Looking for a firewall like tinywall on Windows or little snitch on MacOS Posted: 29 Jun 2018 09:04 AM PDT I can't find any that are anywhere as powerful and easy to use as the two I mentioned, any decent or good looking ones I did find are rarely updated and seem sort of abandoned. Any help finding one is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Memory resource differences among Linux DE for laptops/desktops with high-end CPU/GPU Posted: 29 Jun 2018 12:42 PM PDT We as Linux users are definitely blessed with the fact that Linux can be run on any old laptops/desktops with even the most outdated processors providing that you are using the right desktop environment (DE). Even my Asus laptop with dual-core Intel Celeron processor can take on MATE and Xfce quite well. But I've been wondering: Are there any noticeable difference whatsoever, significant or not, when using different Linux DE from a laptop/desktop equipped with high-end processors? With vast choices of DE to choose for, right from the simplest LXDE to the most modern of GNOME 3, there must be surely at least some differences do they? 🤔 [link] [comments] |

How do I easily open or convert OneNote Notebooks on Ubuntu offline? Posted: 29 Jun 2018 12:22 PM PDT I am shifting from Windows 10 to a Win 10 and Ubuntu dual boot. I have some large OneNote Notebooks and I need to open them on Ubuntu and keep on editing them. I cannot send any files online since that would be unsecure. Is there any easy way to start up the OneNote Notebooks on Ubuntu? I am trying Ubuntu for the first time so I really need an easy way. [link] [comments] |
List of live boot distros with wpa_supplicant already included? Posted: 29 Jun 2018 05:17 AM PDT Hi, I want to try out some linux distros on my old HP Pavilion G6 and I am looking for list of live boot distros with wpa_supplicant already included. The reason being that I already have been using Raspbian on my RPi and the wpa_supplicant was the only way I was able to connect to the university's WPA2 wifi connection. EDIT: Thanks to Karmalien's advice I found This that lists out all of the packages in the distro and can compare with other distros. [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu vs Fedora vs openSUSE vs Linux Mint vs Manjaro Posted: 29 Jun 2018 11:04 AM PDT Eventhough I've been dual booting Windows 10 and Linux for more than a year now, I'm still new with the latter. That is why I've only been using Ubuntu to this day. However, I did check out on other Linux distros and I noticed that most Linux users who didn't use Ubuntu always go for either Fedora/openSUSE/Mint/Manjaro. This got me thinking: What are the differences between all of the listed distro here? Which one would you recommend the most? [link] [comments] |
USB Boot on Dell Latitude 7490 Posted: 28 Jun 2018 11:02 PM PDT So, I got a laptop from my company for work purposes. And I would like to keep it that way, and not use the Windows for personal purposes. But in some cases (emergencies) I don't have my personal laptop on hand. At which time I'd like to use a bootable flash drive. I've had no problems with this before. But I cannot see the drive in boot options at all. Secure boot is turned on. Would that be the cause. In case I turn off secure boot temporarily for the USB boot purpose and then revert back to on, would it cause any harm to the data and OS integrity. Are there any other creative alternatives. Posted: 29 Jun 2018 05:16 AM PDT Background: I am running Raspbian Stretch on my Pi3 [pure command line, no gui, I am trying to teach myself linux cli]. I would like to receive messages when cronjobs are run, errors, or any number of defined instances. I understand postfix is the solution but I have no earthly idea how to configure postfix so as to receive these messages and then to actually read them. So, ETMLI, please and thank you? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 05:10 PM PDT I posted this on r/linuxquestions but got no answer. Maybe I'm more lucky here? Long version:I have one computer I'm using as file server and also internet server for other computers using Lubuntu 16.04. I have a machine I dual boot with windows 7 eventually to render in 3ds Max and unfortunately I'll have to "upgrade" it to windows 10 for various reasons. I absolutely don't trust it and want to block all outside connections to it but allow full LAN network. How do I do it? I also have other Linux machines I want to keep having full network and internet access. I found some links but they are way too complex for me. I'm basically just using right click on network settings and set it to "share to other computers". So, while my NFS, samba, Syncthing and SSH are working perfectly, this is the limit of my knowledge. So any help is appreciated. Some suggestions I found online say to disable the gateway on windows. I would really like to find a solution on the server side, not anything that requires trust on windows. 2 options I can think would be to use the router and block it through the router, but it's physically very difficult at the moment. The other is maybe finding a way to block everything but samba, but that could affect Syncthing, a Vray network key, or other services I could use... So I don't know.. TLDR I shared a Lubuntu 16.04 connection to computers using the "share to other computers" option and want to block only internet access to it (from the server). How do I do it? Thanks for any help.
