Posted: 03 Oct 2018 07:54 PM PDT Whenever I play Fortnite, the more devices that seem to be connected to our WiFi, the lower the ping will be... also around this time that I am posting this, around the late night hours like 10-12am, it gets noticeably slower, as well as higher ping... I don't get it at all. someone plz explain. (I have Centurylink as service provider btw... that should say something already.) [link] [comments] |

Edgerouter 4 and Ubiquiti UAP‑AC‑PRO Question about speeds Posted: 03 Oct 2018 04:50 AM PDT A few details - ER-4 Latest Firmware UAP-AC-Pro Latest Firmware Motorola MB8600 I have tried a ton of equipment over the past year or so from regular consumer stuff like the Netgear Nighthawk 4s (DDWRT/LEDE), the linksys Velop an older ASUS 66U and most recently their 86U (AC2900 with Merlin). I have just been exploring things more like a hobby and less to max out my standard cable connection but I was trying to avoid any buffering issues and random ping spikes while gaming. Our townhouse (1100sqft) has about 25 devices on it most are standby like lights, phones etc. and usually the most traffic would be if I am playing something and my wife is browsing on her laptop while streaming a show on the TV. So usually low traffic. My AC2900 has been working well with only a few problems but the lan ports started failing intermittently and it's being sent back for RMA after I tried rolling back firmware, changing ports, changing connected devices etc. Last week I ordered an Edgerouter 4 and UAP-AC-PRO after reading about how you can tweak settings in the CLI and as a side project it interested me. I followed the common advice of upgrading the firmware as soon as I set it up and I followed the standard quick start. Set my IP, enabled DHCP on eth0, changed the username and restarted. The edgerouter connected fine and after a couple restarts my PC was picking up internet access. I of course went to run a speed test and I was totally pumped. I was seeing 17ms 450/27 up from 30-45ms 300/17. Granted this is without QoS and my previous router I had enabled fqCodel but this was better latency than I had ever seen and this was 9pm at night. The AC2900 had limits of 380/20 for QoS based on the uncapped max speed. Anyway very excited to see a little gain at a high load time of day for cable internet not to mention that sweet drop in latency. However I could not see the wireless AP through the ubiquiti software. I had to go back and bridge the ports (no other changes) to see it which just came about by fumbling. So I guess first question is why did I have to bridge the ports for the AP to work if DHCP was enabled on the two available ports (eth1 for wan connection to modem, eth 2 my computer, eth 3 the AP)? I don't think it will make much of a difference but I would like to unbridge them as that seems like it defeats the purpose of a router and may cause some sort of low level interference with my computers LAN connection? And then I ran some speed tests, with my wired connection and through the AP. My latency was alright but my speeds dropped dramatically and in fact I got a few failures saying my download speed had plummeted (dslreports). Everything was all over the place 10-80mbps down and 13-17 up but the big deal was my bufferbloat was pegged at 770-1000ms during download. Same rough results on the wireless connections. I tried the smart filter QoS thing that the edgerouter has but same results even if I cut the caps to 250/10. So did I miss something obvious? Only 16 devices on the AP and none active during the test. Thanks for reading and I hope I didn't leave anything out! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2018 03:35 PM PDT Hey there after spending 4 hrs with Verizon I forgot to ask Reddit for help. Got a gigabit connection with the new ONT. Two nights ago I lost all internet connections. I use a Google WiFi router and checked the issued Verizon one. All lights on the ONT are fine. Except one. The indicator on the Ethernet plug blinks one blink every second or so. So it just appears no data is being transmitted between the ONT and router. Resets have been done with no luck. With that said...any thoughts on how to jump start the ONT again? BTW I do have an appointment Friday ☹️ where they threatened to charge $99 if it's not a hardware issue. 🤨 [link] [comments] |
Technicolor CGA2121 admin access. Posted: 03 Oct 2018 07:02 PM PDT Hi everyone, I just got a Technicolor CGA2121 from my ISP (Megacable in México)I've figured out through some youtube comments the username "tech" and password "tech", but this takes me to a basic configuration page with not much options. Inspecting the page on chrome I can uncover an "advanced options" button, but clicking it just logs me out. Anyone know how to unlock the full admin settings? Edit: 15 mins. later it is solved! Turns out that doing a 30-30-30 reset lets you access advanced settings :) I'll leave this here in case someone encounters the same problem. [link] [comments] |
Simple question about configuring router Posted: 03 Oct 2018 06:32 PM PDT Hello! I've been trying to configure some settings in my Arris router (trying to set up a guest network), I went into it's page but the default "admin" "password" doesn't work (probably telephone company guys changed it when they brought it and set it up) so I'll have to reset it and set it up all again. Is there anything special I need to know? For example is the DNS set automatically or do I need to type it in manually. Something I must look up in the router before I reset it? Thanks so much! *sigh* killer networking problems Posted: 03 Oct 2018 05:00 PM PDT I know that killer network is garbage, it's the nic that is part of the motherboard my problem is that the network column in Windows Task Manager is not working I tried the method that killer provides. I am currently using Killer Drivers version 9.0.0.48, with none of the control center thingy. pls help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2018 04:37 PM PDT My grandparents are doing some renovations to their house and I thought mesh wifi would be a simple way to get them good, fast coverage around the house (they still had an 802.11b/g router on one end of the house 🙄). I think its going to work fine even if I dont get my way, but these things are kind of concerning. I dont want this app, I was a little put off by the fact that it required Bluetooth and location access, I can understand, but I hate it. Its set up now though and I cant open the settings in a browser. 192.168.1.1 gets me to a login page but always says login failed, and I can set a ddns through the app to get through the same log in prompt with the same results. I called Tplink and they said you cant do it, that kind of blows my mind. Has anyone gotten it to work? Is it a feature for other deco models? Also do these things have a gps in them? Weird question, but Im a little bit of a security freak and Ive been trying to crack down on my grandparents as theyve been complaining about extremely relevant advertising and other things they dont really understand. I want to say they will work fine but part of me already wants to send them back. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2018 11:34 AM PDT Hi guys! I am having difficulty setting up my MoCa network. I have 2 Actiontec ECB6200 MoCa 2.0 adapters. I have tried 2 different setups, found here - https://imgur.com/a/RIfLOQD . The second adapter is set up so that wall coaxial is attached to the "Coaxial In" port of the second adapter, and ethernet is bridging the adapter and my computer. The issue I am having is, is that the "Coax" light will not turn on on the adapters, and thus my computer is not getting a valid IP configuration. I have confirmed that the adapters are working, as I can get the "Coax" light to turn on when I connect both adapters via "Tv Out". I have tried multiple wall coaxial ports in my house to no avail. I haven't tested that the ports are connected yet via multimeter. Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks for your help! [link] [comments] |
What's a good apc/sc modem/router for consumer use? Posted: 03 Oct 2018 10:29 AM PDT My old one has bad range so i need one with an antana i think. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2018 06:42 AM PDT Last year I successfully wired up my first floor and basement. In a couple weeks I'm going to be wiring up the second floor. One of the things I'm thinking of doing is putting a Ubiquiti AP up in the ceiling in the hallway. If I put a wall plate on the ceiling, does that leave enough room for a cable to connect to the AP? I'm mostly thinking wall plate so it looks neater if I ever sell the house. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2018 02:02 PM PDT Hello, I am very much a novice with networking have the following set up at my house (1,850 sqft): My Extender: NETGEAR N300 Wi-Fi Range Extender, Essentials Edition (EX2700) My Router: TP-Link AC1900 Smart Wireless Router - Beamforming Dual Band Gigabit WiFi Internet Routers for Home, High Speed, Long Range, Ideal for Gaming(Archer C9) My Modem: ARRIS SURFboard SB6183 Modem 16x4 Docsis 3.0 Cable Modem- Retail Packaging- White The problem that my extender is picking up the signal from the router; however, when I connect, most of the time it shows full bars, but no internet connection. I have moved it closer and closer to the router with little success. I have updated the firmware on all the devices with no luck either. Is there any way this extender can pick up a better connection? Is it because they are all different manufacturers? I am running out of ideas and going insane since I am the furthest from the router to pick up any signal. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
"Standard" suggested home setup? Posted: 03 Oct 2018 01:43 PM PDT I am moving into my first home (And first time moving out!), and we are heavily considering Verizon with a 3rd party router. I've looked around a bit and read the side bar, but I am still a bit confused on what sort of build I should be looking to do and how I should do it. The house I am moving to currently has Comcast installed (I believe it is just Phone + TV) and is a three level (including the basement) cape cod. I would like to put our wireless on the second floor and run the ethernet from the ONT to the router on the second floor. I can draw a kind of layout if necessary. I imagine the suggested layout is: ONT Ethernet - > Router (Firewall?) -> Switch -> Wireless/Hardwired Devices Is that true? If so, what is a decent suggestion? I work in IT and am an Application Developer / Backup Sys Admin if that helps. I can get some basic networking stuff. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2018 01:42 PM PDT I'm moving into a condo and I was hoping to get insight on the setup. I've included a screenshot of the floor plan (sorry for potato quality). Ideally I would like to have a strong wifi connection throughout the entire condo (884 sqft). I plan on getting a gigabit connection from Comcast. From what I've read the best modem I can buy is the ARRIS Surfboard SB8200. I need to have a few things hardwired, so I was unsure on what else I should get. I can just run ethernet through the walls and replace the coax outlets (I don't plan on getting cable). I was thinking 1-2 UNIFI AP AC PRO's and a USG. I have an unraid server set up (which obviously needs to be hardwired), so I can just use a docker instead of getting a Cloudkey. The only hardware I have right now is this network switch. Do I need to buy a Ubiquiti UniFi Switch? If I get two access points, it makes sense to buy the switch (since the POE Access Points are $60 more). Does having a Ubiquiti switch provide any other benefit? Do I need two Access Points? Would one suffice? If so, what is the best placement? If not, what is the best placement for two Access Points? Any help would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Different Speeds from opposite ends of a VPN [Diagram]? Posted: 03 Oct 2018 05:22 AM PDT https://i.imgur.com/GFmwOhq.jpg I'm noticing some weird traffic behavior between these two LAN networks on opposite ends of a Site-to-Site IPsec VPN (routed IPsec in pfSense). The behavior happens whether or use the VPN interface or not so I've eliminated the VPN itself being the cause. If I run iperf3 or initiate a samba transfer from Site 1 to Site 2, I'm getting a throughput of about 200Mbps. However, if I initiate either iperf3 or a samba file transfer from Site 2 to Site 1, I'm getting over 600Mbps. Both pfsense boxes are running identical hardware and identical packages (snort and pfblockerng turned off for these tests). Both c2758 CPUs are at the same CPU usage during the transfers. I drew out the above diagram mainly just for myself to confirm if everything looks good and I'm not seeing a networking issue. Nor do I believe a networking either would cause this slowdown for just one direction of the connection. Am I crazy here? And if not, can someone point me in a direction to start looking for the culprit to my issue? [link] [comments] |
Brocade ICX6450 - Help with VLAN config and SFP Licensing Questions Posted: 03 Oct 2018 12:18 PM PDT I have a user VLAN (VLAN100) configured in pfSense. The uplink for pfsense is on 1/1/1. At this point, I want all 1/1/1->1/1/48 GbE ports on that VLAN as untagged access ports (I think?). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2018 12:01 PM PDT Currently I have an Asus AC1900 and have no issues with it. I found a Norton Core at Goodwill for $5 so I bought it. I'm not sure how to tell what makes a router better than another router aside from if the number after AC is bigger. I don't care about the security features that the Norton Core has, I would never pay Norton $10 a month. Just strictly as a router and looking at specs which one performs better? [link] [comments] |
Connecting 2nd router as AP. LAN to LAN or LAN to WAN? Posted: 03 Oct 2018 11:50 AM PDT I have my r7000P as my main routed and my ONT connects to the R7000P WAN port. My older R7000 is setup in AP mode, I have been told that I should connect these two LAN to LAN but netgears picture demonstration shows it LAN to WAN. Which is correct???? https://i.imgur.com/j6jPWil.png Also in regards to wifi channel selection. I have the main router on 11 and the AP router on 6 for the 2.4ghz band. This is correct right? For 5.0ghz do they have to be different as well? Or the same? Or does it not matter for that 5.0 [link] [comments] |
Potential Bufferbloat Causing Ping Problems Posted: 03 Oct 2018 10:42 AM PDT Hi Reddit, I am using a crappy Sagemcomm F@st 5260 Router as provided by Charter-Spectrum. My speeds are 120/down 12/up. I live in Montana and used to get 20-30 ping to Seattle servers in the games I play, however, now I get 60-70. I moved to a different apartment in the same city when I got the ping increase, so it's definitely not the change of location. I ran DSLreport and got a terrible bufferbloat score if this helps. I'm not sure what to do, whether it be buy a new router or what. I would just like some advice! Thanks guys edit: having low ping is very important for what I do so I will take whatever measures necessary to get back to my 20-30 ping! [link] [comments] |
Best way to add a second AC Lite ap? Posted: 03 Oct 2018 06:48 AM PDT Hi Everyone. I am about to move to a new home. Previous setup was an edgerouter lite using ac lite as wap. New home is bigger and 2 stories, so I'm looking to add a second AC Lite and run one to the second floor and one to the basement to hopefully cover the whole house. What's the best way to add the second router? I can set it up based on the same wifi network names I had before right? Just looking for best practices so everything is well connected. Thanks! Posted: 03 Oct 2018 03:01 AM PDT My ISP is Virgin Media, i set the virgin hub / router to modem mode so that i can use my Linksys WRT54G. I uploaded tomato firmware to the linksys no problem but couldnt get any internet access through it. I started playing with settings to try and solve the problem and then made a noob error. I have set the router login page to my public IP Address - changed from 192.168.1.1 and now cant access the router login page... I have tried the reset button on the back of the router but to no avail, any suggestions please? [link] [comments] |
Replacing access point with router on apartment wifi help Posted: 03 Oct 2018 06:19 AM PDT My current situation is that my apartment complex provides internet and the only ethernet port in my apartment has an access point attached to it. I recently bought a Philips Hue bridge and attempted to set it up by connecting it to the access point. This did not work and all of the troubleshooting said it would need to be connected to a router rather than an access point. If I replace this access point with a router, would that solve my issue? Posted: 03 Oct 2018 03:48 AM PDT Hey. I'm having connection problems with some sites, not every site is affected by it. Sites that are having issues work slowish, images won't always load and I'm losing packets towards these sites. I noticed aswell that in game I play that on one server I'm lagging very bad and other is smooth with no issues. Packet loss stops when I plug directly to my cable modem so my first thought was to check another router which I did. Same story - lags and packet loss. Tried changing DNS servers and it didn't help either. I did reset router to factory defaults also didn't make any difference. Router I'm using is TP-Link Archer C1200 and modem is a Cisco one, don't remember exact model right now. They're kinda new, modem was installed 1.5 years ago and router about 1 year ago. All machines and devices connected to router are affected and it doesn't matter if I connect by Wi-Fi or wired, as long as I'm connected through router I'm having issues. Here's a screenshot when I ping one of affected sites and my router at the same time: https://i.imgur.com/W3SOeKn.png I'm willing to buy a new router when I'm sure that it will help. If you need any more information just ask. [link] [comments] |
