a browser named QQ from china got automatically installed in my windows 10 laptop.. .... no prompt/ no log in event manager nothing .... what might be issue ?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 03:30 AM PDT

currently i am in china using lenovo laptop which i bought from china , i downloaded clean version of windows 10 and reinstalled just to make sure there is no malware which lenovo is infamous for .

everything was going on ok (beside hardware failure related with kernel power ) ... all of sudden a browser named QQ (which is quite popular browser in china ) appeared in my taskbar... no prompt to install nothing , just appeared from no where ... all i did was download intel graphic driver installation which i download from lenovo driver website ....

did they bundled qq with that intel ... why there was no prompt , shouldn't there be log in event manager ... which surprisingly doesn't show anything abnormal ...

what are my options ? thank you.

Windows 10 Education Privacy Settings: "*Some settings are hidden or managed by your Organization". Does my university have access/the capability to push settings to my Win10 installation without my consent?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 01:16 PM PDT

I just installed a free windows 10 education installation I got through my university. I was under the impression that the education edition was one of the preferred versions because it had more granular grouppolicy and privacy settings compared to other versions.

However, when I went to go change all my privacy settings, at the top of the page it says in red: "*Some settings are hidden or managed by your Organization".

What settings exactly are "managed by [my] organization"? Does my institution have any kind of access to my computer? If I am interpreting that statement correctly, then that implies that the institution that provided your license has some kind of backdoor access to your personal computer settings.

How to reset PC firmware to normal?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 05:46 PM PDT

I was installing Fedora (a Linux distro) on my PC and I had to force shutdown in the middle of the installation process. After that my computer (XPS 13) refused to boot properly until

    1) a factory image of Windows was installed on my computer by the Dell Support Assist Program

    and

    2) I disabled Secure Boot and let rEFInd, which I had previously installed, boot into Windows for me.

Because of this - I'm guessing rEFInd is still installed on my computer. I'd like to, if possible, reset my computer's firmware to its original state - without rEFind or any modifications - so that I can re-enable Secure Boot and sleep in peace.

How can I go about resetting my firmware to its original state?

How long should it take to scan and repair a 64gb microsd card?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 07:13 PM PDT

There are errors on the card. Usually from the tablet immediately shutting down while still writing to the card.

A format won't happen, and after about 10 minutes, there still is 0% of the progress bar completed.

Windows 10 machine- DVDs no longer recognized, (CDs recognized, neither internal nor new external DVD drives recognize DVDs)

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 12:44 PM PDT

So, the computer is one of the CyberpowerPC gaming rigs, about a year old.

I do a fair amount of DVD burning on it; but in the last few weeks, its stopped even recognizing DVDs. It will recognize CDs and CD-Rs, and has no problem burning CD-Rs.

So, I thought maybe the drive was going- so I got a little external (USB-port) DVD-R burner from Amazon; it won't recognize DVDs in that either...

Any ideas what to do? So far, I've:

    Restarted the computer (duh)

Uninstalled the (internal) DVD burner drive and restarted, letting it automatically detect and reinstall

Uninstalled the Power2Go CD/DVD software, (since it had an ISO component and burner, thought maybe some interference)

Confirmed all drivers up to date

    Confirmed Windows up to date

Run the physical DVD lens cleaner (a few times)

Tried a different brand of DVD-Rs

Checked it if would recognize DVD movie (official, not DVD-R)

    Tried a DL-DVD-R

Ran Malwarebytes to look for malicious programs- nada.

So far, all its got me is an external DVD burner that won't work. <_<

    Stats:

Windows 10 64-bit (Home) (factory installed) HR-DT-ST DVD RAM GH24NSC0 is the install DVD drive

OH- and as a sidebar, the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter experiences an unexpected error and cannot continue- so can't even try to address the problem that way <_< (Is there a fix for that, as the trouble shooter malfunctioning seems like a soap stain- where do you go from there?)

Any help to fix this problem would be appreciated. I mean, it seems there is a software issue with discs "bigger" than CDs, so even getting a new internal drive would be a non-starter.

Please and thank you for the help.

How do I disable left click repeat rate?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 12:16 PM PDT

    Hello.

In shooters/FPS games I like using full auto only weapons in a semi automatic mode sometimes.

How do I make my left click (when held down) not repeat it's input?

    Cheers,

Windows 10: How to permanently remove capacity for computer to automatically download updates?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 07:23 PM PDT

My computer just interrupted my work several times and forced me to restart, making me lose hours of work. I've already gone through steps to disable this stuff, but it seems like that's not enough, or it undid itself. How do I prevent this from ever happening atain?

I trust nothing about my computer that affects my system without my permission, least of all updates, which always hold the potential to brick the machine. After years of people complaining about this, how is there not an option to disable this inane feature?

Can't find my Intel Graphics model name

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 05:34 AM PDT

I'm trying to compare my laptop's specs to the minimum requirements of "Rules of Survival" but I don't know what model of video card I have. I went into the DirectX Diagnostic tool but it only shows it as "Intel (R) HD Graphics". Meanwhile, In the Intel Graphics' Control Panel, It says it's an "Intel (R) HD Graphics (Core i3). Idk where to base it on. Am I supposed to look for a model number or is that the actual name? I'm trying to see if it's better than "Intel HD Graphics 4600"

How do I search for .rar archives inside the Windows folder?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 05:40 PM PDT

In 2014 I hid a .rar ( or .zip ) file inside some folders in the Windows folder ( the C:\Windows ), with a specific name ( War_Of_The_Underwolrd, or something like that ), and I found out testing that searching normally only brings me the .rar files outside the Windows folder ( I created a .rar file and putted it into the "Boot" folder, and it only finds it if I'm on the "Boot" folder ). I'm actually pretty desperate to find it, 'cause it contains personal info. The notebook that contains the .rar file that I want have Windows 7. Is there a way to find it?

How do I set specific apps for a user?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 10:49 AM PDT

Hi I have a user for gaming and a user for programs. I have a program on both that limits the amount of time you can use the account per day before logging out.

How can I make sure that the games installed in the first account can't be used on the second? I want to limit it to creative apps etc.

Every 30ish minutes my mouse doesn't let me click on things in some programs. Opening task manager fixes

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 02:18 AM PDT

I just built a new PC, installed Windows 10, and I have all the available updates.

About every 20-30 minutes or so (sometimes longer) I get an issue that causes issues on some of my input devices.

    • My mouse can't click on anything. None of the mouse buttons produce any affect, and the wheel doesnt work either, however the mouse cursor moves.

    • My my PS4 controller, plugged in through USB, will start behaving as if the buttons have 2 functions. It seems like the A button will behave as if it is also performing some kind of keyboard command, i'm not sure which one though (I can tell it is doing this because in a game I play, if you press any keyboard command while using a Gamepad, the UI will toggle to show keyboard commands instead of gamepad buttons)

Any time this happens, opening the Task Manager window will instantly fix the problem

Bitlockered non-system disks - can they be accessed with a system reinstall?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 04:21 AM PDT

I have ordered a TPM for my motherboard and I am considering encrypting all the drives in my desktop PC with Bitlocker. I currently have a system drive and a few data drives.
If my desktop PC was stolen and someone did a fresh Windows install on a new or existing system drive, would the TPM then mean that they have access to the data on my encrypted data drives? It seems crazy that they would but I'm kinda looking for confirmation that they'd still be protected before I start encrypting everything.

[question] what is the best free antivirus software currently available.

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 01:49 AM PDT

Before you say windows defender understand my predicament. I am running a version of windows 7 i thought was genuine and had been working as such until a few months ago. an update has given me a black desktop and a message in the bottom corner saying this copy of windows isn't genuine... i am also unable to get updates or use defender : ( i contacted Microsoft, it turns out that when i bought my custom pc years ago i was sold a counterfeit copy of windows. I have no contact info for the seller as it has been so long and it was working fine i assumed i wouldnt need it. Make sure you check these things out when u are making a purchase people! Anyway, sometime next week i will be purchasing a genuine copy of windows and doing a fresh install but until then i would like a free antivirus program that doesn't act like a virus itself... popups, unnecessary clutter ect... do they even exist anymore??

Apache Server Web directories access restrictions

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 01:17 AM PDT

    Hello everyone.

I have set up an apache server, hosting a website.

For example In my website you can play with an online javascript atari roms. Whenever you load a rom in the website, the javascript temporarily downloads it to your browsers cache.

If you for example write website.com/roms/atari.zip you can download this rom. I do not want this.

Is there a way to forbid direct access to this file but also whitelisting access from within the javascript requests?

    Many thank you in advance.

How to change my windows 10 edition?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 01:54 AM PDT

Hi guys, so I used to have a PC with Windows 10 on it, and had the license attached to my Microsoft account. I hard resetted it and sold it, and recently built a brand new PC. I installed Windows 10 on this current PC and am trying to activate the Digital License key onto this PC, but it won't allow me to since I just found out my previous Windows 10 was actually Windows 10 Pro and I installed Windows 10 Home instead. Is there a way change what edition I'm currently on, or would I have to completely uninstall Windows on this PC and just reinstall it again through my boot drive? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Need help with two volume-related issues please (Windows 10)

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 10:59 PM PDT

    1) The on screen display for the volume meter used to work fine for me (display/volume meter popped on the top left of my screen showed up when I was gaming full-screen). Now the display/volume meter doesn't appear when I'm active in the full-screen game, but it'll show up when I'm not active in the full-screen game. How do I get this display to return whenever I adjust the volume (regardless of the active/full screen window)?

    2) When I plug my headphones into the headphone jack, the computer detects that a device was plugged in and I select "OK" on headphones but the volume continues to play through the speakers, and "headphones" do not show up in the Playback Devices window:

    https://imgur.com/2oydWVE

If I unplug the headphones and plug them back in, but this time instead of selecting "OK" I click on this icon:

    https://imgur.com/HNrHclU

Then the volume will switch to the headphones, but the headphones will still not show up (despite receiving volume through the headphone device):

    https://imgur.com/2kGd5sI

The troubleshooting I've done so far:

I've opened the Device Manager and selected "update driver" for the audio driver (by doing the automatic search and it says the best drivers are already installed. https://imgur.com/FQdXrW6

I've also uninstalled/deleted the audio driver and restarted the PC (and also shut down the PC completely and then booted up). Same issue persists. Anything else I can do?
