Opinion: Fortnite, Google Play, and the state of Android Malware Posted: 03 Aug 2018 03:03 PM PDT If you've been following Android news at all, you no doubt have heard by now, that Epic Games has decided to skip the Play Store in publishing the Android port of their massively popular game, Fortnite. While their founder claims that " gamers will benefit from competition among software sources on Android" The reality is that this move was made in a attempt to avoid Google's 30% cut taken from all purchases made through Google Play. Although Fortnite is free to play, Epic Games has turned in a massive $1.2 billion in revenue from in-game purchases. Obviously, a 30% tax on mobile purchases represents a significant loss. Many Android users are angry at their decision to distribute the game via an APK on a website rather than through Play Store because they believe it open the door for cybercriminals to distribute malware through fake APKs. This is a valid concern, as many of scams are already being perpetuated online. The popularity of Fortnite among young kids makes this especially dangerous. A quick search on YouTube for "fortnite android" reveals several videos with links to shady sites offering APK downloads. This isn't a new issue either, the same thing happened when Pokemon Go first launched. The 120 day exclusivity deal with Samsung won't help either, as more people are going to bo looking for downloads once the game is out. Although the open nature of Android means that Epic Games is well within their rights to do this, I do believe that it has the potential to seriously tarnish both their reputation, as well as that of Android in general. As malware isn't really an issue on iOS, aside from jailbroken devices, due to Apple's strict walled garden approach. When the media hears that kids are being infected with malware by downloading a popular game on their Android, they will no doubt report that Android is less secure. However, there is a solution - that is for Google to make an effort to eliminate malware on Android. Google already has an antimalware solution built into Android, known as Play Protect, which constantly scans apps on over 2 billion Android devices, regardless of whether or not they come from the Play store. However, the detection rate is abysmal when compared to third party antivirus apps. This report from AV-TEST gives Play Protect a protection score of 0/6, due to the fact that it missed nearly 50% of the malware caught by third-party apps. I'm not saying that people should be using antivirus apps, many of them are full of ads and slow down the system. Instead Google should partner with, or possibly even acquire a major Android security firm, to improve the antivirus already loaded on every device. This would allow the open nature of Android to remain, while keeping users safe from malware. This approach is already working for Windows, a platform with a much higher risk of malware. The antivirus built into Windows 10, Microsoft Defender, is just as effective as third party solutions. So why doesn't Google do the same? Thanks for sitting through this long read, I'm not a professional writer or security expert, just a college student studying cybersecurity. This is my first time writing an article like this, so if you have any criticism/feedback please comment below! [link] [comments]

Instagram updating app outside Play Store. Posted: 03 Aug 2018 02:00 PM PDT So I noticed this screenshot while going through the settings on Instagram. The app will update directly from them instead of the Play Store. As far as I'm aware this is against the TOS of Google Play. My Instagram version is currently 56.0.0.13.78 which I installed from the Play Store. EDIT So after looking around and checking my apps, it seems to be a Samsung and probably other manufacturers that pre-bundle Facebook as part of the OS. The only way to stop the apps updating outside of the Play Store is do disable or delete Facebook App Manager. The setting should then be deleted from the app. [link] [comments]
