Windows 8.1 is so much faster than Windows 10 on older tablet hardware Posted: 03 Aug 2018 04:32 AM PDT Background: I have 3 Windows devices (Gaming PC bought in 2014, a Laptop, Tablet and I used to have a Windows Phone as well) and I have been using Windows 10 since the beginning of 2015 when I installed a Windows 10 Insider preview build. I love Windows 10 and in my opinion 10 is way better than Windows 8.1 for most devices. I also loved Windows 8.1, and appreciate what they tried to do with the tablet focused interface. Windows 10 seemed like a good mix of Windows 7 and 8.1 when I first tried it, and I loved it! However, it feels to me as if the tablet mode on Windows 10 wasn't optimized for tablets at all, and was included just to keep the few Windows 8.1 fans happy. I bought a Windows 8.1 tablet with an Intel Atom Z3735F processor, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage during June 2015, and about 6 months later I upgraded it to Windows 10. The first release of Windows 10 ran fairly decent on my tablet, which has a 1920*1200 screen resolution. The animations weren't as fluid as Windows 8.1, however, but I gradually stopped noticing this as I used the tablet a couple of hours each day during university classes (I am currently a final year CEE student). Tablet mode made the device feel even slower, as if the animations took more GPU power to be displayed or something. With the Windows 10 update that was released last year during October last year( I think the Fall Creators Update), my tablet started to get even slower, up to the point that I have stopped using it and instead upgraded my laptop with a small SSD and carry it with me to each class. I recently reinstalled Windows 8.1 and it feels like a new device. Apps feel much faster, I can actually use Google Chrome on it with fairly decent performance. The one big downside is that the app availability on Windows 8.1 is pathetic, there isn't even a decent Reddit app for Windows 8.1. Overall, I feel that Microsoft neglected older tablet hardware a bit with Windows 10, especially the tablet mode. Tablet mode made my device feel even slower, which is ironic seeing as I don't want to use my tablet in desktop mode all the time and keep on resizing each app to fill the entire screen etc. I am happier with Windows 8.1, even though I cannot activate it anymore as my OEM Windows key is rejected by Windows. Edit: fixed a word [link] [comments]

Bizarre updates in windows update Posted: 03 Aug 2018 01:05 PM PDT Windows 7 update popped up, requesting to install some more unstable, useless garbage today. As usual, i googled each of the updates to check for known issues, and found some very surprising things. The updates:
All of these say 7/10/18 for their release date, but just appeared today. Is this some sort of virus? Did a microsoft employee have a meltdown? Is it just a broken trash fire, like windows in general? [link] [comments]
Just phoned MS, been told my windows key is 'expired' - is this right? Posted: 03 Aug 2018 10:43 AM PDT I have a product key for Windows 7 from 2011 which wouldn't give me the ISO on the windows 7 download page so I phoned MS who told me the key has been used 16 times and should have a limit of 7, so I cannot use it anymore. I paid about 125 GBP for a retail key...purely so I could switch between computers and not worry about it. 16 is a lot, but it's been about 2 installations every year which is about right for me counting switching computers as well. I like to keep my PC fresh... I was under the impression a retail Windows 7 key can be used to reinstall or go between computers when I get rid of my old one. It's not actually in use right now, only reason I wanted it was to run a Win7 VM.... The guys advice was to buy a new key, but since I cannot buy Win 7 from MS anymore I would need to go a third party for a key. Before I drop some money on a new key, I just wanted to double check this is the correct thing to do? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Aug 2018 05:40 PM PDT I have been using Windows 10 for years now and I am kinda sick with its current state. Bloated, full of ads, telemetry and apps in the background.I am also sick of tweaking it all over again when reinstalling Windows. I wanted to move to a simpler and nicer things:Windows 8.1. Why?Because I consider it's as a middle ground:fast, responsive but still have a touch of modern and after a bit of tweaking,it's damn near-perfect. The questions I have are that:
My laptop: Acer Predator Helios 300-i7-7700HQ,8GB DDR4,GTX 1060 6G and 128GB M2.SSD SATA 3 +1TB 5400rpm HDD. [link] [comments]
Using the "Back up and Restore (Windows 7)" option on Windows 10 to move to new laptop? Posted: 03 Aug 2018 12:53 PM PDT Hi, I have a Surface Book, which I am going to send back to MS to have it replaced (they don't repair, but instead give factory refurbished items). Since it is going to be a new device I'd need to move all my system to the new laptop, when it arrives. Is the built-in "Back up and Restore (Windows 7)" option (the one on the Control Panel) good enough? I use Windows 10 Build 17134.165 currently. I made a "System image" to an external HDD, can I restore it without any issues on the replacement unit? They said it should be the same configuration but a different unit with different SN and hardware IDs. I'd rather not reinstall all my apps, but just reflash a backup image with all my files and apps and continue to work on the new laptop if it arrives. Do I need a recovery disk? When I did the image it asked me if I want to make a recovery disk, but finally failed this step, because I don't have a DVD drive. Or if it has Windows pre-installed, can I run a recovery mode or something to recover my image? Do I need to run Windows Update before reflashing the image, or it also reflashes Windows to current version? Would it screw with hardware activation of Windows? Or should I use a third-party imaging app instead? Thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Aug 2018 10:34 AM PDT Hi, I recently had to reinstall Windows 10 onto my PC and reformat my C drive. In doing so, it appears that something wonky has happened with the windows 10 mail app that is included in Windows 10. It constantly pops to the foreground, forcing out all other applications to make itself known to me. At first I was refusing to sign into it, instead trying to find a way to just ignore it. But now, with it popping to the foreground every 10 seconds, I signed into it hoping to appease the application, but to no avail. How do I either:

Can I transfer files from a bootable USB to another? Posted: 03 Aug 2018 03:26 PM PDT Hello! So I have this 16GB USB on which I installed Windows 10 through the media creation tool. Now I bought a 8GB USB because I need the 16GB one. My question is: can I transfer files from the bootable 16GB one to the 8GB one, but that it's still bootable? It's not a problem if it's not possible, I can just delete everything from the 16GB one and reinstall to the 8GB one. Sorry if the wording is complicated. [link] [comments]
Numerical Sort WITHIN Group Policy? Posted: 03 Aug 2018 11:30 AM PDT I have a bunch of policies titled:

Is there a way to sort numerically within the group policy editor? Alternately, how should I rename my policies to make sorting easier (each policy is for adding a single bookmark, which is why they are numbered rather than named differently)? [link] [comments]

Unable to burn disc - Windows 10 (With my 'solution') Posted: 03 Aug 2018 01:25 PM PDT I was trying to burn a disc today. I put a blank DVD in my RW drive, opened a window on the RW drive, copied the files I wanted over, and clicked the burn button at the top of the window. I got an error that the source and destination files had the same name!??? I did a bunch of things to try and get it to work, all failed. Finally I had another window open at the computer level, I right clicked on the RW drive, looking for any properties/troubleshoot options, and saw the burn in that menu. It worked. I burned two other discs after that with the same result. The burn in the RW drive window where I copy the files does not work. If I go up to the computer view, right click the RW drive, and burn from there it works! Just throwing that out there on the chance it might help someone. [link] [comments]

Keyboard Layout automated installation issues Posted: 03 Aug 2018 04:01 AM PDT Hey fellow redditors! Since i am swiss, i am using the swiss german keyboard. However, every so often windows decides to install the swiss french keyboard and switches to that frequently. I have no idea on how and why windows 10 does that... Any ideas? Thanks!
