    Cheaper alternative for XPS 13?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 08:11 AM PDT

I'm looking for a cheaper alternative for XPS 13(Maybe $100 to $300 cheaper). I'll mostly be using it for college and coding. I'm basically looking for: 1. 13.3-14Inch no bezel screen with good quality display 2. 8 to 16 gb ram 3. Latest I5 or I7 intel core 4.SSD 5. Hopefully a well-established or well known reliable brand. 6. Good aesthetic.

Any suggestions? Would really appreciate it.

Does "WideView color-rich display" mean IPS?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 06:34 AM PDT

A laptop I'm looking at doesn't say whether it's 15.6 inch display is TN or IPS, all it says about the display is: "15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) WideView color-rich display".

Should I assume it's TN since it doesn't say otherwise?

XPS 15 2018 Edition is non responsive. I was playing a game on steam and then the screen froze; does nothing for Ctrl+Alt+Delete or F4+Tab or windows key or power key. Cannot turn off or do anything.

I would like to buy a laptop for under £500 with a gpu better than intel HD 620

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 01:26 PM PDT

more specifically I would like to buy a laptop with 128GB/256GB SSD, 8GB RAM and a GPU better than intel 620. I have a budget of 500 British pounds. I the main usage for the laptop will be general work at university and gaming. I understand that the specifications I have given swell as the price do not constitute to a gaming laptop but I would really like to make do with the specifications and price range I have given. I am open to suggestions

Asus ROG Zephyrus GM501 for School ?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 01:09 PM PDT

Hi, I'm from Europe and I'll send one entire in the US to go to school, I won't have my desktop and I need a laptop that I'll have to bring to school and use at home to play some games. I'm not the type of guy that plays light games like LOL, or CS but mainly more hardcore games like Star Citizen or other AAA games. I had a look at the new Asus zephyrus gm501 that is 1500 euros in my country. My question is: is it okay to bring a gaming pc at school ? Will people make fun of me ? Or does the weight 2.5 kg (5,51156 pounds) will be painful for me during class ?

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834234944 (the price isn't the same for me it's 1500 euros)

    Thanks in advance :)

Should i wait for the next generation of nvidia GPUs?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 01:04 PM PDT

    Hi guys

I'm in the market for a new gaming laptop - currently deciding between a GS65 and Aero.

While doing my research about these laptops, I realised that the current generation of Nvidia GPUs have been out for a while now. That's not to say that they are showing their age, but they have been around for a bit now so I decided to read about the next generation of GPUs.

There is already early news and rumours about the new GPUs so I'm wondering if it is worth waiting or not?

I'm fairly new to the gaming world. How big is the jump between one generation and the next? And how long does it take between early news like this and an actual product being released?

I really don't want to spend this kind of money on something, if a newer version is coming out soon.

    Thanks for your help.

General impressions on the Matebook D?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 06:52 AM PDT

I am in the market for a new laptop and the build quality and sheer power of the matebook d in my price range is pretty good. However, I am having trouble finding much in the way of reviews online for it. The sepcific unit I am looking at is walmart's signature edition. What is everyone's impressions on it? Battery life? Does it get hot? I heard the ram is soldered on, is that true? etc...

Is this a good deal for 14" lenovo? model confusion

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 12:26 PM PDT

    Hi Reddit.

Can someone explain this model number difference for a Lenovo 720s? How's the $999 deal?

    Same exact specs.

    81BD000SUS vs 81BD001PUS

81BD000SUS is on sale for $999 at Microcenter. http://www.microcenter.com/product/487723/IdeaPad_720S_14%22_Laptop_Computer_-_Silver;_Intel_Core_i7-8550U_Processor;_NVIDIA_GeForce_MX150;_16GB_DDR4;_512GB_Solid_State_Drive;_Microsoft_Windows_

Hp 2 in 1 laptop problem?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 12:00 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

Hope you are all well. I currently have an HP Spectre x2 2 in 1 laptop which for some reason after the most recent BIOS update, keeps having screen problems. Whenever I scroll in tablet mode, there is a black bar that appears which shifts the whole page to the side for a moment while flickering. I've tried updating my display drivers, tried rolling back on the bios and the problem still persists.

Exact model I'm referring too: https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-spectre-x2---12-c052nr

This is the second time this has happened and HP has already replaced my laptop once. They had no idea what I was talking about and after replacing the motherboard twice and after updating again, the problem always comes back the day after. I know they are the correct drivers because I use the HP support program that does the updates for me.

The issue is exactly like this users problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKaZ0XNE4PM

Does anyone know how to fix the problem? Or am I going to have to make 20 calls to HP again to get another laptop and basically never update the drivers and bios on it again?

    some keys do not work

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 11:49 AM PDT

Good afternoon Reddit, as the title says some keys of my laptop do not work (several) and I do not know what the damage could be? the laptop is an Asus x555la. before they started to fail accidentally I put the 3.5mm headphones in a usb port and the PC went out.

I plugged in my Lenovo Y50, and immediately after a hard reset sound it died.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 11:06 AM PDT

I have tried taking off all the power supply it had and holding down the power button but still no luck. No lights showing up, no sounds coming from fans or laptop whatsoever.

Also, AC makes weird ticking / clicking noise, when connected to laptop. When it's not connected, it's silent. I have tried another AC but no response. I have given it to tech service last week.

What might be the problem? Could it be a motherboard issue? Overvoltage? Is it fixable without a motherboard replacement?

Asus VivoBook S vs. Acer Aspire E15 vs. New Dell Inspiron 14 7000 Series

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 11:03 AM PDT

I've looked at a bunch of laptops over the last week or so and I finally think I've narrowed my search down to 3. My most important criteria was having it be between $600-$800 but still have 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD.

My main questions about these laptops would be display quality (they're all 1920x1080), but I've heard different manufacturers have different display qualities, i.e. Asus sometimes uses TN. My other most important thing is battery life. I want to be able to use it for at least 7-8 hours without having to charge (this will be used for work which is just spreadsheets and internet browsing, no gaming).

All of these laptops have 4/5 stars, but some of the bad reviews are concerning so I'm wondering if they're just noise from the loud minority or if they're actual typical problems for these brands.

Side note: I couldn't find a lot of reviews on the Dell besides their website. It seems like this one is the "newer" model which doesn't have a lot of info on it yet.

Format 5 year old Dell or buy a new laptop?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 10:38 AM PDT

I have a Dell Latitude I bought over 5 years ago, and been experiencing slowness since a few months, and rare freezing. Should I just format it to expand its life span or buy a new one? I am thinking of an LG Gram but it is expensive where I live. I am not too much of a tech savvy, I have friends telling me that the laptop can just be formated to fix it, others telling me a laptop's life span is of 5 years only, and that I should change.

Is Lenovo Yoga 910 (4K 2-in-1 with integrated graphics) still worth to purchase in 2018?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 10:22 AM PDT

Hello /r/laptops. I found a deal on a Yoga 910 with 16GB RAM, 4K Display 10 Point Touch, and a 512GB SSD south of ~$650. However, it's an i7-7500U with no dedicated graphics. I'm not planning to do much gaming on it as I have a desktop for that purpose, and planning to use this more for VSCode, Unity, that sort of applications.

I was originally eyeing the Acer Nitro V or Aspire E 15, but this is almost half the weight and has a better screen, with the tradeoff of not having a dedicated GTX 1050 Ti.

It's ~$650 with the laptop and the charger, slightly used but shouldn't be too scuffed up. Is it still worth it to purchase currently?

    HP OMEN 15-dc0051nr heating?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 09:13 AM PDT

Ive had an HP OMEN 15-dc0051nr for a few days now and, while the games are great on a 1060, the CPU gets insanley hot, and has gotten way too close to the tjmaxx for comfort (near 95-96 degrees C in CSGO). The GPU, though, has never gone above 87-88. I've already got XTU and undervolted the cpu to -0.04, what else should I do? Reference Specs =

How long will a gtx1060 last?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 08:33 AM PDT

I have the option to get a gtx1060 or a 1070 in my laptop(MSI GS65), but the 1060 version is ~250 less expensive. I was wondering how long will the 1060 last, meaning how long will I be able game on medium to high settings. Also is $250 worth the upgrade ?

Workstation like the Thinkpad P51/52 but without the "quadro tax"?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 08:24 AM PDT

Is there a laptop that has the power, build quality, size/weight, and upgrade-ability** of the Thinkpad P51/52 workstations but with a consumer-grade gpu instead of a quadro? I don't particularly need the extras that a quadro offers over a gtx, so I'd rather not pay the extra hundreds of dollars that a quadro demands if I can avoid it.

    .

*Ideally an 8th gen H chip (e.g., 8750H) but similar is fine, dedicated gpu (I don't really care about gaming, but it helps with renders), non-mediocre screen, decent battery life

**~15" screen, ~4.5-5.5 lb (i.e., doesn't sacrifice thermals for a few more mm thinner or 0.5 lb lighter)

***Space for multiple SSDs, accessible extra RAM slots, etc

    .

Anyone have experience with Dell's refurbished laptops?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 07:15 AM PDT

    Hey folks,

I am in the market for a new/used school (EE) /work laptop (mostly Autocad LT)/ occassional CSGO(maybe other titles) I am pretty set on a Dell XPS 15 but looking at the referbs having trouble justifying $1500 for non 4k or 1800 for the 4k. I wanted to see if anyone had good or bad feedback regarding the referbs or if anyone has other suggestions for light 15 inch laptops under 1,500 (16 GB ram, m.2, gtx1050+)

    cheers

How does the Asus zenbook UX331UN handle gaming (heat wise)?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 09:42 PM PDT

I played LoL on my macbook air and after 13 months it died because its motherboard components melted but besides heating up a lot I found that my gaming experience was quite ok. Mind you i also used a fan control app to try avoiding my laptop from overheating... i know the macbook air is not made for gaming

As long as the graphics are ok and the game isnt laggy, i dont mind!

TLDR- will the ux331un handle LoL and not die on me??
