Keystone punchdown jack or Keystone in-line coupler? Posted: 03 Aug 2018 11:43 AM PDT I'm getting Gigabit Fiber next week and am going to do an exterior EMT conduit from my first floor to my second floor. I'm wanting to bring 4-6 cables up. I read solid cables are a pain getting around the 90 degree bends in a LB Conduit Body. So I'm thinking about getting these stranded cables, Cable Matters Snagless Cat 6a / Cat6a (SSTP/SFTP) Shielded Ethernet Cable in Blue 20 Feet This shielded cat6a butterfly tool-less keystone jack technically says it works with stranded... but I know for keystone it should be solid. These shielded cat6 keystone jack in-line couplers look good, but I heard can add resistance? Trying to figure what cons/pros, and what would be better long-term. [link] [comments] |

Freenas on internet connection sharing Posted: 03 Aug 2018 06:23 PM PDT I know the situation isn't ideal, but it's all I can do. There's no ethernet close to where I can put the server and the server doesn't have wifi. The problem I'm having is that only the computers that I've connected via ethernet to the server with internet connection sharing can see it. One of the computers is a laptop running Ubuntu and the other is my desktop running Linux Mint. I don't know much about networking but I'm gonna assume the solution lies with some network configuration. The IP of the server is 10.42.0.144. The IP of my desktop is 10.0.0.1. the IP of the Ubuntu laptop is 10.0.0.6. Do I need to change the server IP to 10.0.0.X? Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you for any help. Posted: 03 Aug 2018 06:09 PM PDT Sorry if this is cringe to read, I'm not very big into technology.. so, I just moved into a new rental house and set up the internet. I have a Hitron modem and I get WiFi directly from this. This is concerning to me because when my four other roommates move in will the connection be poor? What is the difference from a modem to a router? Because I own a router, and I was wondering if I hooked up my router and ran only my things off of that, would that make a difference to my connection. Also do I need to hook that directly to the modem, or can I hook it to a wall Ethernet port. And then again how do I know whether it is an ethernet port or a telephone port? Any help is appreciated, just looking for a little more education on the topic! [link] [comments] |
Router Placement and Hardwire Running Posted: 03 Aug 2018 06:05 PM PDT Hi all, I've tried to do my research but I either am not asking the right questions or I'm not finding the answers I need. I have a few questions I'll try and break down as thoroughly as possible.
Right now, my modem and router are right next to my TV in an exterior corner of my living room (for reference, I have a first floor, a second floor, and a partially finished basement. The first floor and second floor are the priority as the basement doesn't have anything in it right now). I know my placement isn't the best, for a couple reasons, so I'm looking to moving it. The goal is to keep it in an inauspicious place thats not too noticeable, pushes good signal to the whole house, but is still easily accessible.
Whichever option (or new proposal) is taken from the above question, I'll need to run a new coax line and then some cat5e/cat6 outlines so I can keep my home theatre area hardwired. I'm capable of running the cables myself but I am looking for help when it comes to the wall plates. The first option is just a female to female plate and running cables that already have the RJ45 jacks on them. The second option is a faceplate that uses your average keystone jacks. Are there any benefits/negatives (other than ease) to using one over the other? Extra information:
Please feel free to ask any questions that might be needed to help me. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Edited for corrections and grammar (sorry my grammar sucks). [link] [comments] |
Palo Alto PA 200 Throttling issues Posted: 03 Aug 2018 06:04 PM PDT Does anyone know why my PA 200 would throttle my network speed? I have 0 rules or policies set, right now its just used to monitor traffic. With the firewall in place I get 3 mbs down. Without I get 70 down. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2018 05:50 PM PDT Got my new wall-mountable network rack in today from NavePoint! However, this thing shipped with some odd mounting hardware. I wonder if anyone has ever seen it before. https://photos.app.goo.gl/GFa4vURmriYx1sJq9 I am fairly sure this is meant to be a drywall mounting anchor, but I can't find any other anchor on the market like it. Not sure I want to trust my cabinet to the sturdiness of this thing. Edit: After expanding my search some, looks like they are meant for cinder blocks. [link] [comments] |
How to set static IPs with ActionTec m6240L Posted: 03 Aug 2018 05:03 PM PDT I have a FTTH setup in my new construction home and the router they have is an actiontec M6240L. I am trying to set static IPs for my devices but I cant figure out how to do it. I am logged into teh router via 192.168.1.1 but There isnt many options to choose. [link] [comments] |
Sanity check on my MoCA network. Or is it HPNA network? Posted: 03 Aug 2018 11:56 AM PDT Hi there, couple of days ago I was asking what to add network wise to my parents two story house. Now I went the MoCA route with 2 Actiontec ECB6200 adapters to add ethernet to a chromecast ultra( and eventually other devices) thats in the TV room on the first floor. And so far it works amazingly but I was wondering if I still need something else to add in terms of security and stability. As I was doing more research on these MoCA adapters, I noticed people were buying compatible MoCA PoE filters and splitters. So I opened the cable box on the side of the house and saw these https://i.imgur.com/OqndIRa.jpg https://i.imgur.com/6Dmi3YN.jpg This is where I am lost currently. It turns out from my research, ATT Uverse uses HPNA. Which would explain the 3-way splitter as there are 3 STBs in the house. That Antronix GLF-1002 PoE filter in the second picture must have been from Comcast (previous ISP) and the 2 way splitter isnt connected anywhere. Like the two outputs from this splitter arent connected to anything. So would I need to add a HPNA PoE filter (does this exist) to the input in the first picture? Or should I replace that 3-way splitter with a MoCA compatible one? I can try tracing the coaxial cables tomorrow on my day off. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2018 03:19 PM PDT Hi, We have a few IoT things which I read somewhere that as they're generally insecure, they'd be best placed on my guest network. In your opinion what should go onto a guest network, and what should go on a main network please? Thanks :) [link] [comments] |
Can't use my Wifi router as LAN for games Posted: 03 Aug 2018 02:29 PM PDT Hi all, I need some advice as I'm really not understanding why this is happening. I've tried many times to play LAN games with my girlfriend at home, always failing. The most recent one was Stardew Valley, but there were others. The setup is, we both have laptops - mine has Windows 10, hers is a Mac - and we're both connected to a 5G Wifi router. We can find our IPs, but when it comes to LANs, even if I take care to set the right permissions on firewalls, our computers just don't seem to see each other. I assume this could be to some errors in configuration either of the network or the router. Do you have any advice for this kind of situation? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2018 02:23 PM PDT I would like to learn about routers and what they do. I have already googled it so I know some basics. I would like to know the best router for my situation and also WHY it is the best router for my situation. Assume cost is no object. I'm looking strictly for the best performance. My setup: I have 1 computer hardwired which is my personal desktop, which I would like to have the fastest possible connection speed on. Nothing else is hardwired. I run the house and there is 5 other people that live in my house, so I have about 15-25 or so wireless devices that will be using the wi-fi (probably 5-6 TVs that stream netflix, 5-6 laptops, 6+ phones etc. will all be connected and possibly used at the same time). I prefer to have a specific channel for my own wi-fi devices (highest speed possible) and to have another specific wi-fi channel for the rest of the house (I don't care what speed it is). My ISP is Spectrum - 980/mbps. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2018 06:46 AM PDT I plug in one cable to port #1 and the LED for port#3 lights on. No connection at all, i cant access the web configurator without a single wired connection from the switch. I need help. I have a Video on how it turns on and the lights not acting normal compare to the working one but i cant upload it here i dont have the option to. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2018 02:17 PM PDT So my stepdad has been having buffering issue with streaming on his smart tv which is connected via ethernet to the base modem given to us by Verizon. The rest of the house is connected via wifi to an ASUS router and experiences no issues with buffering or load times of any kind. I was wondering if buying a low-mid priced router to connect the tv to via ethernet would increase the speed of its connection over that of the base modem (the tv is in a spot where it is not feasible to connect it to the other router). Sanity check before I buy new Ubiquiti items. Posted: 03 Aug 2018 08:11 AM PDT I currently have an RT-AC68U that I am going to be replacing. I was looking at finally jumping into the Ubiquiti arena with an EdgeX and ACLite. My home is only 1400 square feet. I have every room already hard wired (using two switches connected to my current router). The only things on WiFi are the things that don't have an ethernet port on them. I was placing the Edge in the same general area as my router now, and placing the APLite on the ceiling in roughly the center of the house. I was going to use the injector that comes with the ACLite to power the EdgeX. From what I have read I can have 4 wireless networks, which would be good since I am using 4 right now (2ghz, 5ghz, guest, and a 2ghz for home automation). Am I understanding the ACLite correctly in that it would still meet my needs in terms of wireless networks? Can the wireless networks exist on separate subnets or would I need an extra ACLite for that (I want to try to keep my automation stuff separate from the rest of the network)? Am I missing something or overlooking something? Is there a cheap (or at least not stupidly expensive) switch that I could use to split the PoE to the ACLite incase I wanted to get 2 to place at opposite corners of the house, or for some PoE security cameras? ATT U-Verse Tech Support is Trash and I need some REAL Assistance Posted: 03 Aug 2018 02:02 PM PDT Posted this on r/techsupport before I knew this sub existed. So the past month or two my internet has been randomly dropping 3-5 times a day and I have finally had time for myself to call att today. The lady I spoke with went ahead and made some changes on her end, she told me to make some changes on my end. And of course nothing much changed and my internet even dropped while I was on the phone with her. So far she made an appointment with a tech guy tomorrow, but depending on what I can learn from here will decide if I'll keep that appointment. But while on the phone with her what threw me off was when I asked her how much my download speed is actually supposed to be and she said 28 MEGABYTES! I have never reached 5 megabytes ever when downloading things. Consistently the highest it will go is 3.5mb. I then ask her if she means 28 megabits cause that literally equals 3.5mb. The tech support lady puts me on hold and says yes I just confirmed it with my colleagues it is 28 megabytes. Keep in mind I asked her that in the middle of her diagnostics, and what threw me off even more was that she wasn't baffled that I am supposed to be hitting 28 megabytes but the highest I go is 3.5 megabytes. For the reason that I mentioned it was in the middle of her diagnostics, she was like "okay so let me see if I can try something else". The original package I was she said was 18-24 , but she upgraded it for free to 15 - 25. The most that all of her diagnostics and upgrades did on her end brought me up to 3.7 mb instead of 3.5mb. What do you guys suggest I do? Should I upgrade the router or modem at all? Or should I bother AT&T till they give me what I'm "paying" for; which I'm still not 100% sure is 28 megabytes or megabits. That whole office could be a bunch of potatoes for all I know. Thanks for reading, hope you guys can help me out. EDIT: Also my computer is wired in. EDIT x2 and UPDATE: I understand the difference totally. I always have. The thing im concerned with as of right now is that I called the tech support again for the second time and asked like 5-8 times throughout our conversation if I am paying for 25 megabytes, and every single time the 2nd tech said yes. Throughout the conversation as I reiterated the question from vague to more and more detailed, the last time I really wanted confirmation I said, "So I feel like there might be a confusion in terminology. Are you sure its megabytes and not megabits? The tech confidently answered for the howmanyteenth time I asked, "Yes it is megabytes, and not megabits." I instantly said, "That's great I will be expecting the tech tomorrow!" [link] [comments] |
Ubiquiti ATT Fiber setup questions Posted: 03 Aug 2018 02:01 PM PDT I just want to make sure that my plan is correct for my setup. I have a total of 3 cat 5e drops in my apartment (1st and 2nd bedroom and living room). Currently the 2nd bedroom was crimped with an rj45 plug to connect to data for the ATT media converter (is this the proper term?) but I want to crimp the other two cat 5e to connect to my UniFi 8-port 60w switch. Is this the proper way to go about this? Setup will result in this: ATT Media converter -> ATT modem -> USG -> switch -> in-wall APs. (I'm going to eventually bypass the ATT modem at some point, so I will just use IP passthrough at first) Here is a picture of my panel: https://i.imgur.com/qhuxxry.jpg Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2018 01:06 PM PDT In my home we have a wifi router wich the whole main house has acces too. We also have a small home somewhat behind the main house which does not have wifi coverage. We can lay down a ethernet cabel to the small home. What's the best way to expand the wifi coverage to the small home. The small home 25, 30 meters away from the router. There is a budget and if any hardware is necassary please recommend me what. I live in the Netherlands if that matters. Thanks is advance. Posted: 03 Aug 2018 12:46 PM PDT So I recently got a laptop and instead of a normal rj45 port it has a mini rj45 port. Is there any difference in the actual cable? Could I buy mini rj45 ends and crimp them on to a normal cat 5e cable? Is there any issue with that? Also were would I even find mini rj45 ends? I have had a hard time finding them [EDIT] So I recently found out it is a Lenovo proprietary port. And the laptop is an x380 yoga [link] [comments] |
Need a wifi setup for elder parents' large house Posted: 03 Aug 2018 12:32 PM PDT So I'm having some trouble on finding the right upgrade for my parents Internet solution. They currently had the option to upgrade to 100mb up and down (previously 4 lol) and the $30 Linksys router, which was already bad, simply won't cut it anymore. Their house is rather large (4bed3bath) and has thick walls. On the positive side, I can set up the modem and router in the dining room, which is pretty much dead center in the house. My problem is that they are very technology impaired, so I can't rely on them being able to fix problems if the power goes out or if issues show up which can't be fixed by unplugging and plugging it back in. This makes me a little worried about trying meshes or access points... Is there a very easy and hassle free multi device solution I should look into? If not, is there a single powerful enough router you can recommend? I'm assuming a lot of regular routers will be better than their current cheap one, but not sure which one to go for. Looking for a new router to support a 3 floor home (gaming, work, browsing, streaming) Posted: 03 Aug 2018 12:19 PM PDT Hey everyone, I'm looking for some suggestions for a new router as the one we've had, has been crapping out on us repeatedly for a good while. I think its time for an upgrade, not a budget upgrade, but perhaps something that will last for a while! Just some information: we only have one router set up in the middle floor as of now, but we have 3 floors, so the reach isn't the greatest when ur on the top floor or the bottom floor. Furthermore, during peak usage there could easily be up to 6-7 people using the internet at one given time, where each person has at least two personal devices connected (cellphone and a personal computer). This is usually the most frustrating at night time when everyone is trying to relax after a long day at work i.e. streaming movies, gaming, facetime with S/O etc... bottom line: everyone's frustrated when things get laggy and borderline unusable. In terms of budget, I don't really have one (willing to spend 400-500), I've done some window shopping around best buy and staples and saw some 400-500 dollar routers that look like they could get the job done like those "gaming" oriented routers with like 6 antennas sticking out. But I digress, if I knew anything about wifi networks I would have made the decision to get a new router already, alas I have 0 clue as to what the hell I'm doing. So any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

Connected to somebody else's network? Posted: 03 Aug 2018 11:16 AM PDT My router died last week so I continue using the internet via the ethernet cable from my ISP plugged in the PC. Every time I turn on the PC tho, I need to enter some PPPoE credentials in order to connect. Not a problem right? Well now Firefox says that I "must log in to this network before you can access the internet". When I click the button I am greeted with a login page to TOTOLINK. My dead router brand wasnt this one, and I dont have any other routers in the appartment. I entered however "admin" as user and pass and I got in something like a settings menu. Now when I try to open any internet page it says "unable to connect". My question is what exactly is happening and how can I get back online? My ISP is not working now and will be able to answer my calls in the morning. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2018 10:53 AM PDT Hey guys, Trying to telnet my Netgear LB1120 modem so I can 'force' choosing/disabling LTE bands. I've found some resources online that can guide me through the commands lists but Im having trouble just accessing in the first place. Anyone ever done anything like this on a LTE modem like this? I've just tried to telnet the IP and port (looks like 5510 for those) but it will never connect. Disabled firewall completely, hooking straight up from ethernet jack to the PC. Any suggestions??
