    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    Rules

    1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

WhatsApp sent me a Cease and Desist letter for simple notification manager app and may ban similar apps such as Tasker, PushBullet

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 05:55 AM PDT

Hey, I want to highlight this issue to you as soon as possible as it seems WhatsApp have been going too far in banning apps that doesn't even interact with their own app in anyway. I have an app on Google Play called DirectChat with close to 500K downloads which was even featured on XDA, AndroidAuthority and many others. Basically, this app uses Google's Notification Listener API to listen for incoming notifications and displays it to users in form of Facebook like ChatHeads and also lets you reply to those notifications within ChatHeads. This makes it easy for users to read & reply to different messengers on the fly without ever opening another app. It doesn't interact with any third party messengers or take their datas that may involve illegal methods, it simply fetches notification and displays it in bubbles form. There are hundreds of similar apps available on Google Play that performs the exact same function including Google's own Android Auto and widely recognized PushBullet app.

Now I don't see anything wrong in how these apps works and function since they are using Google's own public Notification API to fetch and display texts but WhatsApp lawyers just sent me Cease & Desist letter that I am violating their Terms & Services and should immediately terminate its service. I can understand them shutting down WhatsApp+ and other such modded apps that directly interfere with their service but how can a simple notification manager application is against their T&S. I don't know why I am getting targeted when these kind of apps have been available for a long time along with Google's own Android Auto app.

This email doesn't just harm my application but it means potentially all other notification manager apps that are available can be banned if WhatsApp continues to persuade their ill approach. Developers no longer have freedom to be creative and enhance user experience if big giants like them keep on tormenting them. I am a student myself and don't have the budget to hire a lawyer and go against them. Therefore I have nothing to defend for myself, my years of work and recognization that I have got during development will vanish just like that and career will take a huge hit. In the end, any new developer will have to be careful and think twice before any line of code if something can be held against them because even if they are right and are completely justified, they simply don't have the manpower to go against big giants.

I hope reddit can highlight my issue to others and also warn other developers that their years of work and effort may be in vain if we don't stand up against them now. Hopefully there will be a day soon when a developer won't have to be afraid to get bullied and doesn't have to put limitations to his ideas when he works for betterment of society.

People goinf from Android to iPhone - what was the most surprising (in a negative sense) change you weren't expecting?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 01:46 PM PDT

I'm planning to ditch Android after loyal 7 years. In all honesty, there's so many litttle and big things that I endured that I think I'm done. I've never had an iPhone, I couldn't justify getting one for years but I've been looking on the other side for quite some time hoping the grass may actually be greener over there.

However, I've been thinking what weird "features" or small irritating changes I may be surprised by that I take for granted with Android. I'm sure there are people that have used the system for a long time and tried iPhone life for a while. What's your experience like? What drove you crazy with Apple (except the obvious - I can't customize it the way I want etc)

Also, as I'm fairly accustomed to Google ecosystem, will I be able to still use those services in mostly uninterrupted, smooth manner or will I be tripping over trying to make it work against what Apple wants from me?

I found a system crashing bug on Mi A1 Stock 8.1.0

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:13 AM PDT

So today when I felt the need to change my wallpaper as it been a while since I last changed my wallpaper, so I downloaded some high res wallpapers from Google Plus (yeah I occasionally use it but only for wallpapers), I applied it and the whole system just crashed, first error message was displayed that System UI has crashed and when I went to the Home Screen the screen started flickering making the phone totally unusable and unstable, the phone restarted multiple times ultimately leading to recovery screen telling that Android couldn't load, some files might be corrupted, perform a factory data reset.

I performed factory reset and tried to reproduce the bug, I found out this happens when you apply a large size image file (9MB+) as a wallpaper via the Simple Gallery app. If you try to apply a big image file as a wallpaper via another way say Google Photos or the stock launcher wallpaper applier it simply says the image cannot be applied as a wallpaper, but Simple Gallery doesn't give any similar warning and just applied the wallpaper causing the whole system to crash.

I have always used hi res wallpapers from Google Plus without any problems before, maybe this is a 8.1 Rom bug. So a heads up for others if you are having a Mi A1 updated to June 8.1.0 just don't use Simple Gallery app to apply wallpapers. This might happen with other gallery apps or any other app that doesn't give any warning, so for now use default wallpaper applier or Google Photos, also you can safely use Wallpaper apps since they generally use small size image files (less than 1 MB), I tested Backdrops and Resplash without any problems.

The image I used was a 18:9 ratio PNG file of around 10.9 MB in size. I don't know what the cause of problem here most likely it's a bug in the 8.1 update, or maybe even Simple Gallery app but that is extremely unlikely. Also is there any size limit for wallpapers in Android?

tl;dr - Used Simple Gallery app to apply a large size image file (10.9 MB) which caused the phone to become totally unstable, so just don't use Simple Gallery app to apply any manually downloaded wallpaper, use Google Photos or stock wallpaper applier to set wallpapers for now.
