying to see how I can do it for this upcoming season. :) For connectivity on the boat I'm looking to see if I can do something with wifi, but if the WiFi doesn't work fail over to cellular. Would need to handle situation where it's connected to WiFi and behind a captive portal though... Not sure dd-wrt does that though haven't looked yet. Similarly at home I'd like to have access to the boat's network from any pc/device. Currently using ISP provided modem/router, so looking to replace it. Could also use better WiFi at home 2.4ghz is very crowded and 5ghz doesn't get through our entire apt. Finally I need some glue to get the networks together. I could use openvpn again, but honestly I found it a pain to use the free version. Surely there's consumer solutions for this? I don't mind paying a small fee. Bonus if I can access from mobile without being on home wifi :) Would love any suggestions on gear/providers :) THanks! [link] [comments] |
Can portable SSD drives work with Routers? Posted: 29 Mar 2019 03:13 PM PDT Big noob, probably obvious answer. I have an RT-ac58u and I want to setup file transfer/media server. I don't have any USB 3.1 portable usb/hard drives so I'm in the market... Theres a 250gb portable SSD going for a good price but I'm not sure if the router picks up such a device vs a normal USB stick. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Need help with router connections Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:12 PM PDT Hello everyone. I have some problems with the modem/router my ISP provides(its crap). Wifi doesn't work very good(Ethernet works fine). Long story short, I want to buy a new router so it can handle my wifi traffic (if you can call it that way). I investigated some about this and found two types of connections: 1) Internet - Modem/Router(Bridge mode) - New Router - Devices: Ethernet/Wifi 2) Internet - Modem/Router(Turn off Wifi) - New Router(Working only as Wifi interface between devices and the ISP modem/router) - Devices: Wifi. I know 1) is the best option but if I put the modem in bridge mode my ISP support told me some technical stuff about voice over Internet and if I switched to bridge mode I'll lose phone service(fiber optics). Question 1: Is connection 2 possible? If it is, will it work fine? ISP recommended these two routers: Linksys EA6350 AC1200 and TP-LINK C7 AC1750 Assuming question 1 is viable, Question 2: Which of these routers should I get, or is there something else better for my needs? Internet speed: 100Mbps (Will upgrade to 200 Mbps) Usage: A lot of Youtube, gaming, FullHD and 4K streaming TV (Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc). [link] [comments] |
major fortnite packet loss even with ethernet. pls help Posted: 29 Mar 2019 06:59 PM PDT Im getting some major packet loss in just fortnite, everything else is good Wifi. I use ethernet but this happened without ethernet too. this all started at the beginning of season 8. I`m pretty sure the issue is Fortnite itself, and I`m not the only person with this exact 30 packet loss at least twice a minute. very annoying. Its unplayable and as a competitive player it does effect me largely. I have a video of it if you want to see I can dm. I have tried everything ive found online, except get a new router. reply asking for more details if needed. thanks. already posted in tech support 6 times got barely any responses. I`m tired of this internet issue and I need this shit fixed for future tournaments. [link] [comments] |
Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:37 AM PDT Cable Termination in the house So new home, that has some ethernet in the walls already, the cables terminate here. Internet is fiber (white cable with the red arrow). it runs into that white box, and the black cable (cyan arrow) runs to the ONT, that plugs into my router. I'm really confused about what the blue cable running out of that white box might be! You can see the five other runs coming out of the ceiling. I'm going to reterminate those into a keystone patch panel. Then the real fun begins as there are about four new runs I need to add. Having never done that before, it should be interesting. Daisy-chain switches? Will I lose speed? Posted: 29 Mar 2019 08:54 PM PDT Let's say I have Ethernet running to various rooms in my house (cat6a if that matters). All of the cables terminate in the basement and are hooked up to a switch. I have an output in my office, but I would like more than one port in the office if possible. Do I buy another switch and plug that in at the office, or is there a different product that will accomplish what I'm trying to do? Most importantly- will this reduce internet speed on my computer that would be hooked up to this daisy-chained switch? If so, by how much? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2019 08:53 PM PDT I have a tp link n300 and I cant get it to connect to my apartment wifi. It's one of those wifis that has a splash page to enter your personal code to access. Everything I've read makes it sound simple but I just can figure it out. Any help is appreciated [link] [comments] |
Home Networking Setups w/ Multiple APs Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:08 PM PDT G'day, I am my families and my Girlfriends families IT guru (not very guru, I just seem to be the only one smart enough to google/youtube issues). Both households are about to be connected to the NBN (Australia's version of Fiber Optic Network), and I have been asked to bring the both households networking up to date and enable it to perform at maximum, since speeds will increase from 10Mbps to hopefully either 50Mbps or 100Mbps depending on which speed option either family chooses.
I have thought about mesh networks but they seem rather pricey. I have also seen lots of positive reviews about Ubiqutis products. Although, I can't seem to find an WiFi AP that also has multiple Ethernet ports? I am also open to other brands, we get all the big names in Australia. Budget would be less than maybe $400 AUD, but might be able to stretch it to $500 AUD with some good reasoning. Thanks in Advance, any help would be much appreciated. Edit - I just found on Ubiquiti's website, that some of their AP's have a range of 122m (400ft) is this WiFi range? that seems excessive to me. [link] [comments] |
Hardware based solution to test Broadband Speed? Posted: 29 Mar 2019 02:33 PM PDT So I just got Gigafast from Vodafone here in the UK promising me 900mpbs down. Problem is, my speed tests on various sites are only showing about 250mpbs down most of the time though upload is sometimes around 900. They sent an engineer out and he had something he plugged directly into the router which tested the speed and that showed as 900 up and down. He said that the Speed Test servers can't actually handle that high a speed but I feel like this BS as I have a VPS in Edinburgh and the speed tests come back as 1Gs. They've also said that the router is gigabit capable but I've tried my own one anyway with no luck. I don't really know where to FTP into to max out my speed and test that way as most FTP test servers I know seem to max out their upload at 100mbps. I'm also using both a Cat6 cable and a gigabit capable device. Is there any type of device I can use to plug into the router to determine the speed? Similar to whatever the engineer used? Or is there some other way I can test my speed? [link] [comments] |
How do you cool your garage setup?? Posted: 29 Mar 2019 05:08 PM PDT Hey! So my modem, router, Plex server PC and several docked drives all reside either on the wall or on a shelf in my garage. I live in Ontario Canada so cooling over the winter is a non-issue. Summer with 35-40 degree C temps and humidity concern me. I've grouped everything together so one big cold box solution could work.. Are fans efficient enough to do this? I do have one plan; I got my hands on a 27 ru rack for free. As well I am lucky enough to have an HVAC vent in my garage.. for some weird reason. My thought is to rack mount everything, run a tube from the vent with a dust filter into the rack and have an exhaust fan on the top pulling air out. This is crazy elaborate, but it may be a viable solution. The only thing that would get left stranded in the garage is the router... unless I can convince my wife to let me wall mount it inside. Or do some kind of fan setup.. [link] [comments] |
Is there a program for monitoring/logging bandwidth of a single program/script? Posted: 29 Mar 2019 03:18 AM PDT I'm running windows 10 and I have a batch script I would like to log/monitor the bandwidth it uses. The script calls a Java program and loops it a couple of times. Is there a way I could use a built in windows tool or a free program to do what I want? It doesn't need to be fancy, it just needs to get the job done. [link] [comments] |
Is my router causing a bottleneck? Posted: 29 Mar 2019 10:34 AM PDT Hi team! Hope you are all doing well, and thank you for the help in advance... I just upgraded my internet to Spectrum's 300 Mbps internet. I'm currently using the ASUS RT-AC1200. When I hard wire my PC directly from the modem I can download off steam at ~40MB/s. When I plug my modem into the router then hard-wire into the PC it gets 12MB. So, I'm assuming a 1200 bandwidth means it can only transfer about 12MB. Major question: is this creating a bottle neck? Minor question 1: Can the AC 1200 transfer 12MB per slot I.E. if you hard wire 3 PCs can they all download at 12MD/s or would the only reach 4MB/s? Minor question 2: If I'm correct I plan to upgrade to this: ASUS RT-AC5300 Tri-Band is this overkill care to recommend alternatives? I'm willing to spend 150-400$ but not interested in spending a lot more if it's not worth the value. I appreciate the help, and realize I may be way off in my diagnostics any youtube videos or articles explaining this stuff is also enjoyed! Other notes: Spectrum sent an alternative router but it has no antenna and I'm afraid it won't go through my house properly. The router they sent and expect me to rent is this: Sagemcom fast 5260 looks like a POS imo... [link] [comments] |
Cant connect to minecraft server from outside LAN Posted: 29 Mar 2019 09:00 AM PDT I have tried setting up port-forwarding but no matter what i do, its like i cannot connect to my server via my Ip-adress. Accessing a network share from a different router. Posted: 29 Mar 2019 04:02 PM PDT Here is how my network is setup Gateway -> 2nd router - > PC with shared folder Also Same gateway - > My PC I have an ip address of 192.168.1.50 Other PC that is directly connect to the gateway is 192.168.88.55 Is there a way to keep everything set up the way it is and still have access to this network drive? The only thing I though of is to add a second network card to my machine that hooks into the 2nd router. However I want to have a direct connection with my gateway due to the fact that I have Gigabit and the 2nd router is a bottleneck. Edit: I do not want to make my second router an access point. It is running DumaOS on it and I like to utilize it while I'm gaming. I cannot use it with my gateway set to bridge mode because the original netduma router is a huge bottleneck for my internet connection. I have gigabit and the netduma router only supports about half of that. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2019 03:09 PM PDT hi all, I had a normal home network setup with wrt3200acm router and 2 other Linksys routers ea8300, ea8500 extending the wireless network. 2 desktops on lan and the rest of the machines on wireless. I made one of the desktops to a NAS server and got a 10Gb Asus network card for it and decided it to also get a netgear GS110EMX switch. From the ISP modem, cable went to the router and from the router to the switch's uplink port but since its managed switch i think doesn't really matter which port it goes into and moreover, since the router is providing 10/100/1000Mbps it really doesn't make any difference. My ISP speed is about 400 so the question is: 1. What do you guys think of the netgear GS110EMX switch? 2. Does it make any difference if I changed the cables coming from the modem to router and router to switch and if so what kind of cable should I get? cat6a? cat7? SPF+? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2019 02:48 PM PDT Hello I want to setup a Server on my PC but my ISPs network makes it impossible to forward a port to my pc. It's Internet->ISP Modem(No access)->My router and other users' routers Is there a way for my pc to be seen by the outside world? Can I use a VPS as some sort of proxy? [link] [comments] |
First Time Modem/Router Purchase Suggestions Posted: 29 Mar 2019 01:29 PM PDT I'm moving in to a small house in about a month, and it looks like my options for internet service providers are pretty much entirely limited to Cox cable, so I was planning on getting an internet only package with them (likely 100mbs plan). I've done a bit of research and have found a list of Cox compatible routers/modems, but I am pretty overwhelmed by the amount of info/product reviewing needed to get started. Can anyone give me a solid modem and router to fit my needs? Is this something I can keep tabs on used options in my area to snag cheap? I don't mind throwing ~$200 down for some equipment that could last me several years and save me from paying rental fees to the cable overlords. My bandwidth demands are usually represented by at max my gaming PC, another laptop, 2 smart phones and 1-2 streaming smart TVs. I have never used wired internet on my PC but ideally that would also be a part of the plan directly from the modem. I was assuming a plan with up to 100mbs download speeds would be enough for my needs. [link] [comments] |
Problem with ethernet and weird fix Posted: 29 Mar 2019 12:39 PM PDT I have a problem with my ethernet connection (WIFI never worked) on one of my computers. The other two work perfectly with ethernet. Randomly the internet starts to fail and I cannot open webpages. This started some days ago. I thought it was the ethernet port having problems and ai bought a usb ethernet adapter but same problem. Checked changing the DNS, playing around with options but couldn't fix it. Checked for malware with Rkill and Malwarebytes, nothing. And this is the weird thing in my opinion, whenever it starts to fail I open the Network and Internet Settings (right click to the Network icon at the taskbar, Open Network and Internet settings) and it solves the issue for a while. Every time I do this it works. Any idea how could I solve this? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2019 12:21 PM PDT Hiya I have recently bought a TP Link Archer1200 and the highest down speed I've got is 17mbps and the highest down speed I've got is 1mbps. On average, my down is about 13mbps and my up is 500kbps. What am I doing wrong? I'm from England and my ISP is Sky. These recordings were whilst I was standing directly Infront of the router. Posted: 29 Mar 2019 11:26 AM PDT Router - Dlink DIR-816 This is my configuration. Is there anything I should change? Wireless 5 G
Wireless
Router use case - Used at home. Always turned on. Devices always connected - 1 TV, 1 Laptop, 4 Phones, 2 Tabs. Internet speeds of ~100 Mbps. Issues - The Wireless 5G network is glitchy - Doesn't show up most of the time on my devices and when it does sometimes refuses to connect. I am getting 4 times higher internet speeds on my laptop(connected to my router via ethernet) as compared to the devices connected wirelessly. [link] [comments] |
Using router only for WiFi: Modem>PC-LAN1,Router-LAN2 ? Posted: 29 Mar 2019 11:21 AM PDT DD-WRT router, Technicolor modem, PC and Wifi with Vlan1 and vlan2-like guest access. I had this setup working fine while I was with another ISP, now that I changed and have a new modem+switch I would like to know if I can do this setup instead as the old Modem only had 1 LAN port that was meant to go into the ISP's router, but I was using my DD-WRT router in th chain instead. I am uncertain what I would be searching for so I just need some direction. WAN: 1.1.1.1 Modem: 192.168.1.M Router on LAN1: gateway? at 192.168.1.M | IP: 192.168.1.R PC on LAN2: 192.168.1.PC What exactly do I need to configure, I am too used to Modem>LAN1:Router>Router LAN#:Devices. Posted: 29 Mar 2019 10:45 AM PDT My router is meant to be switched on 24/7 with no downtime. (Ofcourse I could probably turn it off for a couple of minutes a week) Devices that are going to be always connected (more devices ~3 may be connected occasionally) - 1 Smart TV 2 Tabs 4 Phones 1 Laptop This should probably not matter, but it is extremely important that I am able to connect to the Wifi router using a Linux distro as well. The router should support internet speeds of atleast 150 Mbps on each device. It should cover a range of atleast 20 feet. Please recommend the cheapest device possible. I will be buying it from India if that makes a difference. [link] [comments] |
Connecting to a 802.1x network without a certificate. - Virgin Media public wifi Posted: 29 Mar 2019 10:26 AM PDT Post got removed from /networking/ My broadband supplier is Virgin Media in the UK. One of the services they provide is public wifi in which an 802.1x network is used. This is authenticated using your ISP email username/password and a certificate is provided for iOS devices. For Mac and Windows there is no certificate as this comes together with an app. If I use the network without validation am I at risk of having my email username and password exposed? My understanding is the certificate stops the authentication process if it can't verify it as genuine. Should I avoid doing this? [link] [comments] |
Connection in bedroom sucks - would better router help? Posted: 29 Mar 2019 08:31 AM PDT Hi all, I have the standard fios router setup in my living room in the middle floor of my house. Wifi is fine everywhere except for my master bedroom on the top floor. The signal in my bedroom is awful. I have Verizon's extender sitting around, however I don't believe the wall connection in my bedroom is connected to the one in my living room. The extender is supposed to connect to the coax and detect my router - but it doesn't detect it at all. I've read that it's possible my coax outlets aren't connected to eachother. I could have an electrician come and connect the coax ports but I'm not sure how much that would cost. Just wondering if I got a better router instead (with external antennas) would that be a better option? I'm not sure if there is something "blocking" the signal to the bedroom, so I'm concerned a better router won't do much. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2019 09:16 AM PDT My laptop is connected to my Wifi router using an ethernet cable. Speedtest.net shows that I have a download speed of 80 Mbps. My mobile phone which is connected my wifi has a download speed of 20 Mbps according to Speedtest.net. Is this normal? - Does connecting to the wifi router using an ethernet cable give faster speeds? (And if so, is it normal for it to vary by this much?) Do I need to change my router? My router - Dlink DIR-816. [link] [comments] |
