Linux From Windows 10 to Linux

    From Windows 10 to Linux

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 02:47 AM PDT

Hi, I am thinking to switch over from Windows 10 to Linux. Anyone that has experience with this? Let me know. I also have some questions. Is it recommended to use other applications to browse the internet for example to be more anonymous, or did you just continue using Google/mainstream browsers. Is there a standard VPN with Linux? And is there a standard firewall or anti virus just like Windows? Any more handy benefits I should know or cons before I switch over? Thanks p.s. any must do's after installing linux?

    Ubuntu mate on usb partition

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 11:08 AM PDT

Hello, i'm trying to create ubuntu mate 18.04.1 installer (from a windows 7 machine) on an usb partition. in the past i would use Lili but it isn't working currently. there are some other apps like multibootusb that allows me to select any partition to make it bootable, so i have two questions:

On multibootusb, will installing on a partition format the whole drive? how dangerous is it?

Is there a better way to do that?

    any help will be appreciated!

I hate to ask this common question, but I need a distro recommendation

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 09:57 AM PDT

I have an old laptop that I'm trying to revive so I can use it as a machine for scambaiting. It has 4 GB of RAM and some low-end AMD processor (1.65GHz) IIRC. I tried Debian Stable, but I just spent the past day and night trying to get its wifi to work and I've given up. I would use Ubuntu, but I don't always agree with Canonical (like when they put amazon ads in Ubuntu back in 2012). All I need from the distro is ease of getting my Wifi to work, and for everything to be 100% open-source.

VGACON disables amdgpu kernel modesetting RX 470

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 09:57 AM PDT

After running "dmesg" output I got the above result error which was suggested to me could be the issue I am having. The issue is that Ubuntu 18.04 appears to be running in software rendering mode and not utilizing the gpu. I have one monitor connected by HDMI through the RX 470. Does anyone know of a posible solution?

    Recover files from corrupted sd

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 08:54 AM PDT

I messed up when trying to benchmark write speed on an sdcard with important files on it.

    sync; sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb1 bs=1M count=1024; sync 1024+0 records in 1024+0 records out 1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB, 1.0 GiB) copied, 23.5386 s, 45.6 MB/s ^C

I realized that I was writing directly to /dev/sdb1 instead of writing to a file inside the mounted card, so in fear of overwriting data, I canceled right after the benchmark seemed to be over (it wasn't). Now it will mount automatically, but does not show anything (cannot click on it in the file explorer, and gparted only shows it as an unknown exfat card.

    What can I do?

Rx 470 not detected, ubuntu 18.04

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 06:54 AM PDT

I have a Pentium g4600 + RX 470. I recently installed Ubuntu 18.04 but it is not displaying my graphics card. I tried installing amd pro drivers but no go.

I am at a lost, and couldn't find anything in forums. Any ideas what could be the issue? First time installing Linux btw. Edit: Graphics appear as llvmpipe (LLVM 6.0, 128bits)

    I don't understand repository versioning.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 12:43 AM PDT

I've got a Debian install on a VPS and noticed a libssl security update. I was curious as to what the update was for and noted the version I'd be updating to is 1.0.1t-1+deb8u. I googled libssl changelog.

    https://www.openssl.org/news/changelog.html

That site lists no such version as 1.0.1t. So where is this versioning coming from?

As an aside, what is the meaning of the postfix "-1+deb8u"?

    Running commands on remote host

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 08:16 AM PDT

I have mounted a remote server through sshfs on my laptop. It's immensely helpful in coding this way so that my environment is available to me.

One issue is that if I want to run commands on the server, I've to open a separate terminal and login and cd to the required directory and run the command. Instead, I've created a script that basically does this:

    ssh user@remote "cd ...; COMMAND"

However, I can't use this method too many times since it basically bombards the server with my ssh requests.

Is it possible to run whatever command on the remote server using a local terminal with just ONE backgrounded ssh connection?

I've tried netcat but that didn't work for me. It would be helpful if someone also explained what exactly is happening since i'm not too well versed with networking and related topics.

    Thanks!

I want to install Arch on a tablet

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 02:29 AM PDT

I want to put Arch on a tablet without X, connect a bluetooth keyboard, and have a super-portable command-line workstation that I can whip out at the coffee shop and look like a hacker.

    • Is this possible? More importantly, is it (relatively) easy or reliable to set up?
    • Where can I learn how to put Arch on a mobile device?
    • What mobile device should I buy for this project, or how can I figure that out?

Atomic Tool Kit - Nginx problem

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 06:40 AM PDT

Hi everyone i have a problem i am struggling to work out.

Nginx is an essential service for Organizr and a few other things.

I can not get this guy to run..

I have read around and keep on bumbing my head.

    --->Starting Nginx...

Job for nginx.service failed because the control process exited with error code.

See "systemctl status nginx.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.

    nginx.service is now: failed

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling manually.

    Thanks again for your help

    Edit:

    "dan@Sever:~$ sudo nginx -t

nginx: [emerg] no "ssl_certificate" is defined for the "listen ... ssl" directive in /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/server.atomic.conf:3

nginx: configuration file /etc/nginx/nginx.conf test failed"

Need help with partition schemes (specs and main purposes listed in the post)

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 07:02 AM PDT

Hi. I am completely new to the linux world and I want to install Linux (ElementaryOS) on my soon coming dell inspiron 3567 (8gb ram, 256 ssd). I am going to mainly use my machine for coding in University (possibly multiple programming languages, database management), casual graphic design in Gravit, front-end coding (could need multiple browsers and many npm packages), maybe server emulations for backend coding, some casual gaming and some office programms + trivial tasks. Can I use the default partition scheme offered by the OS? If a custom one could help me better, what would you recommend me?

    Freezing with nvidia-drm modeset=1

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 04:17 AM PDT

    Setup

I have an Optimus laptop with a GTX 1050, Intel i7 7700HQ, a 128GB SSD and 8GB of RAM. Using Arch Linux and KDE Plasma.

    Neofetch: https://i.imgur.com/F6ksasw.png

Using Nvidia proprietary drivers version 396.24-19.

    kf5-config --version

    Qt: 5.11.

    KDE Frameworks: 5.48.0

    kf5-config: 1.0

    plasmashell --version

    plasmashell 5.13.3

    uname -r

    4.17.9-1-ARCH

I had tearing with the proprietary nvidia drivers, and enabling DRM KMS seemed to fix it. I did it this way: https://askubuntu.com/a/1024499/852424

Sadly, I came across a couple of problems after this:

    Problems

    • Resizing windows by dragging them to one of the edges of the screen sometimes freezes the window in place for about 20 seconds. I can only move my mouse, change to another tty, numlock and capslock still work. There are no logs in journalctl -b when this happens.

    • There are also random freezes, where NOTHING responds. I can't use my mouse or my keyboard, even numlock and capslock don't work. When looking in the journalctl log, I can always see these errors:

    ArchLinux kernel: nvidia-modeset: Allocated GPU:0 (GPU-c07c20bb-45d1-9ef7-5dec-2ccd17eb1af2) @ PCI:0000:01:00.0

    ArchLinux kernel: nvidia-modeset: Freed GPU:0 (GPU-c07c20bb-45d1-9ef7-5dec-2ccd17eb1af2) @ PCI:0000:01:00.0

So how do I fix these problems? What other logs do I need to provide? Thanks.

Do I have 2 window managers if I install i3?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 04:16 AM PDT

If I have the XFwm and install i3, does that mean I have two window managers now? would there be any cons to getting rid of XFwm and using i3 alone--i.e, would there be window trails on frozen windows due to no window buffers in i3, or something like that?

How to install 2 distros on 1 drive?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 02:50 AM PDT

I'm trying to install Fedora and Arch on a single drive, but not sure if this is right.

    I want an encrypted / partitiom on both, so I created 2 partitions for / on both distros, and I also created 2 1GB partitions for the /boot. Right now, I have Fedora already installed and works great, so do I just install arch normally? How would the boot process work? I'm familiar with dual booting on separate drives, but not 1 drive. Also I created 2 partitions for /boot/efi, but I'm not sure if I need them. The partition order is like this;

    /boot/efi: /boot: /: /boot/efi/: boot: /
