    Dual-booting Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:57 AM PDT

Hello, Reddit! I have recently had an issue with dual-booting Windows and Ubuntu. I have installed Ubuntu in all of the same steps as highlighted by this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNeJvujdB-0 . When I power on my system, it takes me straight to Windows 10 rather than to Grub. I have safe boot disabled and fast startup off. I look forward to your responses!

[Question] Ive got a question about partitions and hard drives...

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 08:20 AM PDT

So i have my hard drive set to three partitions, one running Windows 10 one with Elementary OS and the last is Ubuntu 18.04. Ive just bought a new SSD and want to swap out hard drive but how do i go about copying over all the partitions? What options do i have? Should i just make new partitions and fresh install all the OS's or is there a way to copy over everything? Thanks in advance.

    Security of Linux

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 07:09 PM PDT

Hey guys, I was just wondering if should be worried about my security on Linux?

I'm running GalliumOS on a Chromebook with Firefox and the uBlock Origin extension. I use it for entertainment mostly so I'm only going to download popular, non sketchy applications and no sketchy websites.

Being the worrier that I am, how risky would it be to sign into my accounts? (Google, Netflix, etc) I won't be saving the passwords on it

    Rhel yum command doesn’t work

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 02:42 PM PDT

I've just stared to use Linux(rhel) in a vm, VMware 11. Whenever I have to use yum, I get error like this. So far I've tried to change subscriptions settings in repo.d from(enabled=0). This doesn't work. I've also tried making my own local repo but it needed me to mount an iso file which I do have but don't know how to mount. I've tried registering to rhn but it won't allow me, always throws this Exception. How do I get past this problem? Thank you.

How can I make Linux boot directly to Emacs (no window manager)?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 01:48 PM PDT

This OS partition must have only the minimum requirements to install and run the latest version of Emacs in its graphical version, with UTF-8 support. I use the Adobe Source Pro font, and org-bullets to prettify my Org.

After the first install, internet connection is not required. Because the configuration directory will be just a symlink to my "official" configurations, I wouldn't even install or update packages Emacs from this partition. What I need is a system that boots directly to Emacs and nothing else. Apart from the non-graphical TTYs for system administration, I will use no other programs. Even though I currently use Manjaro, I have no preferences regarding distribution, but I wouldn't like to spend too much time configuring it, because my objective is having a functional Emacs machine for my writing tasks, not educating myself about Linux.

edit: just to make it clear, this not satire playing on the old joke about Emacs being an operating system. I really wish to have this question answered.

    Kubuntu 17.10.1 64bit on dell g3 15 wont install

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:37 AM PDT

I bought this laptop http://a.co/iXOmpZl hoping to install kubuntu on it and turn it into my daily driver. I purchased the windows version so I would still have a full windows install if I ever needed it. I loaded up kubuntu on a 128gb USB drive and I got this error message https://imgur.com/a/GDVu5px

I don't think it's a problem with the iso as I have previously installed it on another computer and when checking the USB drive for defects I found no problems

Recommendations for video player with real randomize function

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 07:59 AM PDT

    Hey all

In both SMPlayer and VLC, when using the randomize function the same few videos are showing in a higher frequency than they should, from thousands of files, leading me to believe that the randomize function of each isn't as random as they ought to be

Any suggestions for players that actually randomize? TIA

Ubuntu Server - How do I set a static IP?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 06:41 PM PDT

Everything I've found tells me to edit the /etc/network/interfaces file. I change eth0 (ens0 in my VM) to static and input my IP, gateway, dns, and subnet settings I want and after bringing the interface down and back up it still gets its IP from DHCP. Also after a reboot. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Without mentioning Unix, Linux, or Stallman AT ALL, what is GNU?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 08:32 AM PDT

I've been searching for this for a couple of days. Read tens of articles and Reddit thread, and I can't understand what GNU is. All the articles talk about it being a free (as in freedom) replacement of Unix, about Stallman, and how it combines with the Linux kernel it makes a complete operating system.

I know what a Kernel is. I know what a Desktop Environment is. I know what a bootloader is. Where does GNU falls between those 3? What is it exactly? What does it do?

    xplayer-video-thumbnailer size issue

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 02:56 AM PDT

I've been trying to take thumbnail contact sheets for a video and it all works but I can't seem to make the size -s option work. Here's the command:

    xplayer-video-thumbnailer -s 256x256 -g 60 ~/Downloads/project/project.mp4 ~/Downloads/project/project_pics~

I tried different sizes, putting it after the -g, putting the size in between double quotes and still nothing.

    I'm on Linux Mint 19.

Thanks a lot for taking a look, cheers!
