Gigabit transfer speed from workstation to home server is maxing out at 112 MB/s? Need tips please! Posted: 29 Jul 2018 04:57 PM PDT I do video editing on my home workstation and save versions to my home server. Both are on cat6 cables with a D-Link gigabit (DGS-108) switch between them. When I try to transfer files between them I am maxing out at 112MB/s. Is this typical? Any tips? Workstation drive is SSD and Server has multiple 7200 RPM drives. Thank you to all and any help! Recommendations for ideal networking set-up for physical and virtual computers with VLANs Posted: 29 Jul 2018 07:20 AM PDT I'm trying to plan out a network before pulling the trigger on some new equipment but can't find solid resources on the best way to set it up. Here is essentially what I want to do: link Currently thinking about getting a Qotom i3/i5 mini-PC for pfSense which would be directly connected to a Netgear R6700 to be used as a WAP. pfSense would also be directly connected to a managed switch (something like a Netgear GS108Tv2) which supports VLAN tagging. In an ideal work, I would create 3 separate VLANs in pfSense:
Is it possible to assign computers to the VLAN from pfSense reliably based on MAC address? If so, it seems like an ideal way to have wifi devices like laptops and phones on the same VLAN as ethernet connected desktops. However, can a generic commercial router like the R6700 be purposed as a WAP that passes VLAN tags? I can't find a solid answer. I'd like to revert back to using the standard firmware for the device since tomato and DD-WRT are known to have reduced wifi speeds for that particular model. When it comes to the virtualized computers on Proxmox, I haven't found any great tutorials for OVS. The Proxmox server has 1 ethernet port in and I'd like to have a virtual switch that tags VLAN traffic selectively for each VM or LXC. Ideally it would pass the same VLAN tags I created on pfSense. Ultimately, this seems like a pretty straightforward use-case, but I can't find a similar situation online with instructions on set-up. I'm willing to learn about other strategies or recommendations for different hardware. Thanks for any advice [link] [comments] |
Can I create a website that only people connected to my wifi can access ? Posted: 29 Jul 2018 03:05 AM PDT Hi, I have Philips Hue light bulbs at home, and I control everything from my phone, which is super handy. But when I have friends coming over, I don't want to let them have full control of my lights, and since I am a web developer, I was wondering if I could design a simple interface for them so they can interact with the lights in my living room for example, using the Hue API. However, I don't want this interface to be accessible from outside my network... I'm pretty sure I can do that but I am not sure how. Let's say I run a node.js + express server on my main computer, will it be accessible using my local IP address and the port I am listening connections from ? [link] [comments] |
Having two routers act as one network Posted: 29 Jul 2018 08:04 PM PDT It is my understanding that anything connected to a certain router is treated as a new network. So if I have something connected to the modem router combo from the isp and something connected to a router connected to the isp router they will not be able to communicate as they are separate networks. I have a modem from the ISP, a switch connected to that, then a router connected to that on the other side of the room. My computer is connected directly through the switch. My Steam link will be connected to the router on the other side of the room. Would it be possible to make the router act as a switch so it remains the same network? I'm sorry if none of this makes sense, it's late at night and it's a problem I don't know how to properly describe. [link] [comments] |
How to connect an HP 4050N printer wireless to a network. Posted: 29 Jul 2018 07:27 PM PDT My setup:
All the equipment is in the living room near the TV. Now, I have an older HP 4050N printer with I will need to use it every now and the (work, you know), but I don't want to keep it in the living room. I have a small storage area in my apartment, and I was thinking about putting it there. I have a couple of old Linksys WRT54G one running DD-WRT and one running Tomato. Can I wire the HP to a WRT54G and then "bridge" (not sure if it's the correct terminology) the WRT to the ASUS AC 1900 ? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jul 2018 07:01 PM PDT I recently bought a netgear cm700 and a netgear ac1750 router and through wireless I get the full 200 down that I'm supposed to get but through wired on my PC I get 15-20 down. I checked the connection properties and it said it was a 10Mbps connection earlier ( I was getting 5 down) and swapped out that cable with a different one and now I get 15 and the connection says it's a 1Gbps connection. So basically I need help on how to fix this I've already tried searching google for a good while with now positive results besides one time where I fully reset the router and starting to 100 something down but since then it went back the crappy speeds I had before the reset. Update: reset router again and now I can get about 100 down on my pc and 200+ on my phone. So fresh reset completely factory settings and I can still only get 117 down wired, is my router broken or are netgear routers just shit? Also no idea yet if this is relevant to the problem but I should be getting about 20 down and I only get 10 on my phone while I get 17+ on my PC [link] [comments] |
Should I upgrade Internet Speed or Router? Posted: 29 Jul 2018 06:53 PM PDT So, I just moved to my parents house and have to use wifi for my computer as the router is setup in another room and they dont want it moved and since I have been experiencing extremely high pings. At a normal night they have Netflix and both of their phone in use along with my computer and sometimes another computer as well. When I check our speeds I am getting 50/10, is that enough? Or should I upgrade the router? they currently have one provided by the company at 2.4ghz. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jul 2018 06:50 PM PDT As I am a programmer and not a network admin or expert, please excuse any bad terminology I may use in advance, and correct me politely. :) I am a vintage computer enthusiast and hobbyist programmer. Currently I've got hold of a late 90s laptop running DOS and a TI-99/4A home computer. Both of these computers have a standard serial interface available. Neither of these have Ethernet controllers. I have available to me a early- to mid-2000s thin client that I inherited which also has a standard serial interface. I've been researching different protocols I might use for connecting the old devices to my network via serial. So far I've come up with SLIP and PPP. Now, PPP seems like a better protocol overall, but these systems (especially the TI which is only expandable to 32k) simply don't have the available memory to handle it, so I think SLIP is the better choice. My goal: install or create a program for the thin client (which is running TinyCore Linux) to serve as a bridge between these old computers and the network, since the thin client has an Ethernet controller. What I would like from you guys: recommendations for software on the Linux side, since I expect to be doing the other side myself. Is there existing software which at least gets me close here? Essentially I think the Linux side will be acting like a secondary switch, except it will need to translate the serial communications over to Ethernet. I know there's software for PPP, but as mentioned I don't think it's feasible for these old machines to handle it. If there's another protocol you think would do a better job and can fit within 10k or so on the non-Linux side, then I'm open for suggestions. [link] [comments] |
Need help connecting rooms to high speed internet, using MoCa adapters Posted: 29 Jul 2018 06:27 PM PDT Due to how my apartment is built, I struggle to get good WiFi connections on both floors. There as many as 6 different people using the WiFi at any given time, which compounds the issue. The only thing that has really helped is connecting an access point to the router. I don't want extremely long Ethernet cords running all around the apartment. Also important to mention that we do not have cable or tv service, so the coax is not in use. Here's a description of my current setup to give you a better picture of what I'm dealing with. My internet provider is Verizon Fios that provides 300/300 mbs. There's is an Ethernet connection coming from the ONT (outside) that connects to the router, which has a built it coax jack. The living room is the only place in the apartment that has an Ethernet port, but every room has a coax jack. I bought 2 MoCa 2.0 adapters that I was hoping would enable wired internet for all the rooms. One for the router, and one for the room that needs the Ethernet connection. My question is, how do I connect the adapters to the routers so that I can access the internet via the coax jacks in the other rooms? Do I run the Ethernet cord (from the ONT) into the WAN port of the router while connecting a coax cable to the router as well? Do I need an adapter in between the coax jack and the router? Do I need to have both the coax and the Ethernet plugged into the router at the same time? I've spent a lot of time looking into this and have not found a concrete answer. I called Verizon and they said my idea could potentially work. Any advice on how to proceed? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Question about using an ASUS RT-AC86U to load balance two gigabit connections Posted: 29 Jul 2018 06:20 PM PDT I recently bought an ISP plan that gives me two gigabit internet connection for the price of a single gigabit connection plan, and I want to ask: if I want to connect the gigabit connections to an ASUS RT-AC86U and put them into load balancing mode, will my devices theoretically get at least an full 1000Mbps connection? I need to monitor my houses usage, and I REALLY need help PLEASE Posted: 29 Jul 2018 05:51 PM PDT So I'm in a situation where I am just so out of my depth at the moment that it is just driving me crazy that in 2018 monitoring your network seems OVERLY complicated, because i'm 31 and have had my own PC since just before high school and yet there are somethings I just NEVER learned anything about. Network "stuff" is one of those things. I'm not computer illiterate but I have almost 0 experience with anything linux or anything linux-y. So I'll just try and bullet point these things so it's not just multiple paragraphs of a confused person rambling.
The things I have learned from just trying my hardest to look into this stuff is..
I am at a loss, I have googled for reddit posts and it's not a very novice friendly/accessible space. A lot of acronyms and names get thrown around that are just over my head(even after googling some eg SNMP) I saw this thing PRTG get suggested but I just don't get that at all because I just can't see how it could possibly see everything (admittedly I didn't look into how it even gets installed, I got lost when the SNMP thing popped up..) Long story long, I am just hoping someone can reassure me that while a lot of it is gibberish TO ME, It's not actually that difficult. I've made a post before but I just ended up kicking the problem down the road because I was lost still then. I don't know when the best time to post is to get seen so who knows, i might kick this rock down the road again in hopes of finding my savior hahah. So yeah, I hope someone can give me some good leads on where to head next. Thanks to anyone who even took the time to read some of this stuff, i appreciate it, let alone anyone who can help me get a grasp on all this. [link] [comments] |
Question about Cable Networking Posted: 29 Jul 2018 05:15 PM PDT This might be a stupid question, but I've been using DSL for a while now and I'm deciding to switch to Cable internet and I have not worked with anything coax related. I have a long coax cable hardwired in my apartment's living room and I want to know if it will work with internet or it's for a T.V antenna since I have seen many install videos only with a coax wall outlet. Thanks again. [link] [comments] |
Gigabit unmanaged switch problem? Posted: 29 Jul 2018 04:48 PM PDT I recently switched to Google WiFi, and it works great. But each Google WiFi pod has only a single Ethernet port. I wanted to have two ports. So I purchased a Netgear Gigabit unmanaged switch. I connected my NAS (Synology DiskStation) via this switch. I checked the connection was really1,000 Mbps from both a command line tool and the LED blinks of the switch. But file copy between my laptop and NAS is very slow. Please see this picture: https://imgur.com/a/KFVKmyo If I directly connect my NAS to the Google WiFi Pod, I'm seeing a 10-15 MB/s speed for a large file copy. But when I connected via the switch, its speed drops to 1-4 MB/s. What's the problem? Should I buy a "managed" switch? [link] [comments] |

Only 1 Up Channel Bonded & 51-55 Upstream: Bad Wiring or Buy Modem? Posted: 29 Jul 2018 04:00 PM PDT Modem: Netgear C3700-100NAS Connection: No spitters in the house. No TV. Modem combo is connected directly to the coax coming from the wall. Coax from wall is closest to the outside connection. Problem: I'm having some ongoing issues with my modem requiring frequent resets. I believe these problems to be related to my 51-55 dBmv and my only one locked bonded upstream channel (see pic). I believe this is a line problem, and not a modem problem Attempted Solution: Cox tech acknowledged my 51-55 dBmv (pic) . The tech suggested that i buy a new modem because mine was more than 3 years old (pic) (pic). The tech offered to send a rented one to me. However, I discovered he modem came with a $20 self installation fee, so I refused this option. If the modem was the problem, i would rather use that $20 to buy a Netgear CM600 or an Arris sb6183 and mate it to an Archer C or A7. Question: Does the tech's suggestion to buy a modem sound right to you? [link] [comments] |
Issues using dual service with load balance router Posted: 29 Jul 2018 03:46 PM PDT I only get 30mb from my DSL provider here and my apartment also offers cable internet for 25mb, and im trying to use them both so I can get faster speeds and stream 4k and directvnow without pixelation issues. When I first set this up I had both modems feeding to my LB router tl-r470t+ and when doing speed tests I could get around 50-55mb via my AirPort Extreme over wifi, but after a couple of hours it would start to dip and at points directvnow couldn't stop buffering and my speeds were only around 15-20mb. At that point I factory reseted everything (both modems, the LB router and my airport extremes) and the past two days its seemed relatively solid but now its starting to dip again, and im not sure what the issue is. Does anyone have recomendations as to what u should do? I can probably post my log/settings if someone can tell me how to do that lol [link] [comments] |
Routing all NAS traffic through VPN Posted: 29 Jul 2018 08:06 AM PDT So I'm planning on buying this NAS: ZyXEL NAS326. It has builtin torrenting software and other stuff, which I'm planning to do. So I'm wondering is there any way to route all of the outside traffic through a VPN? I already have a subscription for NordVPN. [link] [comments] |
Inexpensive wireless gateways, any recommended? Posted: 29 Jul 2018 08:51 AM PDT SOLVED: Someone PM'd a discount link for a device available for local pickup. Thank you, stranger! Hey /r/homenetworking, we have some disabled family entering a difficult living situation (temporary, but it's a process), and they wouldn't be able to configure or assemble something like a SB6183 + ER X + UAP if I shipped it. They're about to be in a sub-800 sq ft. apartment with a 10Mbps cable plan, have one laptop and one smartphone, and a budget of under $100. I'm not up on consumer hardware offerings and was hoping for some recommendations for a simple and reliable cable modem + AP. I know that's historically "cheap, fast, reliable: pick 1" territory, but please indulge me. At a cursory google, the TP-Link Archer CR500 looks promising (3.0, 16x4, non-Puma, $99), but I'd like to explore cheaper options with decent reliability since it might get left behind or not be used after 6mo-1yr. Refurb is also okay. If it's not against the rules, PMing affiliate links for your in-thread recommendation is also fine with me. Thanks. I'm pretty worn out right now and might not be thinking clearly, so if you have other obvious ideas or suggestions, I'd appreciate the advice. [link] [comments] |
Help a rookie out...home wifi/ethernet question Posted: 29 Jul 2018 02:35 PM PDT Hi All, Please see below for reference... https://imgur.com/a/YTGMsMd I have a PC and an Xbox in my bedroom that I am trying to use Ethernet to, but the only ethernet ports in the house are the ones in the living room with the main modem/router. I have a TP linker extender that has an ethernet port, so I thought I could set that up as a switch then run ethernet cable from the switch to a router in my bedroom...then run ethernet from the LAN ports to the xbox/PC but I am having no luck. so... 1. what is the best way to get ethernet setup in a bedroom without ethernet ports? 2. can i fix my current situation, or do i need new hardware? Posted: 29 Jul 2018 02:25 PM PDT I have network dedicated for just cameras. They all connect using CAT5 to a switch, and then a have a Cradlepoint MBR95 Router with a sim card. The way it works is that it streams the cam feed using cellular towers to anyone wanting to stream it using their mobile phones. The cams are set up in a remote location with no land lines or even power. We use solar panels and battery bank for power backup. Now recently we have security staying nearby. We manage to get a CAT5 from the camera's switch to the security guy's trailer. Connecting it straight to a computer we are able to get into the cam's network and set up the software to view the cameras. However this ins't very ideal for several reasons. How do we go about connecting said CAT5 to a wireless router instead but without using its WAN port, which we would like to use to hook up a modem in the near furure. And having the computer(s) connect to its WiFi in order to view the feed. We want to leave the rest of the system intact, with the Sim Card router still doing its thing. Is that possible? Google Wifi Mesh Network or Ubiquiti Setup Advice Posted: 29 Jul 2018 10:00 AM PDT I recently moved into a new apartment and setup my 3 puck google wifi setup with at&t fibre as my internet connection. However I don't seem to be getting as good as performance as I used to. I have a NAS that I use to stream to an Nvidia Shield and Firetv box using kodi, but I get occasional buffering. This is how I currently have my 3 pucks setup. https://imgur.com/WWJbT7b In the office where my main puck is I have a desktop and NAS connected to the ATT modem (built in router is disabled) with an un-managed tp-link switch. In the living room I have a Shield, PS4, Raspberry Pi for emulation + adblocking, and a 4k bluray player with ethernet only (I only need internet on that for firmware updates so if its not online thats fine). In the bedroom I have a FireTV box. Here is my dilemma. The nvidia shield does not stay on the 5ghz network; for some reason Google Wifi keeps switching it to the 2.4 network and when its on the 2.4ghz network it constantly buffers/completely unusable for local streaming and so I currently have it hardwired to the single ethernet port that the puck has there. At first I was considering buying a second unmanaged switch just so I could hardwire everything in the entertainment center but I was also thinking of getting rid of the mesh network alltogether and going with a Ubiquiti setup with a Edgerouter and either a nanoHD AP or an AC-Pro. This would allow me to force the shield to be on the 5ghz and generally just give me more control over my network as the Google Mesh system has almost no advanced features. I'm more concerned about performance than overall cost but I also would like to keep cost under $250-300 so would the Ubiquiti setup theoretically give me a noticeable increase in performance. Need help picking a 5-port switch for a UniFi USG + UAP AC PRO setup Posted: 29 Jul 2018 01:37 PM PDT I currently have an Netgear R7000, which has been acting up lately. It's wifi reaches all of my second and third floor 1750sqft condo with the 5ghz signal, and even the garage in the basement with the 2.4ghz signal. So I think one similarly-placed UniFi AP AC Pro should do the trick, right? Anyway, I am trying to pick a switch to put between the USG and the UAP AC Pro. I only need 4 ports in the network closet. I don't need anything fancy, nothing managed. I want to make sure whatever switch I get isn't going to be any kind of bottleneck. I am between these two options:
Are either of these good? Bad? Doesn't matter? Should I avoid trying to get a PoE switch altogether and just use the included PoE injector instead? [link] [comments] |
New Home Build with Cat6 - Wired Router Help Posted: 29 Jul 2018 01:35 PM PDT Hi Everyone, I'm a new home owner, and about to move into a new build house that has Cat 6 running through the house with ethernet ports built into 4 different rooms (Office, Kitchen, Bedroom, and Game Room). All of this feeds back to a closet downstairs. I already own an Arris SB6141 modem, and an Asus AC3100 wireless router. I do not want to put the Asus wireless router in the closet as it would not have good signal exposure (I would prefer to connect it straight from ethernet jack in Game Room). So I need a small wired router that sits in this closet and takes feed from modem, and then connects to the ethernet ports in the whole house. What features should I be looking for here? I'm assuming I would just want basic firewall etc, but would love some guidance here as I'm a new home owner. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Jul 2018 05:44 AM PDT Hi! I'm going to be running Ethernet in my house soon. It will be run through the attic and into a few walls. Any recommends on a cat6 cable brand? I'm going to purchase a 1,000 ft spool. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
