Google teases Pixel Mini on Instagram? Posted: 02 Oct 2018 07:27 PM PDT Personally hadn't seen rumours of a Pixel Mini? Would absolutely love a ~4.5 inch phone. I wouldn't call in mini myself but if they release a top spec one handed phone they can call it whatever they want. It'll probably be too expensive too to be fair. [link] [comments]

Manually setting the time zone fixed my standby battery drain (Pixel 2, Android Pie) Posted: 02 Oct 2018 08:15 PM PDT I was seeing around 10%/h battery drain when I left my phone off charge overnight — I had ambient display on but putting the phone screen side down to disable it didn't fix it. Also: I had GSam installed and it said Doze was on overnight. I then noticed
I contacted Google Support, which told me to factory reset my phone, but the issues in Find My Device and the Play Store weren't resolved, until they told me to reset the time zone, so I manually set it to the right one (even though the automatic settings were already correct) and now the Play Store's last used date for my phone is correct and I can find my phone using Find My Device. Also, when on standby, my phone uses only around 1%/h like before. I'm not sure if this is a Pie-specific issue or a more general Google account sync issue (I think my phone was trying to sync with Google overnight but was failing and kept trying) but if anyone else has this issue, hope this helps! Latest Snapchat release adds notification functionality back to the Alpha Posted: 02 Oct 2018 11:57 AM PDT All the options are back, no more annoying vibrate and wake screen up. This is the only change I've noticed so far in the alpha [link] [comments]

Looks like I got a do not disturb while driving feature Posted: 02 Oct 2018 08:09 PM PDT So I was browsing through my phone and a notification appeared saying that a do not disturb while driving feature is available. Looks like it was enabled through Google services or something as I have nit installed any software updates.not tested it since I don't drive. Surprised to see this appear since it's an spoke feature I didn't expect to come to android without announcement. [link] [comments]

You can use one GAuthenticator code/token on multiple apps. Posted: 02 Oct 2018 10:36 AM PDT *apps as in multiple phones/devices with GAuth app. Figured I could make a topic out of it since I already wrote most of this as a post. I just saw this multiple device support advertised on Authy website (Google Authenticator lacks multi-device support) and it rubbed me the wrong way cause it's false advertising. This is also blatantly false:
GAuthenticator does allow multiple devices. You just printscreen the initial QR code then scan it with as many phones as you like. You can even print the seed or move the seed on a stick. (not advised or secure... well maybe saving the printscreen on a stick directly is quite secure, but not ideal) Since we're talking about security, you should also know that SMS auth is actually a weak security link, as phone numbers (sims) can and have been spoofed. There's even a huge lawsuit against some US phone provider about it. SMS auth can be disabled from your google account. The most secure thing you can do, even better than Gauth, is using physical keys like Yubikey or Google's physical keys or some other keys. Also, from a security standpoint, it's not good to print or keep a digital copy of the backup codes but rather write them by hand. And never send them to someone through email (or any digital medium), as their email/computer being breached becomes your own security failure. Write them on a paper and give it to them, without mentioning what your account name is. Basically, never ever mention your account name anywhere near the backup codes. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Oct 2018 04:40 PM PDT Yeah I know the title runs counter to the "exclusive" features that standard OEM business models mandate. But I don't think the S-Pen is ever gonna take off it's limited solely to the Note line. Samsung would still be able to differentiate themselves as they have over the past few years: by simply offering the best hardware builds on the market. Also, contributing code upstream gives the contributor more control over the direction of the OS at large if the feature takes off. Long term, this would make Samsung a fantastic counterweight to Google's iOS-ifying of Android. Samsung's multiwindow and DeX functionality are already based on standard Android APIs; this is the next logical step. Do it, Samsung. Seize the future. [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Oct 2018 03:42 AM PDT Got plenty of time to kill at the mall today, went to the Samsung store, and they have a cylinder where you put your phone and test it's camera low light performance. I decided to test my Pocophone (both on MIUI/stock and MGC's Gcam mod) and compare it with a Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, Note 9, and a Vivo V11. I didn't change a setting on all. I simply pressed the shutter button. With all the phones that have multiple cameras now, why not interchangeable lenses? Posted: 02 Oct 2018 06:13 PM PDT As the title mentions, why not have a phone with the normal complement of wide angle/zoomed in cameras, but add in a tiny little bayonet sort of lens mount over a bare sensor? You could put in a glass window so the sensor isn't scratched, and disable the sensor when a lens isn't attached. It could come with a basic lens already installed as a default so it works to some extent out of the box. The lenses would probably have to be manual focus, I imagine you couldn't move the sensor far enough to get a meaningful focus range without the lenses having some mechanisms, but with small sensors depth of field would make manual focus fairly easy, and it would probably appeal to the photography nerd/hipster crowd. This way you can sell lens accessories that clip into the phone (More $$ from accessory sales, are you listening manufacturers?) Photography nerds would rejoice, and when you're not in "photography mode" you have the normal camera with a built in lens for taking photos of your dog or whatever. But when you want a wide angle, or telephoto, or macro lens, you just snap it into place. Companies like Moment already exist solely off of providing add on lenses for phones, but it seems like external lenses are limited by having the built in lens there. You could consolidate the extra cost associated with adding more and more fixed focal length lenses into handsets, and open up a new section of the accessory market to people more interested in "Pro" photography with a smartphone. Overall I realize this would be pretty niche, and probably isn't an idea any manufacturer would ever run with. It just seems a little ridiculous to keep slapping camera modules into handsets when the only difference is the focal length of the lens. What do you think? Would you use a phone with lots of extra inconvenient pieces? TL;DR Make phones more like cameras [link] [comments]
Small Google Photos Tip - Swipe Up for Image Info Posted: 02 Oct 2018 11:36 AM PDT I'm not sure if this is common knowledge, but today I discovered that swiping up on an open photo will bring up the info panel in Google Photos. Once Lens was introduced and replaced the info button, I found that one extra tap to bring up info a bit inconvenient. Discovering this made me happy and I hope others find this useful!
