My 75 days of Lords Mobile

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 06:17 AM PDT

Secondary account, because everyone who ever played this kind of games is flagged as stupid in this community.

I've just uninstalled the game after 75 days of playing, and I thought I'd share my thoughts on it. I tend to write too much, so there's a TL;DR at the end.

Overall, it's well made. And it's fun to play for a while, even as F2P or with a minimum investment, e.g. US$ 5-10. It gets more grindy and P2W later on, and that's one of the reasons I've left, but I must admit that I had fun playing it.

I joined out of curiosity; I like checking out game mechanics. I don't usually stay long in a single game, and once I get the idea, I'm ready to go check out another. I guess this helped; competition is the main fuel for getting hooked and spending money, and being "at the top" was never my goal.

On the fun side, the game has communities (guilds) - and being in a nice guild is actually very enjoyable. Most players are actually F2P or spend only occasionally just like you are, so they're around your level and power; there were a few whales but I never felt out of place.

This said, let's get on the interesting, nasty side.

The game tries to hook you exploiting the sunk cost fallacy, on three aspects: time, money, and emotion. All of them try to push you into thinking "I've invested so much, I've grown so much, I can't stop now". They're damn good at it.

For "time", the building mechanics are designed so that you'll have lots of game timers ticking at any given moment. Synchronize them as well as you might, chances are that you'll be opening the game several times during the day. So much this, that you'll end up opening it out of habit, just like lighting a cigarette, even when you don't really "have" to be there. This can suck up a considerable amount of time. Depending on your profile, you might feel like wanting to accelerate some timers. Good on you, but what do you do when a building is complete? You start another, and there's the timer ticking again. Eventually, you have spent so much time enhancing your castle, that "you can't let it go to waste" by leaving the game. Beware. Of course, you've got to keep your eyes on the ball - as with all computer games, everything you "build" there is inconsequential in real life. You only get to keep the fun.

"Money" then. With a casual mindset (that is, a noncompetitive one), you can expect to play for free for about one or two months having loads of fun, and feel like you're not missing anything. Not spending makes things complicated only later on, when you're already hooked. Yes, as F2P your castle will periodically be set on fire by whales. Play well, though, and not much will be lost. And there are always weaker castles around for you to play "burn the castle" too, so it's not like the game isn't worth a couple months of fun as F2P. However, the game can easily break your abstinence with cheap offers, so that you lose the idea of not wanting to spend anything on it. And it subtly introduces you into a "value system", according to which you end up thinking that certain heroes or items "might be worth the dollars". From a meta-game point of view, this is of course very silly on the player's part, because the creators built the game so that the hero would be valuable, and then set the price for it. But they're so good at it, that you will easily fall for a "deal" or two. I sure did; I've stayed F2P for the first month and a half, and then spent about US$ 15 in the last month before leaving. Damn, they're good.

And finally, "emotion". The game is designed to be competitive (it's a war game after all), and if you play war, nothing enrages you more than having your troops wiped out by a stronger castle while your guard was down. That scum *offended* you, and you need revenge (and you also let your guard fall, and won't admit the mistake). They think they'll have it easy, right? But you can grow fast too... with money. By my witness this kind of emotion fuels quite a lot of spending. The worst deal ever is spending on training troops, because troops are a volatile resource. And if you lose what you paid money for, then you get *really* angry... and the cycle repeats.

All in all, I've seen whales spend their money, and it's scary to think how it all went into pushing a few bytes in a server. I'm not a saint either, I've entered the game with the intention of not spending, and I left them those 15 dollars... Imagine if I had money to burn. I thought the small price was worth the fun, but it's alarming how a game, if you let it, can make you feel like this kind of microtransactions is a good use of a lot of money. Scary.

Finally, when I left, I had a vision of what the sunk cost fallacy can do to people. I had long-time guildmates (people who joined the game when I did) get sorta angry at me for leaving. We had "built so much" together, and they couldn't fathom how I could be abandoning the game at this point. It was no use explaining that I enjoy checking games, and I don't stay much in any particular one: I was a fool, and a kind of betraying our friendship too. So, there's that.

TL;DR It was two months of decent fun. However, it's easy to enter with the idea of not spending money, and end up spending. It will also suck up your time. Absolutely do not try this kind of games if you're competitive or "hardcore": get a better game with no microtransactions, otherwise they'll have you hooked and you'll spend a lot. If you're a casual gamer and you're just looking for a fun multiplayer game for a limited period, you might try it, and have fun at it, but you'll likely end up spending something. They're just too good at it.

Games that have no P2W or unethical practices?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 11:47 AM PDT

I'm working on a project, and I need some help:

I need games that have: * Zero aspect of P2W (no gacha, no paid level up, no premium currency whatsoever. Only cosmetic, non-gameplay purchases) * No invasive ads (frequent, full-page ads, game-interrupting ads, ads that jump in front of you when you press down, nothing but a reasonable amount of non-disruptive advertisement) * No unethical practices (gambling traps, purchasable energy systems, incentivized reviews, email spam, etc.)

I'm going to attempt to compile a database, and I need help getting started. If you've played any games that you found absent any of these unethical dev practices, please post the name and play store link so I can add them to the list.

    Thanks guys.

A game like Tank Stars that isn't filled with non stop ads?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 05:27 PM PDT

Tank Stars is like Worms and nice and fun, but the non stop constant long ads after everything is completely destroying the game for me.

Is there anything like it that doesn't stop all the time for minutes of ads?

Best card games that aren't Hearthstone?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 07:47 AM PDT

So, I come from a background in Magic the Gathering, and I really enjoy card games. I've played Hearthstone since release, but I am to the point where I really don't enjoy the game anymore. It sucks a lot, because I have spent a lot of money on it, but it is what it is.

I played Eternal for awhile, and got bored after making Masters pretty easily a couple times, including on the second day of the month one month.

I have heard The Elder Scrolls Legends game is in a bad spot after the newest update.

Are there any other card games worth playing on mobile? I really like Solitairica, so it doesn't even have to be multiplayer. I just need to sling some spells and have fun.

Looking for what I would call a 'Spider Queen' game.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 08:25 AM PDT

So there's this Byond game where you can play as monsters, like kobolds, dragons, giant spiders etc. As a spider player, your main spider is your queen. You go around doing basic set up stuff, but after a while you can start laying different types of eggs. Workers, warriors, etc.

I'm basically looking for something like that for mobile gaming, I guess. Where you're an overlord managing your minions.

[DEV] My first game Synopthink, a 154 movies guessing game.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 05:49 AM PDT

After sharing the game with my friends, I wanted to share it on Reddit in order to get more feedback.

Synopthink is a movie guessing game with 154 questions at the moment. The game is simple, you have a description of the movie and the goal is to find the title.

You can get tips using credits giving you a quote of the movie, the credits are earned by answering correctly to the questions or looking at an ad.

Games with similar gameplay to Dragalia Lost

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 04:57 AM PDT

Are there any games with gameplay similar to Dragalia Lost?

I love the gameplay when you're in levels, but not the biggest fan of gacha games and the levels are way to short. I'd prefer 3D, it not sure what options there are.

Edit: I have played and beaten Adventire of Mana. Loved that game.
