What is up with task manager and blinky things to click? Windows Help

What is up with task manager and blinky things to click?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 05:12 PM PDT

I'm an avid user of task manager, I use it practically every single day. After a Windows 10 major update (1809) it is completely useless.
    * Why can I only click on a process when the blinky clicky icon is next to it?
    * Why are blinky clicky icons blinking in the first place????!!???!?!

Here is a short video of me clicking frantically on icons that are only active when blinking, and notice how my clicks are only registered when the blinky icon is shown ..

    https://youtu.be/l-CZGBdMHW8

Seriously, what the hell is going on? Is it a bug or did someone actually say "hey, this is a good feature.. Blinky icons is what people need!" .. NO THEY DO NOT!

    Help with Game Bar

Hello, After the Update for the 1809, I checked the game bar, and noticed that the Performance tab did not appear. Anyone know how I can active it there? And if she really came in that build.

    Thankful

Notification area bug still present in October update

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 03:57 PM PDT

    https://imgur.com/9TBPnFV

Since the Spring update, this is what happens to my notification area whenever I turn my display off (HDMI) and back on. Certain programs will also look screwed up, with text in form fields overlapping icons and other visual anomalies.

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-performance/windows-10-taskbar-bug-presented-in-1709-worst-on/c32e852e-bafe-44f8-ae5e-8744e33bb673

I believe this is the same bug discussed here. Microsoft says it's been fixed in the October update, but I am still experiencing the problem. I'm going to assume it has something to do with Windows being confused during the HDMI handshake process and thinking the resolution or DPI is meant to be something else.

Action Center visual pop out bug?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 04:48 PM PDT

Anyone encountered a small bug where when opening the Action Center it pops out from the left for a split of a second and then normally pops out from the right? I use two monitors and sometimes I use only one and disable the second one. But I don't know if it's related.

Disable Web Results in Windows Search (Windows 10)

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 02:21 PM PDT

I couldn't find a solution to this on any other site and eventually had to have someone from Microsoft help me with this so I thought it would be helpful for anyone else with the same issue to post the solution. Basically the settings within Cortana didn't exist anymore, or at least not on the version of Windows 10 that I have. These are the exact steps I followed, hope this is able to help someone else.

    1. Tap on the Windows-key, type regedit.exe and hit enter.
      1. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search
      2. If the key does not exist, right-click on Windows and select New > Key, and name it Windows Search.
      3. If the preference ConnectedSearchUseWeb exists, double-click on it and set it to 0 to turn web search in Windows 10 off.
      4. If it does not exist, right-click on Windows Search and select New > Dword (32-bit) Value, name it ConnectedSearchUseWeb, and set its value to 0.

Windows Explorer Context Menu extension to auto rotate JPEG images based on EXIF orientation property

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 12:00 PM PDT

I saw a few older posts relating to this so I thought I would post a new one. Many have encountered JPEG images being rotated sideways or upside down in certain apps/devices. This is due to the images' EXIF orientation property (typically set by the device that created the image) not being respected by the app/device displaying it.

I recently wrote a free, open source extension to Windows Explorer to allow normalizing JPEG rotation based on the EXIF orientation property. I wrote it after having issues creating slide shows on TVs, digital frames and other devices that did not display JPEGs rotated correctly. Install link on github is below. Hopefully it helps.

    https://github.com/chrdavis/JPEGAutoRotator

The extension examines the selected files (and sub folders) for JPEG images. It then checks if there is a EXIF orientation property included in the file. The image is then rotated/flipped as necessary to normalize the image and the EXIF orientation property is removed. Rotation is lossless as long as the dimensions of the images are multiples of 8/16 (all modern digital cameras should provide images of such dimensions).

I saw a couple other similar implementations of this out there but wanted a cleaner, faster implementation. Let me know if you have any issues/suggestions.

Suggestions for password reset for Windows 10 with UEFI

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 06:39 PM PDT

    Hi All,

My friend owns a UPS store and somehow someone changed the admin password. I've been trying to use Kon-Boot and Hiren's. Has anyone had any luck with Hiren's version 15? So far it seems to fail each time I use it. Additionally, would you suggest using another tool over the two previously mentioned?

    Thank you,

Displaying two different pictures on two monitors (windows 7)

Displaying two different pictures on two monitors (windows 7)

    Hello,

Im running 7 on my work computer and am trying to have a picture on one monitor and another picture on another. I keep seeing in forums and stuff to go to the personalization option in control panel and right click an image and hit "set on monitor 1/2" but that option doesn't seem to exist for me and im not too sure why.

    Anyone help with this?

Where is Windows File Explorer getting their list of contacts for "Share"?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 11:22 AM PDT

If you right click on any file in Windows Explorer, there's a "Share" option, which then asks you to pick who to share to from a list of contacts. I'm getting a list of contacts from my e-mail, but I turned my account into a local account, and I've deleted all accounts from Settings -> Accounts -> Email & app accounts. I don't understand how it can still be getting contacts from my e-mail.

    BIOS vs Device Manager

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 08:32 PM PDT

On I laptop I recently disabled my Intel graphic as Adobe P pro would only use it over my 1050. I disabled the Intel HD card through the device manager on windows 10. Is that any different then disabling it in my BIOS?

Is there a reason to use windows 10 yet?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 08:10 PM PDT

I still don't use windows 10 as I haven't found a reason to use it yet and due to how long windows 7 still has as far as support I have very much a "cross that bridge when i come to it" mentality.

I think the biggest issue is that I'm not having any problems with windows 7. None at all.

I highly value consistency , and I feel consistency and reliability go hand in hand, and i can't justify changing an operating system when i do not have a reason to do so. I'm sure i'll get a big laugh for this but my main pc is still using the original gpu driver that my gtx 1060 came with in the box back in 2016. Because once again , it doesn't have any problems.

I was wondering if perhaps windows server might be a better alternative to windows 10 someday in the future? Or if i should just bite the bullet and learn the basics of linux.

How to install Windows 7 without going insane?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 08:06 PM PDT

I'm going to buy a new laptop next week, and I want to install Windows 7 on in to replace the inevitably bloatware-infested Win10 Home that's going to be pre-installed.

The problem is that while I still have the Win7 Ultimate DVDs from when it was released in 2009, installing and then applying all the updates already was a nightmare the last time I did it 3 1/2 years ago. Doing that now with almost a decade worth of updates is something I'd rather avoid.

So, what are my options for installing Windows 7?

And yes, I know that extended support for Win7 ends in January 2020. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Edit: Addtionally, since the new notebook won't have an optical drive anymore, can I simply create a disk image of the installation DVD, copy it to a USB stick, and use that to install Win7?

    October Update 2018 BSOD FPWinfo.sys

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 08:04 PM PDT

I have no idea what this file is. It does not exist on my pc, or any pc I own. I upgraded to the latest October 2018 release, windows 10 x64 Home. It boots, gets to my login screen, and then BSOD. Safe Mode doesn't help. Does anyone recognize this file or how to fix this?

    Free powerpoint viewer

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 07:41 PM PDT

The main laptop for running audio and video died at my church last week. I got a good deal from a local referb shop for a Lenovo T550 with windows 10. All is well except it does not have any kind of MS office suit installed. I knew at one time there was a free powerpoint viewer app that microsoft offered, but it looks like that was discontinued and I can't find any download for it... So what now? I know I can install libreoffice, but the main people using this were all quite fluent with the old powerpoint office app (which I think was running on Windows Vista) and I'd hate to change that and/or have to explain how to "use" the new laptop...

Store apps (and Store) no internet access after October update

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 11:26 AM PDT

So I've got a weird issue after the latest and greatest update... My Store app didn't want to open and gave a 0x80072EFD error. Googled about it, but no solution. Tried dozens of things, but none worked. Then I opened another Store app, and also no internet. So I tried even more apps, and none of them work. IE loads a page fine like Firefox, but Edge can't load anything.

Windows 10 itself says it's connected, no troubleshooters help. No proxy or VPN or whatever involved. Worked great a few minutes ago before the update...

To the cloud, and an open source Windows?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 06:00 PM PDT

With Microsoft transitioning to being largely a cloud, big data, and service company, do you think an open source Windows is on the horizon? Most of their business these days is coming from Linux (Azure) and services (MSDN subscriptions, O365, Xbox). At this point, it seems like they could feasibly get away with open sourcing the OS and offloading the development process partially to the community and make bank Google-style.

Where does Win 10 keep the OpenSSH moduli file?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 06:08 AM PDT

I am trying to harden the Windows 10 OpenSSH server using the guidance from sshaudit.com. I can filter out most of the reported weak ciphers by adding the following to C:\ProgramData\ssh\sshd_config:

    KexAlgorithms diffie-hellman-group18-sha512,diffie-hellman-group16-sha512,diffie-hellman-group14-sha256,[curve25519-sha256@libssh.org](mailto:curve25519-sha256@libssh.org)

    HostKeyAlgorithms ssh-rsa,rsa-sha2-512,rsa-sha2-256,ssh-ed25519

    Ciphers [aes256-gcm@openssh.com](mailto:aes256-gcm@openssh.com),[aes128-gcm@openssh.com](mailto:aes128-gcm@openssh.com),aes256-ctr,aes192-ctr,aes128-ctr,chacha20-[poly1305@openssh.com](mailto:poly1305@openssh.com)

    MACS [hmac-sha2-512-etm@openssh.com](mailto:hmac-sha2-512-etm@openssh.com),[hmac-sha2-256-etm@openssh.com](mailto:hmac-sha2-256-etm@openssh.com),[umac-128-etm@openssh.com](mailto:umac-128-etm@openssh.com)

I cannot however find the moduli file so I can eliminate the moduli that are too small. I would naively expect it to be in C:\ProgramData\ssh but it isn't. I have also searched the filesystem, both within Windows and from a Linux box that has the OS drive mounted via samba, and cannot find the moduli file.

Any chance someone could point me in the right direction?

October Windows Update steals file associations related to 3d printing. Doesn't ask or give "advanced option" dialog, just steals them.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 10:32 PM PDT

I've already fixed it so there's not much to show, but if you do 3d printing, get ready to fix your file associations. October Windows Update takes them and associates them to the windows 3d file viewer without asking.

    Heads Up.
