PSA: Regarding the Mi 6X and the Mi A2

    Posted: 09 May 2018 04:41 PM PDT

Due to all the misinformation spread by the press, a lot of people in the community seem to believe that the recently announced Mi 6X is going to be made into an Android One phone, the Mi A2 and so it's only natural to call the Mi 6X by that moniker and refer to them as one.

The problem is, such model does not exist. This idea is based on a chain of assumptions, without any remarkable rumours or confirmation from Xiaomi.

The Mi 5X came out in July last year and Xiaomi released the Mi A1 later in September. The Mi A1 was based on the Mi 5X, their dimensions and most of the hardware are the same but the software is completely different and the phones aren't compatible with each other. The 5X, codenamed tiffany, runs MIUI while the A1, codenamed tissot, comes with stock Android, just like any other device in the Android One programme. Running one model's software on the other requires porting (custom development).

That's it, that's the whole story of the Mi 5X and the Mi A1, there's nothing more to it or their connection. The sole fact that the Mi A1 was based on the Mi 5X makes the press think that a successor to the 5X automatically means a successor to the A1, which is none other than the Mi 6X running stock Android, so we should already call the Mi 6X the Mi A2.

So far Xiaomi hasn't said anything about a successor to the A1 being in the works and there have been no remarkable rumours on the successor coming either. There is no established connection between these two series and they do not depend on each other. It's possible that a second Android One phone is coming and it might be based on the Mi 6X but so far nothing confirmed that this is going to happen.

This recent article on XDA does shine some light on the matter and suggests this scenario, but it was posted way after people started calling the Mi 6X the Mi A2, which makes the point of this post stand. I wrote this post to stop misinformation spreading further and upend the misconceptions people had about the Mi A2 and the Mi 6X.

    Thanks for reading.

    Roborock S50 / S51 Questions!

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 05:42 PM PDT

Hello! I'm just to this subreddit, but I've been a Xiaomi fan for years. I know technically the Roborock S50 / S51 isn't a Xiaomi product, but it's included in the Mi Home ecosystem, so I thought it would be okay. I was debating on getting a Roomba 980 or the 2nd gen Xiaomi robot, but I've convinced myself to get the latter. I just have a few questions before I pull the trigger. Please be gentle! I'm wanting to go for the Rose Gold variant (S51), and I think I've read that this is a chinese-only version?

Will it still work in the US?

All of the S50/51's come with a chinese power cable. This is the same as the US plug, right? I won't have to buy another power cord?

I think I've seen different versions of these out there (country specific I think?). On a review on youtube I watched, the label on the bottom of the robot was in english, but I've yet to see a bottom picture in rose gold to see what language it's in. Does anyone in the US have a rose gold version of it that can answer that question? I know you can change the voice pack to english, but are there any other things I should be worried about from ordering the chinese rose gold version?

Sorry for all of these noob questions, but I've tried my best to dig through the internet to find these answers and I've come up with nothing. Thanks so much for your comments / help in advance! :)

Found a system crashing bug on Mi A1 Stock 8.1.0

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:09 AM PDT

So today when I felt the need to change my wallpaper as it been a while since I last changed my wallpaper, so I downloaded some high res wallpapers from Google Plus (yeah I occasionally use it but only for wallpapers), I applied it and the whole system just crashed, first error message was displayed that System UI has crashed and when I went to the Home Screen the screen started flickering making the phone totally unusable and unstable, the phone restarted multiple times ultimately leading to recovery screen telling that Android couldn't load, some files might be corrupted, perform a factory data reset.

I performed factory reset and tried to reproduce the bug, I found out this happens when you apply a large size image file (9MB+) as a wallpaper via the Simple Gallery app. If you try to apply a big image file as a wallpaper via another way say Google Photos or the stock launcher wallpaper applier it simply says the image cannot be applied as a wallpaper, but Simple Gallery doesn't give any similar warning and just applied the wallpaper causing the whole system to crash.

I have always used hi res wallpapers from Google Plus without any problems before, maybe this is a 8.1 Rom bug. So a heads up for others if you are having a Mi A1 updated to June 8.1.0 just don't use Simple Gallery app to apply wallpapers. This might happen with other gallery apps or any other app that doesn't give any warning, so for now use default wallpaper applier or Google Photos, also you can safely use Wallpaper apps since they generally use small size image files (less than 1 MB), I tested Backdrops and Resplash without any problems.

The image I used was a 18:9 ratio PNG file of around 10.9 MB in size. I don't know what the cause of problem here most likely it's a bug in the 8.1 update, or maybe even Simple Gallery app but that is extremely unlikely. Also is there any size limit for wallpapers in Android?

tl;dr - Used Simple Gallery app to apply a large size image file (10.9 MB) which caused the phone to become totally unstable, so just don't use Simple Gallery app to apply any manually downloaded wallpaper, use Google Photos or stock wallpaper applier to set wallpapers for now.

can you stream netflix HD with Redmi note 5?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:50 AM PDT

According to netflix only listed phones and phones with snapdragon, 630/ 660/ 670/ 835/ 845 can stream netflix in HD. Apparently redmi note 5 uses snapdragon 636 so does that qualify to stream netflix in HD? Can anyone of you with this phone confirm thank you.

Mix 2s Audio problems with adapter

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:52 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I got my new mix 2s this week and I am sad to say it has audio problems when using the included usb-C Jack adapter.

Right now Spotify works without problems with headphones, a home stereo, and my most recent car. Google play music has no jack-output at all with any device. Music instead is routed to internal speakers.

The strangest problem actually comes with my older car where ( equipped with a sony stereo with a front facing AUX in) there's a hiss, a noise stronger than the music. I tried every cable I had, in a friend's car with a similar stereo unit and the problem is the same. Instead, with a TRRS cable (one with also the microphone's ring) there are also clicks and pops.

Another problem happens when connected to my modern car via bluetooth: it sometimes disconnects for a second and starts playing music with the internal speaker at the same time, making an annoying echo due to the bluetooth delay.

I would like to keep this phone as I really like it but I found no fix. I'm considering returning the device as I work with audio professionally and not being able to play music is really a major flaw to me.

What's your experience? Did I get a broken device or is it a software issue?

MIUI version is MIUI Global 9.5 Stable (9.5.19.0 (ODGMIFA)

EDIT: after rebooting with the adapter inserted google play now works.

So, tl;dr audio works everywhere except in my car stereo.

Just ordered a mi mix 2 but hd streaming is worrying me.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 04:25 PM PDT

I've read a lot and it has to do with Widevine L3 and according to some people that isn't something that can easily be changed (or at all). I use my phone a lot for watching stuff so it is kind of a big deal to me. Does anyone know if this has been changed/fix with the global version? If not I may look at spending a little more and getting a different phone.

Suggestions for Redmi note 5 pro accessories?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 10:17 AM PDT

Can any one of you suggest me a tempered glass and a back cover? I just received my note 5 pro and I read that normal tempered glass won't cover edge to edge because of the curved glass, so which one should I pick up? The ones on Amazon are very expensive (₹500).

How scratch-resistent the Mi A1 screen really is?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 04:55 AM PDT

I put on the plastic screen protector that comes with the phone and it is scratched to hell and back, but the actual curved glass around it that it doesn't cover is completely scratchless. I'm thinking if I should just take the protector off, can anyone tell me how durable the normal screen is?

What's the best close-to-stock-Android but still usable theme for MIUI 9? So far I have only found half functioning ones

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 02:45 AM PDT

It's going to be a week and a half more before my Bootloader is unlockable so that I can flash Stock Android on my Redmi Note 5 AI.

Don't get me wrong, there are some aspects on MIUI 9 that I like but I'd still love the fluidity, simplicity and performance of stock Oreo.

I feel like MIUI is hampering amazing hardware. The Redmi Note 5 AI is an absolute bargain for 200USD, loved my Note 3 Pro and now i basically got an upgrade in every aspect for the same price at launch. Just gotta be patient for the unlock.

Just got the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S! + my initial thoughts

Just got the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S! + my initial thoughts

I just got my Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in the mail today! I've currently on the fence about upgrading from the Samsung Galaxy S8 to a new phone, and this is one that I've been considering a lot. I own some of the Xiaomi Pro HD Earbuds, and I love them, so I thought it'd be time to try one of their smartphones. Super excited to try it out and learn more about it as I continue to use it. I've taken some really good shots with it already!

So far I really like the ceramic design. The matte border is super sleek too. The display panel is honestly really nice considering it's an IPS panel. Really nice colors in my opinion. It's also super fast.

The one thing I've had a more major pet peeve with so far though is Snapchat, due to the placement of the front facing camera. I've been able to get the rotation to work in 180 degrees, but the camera/picture stays upside down until I take a photo. Any advice on that? Thanks!
