What is (generally speaking) the cheapeast laptop brand ?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 01:48 PM PDT

If I don't care much about anything but the hardware inside a laptop (i.e. I disregard brand name, appearance, flexibility, touch capabilities, operating system, additional software...etc), what's my best be for a brand that will sell laptop close to the retail component prices + packaging ?

    Preferably one with some versatility.

Is there a significant speed difference between a 2.3GHz processor and a 3.1 GHz processor if all other aspects of the laptops are the same?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 01:46 PM PDT

I am trying to decide between two MacBook Pros, and they are the same in all relevant aspects except for the processor speed. Would the 3.1 GHz processor be significantly better than the other one? Both are Intel 7th Generation Dual-Core i5.

Thank you very much for the help.

    Looking for a good laptop

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 01:24 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy a laptop with the sleekness of a Mac and the performance of most windows computers. I am in no way knowledgeable in this field so if this is a bad idea for a computer (this is both for school as well as leisure- but not gaming) I am open to better suggestions!

How much better is the 1070 Max-Q than the 1060?

I'm lookin to buy the new Razer 15, but I am wondering if the dishing out the extra $200 for the 1070 over the 1060. Are there any significant performances when choosing the former? (I play games such as Destiny 2, Doom, PUBG)

Should I buy a 2 in 1 or a traditional laptop and a graphics tablet? I am looking for a laptop for hobby game development and 3D/2D art.

Searching for a laptop for college.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 09:18 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1400 is absolute max, $700~$1000 is probably the sweet spot. United States.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life would be helpful but is not required, I suppose it will need to be able to hold out for a class, otherwise I would like the best specs.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? A little heavy is okay but I would prefer it to be on the lighter side of the spectrum as it will be carried to and from classes in a backpack.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 64 bit

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Prefer between 14" and 15.6" but it will mostly be for schoolwork so it doesn't need to be huge, preferable not larger than that scale.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Will be used for engineering classes, I am not aware of specific programs. I might play games but odds are I won't very often if at all.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I do enjoy a good 60FPS experience on games like CS:GO, but this is a preference, and not necessary as it is unlikely that I will use it for games much.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A reliable build quality above everything else would great as I would like to be able to use it for ~4 years. An optical drive would also be preferred.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The school has a list of recommended minimums here, along with a link to buy an HP Probook 440 G5 from their bookstore for ~$1500. I found one on Newegg for much cheaper, as well as a similar laptop here. I'd like something cheaper than from the bookstore, and I assume that there are better laptops for cheaper. Any suggestions?

    Ideapad 720s or Zenbook UX430UN?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 12:53 PM PDT

I'm not too tech savvy and I'm looking for a new laptop, right now im considering either a Lenovo Ideapad 720s 14 or an Asus Zenbook UX430UN since they have the same specs for the same price.

    Intel® Core™ i5-8250U processor NVIDIA GeForce MX150 8 GB RAM 256 GB SSD

Which one should I pick? Or should I search for an entirely different option?

The laptop will be used for school and some very light gaming. It should have a good balance between weight/battery/specs. My budget is around $1000-1200, and I'm from Denmark. (so 6000-7999 dkk)

tbh as long as it's better than my current dying Asus N56DY im fine.

    Good laptop for college/light gaming?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 12:39 PM PDT

So far, I've tinkered with going for a 12" MacBook with the i5. I love the idea of having a laptop that will last for a long time (through my next 2 years of college + grad school). They're sleek, clean, durable, and can't get a virus. The price is steep and not the most "specs for you buck" but those other added incentives really speak to me. Plus, the only game I plan to run is Minecraft, and maybe Rocket League. I think it would run them no problem (tell me if I'm wrong). But, what other laptops under $1300 can do this? Have stellar build quality? Look sleek and clean? I'm open to not getting a Mac, but it has to be the right one.

Budget: $1300 Uses: Microsoft Office / Games (listed above) Needs to last me about 5 years without any major hiccups.

Please let me know what's out there!

Razer Blade 15 vs Aero 15x v8- which is better?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:42 AM PDT

Hey, I am considering both of these devices for purchase and cannot decide which is better. My priorities are as follows

    • Great battery life
    • Expandable storage
    • No software issues/hardware issues
    • Superior performance
    • Durability
    • Portability

What doesn't matter: - Webcam placement - Price (willing to spend extra on the better device)

I have also heard of extensive software issues with the aero 15x that cause degredation in battery life etc. Battery life is by far the most important aspect to me, followed by no software or hardware issues and finally by expandable storage.

People who own these devices or have any experience with them, which is better and why? Are thre reasons to pick one over the other that I did not specify above?

Also, where has the best student discounts when buying? Thanks!

Help with Alienware r5 17 cpu heat

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:51 AM PDT

My laptop I just got ^ Alienware r5 17 was running hot during games ( cpu and gpu upwards 80° - 90° ) at some times so I got a cooling pad which helps a ton and now my gpu only gets to higher 70s during games but my cpu is running insanely hot now at like 60-70 idle and 88-95 during games ( at some points usually Reston at about 80 ) What could be the cause of my cpu running so hot? Even while idle, or is that normal temps for a laptop? It's a i9 cpu

So, guys I bought an Acer Aspire E5-575 in March and it has been giving me issues since the day I bought it.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:16 AM PDT

I bought the laptop off of the Currys/Pc World eBay store (yes they have an eBay store). I hardly ever use the laptop. If I'm being honest I have turned it on maybe 12 times over the last 4 months.....seriously! I don't really get the chance to use it as I'm too busy normally. Haven't really installed anything onto it other than visualisation and analysis softwares (python, tableau, alteryx etc.). The laptop takes a good 20 minutes to turn on and load up the log in screen and is so slow when it IS on. The laptop is BRAND NEW (supposedly). So, I called up Acer and asked them when the warranty had begun....they said the warranty had finished before I had even bought the laptop.....in February! Now, I am thinking of contacting PayPal because they have a 180 day money back guarantee if the item isn't as described. So, I was thinking of telling PayPal that the laptop is not brand new based on the fact that the warranty had ran out before I had even bought the laptop. Do you guys think I would be able to get a refund based on this?? I don't want to get them to repair it (even though it would be free) cause I feel as though this laptop is always going to be slow and crap. What do you guys think? What do you suggest?

Looking for a Dell XPS clone that has a 1060/1070 GPU

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 08:05 AM PDT

Hi all! I was hoping you could help me settle on a laptop. The Dell XPS is literally everything I'm looking for in a laptop EXCEPT for the GPU. I work in film and one of the programs I use most on set is DaVinci Resolve for color grading which is highly reliant on the GPU. As such, I need a 1060/1070 since the 1050ti just wont cut it. Other things I value: professional aesthetic, battery life, color accurate screen*, and not having to worry that my laptop will brick itself in 1-2 months. Cost isn't much of a concern. Under $2200 is preferable but willing to go up to $2800 if necessary. Thanks all!

[Canada] 14-13.3" Future-proof Laptop for Work/School, No Gaming

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 07:38 AM PDT

Hello, I am looking for a laptop this month during back to school season with a budget of around $1000. Give or take about $100 if there's something that's really recommended. I am going for one that's somewhat future-proof, solid build that I can run to the ground without worrying about performance being out of date. I will not be doing any gaming. Just basic tasks for school, video watching, occasional light audio editing (I have my own USB interface/recording/playback device).

    Must haves, non-negotiable:

-14" screen, willing to go to 13.3 if it really isn't that much of a difference for eye strain and working on typing, etc.

    -No less than 256GB SSD

    -No less than 8GB RAM

    -8th gen processor

    -USB C support

    Nice to have's (future proof):

-USB C charging. Should this be something to really look for? I don't want to have to bite the bullet only for the same model to have been updated only a few months later with the updated features

-Matte screen. Willing to forgoe it if the screen is good quality without it, but otherwise I like the anti-glare of the Asus linked below.

Here are some that I am looking at. I live in Canada so please be aware of price differences. If there's other models of different brands that I may not be aware of, please let me know:

    Asus: https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/asus-zenbook-14-laptop-grey-intel-core-i5-8250u-256gb-ssd-8gb-ram-windows-10/11558814.aspx

-This one seems to fit what I need but I think it's overpriced at the moment. If it goes on sale I am highly considering it. I've heard complaints of heat and higher amounts of fan use though, would that not be an issue if I am not going gaming or graphics-intensive tasks?

    Acer: https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/acer-swift-3-14-laptop-silver-intel-quad-core-i5-8250u-256gb-ssd-8-gb-ram-windows-10/10751901.aspx?

-Cheaper alternative, but the build quality and screen aren't as good as the Asus.

Help Deciding between 2 laptops - Lenovo Ideapads

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 07:22 AM PDT

I'm looking at upgrading Wifes Laptop. she has a 12yr old Acer laptop currently.

The plan is to buy something that has an optical drive, and take out out, put the Large HDD in a carriage into that slot and buy a new 250GB SSD for the main drive. will be a long term purchase probably should last another 8 years.

It's just going to be use for day to day, no gaming. light business and multimedia work. sitting plugged in most of the time.

I'm looking at one from the 300 series and another from the 100 series. Not sure if there is much difference the quality between the 2 series' but if it is just outer build/chassis quality, I'm not tooo concerned. i'll probably upgrade the RAM on for 100 series model also.

any thoughts on these 2 models?

How much more is a 9570 worth than a 9560?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 07:19 AM PDT

I've managed to find an XPS 15 9570 and an XPS 15 9560 with similar specs, but a price difference of about £100. The specs are as follows:

    9570: (£1130)

    • i7-8750H
    • 16GB DDR4 RAM
    • GTX 1050Ti, note: I've seen some people on this subreddit state that this is a max-q card, but it's not described as such anywhere that I can find on the listing on Dell's site, so I'm uncertain as to whether it is or not.
    • 512GB NVMe SSD

    9560: (£1030)

    • i7-7700HQ
    • 16GB DDR4 RAM
    • GTX 1050
    • 512GB PCIe SSD

I'm concerned that the 1050Ti in the 9570 will be a max-q (and therefore not with substantially greater performance in games than the 1050), and further that its performance (as well as the 8750H) will be severely limited by the thermal limitations of the XPS 15 in general. So, my question is this: is it worth paying the extra £100 for a 9570, given these concerns?

    Laptop advice

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 06:09 AM PDT

Hi, I'm looking for something for work at home use and just personal use.

Browsing the web, watching movies, downloading music, storage of photos and videos etc.

Nothing intensive for work since it is just emails. Could someone recommend me a laptop that I won't need to replace in 5 years +?

    Price point 1k-1.5k.

    Any help would be appreciated.

https://www.costco.ca/Lenovo-Ideapad-330-Laptop%2c-i7-8550U.product.100423107.html for example is something that they recommended me but I assume this isn't great...
