Living in a Chromium malware nightmare on my grandmother's computer

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 03:26 PM PDT

Hi everyone. Went to go visit my grandmother and she told us that "Ask.com keeps popping up" and when my husband and I went to investigate it we found that a malicious version of Chromium has found it's way onto her computer. She has Windows 10 and tries to primarily run Microsoft Edge, however whenever she runs it Chromium immediately pops up.

First we ran Rkill, Malware Bytes Anti-Malware, AdwCleaner, and then HitmanPro. All of them were able to detect threats and "cleaned" them or "deleted" them, but the Chromium remained.

Next, we followed all of these YouTube videos (in order) step by step: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvCLSF0Sw98

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Wj9AK061UI

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr4Ukns-5BE

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC_RP2CglZc

These videos include running regedit and deleting anything related to Chromium, ending all Chromium programs through Task Manager, and dragging and dropping all Chromium programs from C:/Users/AppData/Chromium into the recycling bin, one by one. We have also "disabled" it in Task Manager, but it keeps popping up with Microsoft Edge.

The big problem we are running into is that the Chromium's location file (chrome.exe) keeps regenerating. I haven't been able to find anything about that so far. One YouTube video talked about a program you should delete that is a malicious regenerator (I think it was called GamesLog), however we couldn't find that in our files. No matter what we do, no matter how closely we follow all of these instructions, the program just keeps regenerating. I was hoping you guys could help me out and I would visit my grandmother again tomorrow with any insight you may have.

Internet stops working when I use any of the browsers

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 12:25 AM PDT

    Hi everyone.

I have really weird issue with my internet connection. I have Netgear N 300 wireless router and Alienware R4 laptop.

Everything was working smoothly for years until a month ago. Whenever I open any of the browsers (Mozilla, Chrome, IE) internet works for some amount of time (1-5 min) and then it stops working. After 5 min it starts working again and it works until I start browsing again. If I don't use browser and just download stuff or play games on Steam Internet works normally. Problem starts once the browser is open.

I have other devices (phones, tablets, laptops, TV) that use the same internet and it works fine on them however when it stops working it stops for all devices.

I have taken my laptop to other wifi spots and it works normally there. There is some kind of problem between my laptop and my router.

I've updated firmware in router and all drivers on laptop but that didn't help. My network adapter is Killer Wireless 1435.

Any ideas that I can try to solve this problem that is making me crazy are highly appreciated.

    Thanx in advance.

Phone's hotspot over Wi-Fi not functioning

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 04:09 AM PDT

    Hello everybody,

I do not know if there was already a problem like this one posted here, I have searched a bit on the internet, however and did not found an answer to it. I've got an iPhone 5C and during my trips I don't always have Wi-Fi, so I bought a pack with 20Gbs per month. Anyway, I'm more used of running things on my laptop, not to metion it being a lot quicker for me, since my phone lags a bit. And the problem that I'm running into for more than a week now, is that I cannot connect to my phone's personal hotspot via Wi-Fi. I've got it set up and everything and I can press connect, in the end I get an error saying that it failed to connect, HOWEVER, I do see the blue line at the top of my phone blinking that says (1 Conncetion), but it never stays lit, it blinks for 5-10 times and goes off. I don't have any problems connecting to the PH(personal hotspot) via USB , so I wouldn't want to think that it is my phone's fault.

Outside of rewriting drivers is there anything I could do? Anybody ran into the same problem and knows the fix?

    Cheers,

    MrWhoBoughtAnIphoneAndNowKindOfRegretsIt

4chan is up, but all boards are frozen

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 03:45 AM PDT

I can browse any thread and view images, but it won't let me reply due to 'captcha error' and no updates since the past hour. I've disabled my extension (4chanX) and deleted cookies/browsing history to no avail. Is it the same for anyone else?

Just built PC couple of weeks ago, now HDD won't load properly.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 02:09 AM PDT

I got the Seagate 4TB BarraCuda SATA 6Gb/s 256MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive (ST4000DM004)

Error-checking and defragmenting stuck at 0% and it gets stuck when I try to cancel the process as well. When I try to open it in explorer, it takes a long time to load then gets stuck at the end. I did virus checks, came back negative for viruses. What do.

Is my hard drive already dying?

Office's HP DesignJet 4000 needs its HDD replaced, don't have the image for the disk and all download links are dead

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 04:46 AM PDT

As the title says, our office's DesignJet 4000 apparently chooched its last like 3 months before I started working here and its drive is so dead that it won't even try to spin or click. This is a problem because the download links for the disk images don't work and buying a new imaged drive is $170+.

Does anyone know where I can acquire a DesignJet 4000 disk image for this thing? I have a replacement drive, it just needs an image.

Windows recovery mode after switching laptop to SSD

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 03:55 AM PDT

I recently bought a 120gb SSD to replace my laptops 500GB HDD. I got the HDD out plugged both the HDD and the SSD to my desktop and cloned the HDD to SSD with EaseUS Backup. But if I put the SSD in my laptop and try to boot I get a blue screen saying recovery with this error code: 0xc000000e

After this, I tried booting with the SSD on my desktop and there were no problems. But only the HDD works on the laptop.

SSD randomly freezes, sometimes taking the computer with it.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 01:22 AM PDT

I'm on Windows 10 with a Ryzen 3 1200(overclocked to 3700mhz), a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB(for Windows and other things), and a hard disk I cannot remember right now.

There has been this really weird problem ever since I built it where somewhat randomly(though it tends to happen when I'm doing a lot of file moves) my SSD just goes unresponsive, nothing loads in on Discord or Chrome, and task manager shows my overall disk usage at 50%, with the top processes taking 0.1mb/s.

I have checked the SATA connections, but they are in fine. I tried turning off indexing on my SSD, but it actually happened while I was doing that. Any idea on what is happening? If you need any more info, I'll happily provide.

How to change Mouse DPI on Razer Deathadder Chroma?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 03:19 AM PDT

So i've been using my deathadder chroma for a while and it works great, but recently i've seen a lot of things saying that lowering your DPI will help you a lot in games. So I tried to change my "pointer speed" in the mouse options on windows 10 but that did not affect anything in game. I also tried to download Razer synapse, but the deathadder chroma is not supported by that program. If you have any advice please help.

While charging laptop's Memory and CPU usage almost maximum

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 02:36 AM PDT

    Lenovo G510 core i5-4200m 2.50GHz, RAM 6GB, Windows 7, HDD 1TB

The issue is when laptop is charging it really slows down to the point where i have to wait for like a min for a browser to open, even if it's the only program i'm using at the moment. And it's almost impossible to use laptop if it's charging whether i want to watch a movie, youtube video or play some old game that doesn't require much. Right now i'm downloading a game from steam and laptop got laggy again so i decided to check in Windows Task Manager what the hell is wrong with it - so it's only steam running and laptop charging - CPU usage 97% and Memory usage 4,66 out of my 6gb. If i disconnect the charger CPU usage 20-25% top and Memory usage 1.40-1.80gb.

I haven't changed my power plan, it is balanced both when charging and when not. For whatever reason laptop decides to use the maximum while charging and i don't like it, because it wears hardware off for nothing and makes laptop almost impossible to use.

I tried installing lenovo power plan software and installing clean windows on a laptop but it still uses maximum out of CPU and Memory when plugged in to charger. Maybe you can suggest something.

My Acer Predator XB270HU monitor isn't detected on a cold boot, but then works on a warm boot

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 12:17 AM PDT

I have a Acer Predator XB270HU set as my primary monitor and a LG 24EA53 as my secondary monitor. my GPU is a gigabyte GTX 1080, the predator is connected via displayport and the LG is connected with DVI. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-X99P-SLI.

When I boot up the computer in the morning or after the computer has been shut down for at least an hour, the motherboard screen, windows login and desktop all appear on the LG (secondary) monitor and the Predator (primary) is not recognised at all. However, when I restart the computer, it works completely fine. The mobo screen etc all pop up on the Predator. There is no other graphics issues with my GTX 1080, which I assume is causing the problem.

It almost seems like the GTX 1080 doesn't recognise the Predator quick enough on a cold boot and just defaults to the LG for some reason. I have tried using different cables for the LG (DVI and HDMI) and nothing changed. I would try a different connection for the Predator but there is only a displayport.

This problem is very specific and hard to google so I have come here. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

[Help] Laptop uses integrated graphics for 144hz display instead of gpu

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 02:24 AM PDT

    First of all specs:

    Nvidia 1060 6gb

    i7-6700hq

    16gb Ram

    Windows 10

    Predator XB1

Hi, so I just bought a new monitor which will eventually be hooked up to a tower, but for now I can use 144hz on my monitor with my laptop via thunder bolt 3 to display port. The problem is that on the desktop screen it uses itegrated graphics to go to 144hz, which I would like to use the graphics card. When playing games, it properly uses the graphics card without any fault. When not playing games gpu does not detect my monitor.

How do I make my monitor use my gpu all the time?

Hearing rattling at high fan speed from a prebuilt.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 12:07 AM PDT

I just recently bought a CyberPower PC and was getting high temperatures while playing (mid 80C) so I changed my fan curve using MSI Afterburner. I don't have any overclock applied. At around 80-90% fan speed in the 70-80C range, I start to hear a rattling that I think is coming from my rear case fan. Here is a Youtube video of the issue while playing Rainbow Six Siege but you might have to turn up volume in order to hear it. Is this due to a defective part or do I just need to readjust something in the PC to stop the rattling? My case fans are from Apevia.

My parts list just in case:

    Motherboard B350M BAZOOKA

CPU AMD Ryzen 7 2700X with a Cooler Master CPU cooler

    GPU Nvidia GTX 1070-Ti

    SSD WD Green 240GB

    HDD Toshiba DT01ACA200 2TB

    RAM TEAMGROUP-UD4-2400 2x8GB

Red band and blue lines down screen when I switch from desktop to Chrome rapidly

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 12:03 AM PDT

    https://i.imgur.com/XWFAUIk.jpg

Build: Lenovo Ideapad 720s-13ARR OS: Windows 10 Programs open: Google Chrome

I noticed this when I switched rapidly between the desktop and Google Chrome via the button in the right hand bottom corner.

The picture taken was done via slow motion camera + a screenshot, because it only appears on the screen for a fraction of a second - but it is consistently the same.

Is this an issue I should worry about? It seems to only happens to Chrome (didn't happen to Word or PowerPoint in my tests).

Realtek HD Audio Manager missing [Asus ROG Strix B350-F Gaming]

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 01:54 AM PDT

I have just clean installed my PC using the latest Windows 10 Pro 64bit that I got from the "MediaCreationTool"

After I clean installed, I ran Windows update. I then downloaded and installed the Chipset directly from AMD.

Then there's the audio drivers that I got from Asus website. Currently there's 4 drivers available. Latest version is 147MB, 2nd latest is 645MB, 3rd latest is 642MB, 4th latest is 466MB. The size of these drivers is all over the place. Not only that, the latest driver doesn't install Realtek manager, nor Sonic Studio. I believe the 3 other drivers did install Sonic Studio, but non of them installed Realtek manager. Yes, I have tried all 4 of them.

When I built my PC for the first time back around October 2017, I believe I installed the 4th latest version which did include Realtek manager, and Sonic studio, but now it only installs Sonic studio.

I also downloaded the latest driver directly from Realtek's website, but still no Realtek manager. I have tried looking in "Control Panel" and then change to large icons, but Realtek manager is not located there. Then I looked into "C:\Program Files (x86)\Realtek" and "C:\Program Files\Realtek" but the GUI exe doesn't do anything. I launch it, and nothing.

Why do I need the Realtek manager? It was the software I used to separate my headphones from my speakers. Without Realtek manager, my audio only comes from my headphones when my headphones are plugged in, even tho the audio settings says "speakers". If I disconnect my headphones from my PC, the audio will come out from my speakers.

With Realtek manager I could separate headphones from speakers. If I changed the audio to "speakers" in Windows, the sound would come out of the speakers. When I changed the audio to "headphones" in Windows, the sound would come out of the headphones, even when both audio sources were plugged in.

I should note that with the current configuration I have, my speakers are connected on the back of my PC, where my headphones are connected on the front of my case. I can remember when I plugged in an audio source to my computer, I would get a popup message about "Is this your headphones?" or "Is this your speakers?". It would clearly identify when I disconnected or connected an audio source to my PC, and it could identify what headphones were, and what's speakers were. Now without Realtek manager, no popup. It treats headphones and speakers as one. Well kinda. it always says "Speakers" in Windows, but I would only get sound from my headphones and not from my speakers when headphones were plugged in, and if I disconnected my headphones the sound would come out from the speakers, but the Windows audio setting is always set to "speakers". Without Realtek manager, I don't even see "headphones" source, nor can I see that I have 2 audio sources connected when both are connected to my PC.

Edit: This is the Realtek manager settings I used to separate headphones from speakers back when I had Realtek manager.

    HDD bad sectors

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 11:40 PM PDT

    Hey there.

I have a MSI notebook with SSD and HDD as storage. A few months ago, I started having problems to access the HDD and the only way to fix it was using Windows Diagnostic Tools. But lately the problem can be only fixed by formatting the HDD.

I did some research and found out that this HDD may be not reliable anymore and that it's close to its end.

Also, I used some third party tools to diagnose the hard drive. It has some bad sectors, but most of it is in great shape.

With this, I have some questions:

    1. Even if I buy another one, how do I isolate those bad sectors? Or this will spread out? I mean, is there any way to fix it?
    2. Should I buy another HDD? If so, do you have any recommendations?

I can supply with more technical information if needed.

    Thanks in advance =]

GPU Not working, despite monitor working while plugged into it?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 04:57 AM PDT

I have just finished a new build with my old GTX 970 and old m.2 SSD with windows. Everything worked a treat except my GPU is apparently not working. Games say it is using on board graphics with garbage frame rates, however both in speccy and device manager it is showing up and my monitor is plugged into it working fine! I have updated all my motherboards drivers and the GPU drivers to no avail. I have made certain the 8 pin and 6 pin power connectors are plugged in. There is a caution looking icon in device manager I've never seen before. (https://imgur.com/a/Qu8T2Hc)

The card used to be the 2nd GPU in an SLI setup if that might have anything to do with it.

Netgear C6300's wifi connections disappearing. Is my laptop to blame?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 04:49 AM PDT

    How's it going r/techsupport ,

Brand new Netgear C6300 router/modem. Brand new Cox cables ran. Brand new service. My xbox is hard wired, and my T.V, phone, and surface pro 4 are all connected via wifi. After a hard reset, the wifi connections become visible and all my devices are able to connect with no problems. Within a day or two the devices lose connection and when I try to reconnect to the wifi, the signal doesn't even show up on the available wifi connections. Wired xbox runs flawlessly, but the wifi keeps disappearing. I've read somewhere that computers and laptops can block off your wifi when they go into sleep or power saving mode. Could this be the case? When I try to go in and disable the "allow this PC to turn off the device" for the router but I can't seem to access the "power management" tab. When I hit "properties" on the netgear modem under devices, there is no "power managment" tab.

Sorry for the long post, I am trying to include all info for accuracy. I'm not home atm but will be later today if any more info is needed.
